A word from Kohan Japanese Restaurant
Kohan on Maxwell is more than a sushi restaurant-it's an integral part of the neighborhood. "Our patrons treat us like we are part of their family," General Manager Steve Ko explains. "We try to do the same for them. Finer food with a friendly approach is our restaurant's main goal." Furthermore, though the sushi could be considered among the best in Chicago, the menu offers a creative and diverse selection for everyone. There is a variety of fresh sashimi and nigiri plates for the sushi fanatics, while the new Asian tapas plates offer a plethora of flavors to those not quite ready to take on raw sushi. The bite sized portions offer a variety of choices for every taste. There are always daily drink specials and Kohan is available for catering or on-site parties. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a five star quality meal and service at a reasonable price.

Great sushi. This restaurant is tucked away on a cobbled street. Parking is only two dollars in the evening. Excellent.

My boyfriend and I found this place off of Open Table. I was nervous that it was going to be a place full of college kids with mediocre sushi. I am happy to report that my original feelings were incredibly wrong. The staff was so friendly and explained the menu for us. We ordered the shrimp dumplings- SO GOOD-, the W3, and another roll that I can't remember the name of. Our order also came with miso soup which was a nice touch. The food was incredible! My boyfriend also enjoyed trying different Japanese beers, which he thought was a cool experience. I will definitely be going back. Their lunch specials look like an amazing deal, so hopefully I can try one of those soon!

Four of us went to Kohan for my husband's birthday. A few of us wanted sushi and the kids wanted steak habachi. Mr. Kim was very entertaining at the habachi grill, and the filet was great. We also had the W3! roll - it was literally on fire! and helped the lemon infuse its taste into the roll! The Bibimbap with kimchee and beef was tasty too. We will be back, as the service was friendly, and the food preparation was very nice and tasty.

We chose this restaurant by viewing neighborhoods close to United Center on Open Table. The food was excellent and all of the staff we interacted with were friendly and attentive. The street it is located on is very quaint. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. Great find!

Decent but not great. While the free Korean appetizers were generous, the three different items tasted too similar. A prominent spot on the inside of the menu lists substitutions and their costs, including -$2 if you leave avocado off your sushi roll. I ordered two rolls without avocado, a total of $22, but was informed that this discount only applied to those rolls on that page (not stated, and it's two facing pages of rolls.) I was a bit irked by that. Music was schizophrenic, chairs were a "hip" leather design with torn seat slats. My Faye's kimchi stew was not very authentic in ingredients.

I had sushi the time I went, which was great. What interests me about Kohan even more is that I discovered that Kohan offers a wide selection of Korean food. Korean food is a bit of a rarity in Chicago - at least near downtown - but it is great and Kohan's offerings looked enticing. They even have in-table grills! I'm excited to go back.

The management at the restaurant was so nice and interactive with us. We were able to make a 11:30 pm reservation. The food and service was amazing! This is my new sushi spot.

We feel like we want to give the restaurant another chance. Food and Service were good, but, there was a private party doing Karaoke and it was tough to have a conversation because it was so loud. Being a Chicago lifer, it was very nice to see how the maxwell street neighborhood has completely transformed. Was good enough to deserve another chance and we certainly will be coming back to a new found neighborhood with a college like vibe.

Food was very disappointing. Went there because it claimed to have Japanese teppan cooking, but they did not cook the food at the table. The tempura was tasteless. Not many customers there, so don't think it is very popular....
