Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant was very nice. We sat with a small group (8) and our chef was so talented. He did things with food that I've never seen before. He created volcanoes with onions, and the meat melted in your mouth. Everything was prepared on a grill right in front of us. The only thing about this experience that was disappointing was the fact that it was advertised as a "sunset" special. Not familiar with Lahaina's geography we thought we would get to watch the sunset. We had only been in Maui a few days. The restaurant is nowhere near the water so to me the advertising seemed to be a little misleading. Apart from that it was a great experience and I would definitely visit again. Prices were very reasonable."

  • "We usually go to the tepanyaki at the Sheraton since it a favorite of our kids. This year we tried Kobe's and are so glad we did. The food was great, our cook was fantastic. Super entertaining, kids said it was so much better than the other place. More reasonBle and a lot more food. We will be back next year!!!!"

  • "Grease laden surfaces, very slow service, disinterested staff, mediocre chef, terribly hot room with poor ventilation. Disappointing evening, will not return nor recommend to our friends and family."

  • "We had a fantastic time at Kobe! The food was fantastic and the cocktails were great too! I have never experienced a meal quite like that!!"

  • "The food was good. We were sitting in the upstairs area, it was really hot and smoky. We smelled like we spent the day cooking once we got out. The ventilation was definitely a problem."

  • "We eat at Kobe in Lahaina every time we visit Maui (which is often). The chefs never fail to put on a great show and the food is always wonderful. We will be back."

  • "Great for children. They eat better & are kept entertained. It's more interesting for them as they become part if the whole process. A bit loud for the older set."

  • "We made reservations to dine at Kobe, I thought the point of making a reservation was to avoid waiting. We had to wait for 30 minutes to be seated. When we were at out table, the server, while distributing the glasses of water at our table, accidentally broke one glass on the cooking surface, there were glass shards everywhere, we were waiting, dumbfounded for the wait staff to follow protocol and clear the mess, but that was not the case, we had to call the manager, who promptly moved us to another table that was just vacated (the restaurant was very busy that night). To say the least, the person that saved the night was the cook, the food was great and his teppanyaki skills were superb."

  • "scottie, our chef was awesome. entertaining but most of all the food was perfectly seasoned . . . not too salty and not to bland. also he had a great ides to cook all the veg first instead of cooking it last and the veg would get all black from the oil of the meats . it was a perfect belated valentines night from the time we entered until we left!"

  • "Hit the early bird special between 5:30 - 6:00 you get a better deal, or if you are local you get a discount. Food is great the cooks that cook for you put on a great show cooking in front of you. I would recommend this place, tourist would enjoy going there to."

  • "The cook who prepared our food was awesome and the experience was incredible. My girlfriend and I enjoyed ourselves very much with the flaming onion and other tricks. All the grilled food was delicious as well."

  • "This can be lots of fun, maybe once or twice. A lot depends on whether your chef is having fun; ours wasn't the last time, so the whole performance cooking thing was a little strained. The restaurant is getting along in years and showing its age. The food was fine but not exceptional. Since you sit at tables of 8, it's nice to have a party of 8 yourself, just in case your tablemates are not interested in enjoying a communal experience. We three adults were not able to engage the four 20-somethings at our table in anything beyond hello, so it was just uncomfortable all around. So: Go once for sure, take 7 other people with you, maybe go a little later in the evening when the chefs have hit their stride."

  • "Overall it was ok, if you are looking for a great place for sushi, keep looking. Tappan chef was good, waitress was good the bartender not so much. It's a solid there stars."

  • "We had a very enjoyable evening at Kobe's. It's a hibachi-style setting and lets you interact with the table chef and the other patrons. We met some very nice people and loved the food. Pleasant experience!"

  • "Our servers were terrible. They messed up a few of our dinner orders, drink orders took 20minutes to get to us. Then when my son asked for a refill, the waiter looked at him and made a snide remark....my husband told the waiter 'GET MY SON A REFILL NOW.' Our cook was nice, he did inform us that he was 'new'...so that explained why he wasn't as energetic as the other cooks around our table.I've been to Kobe's a couple of years ago, and remembered it being a good experience. I doubt I will bring my family back there again due to the poor service. The food was amazing, but not good enough to justify the poor customer service."

  • "Loads of great food, well cooked and a great chef with a sense of humour. Looks a little old when you first walk in but you need to remember it's an iconic restaurant, don't judge this book by its cover."

  • "Kobe's is one of our favorite spots. We always go a couple of times when we visit Maui."

  • "The food was really average here and the chef doing the cooking was just Ok. Pretty much made an exploding volcano and did a little show with his knives, but little interaction with patrons - even the kids. I went for the food so the entertainment wasn't paramount, but the food was really disappointing. If you are "hankering" for Tepanyaki, wait till you get home."

  • "Everything was top notch. 8 year daughter didn't want to go, by the time we were finished she wanted to come here every night. The chef was very entertaining and fun. Kept everyone involve. It was a great time with great food!"

  • "I don't know if there was a lack of staff or what, but I saw only one waiter that served over 10 different groups. I didn't get rice until after my meal, no refills on drinks until the end, and I didn't get one of my sushi rolls that I ordered. To what I saw, it was a lack of staff on hand."

  • "Good tepanyaki restaurant in Maui. Scallops and Kobe steak was superb. The ambience needs a bit of work but the food more than makes up for it."

  • "A very Benihana like experience. A little rough around the edges but the food was good and the chef had some new tricks. Only real problem was that we waited over a half hour to be seated past our reservation time."

  • "Was disappointed because we had to ask for soup and tea while chef was cooking our meal. It should have been served before the meal without us having to ask for it."

  • "We had dinner here on Christmas Eve while vacationing in Maui. Service was friendly and efficient. Show was entertaining! We sat with some folks from NYC that shared one do their coupons with us, so total for 3 (with two drinks each) at the early dinner was $70 with tip. Not bad, chicken teriyaki was good, nothing fancy. Vegetables were mostly onions, but did like the last minute scoop of sprouts We would come back"

  • "Very good food, my fiance and I were seated with one other couple, who was just newly wed (3 months). It was kind of awkward sitting so close to the other couple (since there are seats for 8-9), but worked out in the end. At one point I was out of water, and the waiter came by and asked if I needed water! Yes, please? Price is right (a little pricy if it were just food, but you get a show with it!) Great food, great show, great price!"

  • "Food is pretty good, but that's not why you go. The chef we had, a Maui native, was very entertaining and our kids loved it!"

  • "Restaurant is showing its wear. Upon entry, you are greeted with the stale smell of the burnt greases from the grills. Wonder if the vents need to be cleaned. But, very good food with delightful (mostly Benihana trained) teppanyaki chefs. Delighted our 5-year old grandson on his first visit to a teppanyaki restaurant. Reasonable prices and you can find coupons in most of the giveaway promotion books you can grab at the airport."

  • "Good food served at the grill, plenty of food shared by all. Chef prepares in front of you and so you can have it cooked to your preference. Sunset specials available, check restaurant for times. Some chefs are very talented with the knives and put on a great show, love the volcano!"

  • "Vegan accommodating but not as good as Benihana. Very friendly staff."

  • "Took my newly wed wife there and we had seats on the side of the hibachi table where you couldn't really see anything. I even asked good seats prior. Too crowded, too many people seated around 1 table. Too greedy to make more money per table. It destroys all comfort by sitting in shoulder to shoulder next to someone you never met. Cook was extremely boring. He didn't do any fun moves. Just normal cooking without any special cooking skills. Food was good. Carpet is wrong choice for restaurant where food and drinks and continuously spilled into. It stinks, smells and is sticky."
