Diner Reviews
  • "Great last minute find. Went on a late Sunday night and only one other group was there but that didn't bother me. Served by Maurizio who was one of the best servers I've ever had. Went for my birthday and was given a free round of drinks. Recommend, maybe on a Friday or Saturday night if you're looking for a crowd."

  • "Not only was the food over priced, both dishes I ordered were over seasoned and the portions were extremely small. I was extremely disappointed, I will never eat at Koco Modern Caribbean again."

  • "I was glad to be there on a friday night, is the best day to be there since there's a professional magiccian performing table by table. And the food is great not too spicy either as i thought it will be, the drinks are good too, and the deserts deserve a medal. For a friday night special ocation, this is the place to be. I'm looking forward to go back on my next vacation and hope the magic will still be there! Btw his name is Manuel Velasco I was shocked since he performed all those tricks in front of you..."

  • "Our first night in Puerto Rico staying at El San Juan hotel. Koco Restaurant is housed inside this hotel. It was absolutely delicious! Service and ambiance was outstanding. Would highly recommend!"

  • "Service was superb, from the hostess, the server, the manager and the bartender. Had a band that played at perfec tempo and volume. A magician walking around approached the table only between courses and stayed for only the right amount of time. Servers suggestions were right on line."

  • "Really good food - on the list every time we visit Puerto Rico."

  • "We're regular visitors to the Island and to the El San Juan Hotel, knew of Koco but had adopted a manana attitude toward trying it out. I'm sorry we waited so long. Billed as "Porto" Rican with a kick, it lives up to it's billing. Our server was happy to not only make recommendations, but described each of the dishes he recommended and why he liked them. We had the scallops appetizer, the mero and the chicken. All were presented well, tasted great and were nice size portions. Not like the almost tapas size kind where the chef seems to think they're preparing a work of art rather than a main course and not so huge that you couldn't finish. We look forward to making this one of our regular stops in the future."

  • "Our overall experience at Koco was pleasant as my Husband and I dined with out 5 year old son. The food is flavorful but the portions are too small (especially for the prices). We are from NY and we are no strangers to paying good to get that in return but our portions were too small here. We shared the beef dumplings as an appetizer, had the jerk grilled chicken and the churrasco for entrees and the chocolate brownie dessert. Although they don't have a kids menu they were great about making our son panko breaded chicken fingers and fries which we though was nice. All around service, ambience and food was good."

  • "Totally enjoyed our meal at Koco. Our waiter, Alberto, couldn't have been more helpful, making suggestions and describing every dish. The tuna tartare appetizer was spectacular. Our entrees arrived in a timely fashion and were delicious. My husband said the paella was the best he had ever had, and he has a deccriminating palate. I ordered the grouper entree that was served with a mofungo. I found it a little sweet. It was very good, the fish prepared perfectly. We did not order dessert but the meal was terrific."

  • "This was a last minute choice for dining in the Isla Verde neighborhood. It is in the Old San Juan hotel which is a great place for nightlife and music. We lived our experience the paella was "to die for"! Our server, Alberto was the best. Great Mojitos too."

  • "Great ambience, excellent service... The food was good...for starters I'll recommend the Coq Au Vin Dumplings Also try the Mojitos!!!"

  • "Kocos, located in El San Juan Hotel, is a gem. We had the Caribbean chicken and blackened tuna, both were excellent. The waiter (Rafael) was extremely helpful."

  • "The coconut shrimp was pretty good. The chicken dumplings were terrible. Tasted like opening a salt shaker and dumping it into you mouth. NASTY! Service was great! Alberto was very friendly. Just tried a couple apps as we were sampling a few of the spots in the old San juan hotel."

  • "We have eaten at Koco's every time we are in Puerto Rico which has been many times over the past 10 years. They have many new menu items, it changes often but still have some of the staples which I hope never change. The wait staff is attentive and knowledgeable about how the food is prepared and they make an awesome pomegranate cosmo if that is your preference. I highly recommend it to anyone who is in San Juan"

  • "Chicken dumpling appetizer was delicious, strong drinks, very pretty little space... Service was just ok. Took awhile to get anything even though it was a Tuesday night and there was only one other table. Tuna steak tasted very fishy... Would not recommend. My boyfriend got a grouper dish which was much better than mine but still just average"

  • "Beautifully decorated space; the food was good and a interesting mix of ingredients but not memorable; had plaintain gnocchi which was a good and satisfying dish; best was the choco koco dessert and the staff really was nice and made us feel comfortable and ensured we had a good dining experience."

  • "I usually like to find resterants outside of hotels but Koco's was a Pleasant surprise. The cerveche appetizer was exceptional. I was afraid to order a chicken dinner thinking that it would be boring. I was pleasantly surprised. It was unique and flacerfull. Just what I wanted from a carabean island."

  • "My husband and I ate here on May 31st, 2013. We were staying in Isla Verde and wanted a modern version of the typical fried Puerto Rican food. This place had excellent food. One thing to note is that it does get mostly tourist so it is best to inform your server if you are not in a hurry, as they are not on island time here. We had the chicken fricassee dumplings for our appetizer, which were decent, but the rest of the meal was amazing! I ordered the "Kokonut shrimp" appetizer with a side of the root vegetable gratin for dinner, and my husband got the seared tuna steak. Both dishes were amazing, but my personal favorite was the shrimp. It a very romantic spot with low lighting tucked away in the back of the hotel."

  • "We are home from San Juan and still craving the scallops. Very good seafood and the best service we had in San Juan."
    Dined on 4/5/2013
  • "Based on reviews, we ordered 3 recommended appetizers and a salad. Coconut shrimp & Scallops were bothe very sweet. Fish tacos were spicy but tasted more of bacon than fish. Salad was good but nothing special. There were only 3 other small partie in the restaurant. We would not go back because there are a number of less expensive local restaurants nearby such as Don Jose's, Mia Casita, Platos..."

  • "We were sent here by our concierge. Maybe the main chef was away, because the food was not good at all. However our server was very nice & attentive. I'd try somewhere else."

  • "This is by far one of the worst restaurant experiences I've in a long time. The food was OK; nothing to crave about. You can find better taste in other restaurants in the area. The service was the slowest. Our waiter (Rico) forgot about us the entire time. We ordered drinks and instead of bringing all of them at once he took the time to bring on at a time. After two an a half hours in the restaurant we wanted to leave but nobody showed up with the bill. We had to ask another waiter to bring it so we could continue with our night. Needless to say, I don't recommend it."

  • "We were staying at El San Juan, was a bit concerned about poor reviews. They were wrong the night WE went! Service was impeccable, food was very good! Prices are reasonable, don't hesitate to go! Grouper with mofongo was excellent, Maui with risotto also great!"

  • "It's inside a casino so there is not really much light coming in from the shrouded windows. Looks like a posh place to have a nice dinner before going out on the town. It's pretty large and can accommodate big groups, but also intimate enough for couples. Food was good and felt fancy. Service was solid and no complaints."

  • "The food at Koco was excellent but our poor service impacted our overall experience. My meal was not as hot as I would have liked, but I ate it anyway since our waitress was nowhere to be found. Our drinks were not refilled & we had to stop the food runner several times to get what we needed. As we looked around the restaurant, we saw very attentive service being provided by other waitstaff, so I don't think service is an issue for the restaurant as a whole- we were just unlucky. I made the hostess aware of our complaints when we left. It was unfortunate because had the service been better, it might have been my favorite restaurant meal."

  • "Me, my wife and two friends ate at Koco two nights ago and we would recommend it to others. The portions are small but the quality is there. We ordered a salad, fried calamari (one of the best I've had), scallops, and the coconut shrimp (also very good). The waiter was very friendly. We ordered the crab cake and 10 minutes later the cook came out and said they are out of it but that he would bring over chicken dumplings. We were a little taken back that he didn't say it differently since we were looking forward to eating seafood. We told him we didn't want that and the waiter apologized after we told him about the cooks comments. All in all we enjoyed our meal and would recommend it if you stay at the El San Juan."
