Diner Reviews
  • "We wanted a summer cocktail and a small bite to eat, the staff was not the most friendly. One of my friends did not have the passport and I understand, but my other friends that had the passport where triple check. A little uncomfortable. The drinks where great! And the food was really good. I understand the need to see Id's but we are not criminals in a need to be triple checked."

  • "We've been to Kitchen many, many times. The food escalates from good to fantastic; but the service is consistently between languid and pathetic. Cheerful staff, but seemingly untrained to be alert and responsive. Lately, we waited for 20 minutes for WATER and for someone to take our drink order; at this point the app order was entered and came with the drink order, but then to order the main order needed flagging.... This experience (and others similar) are not deal-changers for now, BUT there are other options in the South End. Your Manager Danielle is STAR."

  • "The best mussels I've had in ages! Also, the duck risotto was a very pleasant surprise."

  • "The concept is old american recipes with a modern twist. The snacks are all from Betty Crocker's cookbook. I'm eating at a restaurant? Choices all heavy, boring, full of cream, sauces and carbs. Over buttered toasted brioche bread incorporated into many appetizers and entrees. My expensive mixed mushroom appetizer had melted cheese on it and was served on brioche. My fish so undercooked left a huge raw piece on my plate. The busboys and hostess 3 times tried to take my husbands food away while he was still eating because they were full and apparently needed the table-- I literally had food in my mouth when they took my appetizer plate. Check delivered while we still had half a bottle of wine. Can't imagine who would go back twice."

  • "My friends and I grabbed an early dinner at Kitchen before a show at the Calderwood. Excellent service. Waiter gave just the right amount of attention to the table. I had the pasta dish which was really yummy…creamy with subtle flavors. I relished every bite. Well done! Everyone I was with enjoyed their choices. Also, we also shared a couple of deserts. I especially thought the cheesecake was nice, not too sweet…the way a good homemade cheesecake would taste. I'll definitely go back; I'd like to try brunch."

  • "I'm all for paying a fair price (or more likely in the south end, paying more) for a good meal, and nothing tasted bad. That said, the scallops were delicious (they should make an entree) and my friend had the duck and enjoyed it. That being said, the potatoes tasted bland and like instant potatoes. My friend was not impressed with the brussells sprouts."

  • "I've been to kitchen 3 times now. Great experience every time. Vintage dishes and cocktails are the theme here and they nail them both."

  • "I went for brunch with a friend on Saturday morning. The ambiance was terrific, the waitstaff was attentive, and the food was delicious- all was great except for the $55 cost for brunch for 2. One of the biggest culprits for why the brunch price tag was so high was because they charge you $4.50 per cup of coffee, which comes in an admittedly nice french press. My friend and I shared 1 french press, which one would think would come out to $4.50 total but they in fact charged us $9. Why would anyone want to pay $9 for 16 ounces of coffee?!? And we made the mistake of getting an 8 ounce refill of coffee, which ended up costing another $4.50. $13.50 on coffee here could almost pay for 2 for brunch at any of the other fabulous S End spots."

  • "This place does the best bacon cheeseburger I have had in Boston! The lobster grits and French toast are also high on the list. Good service and a great music and atmosphere. The bar list and menu is also very impressive. Perfect for any occasion. "

  • "Can't say enough good things. Nice restaurant, comfortable table for 4, great service with everyone always smiling and the food was not only delicious but everything was prepared perfectly even with special orders & needs. "

  • "The appetizers we had were the mushrooms under glass and the mussells - both out of this world good. My wife had the lobster thermadore and I had the cod - both were amazing. Deserts of Lavender honey ice cream and chocolate pudding were also amazing and delicious. Best food we have run into in quite some time. the House Sauvignon Blanc was terrific too - tastes like Sancere but costs allot less. Our server Ali was attentive and friendly - alway there when needed but never intrusive! Great place - we will be back!"

  • "The double cheeseburger with bacon was good. The tagliatelle was good but not special. The chowder was delicious! We really like the decor, the ambience and the location. Their mixed drinks are really fun. Our server was excellent. This restaurant is within 2-3 blocks of some of the best restaurants in Boston, certainly in the South End. I am sure it is difficult to be a stand-out with such stiff competition. We will definitely be back. "

  • "Sunday brunch was extremely good - well prepared dishes, particularly the lobster grits served by friendly and professional staff. The burgers also received rave reviews from my guests. Good range of cocktails well made and generously served. Ambience is relaxed and the room is comfortable with a good view of the kitchen and bar. Only downside was the mediocre coffee but don't think that was specific to the restaurant, it seems to be the norm across the US."

  • "Our reservation was at 8:15 for a party of 7, but we weren't seated until 9pm. They did comp us a round of drinks for the delay, which was great. But the service continued to be very, very slow. It was 10pm when we got our appetizers, and only after asking how much longer it would be. The food is always great at Kitchen, but I've never had such bad service. Not sure I'd recommend it for a large group."

  • "Server excellent. Food superb. Timing very poor. Salads and appetizers arrived BEFORE first cocktail! Entrees arrived before able to order a glass of wine!! Timing issues unfortunate given quality of server and meal. Dining room not busy at the time..... Lovely atmosphere snd staff wonderful. Wonder why timing do off?"

  • "Food was ok nothing to write home about. I got the sole which was decent. I substituted fries instead of the potato and there was an upcharge! Seated in the back and it's overcrowded and excessively loud back there because of the fishbowl like room. Waiter was horrible. Lots of good places in the south end but this is not one of them"

  • "I ate at Kitchen for dinner and really enjoyed the meal. The ambience in the restaurant was really pleasant. I was surprised that the kitchen ran out of Oysters when we ordered them, but we were able to find something else on the menu instead. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. Also, we had some great cocktails!!"

  • "really good food- that feels like someone actually put a lot of energy into its conception. What does that mean? It's unique to Kitchen (and the same can be said about their sister restaurants). Bravo."

  • "Wonderful dinner. Service was outstanding. Attentive but not overbearing. Food was excellent. Mushroom appetizer especially unique and flavorful. Both lamb pie and pasta were excellent. Lamb was especially flavorful with great presentation. Chocolate pudding was fun . Was expeditious without being rushed. Front room was just a little lively noise wise...not bad but suspect back room would be quieter."

  • "Overall, it was a nice scene and the food was good. It was restaurant week, so the menu was missing a few items. The mussels appetizer was a little weak, but the duck entree was good. Chocolate pudding and donuts were yummy for dessert. Very small space! Didn't realize! The staff was very friendly."

  • "I booked Kitchen for my boyfriends birthday and we had an absolutely fabulous time! We were there for restaurant week and we truly enjoyed the plethora of options they offered. The ambiance was spectacularly romantic, especially since we were sitting in the back "greenhouse" esque room with a view of the garden. Although all of the food was delicious, we both got the duck and absolutely adored it. I would recommend eating light before hand since the food is very hearty and filling. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to all couples and families (maybe not children)."

  • "ordered from the restaurant week menu: scallops starter, main course lobster gnocchi, dessert: cheesecake for two. delicious all around. also ordered a side app of oysters rockafeller (nothing special)."

  • "A friend and I dined at Kitchen last week for Restaurant week. I originally made reservations here solely for the dessert that was on the online menu, Bananas foster. Unfortunately, this was not on the menu when we arrived. It seemed as though the waitstaff had heard this disappointment several times from other guests as well. With that said, the food was pretty good. The service was ok, little snobby for my taste, but good enough. We had a great seat in the back overlooking the courtyard, which was the best part of the evening. It's an intimate place, definitely good for a date, with good food. I probably wouldn't try it again, as there are so many other great places in the area, but it's a fine option for the south end."

  • "Food was hit or miss. Some dishes were very good while others were not necessarily bad, but not really good. Dishes were on the small side for the cost. Server was rather absent and absent-minded. Was disappointing."

  • "I was impressed by the food and service at Kitchen, especially considering it was Restaurant Week, so you never know what to expect. Our waitress was attentive, helpful and checked on us frequently. I ordered the French Onion Soup, which was excellent, the lobster thermador, which was so savory and had huge chunks of lobster and the chocolate pudding which was very rich. I cannot wait to dine here again!"

  • "Loved everything about this place except our server. He was all business but not in a good way. Tried engaging him but he was too serious. Will be back...can't let service ruin a good meal."

  • "The hubby and I left with full bellies last weekend. Our server was lovely--very knowledgable about the menu and gave excellent advice. The fresh rolls were a nice surprise--nice and crispy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside. I had trouble deciding between the entrees. I finally chose the Lobster Thermidor, and the hubby got the duck. My entree had big chunks of lobster and delicate gnocchi in a tasty cream sauce. The duck disappeared very quickly from the plate, and got a recommendation as well. The donuts were a sweet cap to the meal. I'd definitely return to check out the rest of the menu!"

  • "My friend and I made a reservation at kitchen to celebrate our mutual milestone birthdays. Our reservation was on a Saturday for 1:00. Not only did it take 10 minutes for anyone to greet us, but our table wasn't ready and we had to stand at the door practically on top of 4 people eating at the bar ( there is no room for people waiting for their table to stand) for almost a half hour."

  • "Went recently for restaurant week. Chose Kitchen because tyre were at least a few items from each course we'd like. Food was great. Sat at the bar, super bartenders especially for such a small space. Only weirdness is the lack of a host. You're kind of standing there waiting for some one to acknowledge you. I get that there's no room for a physical host stand but someone should be always at the door, if that's the case."

  • "We went here for restaurant week and I loved that they gave their full menu for us to choose from. I got the scallops in bacon on top of grits and it was my favorite thing that I got all night. It was so delicious and the sauce that came with it was a really good pairing with eh bacon scallop. I got the duck, and it was a little too fatty for me and I had to remove all the skin from it because it was overwhelming. I then got the donuts which were really good. The raspberry sauce was good too. I would definitely come here again. Ill skip the duck though. Also it is pretty noisy in there, but I chuck it up to restaurant week. It was hot in there too. we sat across the kitchen, which added to it. and all the people probably added to that too."

  • "Days after making reservations for Kitchen, I realized they were part of Marliave and Grotto, both places we have dined at. Knowing this, we knew we must have made a good choice and we definitely were not disappointed. All of our choices were very good (mussels, mushrooms under glass, scallops, beef tenderloin, crispy duck and chicken). The beef tenderloin was "melt in your mouth" good. We thoroughly enjoyed the donuts for dessert too! The service staff was very attentive too. Overall, we were happy with our choice to go to Kitchen for restaurant week and we definitely will go again."
