Diner Reviews
  • "Service was superbly attentive, knowledgeable and professional. The food...needs improvement. The burger, although uniquely constructed, was overdone...for both of us. The house made ravioli too thick and actually too, tough to cut with a fork along its edges; and the sauce lacking in flavor. On Thursdays, they have select wines half price by the bottle; the selections were great and the wines quite good. Will return and give it another shot after a few weeks."

  • "I found this restaurant online and read some pretty good things. There aren't enough photos. It's not quite fine dinning but it's definitely up there, and the price is respectable. For being affiliated with a culinary school, I would have expected more choices. I would definitely go back again if the menu is expanded or updated choices."

  • "We loved the food, shrimp and grits, and seared ahi tuna was literally outstanding. We are sticklers for ambiance and it wasn't amazing. Not many people in there so it was quite and awkward music. Overall just for the food it is worth the time and money. It was very reasonable."

  • "We met some friends for brunch and were completely pleased with our experience at Kitchen on Cary. Our food was great--I had the biscuits and gravy and the gravy was on point and tasted great; the biscuits were fresh, clearly made in house, and very flavorful. The staff was also wonderful. They were great about keeping our drinks filled and were timely with appetizers and entrees. We were there to catch up with friends, and the staff, while attentive, did not hover or rush us out of the door. Would definitely go back and have already recommended Kitchen on Cary to friends. Can't wait to go back and try them for dinner."

  • " Friendly, welcoming atmosphere, easy parking in a deck across the street ( and they validate parking!). Understated, trendy decor; great open air feel. Service was friendly and attentive with helpful suggestions. Great cocktails, nice wine list, and food was great. The only negative was a flatbread that sounded enticing ( may have been a special) but fell short. It was bland and dry, not crispy at all as you'd expect. Everything else was very good. Notables included shrimp and grits, fish of the day with saffron rice and pinapple relish, seafood pasta. The fried oyster app was very good and desserts were a hit. Salads are huge. We will definitely be back and have recommended it already. Not sure why this little gem isn't busier!"

  • "This place is really just ok. We went on a Thursday evening and it was pretty dead, only like 2 other tables in the restaurant. Big plus, they had a guy playing live music, very nice! They also have half price wine on Thursdays so we got a nice bottle for $25; score! The food was consistently good around the table, but none of the entrees really wowed anyone in my party. Great space, nice ambiance. I would give it anther try."

  • "We enjoyed our dining experience recently at Kitchen on Cary. Food was interesting, creative, tasty (the truffle chips are really worth a trip) and offered at a terrific price point but a few dishes had room for improvement. The cioppino was too salty for our tastes and the chicken two ways- while good was diminished by an overly sweet pan sauce. On a positive note, the tuna was cooked perfectly and the oysters were a stand out. The kitchen easily and agreeably accommodated a request to make a small plate into a large/entree plate. We were able to taste a glass of wine before ordering - always a nice touch. Parking is easy. "

  • "I returned to Kitchen on Cary for my Anniversary dinner. Again the food was beautifully prepared with fresh ingredients. This time I had the fish tacos. Although I love gourmet food I have difficulty eating rare meat and fish. They cooked the tuna to perfection for me when asked and the flavor was delicious! My husband had the Shrimp pasta and after tasting a bite I wanted his food as well. We shared the fabulously tangy key lime cheesecake for dessert. My husband had the 20 yr old port. This restaurant is not expensive. The portions are satisfying but not overwhelming. Service is attentive but not cloying. I will go again. "

  • "I have been here several times and I am never disappointed. The food, service and atmosphere is such a delight. Alan was our server and he was excellent! The food is creative and the portions are generous. We really enjoyed the live acoustic guitar...nice touch. Thank you for another great experience! We'll be back!"

  • "Wow, what a great dinner, great service complemented by an indoor outdoor vibe that enhanced the historic flavor of the Shockoe Slip restaurant. We shared Eastern Shore Crab Cakes with Blended lump and backfin crab, followed by (me) Chesapeake Cioppino. Clams, mussels, shrimp, and market fish, and wow the photos don’t lie. It was amazing, the perfect blend of flavor and seafood. For those who love meat, be advised, the locally sourced Slip Burger with Milton's ground beef, carmelized onions, sauteed mushrooms, wilted spinach, with aged cheddar may just be the best burger in a town KNOWN for burgers. We also enjoyed local Virginia wines, plus a well crafted cocktail to start things off, a rare find in many restaurants now. We'll be back!"

  • "The salmon salad was amazing and the truffle potato chips, well let's just say licking the plate was strongly considered. "

  • "I was looking for a restaurant to have dinner with a girlfriend and I hit the jackpot! We shared multiple small plates; the crab cakes, risotto, and salmon and Brie salad. Each was tasty and beautifully presented. For dessert we shared bread pudding and pot de creme. The latter had amazing flavor but was slightly too soft for my preference. My only complaint is that I wish they did not have wide screen tvs in the bar area. The restaurant is so small that the tvs impede upon the ambiance in the dining area. "

  • "We were a party of 9 for Brunch. My omelette was piping hot very tastee and well presented. Although the Brunch menu is fixed and limited, everyone found something they enjoyed from Eggs Benedict to Sausage Gravey and Biscuits. The waitress was very knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. Food was served quickly and all at once. Portions were large. Bloody Mary's were excellent. "

  • "Creative and delicious dishes made our Open Table experience noteworthy. The potato-crusted rockfish was cooked to perfection and enhanced by the fresh tomato salsa and jasmine rice. My companion's steak from a local rancher was also cooked to perfection and flavored with a topping of bousin cheese. Save room for dessert as our choices were made difficult by so many creative combinations of satisfying sweets. For the true chocolate lover, the pot de creme is a must. The bread pudding was also one of the best we have ever had! Friendly and efficient service topped off our fabulous experience. We will return to Open Table and highly recommend it! "

  • "The wine list was at least commendable. Loud and bright which would not be a deal killer but the food was right off the Sysco truck and poorly executed. We had appetizers then left to cut our losses. Should have done more research before booking My bad!."

  • "The service and the wait time was apparently affected by a large party including several children that were continually running around. We shared an order of ciopinno but it was not divided in the kitchen and thus made for messy eating and a soiled tablecloth."

  • "The menu is always changing, food was hot and prepared as each of us ordered it. Service was a bit slow and unattentive at the start, but improved as our meal progressed. Great modern, clean space, bar drinks were well prepared. I highly recommend Kitchen. I've eaten here several times now and they are consistently good."

  • "This place had a great selection of food, they offered small plates and large plates so you could opt to get a couple of small plates and sample or get a small plate as an appetizer. The food was delicious and the presentation and atmosphere made you think you were in an expensive restaurant but the pricing was very reasonable. I would definitely go again! "

  • "Kitchen on Cary is a great restaurant if you are looking to try a lot of different things for a reasonable price. Their small plates and appetizers are the perfect size to order a few for the table. Love their ahi tuna appetizer and the duck potstickers were good, but not as crunchy as we would have liked. We had the ahi tuna tacos and shrimp pasta for dinner, the tacos were delicious and fresh. The shrimp pasta was tossed in a great sauce and tasted very fresh as well. Overall, a great experience: good food at a good price. "

  • "I ordered the shrimp & grits, which I did not enjoy - too much rich sauce/not enough grits; tasted like/consistency of oatmeal. However, my companions all enjoyed their choices, and the dessert was delicious. I'd try it again, but would make a different food choice."

  • "I visited the restaurant with my wife and two other lady friends. All of us tried 4 different dinners and all were outstanding, chicken, burger, steak, and the shrimp pasta. Wine was great, the home made chips and dip, fried oysters, and the salads were fantastic. Can't wait to go back."

  • "The food tasted okay while eating it, however within an hour of leaving both of us experienced an incredible amount of extremity swelling in hands, feet and ankles to the point it was incredibly uncomfortable."

  • "Table for two friends out before "Wicked". Service and ambience was very comfortable. Loved the open air front even though we ate mid restaurant. Helped feel the pulse of the city! Food was presented wonderfully and tasted awesome! Will definitely return again and again"

  • "We arrived before the end of happy hour and ordered glasses of very reasonably priced house wine. A split order of goat cheese salad was more than ample. We each ordered the Chesapeake Cioppino which was excellent as was a split dessert order of Tiramisu. The only suggestion we would make is to serve bread (other than the crostinis with the cioppino) and not address a couple of senior citizens as “you guys.” Richmond is a southern city and “you all” or y’all” would have been nicer. "

  • "The service started before we even entered the restaurant. The manager saw our party getting out of the car and he came out and offered assistance. Inside the restaurant everyone was friendly and helpful. All of the food ordered was excellent and reasonably priced. We already recommended Kitchen on Cary to friends and we'll be back to enjoy it again. "

  • "This place is a find! It is minimalist in decor, the music is just audible, the staff is efficient and friendly. The food is a cut way above. Here are the dishes we tried: appetizers - potato chips with blue cheese and truffle oil, flash fried oysters and duck confit pot stickers. Winners, winners, winners! Entrees - Chesapeake cioppino, shrimp pasta and fish tacos. The cioppino was the best ever tasted and I've had quite a few versions in San Francisco and the D.C. area. The other entrees were terrific as well. Desserts: bread pudding and oreo cheesecake. Worthy indulgences. Wine list per glass is very small but adequate. One logistical note: they validate parking at a garage that is diagonally across from them. Try it - you'll love it!"

  • "This was my first time at Kitchen. Looked at the menu online and the menu in the restaurant was exactaly the same. Nice upscale space that allowed for conversation without having to talk loudly. Service was good even though we had to ask for some service items. We attributed this being somewhat new, but not an issue. The food was great and well presented. Everyone liked their dishes and they were prepared as we had requested. We will definetly return."

  • "Loved that you could actually engage in a conversation while eating wonderful food. We sat at the bar and the bartender was attentive, but not overly so. Food was delicious, and they were able to meet special dietary needs. Happy hour on Friday? Quite a surprise. Huge bonus is the focus on using local products. Very impressed."

  • "We ordered several small plates to try more food and there were high and low notes. Pot stickers and Seared Tuna were the winners. The broth on the pot stickers was EXCELLENT! Crab cakes were full of crab but tasted "watered down". Oysters were surrounded by a very crunchy breading that didn't allow you to taste the oyster. We did manage to extract one of the oysters from the breading and found it too be good...too bad the rest of them were lost. Fried pickles were made with in-house pickles but were a soggy greasy mess. We sent them back and they were taken off the bill but no replacement was offered."

  • "What a fantastic meal! We were in town for a field hockey tournament and I needed a place on Sat. night to accommodate 7 for my wife's birthday. Kitchen on Cary fit the bill and more. The food was excellent as was the staff. I commend the student chefs from Culinard, they did an excellent job for us Sat. When we are in Richmond next year, we will most certainly be back for more!!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner at Kitchen on Cary. The food was great and our server, Lauren, was awesome! My only complaint is that I wish they had more vegetarian offerings as one of our party was a vegetarian. We will be back!"

  • "This was a great choice for a low-key dinner with good food and drinks. My husband and I started with the crab cakes which were amazing, and I had the cioppino with salmon while my husband had the tuna. The drink selections were great too, and we had a decently priced bottle of prosecco. Highly recommend it for those in the neighborhood or looking to try something new!"

  • "This was our second time here. We went on a whim the first time and enjoyed the food and service enough to give a second chance. We were not disappointed. Excellent food. Love the VA Goat Cheese / Arugula salad. Was enough to split for 2 people. The Chicken 2 ways is really excellent. Great flavor, juicy and tender and wonderful risotto. We will continue to go back."

  • "We discovered this restaurant on Open Table on Christmas Eve. The food and atmosphere was divine. Because we had such a good experience, we decided to try it for Valentine's Day. We invited friends to join us. Again, our experience was wonderful. And our friends have now discovered a favorite spot, too. Everything is cooked to perfection. Specifically, the risottos and desserts are to die for."
