Diner Reviews
  • "I love Kiwami and it has become our go to place in Studio City for sushi. I think it's better (and less crowded) than Katsu-ya in Studio City. Also Katsuya at Americana, LA Live, and Hollywood do not stand up to Kiwami. It's not cheap, but it's far better for the money than if you go to the Katsuya locations outside Studio City. I love the rakamuri - but they have limited supplies. This is a good go to item that covers a lot of flavors. Here are some other go-to favorites: Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice] Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno Salmon Sashimi with Caviar Miso Cod Corn Tempura BSC Honey Roll Unagi"

  • "So, Kiwami is not as fun and energetic as Katsuya but the quality of the fish is really amazing and the menu has most of the same specialties as all of chef Katsuya's restaurants. I would suggest going at happy hour, sitting out on the patio is nice. The only downfall is the atmosphere of the restaurant, very bland and way way too bright, it's like dining in a cafeteria. Not a good date spot...."

  • "Best experience here so far - the staff is friendlier. Food is always good - would prefer less emphasis on crab on the menu, but you can substitute - unfortunately they charge for the change, which is like being penalized for your crab allergy"

  • "The food and service were wonderful as usual. We actually sat for along time and the chairs were pretty uncomfortable. We love the restaurant but this is the only negative."

  • "This is a perfect place to take a person who thinks he or she does not like sushi. There are other things they can order, but if they are willing to give the sushi a try they may become a convert. The service was fast and friendly. I appreciated the reasonable priced valet parking. Go early, as others have said, they do run out of the happy tray for two, which is a great deal. Give this place a try."

  • "They accomodated our party of 8 on a busy Saturday night, and kept the drinks and food coming. Food was comparable to other places in the Katsu-ya empire (good, with some interesting specials as well as omakase tasting menus available). Enjoyed the carpaccio with truffles. The room is nice and apparently draws valley-dwelling celebrities, if you are into that kind of thing."

  • "Great Sushi, imaginative menu, fresh fish. One of our favorite places."

  • "If Katsu-ya were not a stone's throw down the street this restaurant might have scored higher points. The classics on the menu are all there. None of the items were particularly disappointing & fairly similar to expected. The main issue we had was with the service, which I feel has a bad impact on my enjoyment of the food. Kiwami has a far nicer decor than Katsu-ya, but the service is far worse. Our waiter, while sweet, gave contradictory answers to all our questions. Our food took forever to arrive & several times we were brought someone else's dish, regrettably having to send the server back to their search for the correct table. This seemed to be happening with several other diners. They clearly have some kinks to iron out."

  • "The food was delicious but the scene was a little busy. Also the service seemed hectic. Otherwise delicious and staff was very courteous."

  • "My girlfriends and I had lunch yesterday @ Kiwami and were thoroughly surprised by the quality of food. We have been taking Japanese cooking lessons and were delighted by the light and feathery tempura, very fresh sashimi, excellent miso soup and the variety offered in the bento lunch. The bento lunch was very filling and delicious with a wide variety of dishes such as chicken meatballs, tempura fried shrimp and vegetables, a cucumber salad and miso soup. The vegetables were perfectly cooked, the chicken meatballs were delicious with their light teriyaki sauce, The service was impeccable and I can't wait to come back again to try more items on their menu."

  • "This place is a must try for Japanese food lovers. The fish is always amazingly fresh! The seared albacore with shaved truffles is a must have despite the price tag ($38/ plate!!!) Overall a great and solid restaurant from Chef Katsu-Ya. The patio area is a bit small, however I seems to appreciate it much better than the dining room. The sushi bar is always lots of fun to discover new dishes and get the goodies from your sushi Chefs ;)"

  • "The food was great. The lobster tempura was addictive. I reccomend this restaurant to anyone looking for a casual dinner on a Friday night. Very crowded, and small though. Bring your own wine wouldnt hurt either. $20 corkage fee though."

  • "recently had lunch at Kiwami with my son and daughter. Not always knowing what to order we relied on the wait staff to help us. They were remarkable and we ate the best sushi that i have ever had. Very delicate flavors and texture, oh my. Great place to go...."

  • "Kiwami is part of the Katsuya chain in Los Angeles but they are somewhat better in quality and higher in $$$ for the sushi. The sushi is served very well appointed and always fresh tasting with excellent accompanying daikon, sea salt, lemon etc. by very knowledgeable and seasoned sushi chefs. The fare is consistent but best on Tuesdays and Fridays as these are fish shopping days."

  • "I dined with a colleague on a monday night. We had to wait about 15 minutes when we had a reservation as they seated walk-ins before us. The service was inattentive and slow. (There were people who sat down at the sushi bar about 30 minutes after us, were served first, and left before us)!?!?. The food was delicious but it was a forgettable exerience."

  • "From the minute we walked in, the hostess made us feel so welcome. The food, as always, was superior. Just delicious. The service was incredible also - they brought a basket to put our purses in so we didn't have to set them on the floor, our water glasses were constantly refilled, and the server was happy to answer any questions. On this night, the manager impressed us as well. My daughter bumped her nose and hurt herself. The manager brought her a bag of ice and, at the end of the meal, a special ice cream treat. We really appreciated the gestures."

  • "We were seated 30 minutes after our reservation which was frustrating. The service was a bit clumsy but still acceptable. While the food was still above average the quality has taken a noticeable turn for the worse over the last several months. The dishes just don't seem to be prepared as skillfully or carefully as they uses to be. I left feeling disappointed for the second or third time in a row unfortunately. It looks like it might be time to find a new favorite sushi place."

  • "I have been to Kiwami at LEAST a dozen times, and this will be the last. We had reservations at 5:30, and were seated promptly. We ordered only THREE items- sashimi salad and trio mini handrolls (from the happy hour menu), and 1 order of uni sushi. The salad and uni arrived after TWENTY minutes, and the hand rolls arrived at 55 minutes, with the announcement that it was last order time for happy hour. The server said everyone arrived at once, so the sushi chef was backed up. Although the servers themselves were very nice, that is a lame excuse for a sushi restaurant with 5 chefs. Perhaps they have become too popular - it's time for me to move on."

  • "So of course this is KIWAMI and while it was my first time there, I still felt it a tad over priced for some items. Service was good - not very good but good. I would go back but there are so many really good sushi restaurants in our L.A. area, don't have to rush."

  • "All I can say is "WOW!" I just had the most amazing dining experience! Everything I put in my mouth was absolutely delicious!!!! Even the manager came over to check on us several times. Her name is Mitsue, and she was extremely attentive and hospitable. We loved it all. You MUST try this Katsu-ya group restaurant!"

  • "It wasn't my first visit to Kiwami and I'm a fan of all of the Katsuya Group's establishments. That said, I had a very disappointing experience on my last visit. The food was so-so, the service was unattentive. All very uncharacteristic of what I normally expect at their restaurants. I am much more unlikely to go back after this last experience there."
