Kipos Greek TavernaLovely spotThe food is always delicious, but what I really come for is the ambiance--what they've done with the interior is GORGEOUS, plus there was live music, a belly dancer, and spontaneous folk dances. What's not to like?? The pastitsio was maybe a little heavy for me, but that's more an issue of personal taste; I loved the beet salad, and the taste of souvlakia I had.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous food, amazing atmosphere,Fabulous food, amazing atmosphere, great service. Go there as soon as possible!!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMYou have to try the brunch! *****I continue to find pieces of this place that satisfy. Just shared a magical brunch with my family. Kipos will continue to seat itself as one of Chapel Hill's best!5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMMy new favorite restaurant!I really love the decor and food! On weekends they have live music and belly dancers to entertain their guests. The owner will go from table to table to check in on his guests usually with right out of the oven slices of spanakopita....and they large slices!
The food is very good and my favorite is the Greek salad and Fisherman's stew. Can't wait to try their brunch menu.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMKipos continues to deliver *****Kipos continues to deliver. The best Greek restaurant I have ever experienced. Spent most of my time messing around in the mezze, I truly had trouble finding something I didn't like....4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMTerrific restaurant, just too loudWe went to Kipos two nights in a row with different parties. The service is super-friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is exuberant. We loved our selections, especially the xoriatiki salad (cucumber, tomato, red onion, bell pepper and feta with a delicious dressing). Main courses - pastitsio, moussaka and baked eggplant were all delicious and plentiful. The baklava is extraordinary. We've spent a lot of time in Greece and my children and I felt as though we had just spent a few hours in Greece after leaving the restaurant. Only one big caveat - we ate inside and, as the restaurant fills up, the noise level becomes truly intolerable. There is no way to be heard without shouting. Outside dining might help.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was very good, EnjoyedFood was very good, Enjoyed the octopus appetizer a lot.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything wonderful exceptEverything wonderful except noise level inside was deafening. Fortunately we ate outside so it didn't bother us. Patio was lovely.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMLET'S DO IT AGAIN !!!!HAD DINNER THERE FIRST - I totally enjoyed the food - portions nice sized - presentation excellent - everything looked very fresh. Service was good BUT waiter and help staff did not pick up old cocktail glasses after serving a new drink- no one wants to count how many drinks everyone has had. Too many glasses on the table - had to ask to have them removed and had to ask to find waiter to get a drink. Otherwise would highly recommend it - Owner delightful - made you feel very welcome!!!!
Brought friends for lunch - service excellent - a bit disappointed in the size of my salad - but it was wonderful - FOOD IS EXCELLENT!!!4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMThis place is truly a one of a kindThis place is out of control. Off the charts. Me and my extended family went to simply grab some traditional Greek cuisine and Giorgio took us on a roller coaster ride of great fun and laughter. My visiting New York City family said it was the best food they have ever had. They couldn't find a single dish they didn't love. They said there isn't a single place in Manhattan that compares. This place is truly a one of a kind. I can't believe it ended up in my neighborhood.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMI love eating here. FeelsI love eating here. Feels like walking into a little bit of Greece each time! The only thing is that it is a bit on the loud side.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMA fun, upbeat, interestingA fun, upbeat, interesting space with outdoor dining. "Authentic Greek" in the U.S. often means homestyle food made with imported or grocery store ingredients. Here, though, the 6 dishes we tasted were all upscale quality, fresh, AND tasted the way good food tastes in Greece, right down to the bread and greens. Braised pork, baked eggplant, pastitsio, and keftedes, all delightful. This restaurateur always pleases, but we are particularly excited about Kipos.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMThird trip. Truly a wonderfulThird trip. Truly a wonderful experience each time!4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMA month old and already a LEGEND!I can't stop going back to this place! This is one of Chapel Hill's best places bound for legend...4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMThree of us went for brunchThree of us went for brunch on a Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately they were out of the lamb burger we wanted, but we made do with other dishes, which were quite good. The real surprise of the meal was the side of fries -- this place makes the best fries in Chapel Hill, no lie! I might go back for brunch again, but frankly, the brunch menu is not huge and tends more to breakfasty foods than lunchy foods. Next time I try Kipos, it will probably be for dinner.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMAuthentic Greek food / Fun SettingLove having an authentic Greek restaurant in town! The food is fresh and they welcome eating family style, like the Greeks actually do! Mike, our waiter made excellent recommendations and was very personable and attentive. The restaurant was packed but we were well taken care of. I could eat Santorini Fave, Greek Salad and a glass of wine every day! Add the Calamari or the Ouzo cured Salmon and call it a great dinner! I will be back!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Greek food in the TriangleWonderful, authentic Greek food! Great service, great music. Could use some acoustic sound-dampening panels to moderate sound-level.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMI have spent extensive timeI have spent extensive time in Greece and am rather particular with the Greek restaurants I've been to in the States. Kipos definitely had an authentic feel and the food was delicious!4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMSecond visit and still like it!Second visit. Food was not quite as memorable but still very good. They have a good selection of Greek wines and this is a good place to taste them and to educate your wine skills. I do find the environment nice but noisy especially if you're seated in the middle sections of the restaurant. Decor is very well done and chef is always around greeting customers with a smile and a sense of fun.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Greek food in the Triangle! This was our second visit to Kipos Taverna and we loved it. This is the best Greek food restaurant we have been to besides those in Greece. Everything we ordered arrived on time, the taste was fantastic, the service staff was outstanding and the music made our night. My only complaint is that it takes us 35 minutes to drive there but it is worth it. Can't wait to visit again and try other dishes.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, very noisyThe food here is outstanding!!
All Greek wines gave me pause, but the somalier is very helpful and the wine we had was fabulous!
The service is unbelievably good! Very friendly and knowledgable staff.
The only complaint is it is very noisy, so not good if you want to be able to talk to the people across the table. But good if you like a lively place.
I have been back many times and will go again!4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food, smaller portionsGood food, smaller portions though very tasty. Moderate pricing, great ambiance. Give it a try!4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful placeWe went to Kipos Greek Traverna for lunch. We have had a series of "bad eats" so we held our breath and hoped for the best. Trust me, we exhaled quickly. We were greeted warmly by the head of the house, promptly escorted to a window table where our waitstaff person introduced himself and brought fresh bread to the table. We ordered the calamari salad which was so unbelievably good and plentiful we could have stopped there. We also tried the chicken kabob with house made pita and the orzo cured salmon. Each and every dish was delish. Service was excellent. On the way out we stopped and chatted with the barista and ended up getting café lattes to go. They, too, were wonderful. We highly recommend visiting Kipos Traverna.4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent authentic GreekExcellent authentic Greek food just like Yiayia makes! Loved everything, but espcially the tiropita made with homeade filo... OUTSTANDING!4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMI have anxiously awaitingI have anxiously awaiting going to Kipos since they opened, and it did not disappoint. The four entrees we had, and two salads we shared, were delicious, and I plan to go back frequently. We were seated in a small side room, which felt a bit claustrophobic (which is the reason I gave it a lower rating for Ambiance. In the future, I would try to get seated in the main dining room, if possible. This is a gem of a place, whether just for a week night meal or a special occasion.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMgood food, skip the drinksDrinks were prohibitively expensive; Grey Goose martini W/extra Chambord was 22 bucks. NYC pricing there....... Had asked for martini with extra Chambord, what arrived had barely a hint of Chambord, so I asked for a shot of Chambord to add. CaChing!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, off to a great startOverall, really great, especially for just opening. Live Greek music is fun. Beautiful space, though a bit loud as it is one large open space. Food was mostly excellent - appetizers (that pita bread!!!), chicken souvlaki, and wine list stood out and I will return for these. Had one green salad that we didn't care for (had a lot of salt on top, and little flavor). One person in our party had a seafood dish that was rather plain as well. Service gets 5 stars, we were particularly impressed with menu knowledge and timeliness for a new place still working out some kinks. In total, Kipos was a unique experience with some very delicious food, and we will be returning.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMGreek wines that are actuallyGreek wines that are actually palatable! The manager/Somalier can direct you to a good choice of the many listed. Free wine tasting during the week!
The food was amazing and love all the spices. Have to try the octopus! - i know, but seriously it is the best i've had since Spain trip many years ago.
The daily fresh fish was caught fresh that morning and flown in and they locally source as much as they can i hear.
Wish there were more gluten free options, but there are may things on the menu that i can eat.3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMSurprises even the purist of GreeksJust left from one of the most original brunch I have ever had. An amazing array of fresh traditional greek dishes and favors served up in a way that would surprise even the purest of Greeks...3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMCH FOOD and WINE SNOB: 5 StarsA REAL, professional, sophisticated restaurant in our little burg!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Negative: We had 7:00pmThe Negative:
We had 7:00pm reservations on Saturday and were seated at 7:45pm. Seating at the bar to wait for your table is impossible. The bar is a high traffic area for servers, so you will get bumped and tossed around.
The positive:
The food is excellent! Portions and prices are great. My recommendations would be the Fisherman's stew, the Greek salad and of course the Spanakopita is outstanding!
I will definitely be back, just not on Saturday night.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMFinally, there's an authenticFinally, there's an authentic Greek restaurant in the Durham-Chapel Hill area! Thank you, George Bakatsias! Just two weeks after it opened, this restaurant was full with multiple seatings. Well trained wait staff really knew the food and could explain it. Olga's spanakotiropita is a delicious start, and the galaktoboureko dessert is to die for!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Greek Gods dine in Chapel Hill! The Greek Gods have built a new home in Chapel Hill to worship the power of 300 year old traditions in food! My third time and it continues to be off the charts.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMThe interiors are nicely doneThe interiors are nicely done and they provide a wonderful atmosphere. The service was also wonderful, except we could not understand our server because of the noise level.
The food was great, and priced right. We loved all of the appetizers, especially the Calamari, the Cheese Pie, and the Spinach Balls. The Shrimp & Scallop w Orzo Entree had perfectly cooked seafood, but they used way too much tomato in the sauce. We could not taste the Saffron and Orange oil that was promised in the menu. I am not a tomato sauce person, and tomatoes were not mentioned in the description. We will come back often. Great New addition to Franklin Street.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMLegendary Greek Experience! This will soon become legendary a landmark in Chapel Hill. You have to try it out. The best greek you will ever have. I had trouble not liking anything I tried. Giorgios, thank you for this amazing place!3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMGrecian HeavenI have high standards when it comes to Greek cuisine, and I have been disappointed several times in past. I shouldn't have been nervous. Kipos exceeded my expectations.
The atmosphere was electric, with live music and the occasional appearance of a fabulous belly-dancer. The rather dark and drab decor of Penag was replaced by a fresh and vibrant interior. The Ouzo was outstanding, the saganaki and tzatziki were perfect, and the baklava was the best I've had. The chef and owner were in top form. Overall the evening was one of the best I have had dining out. The only disappointment was a rather plain entree. Fair warning, most of the food is strongly flavored and on the salty side, but if you love bold flavors Kipos is for you!3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent authentic GreekExcellent authentic Greek food like my Yiayia (Greek grandmother) used to make. Chef/owner George Bakatsias at his best! The octopus special was absolutely delicious - hope they make it a regular on the menu.3/13/2013 12:00:00 AMÜber traditional Mediterranean!Über traditional Mediterranean makes its way to Chapel Hill, finally3/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
