A word from Kipos Greek Taverna
Kipos means garden in Greek. It’s a taverna, where friends and strangers gather every day to share thoughts, a glass of wine or two, raki, beer, and often Ouzo. Mezedes (small plates) coming to your table, keep the conversation going.

Kipos is a reflection of my childhood: fresh and robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old and modern recipes alike. Kalos Orisate (welcome) to our home.Continued

  • "I love Greek food and everything I got (eggplant dip with pita and spinach pie) was under seasoned (bland) and the spinach pie was dry and over cooked. Nice bright location and friendly service. Other places with better food ."

  • "Since I found out about this restaurant a couple of months ago, I haven't stopped coming around. They make amazing dishes, with fresh baked bread brought to the table. For lunch, their grilled octopus salad is a must-have. The octopus is tender and slightly crisp, not chewy at all. It is quite sincerely the best octopus I have ever had, even rivaling any I've had back at my Caribbean home. I would highly recommend coming to Kipo's and indulging in their amazing dishes!"

  • "Kipos has by far the greatest Greek food in the area. It's almost supernaturally good. The people there are very friendly, although on this latest visit my table kept getting passed by without any offers to refill our water or giving us our check when we were finished. Other than that, the visit was terrific."

  • "The menu delivers everything promised. The feta, arugula, watermelon salad with orange vinaigrette was a brilliant combination. I cannot wait to return. The only problem in Chapel Hill is parking can be a total nightmare. Otherwise an incredible dining experience."

  • "Have been twice for dinner - this was first time for lunch. Menu quite varied and food was well prepared. Two had the chicken souvlaki and the other a special summer salad. Started with a mezze of nava beans, tzatziki and the third a feta combo. All good (but we decided the combo of all 3 was the best!). Had baklava (the size of a piece of pie!) and the chocolate mousse, one with and one without the salt. Two if us worked n the non-salted version and their third devoured the salted one. A good lunch place in a town with not too many of those ..."

  • "I am half Greek, and Olga, the kitchen guru and genius, makes the best lemon-roasted potatoes and baklava in the universe. Excellent cuisine, matched by the heartfelt service. Kipos provides comfort with genuine elan. I had been to Kipos about a month previously and raved about the potatoes. The restaurant manager remembered me and brought as appetizer an order of the potatoes for me and my wife, who was having her first Kipos experience — it is by no means her last. The restaurant manager's son was our waiter, and he was exceptional."

  • "We are repeat diners at this wonderful restaurant. The staff is helpful and polite. Food selection is great with healthy, decadent and other types of fares."

  • "The food is sooo delicious...fresh, quality ingredients! I would highly recommend the xoriatiki salad, souvlaki, lamb burger and just about everything on the menu is a can't miss! I've never had feta cheese that is as fabulous as the cheese they serve there! They also have an extensive Greek wine list that complements the food...just ask for help, and they will recommend a great bottle of wine!"

  • "We dined on Saturday at 6:30. The restaurant was crowded but not packed. We were seated at a table for two, among other small tables lining the windows that overlook the street. We ordered starters (SKORDALIA and olives) and mains (MOUSSAKA and XORIATIKI salad). The waiter did not return to the table for at least 20 minutes. After 10 minutes, a "runner" brought only the olives and the salad. At about 20 minutes after starting, the waiter noticed that the other starter and main had not arrived and apologized. Eventually we received the other portions but no Peta bread for the SKORDALIA--we had to ask the waiter to bring it. With the sun shining directly into the window, we were soon baked. The food was OK, but we won't hurry back."

  • "I've been to Greece several times, love the food. This is the best and most Greek-like restaurant in the state...really.....amazing array of menu items, greek wines, a bouzouki player (and a belly dancer once a week)...the decor is mindful of places I ate at in Mykonos, rustic-modern. The owner, who is Greek, and a well known local restaurant owner, brought his sister over from Greece to manage the baking, amazing, and his manager is also from there. Now my favorite restaurant in the town."

  • "Sitting outside in the perfect weather was great. The service was perfect. The food was very good, but one dish was too salty - i have had that happen here before. Does the chef have taste buds?"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed our dinner here on a Sunday evening of a holiday weekend. The food was very good, albeit a little pricey. The only drawback was the service. Admittedly, we were sat just after a couple of large parties, but the restaurant should have been able to deal with the rush. I still recommend Kipos and plan on going back."

  • "Fun place with live Greek music and even a belly dancer. Food was authentic, creative and really good. The staff was very friendly. Our server was a little slow, somewhat inattentive, but we were not in a hurry so it wasn't a big issue."

  • "Five of us went to Kipos and ordered a number of appetizers family style so we could each try a lot of different things. The octopus was really well done, as were the grilled vegetables. We went through so many different plates. The service was great. Our server really helped us understand the menu and had many great suggestions. Barely left room for dessert, but glad we did."

  • "I had been to Kipos a couple of times before with a large group and the service with our group of 30+ was phenomenal. So this past weekend I took my mother and father who were visiting from out of town there and the service and food was just amazing. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and very helpful with choosing dishes. The atmosphere was very bright and lively unlike most restaurants where you can barely see the food, let alone your guests. Now the food is always the best part and I'm not really one to go out of my way for greek food but you can rest assured that Kipos is now at the top of my list of must go places and I will be returning again very shortly."

  • "Since Nikos closed in Durham, we've hoped for a Greek restaurant nearby. We're so happy to have Kipos not too far away in Chapel Hill. We only wish it wasn't so noisy (all hard surfaces and loud diners, including one shrieking woman at the next table). But the food is all very good, varied and creatively done."

  • "A really great addition to west franklin street. The food and wine are excellent -- lots of locally sourced ingredients, very fresh. Not the sloppy over cooked fare of your typical american Greek restaurant -- this is really good food. "

  • "Have been here many times for lunch and thee menu is great and it is quite and one can hear yourself talk. DO NOT go for dinner unless you want to be shouting the whole time. The noise level is very high and the Greek piped music even louder."

  • "Kipos is my absolute favorite restaurant in the triangle. I love greek music, greek food, and the furniture, lighting, atmosphere and vibe of this place. I try different dishes every time and I have absolutely loved every one of them. There is nothing here that isn't fantastic. The desserts are amazing and I love that there is a bakery to pick some of them up when you don't have time to dine in. The owner, manager, and wait staff are super friendly and cool."

  • "We decided to go Greek for our Easter dinner, having been in Greece for that notable, festive occasion. Our menu: calamari, which we found a little too breaded. Lamb chops: 3 lean chops on top of a small smattering of overcooked tomatoes, eggplants and potatoes. Disappointing at $28.00. And not even a 'wow' in terms of flavor. Dessert: chocolate mousse with a drizzle of olive oil (no need) and sea salt. And, a big baklava which made up in size what it didn't have in flavor. Best part: coffee, freshly brewed and large cups. And atmosphere, lively, fun, and as Greek as you'll find in these parts. Would we go again? Yes, for atmosphere, drinks and a small mezze."

  • "The food was the best we've had outside of Greece, and the belly dancer made the evening especially fun! Fantastic atmosphere!!"

  • "Kipos is like a snazzed up Greek restaurant, just missing the arbors and the shaded tables, though there are a few in the back courtyard and an upstairs terrace. It is a bright, whitewashed cheerful place with a menu that is more Greek than most Triangle Greek restaurants. Some things are a bit heavy on the spice, whether it is oregano, lemon, pepper--it seemed the chef's hand was a bit heavier than you find in Greece. Many mezzo on the menu in addition to entrees and roasted meats though my partner's rotisserie lamb was well-flavored but as chewy as a shoe. Service was quite pleasant."

  • "In its year of existence, Kipos' quality standards have failed to maintain its initial high attainments for consistent authenticity., and the Triangle still lacks a true Greek traditional restaurant. Gone are the days when owner Giorgio patrolled with olives and things to be tried, replaced by a more workmnlike effort and more fusion of cuisines."

  • "If you haven't been there, you have to go. Over past 20 years in Chapel Hill, I've eaten out 5 days out of 7. Kipos has been my favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill / Durham since I discovered it about a year ago. Why? The food is always the highest quality (particularly the fish and veggies, for me), fun because its authentic. You can be incredibly healthy (whole fish, veggies), carnivorous, and/or decadent (the Greek pastries - don't look at them when you walk in or you'll blow any diet). The staff, all entertaining and happy, remember their customers. My only genuine regret - love it so much I don't let myself go to other restaurants. They're good, but not great."

  • "Our table felt like the 'after thought table.' It was in a space that shouldn't have contained a table at all. The beet salad appetizer was mediocre with some sort of garlicky, lumpy substance that was actually unpleasant. My guest's roast lamb entree was adequate but not remarkable. My chicken souvlaki was OK. Both were what I'd consider lunch portions and there was nothing special about the presentation. We finished our meals rather quickly which was another indication that they were not very substantial. The best thing about our meal was the wine. The best thing about the restaurant was its energy. It's a busy, noisy place and I'd recommend it for groups rather than for couples wanting a special meal in a less frenetic atmosphere."

  • "....then you will enjoy Kipos. My wife and I met in Greece, and have travelled widely on the islands and mainland. Kipos is as close as we have come (including the "Greek" towns of Chicago, Detroit and Melbourne Australia) to real homestyle Greek cooking. Love it, and our waitress was patient, polite, and non-intrusive."

  • "Love the look of the place and the food. It can get loud, but I like to go on Sunday night when for some reason it isn't crowded and the noise level is fine."

  • "We started with a cold mezze platter. They brought skordalia instead of tzatziki, but the waiter, on being reminded, quickly brought the tzatziki and left the skordalia. On the whole, the mezze were not as good as at Tallula's in Chapel Hill, but the taramosalata was very good, and the tzatziki was excellent. My main course spanakopita (or as they called it spanakotiropita, because there was lots of feta with the spinach) was ample and tasty, My son ordered the grilled whole trout, which was excellent. The baklava was good but not great, but the galaktobourika was outstanding. Our waiter was attentive but not obtrusive throughout, and the tariff was quite reasonable."

  • "We love Greek tavern food and were not disappointed with two out of our three dishes, but the lamb sandwich was a travesty of over cooked leathery lamb...so sad. Stick with the lambburger which was GEAT."
