A word from Kipos Greek Taverna
Kipos means garden in Greek. It’s a taverna, where friends and strangers gather every day to share thoughts, a glass of wine or two, raki, beer, and often Ouzo. Mezedes (small plates) coming to your table, keep the conversation going.

Kipos is a reflection of my childhood: fresh and robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old and modern recipes alike. Kalos Orisate (welcome) to our home.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We had a really nice meal. Food was excellent. Some in our group had small plates; others entrees and all were good. The special salad was fantastic!!! Thanks."

  • "Another delicious meal with family and friends... not our first or last time."

  • "I have been to this restaurant several times now, and each time I have loved the experience. The food is phenomenal and the service is excellent."

  • "It was far too loud, even for some members of our party who are hard of hearing! We could not hear the person next to us and the waitress had to almost scream. The food was average - good but not outstanding. Not a reason for us to travel from Durham to CH."

  • "Kipos is a real gem. Authentic Greek spoken in words and food. Has become my favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill for family, business and luncheons. A Greek version of Parazade in Durham."

  • "We had a very nice evening celebrating our anniversary. The menu is excellent. We ordered from the small plates section. I would have given the food 5 stars but, the lamb rib lets were much too fatty and the Baclava we had for dessert had too much clove and was dry. The restaurant was quite noisy (we were still able to have conversation at our table) so if your looking for a quiet dinner this is not the place. Loved when a group of dinners got up and started dancing through the restaurant. We will defiantly be back!"

  • "You should be able to dine and talk to the other members of you party. While the restaurant is beautifully designed and the menu is varied and well executed shouting to everyone and still not being heard is not my idea of a good time. I feel I left with damage to my hearing. I had only dined at Kipos on a Sunday before and it was much quieter and pleasant. If I go I will only go on a Sunday. It was also freezing inside so bring a sweater. I recommend the vegetable stack as an appetizer and the salmon was fabulous. The walnut cake with yogurt icing is also wonderful as is the chocolate mouse."

  • "All was great. Nice table in quiet corner. Think it helped that we made a reservation and came early. Wait staff very nice. Food delicious. Nice sized portions of small plates. Totally enjoyed our evening with friends. Would like to come back when the weather is nicer for sitting outside."

  • "Great food, service, atmosphere. a congenial place to spend a few hours, especially during a wet weekend in Chapel Hill."

  • "Very good Greek food! But don't ask for sweet tea. It's not Greek!"

  • "This was not my first time dining at Kipos and certainly won't be my last. It has become a popular choice in Chapel Hill and deservedly so. The food is consistently good and authentically Greek. The wine list is quite interesting, with a good selection Greek wines. Although it can be somewhat noisy on the inside, if one eats outside, it is very pleasant. The drawback: The service is erratic. There seems to be a lot of turnover in the wait staff and it shows. At our most recent visit, a daily special was described as pork chops, which I ordered. They were spare ribs. They were good, but not what I had in mind. Kipos is quite good now. If they can solve the service and noise issues, it will really be something special."

  • "Love it love it love it .... The food is truly excellent. Salmon, fish stew, Xoriatiki.... awesome!! Well staffed (despite summer turn-over). Owners and management tremendously committed and compassionate. I go so often that I'll add it would be nice to have occasional variety in the menu ... but that's true for any restaurant. One other comment ... if there were any way to carve out a few more quiet Sections, it would be tremendous - I know many who choose not to go b/c of the noise level. Of course, there are as many who go for that very reason as well -- its so frenetic and fun! -- . However, if they could accomplish both, they'd have a gold mine beyond what they have today."

  • "This is the second time we have been to Kipos. The food is very good. Each time we try something new. The only negative is that when the restaurant is busy the noise level is uncomfortable and you have to speak very loudly to be heard. The service is alittle spotty when busy. But, we would go back."

  • "Music with dancing and very festive vibe on the inside. Outside seating was a little quieter to allow for conversations and view of Franklin Street."

  • "Really enjoyed the love music and dancing. We got up and danced with other people in the restaurant. Such good food and I have good allergies and they had such a good selection"

  • "The food and service was good but conversation was completely impossible... and I have no hearing problems. The music is nice but the acoustics are horrendous. Not a good place to take a date if you want to talk or meet with friends to catch up. Jut eat in relative silence. It would seem to be an easy thing to install some noise-absorbing fabric that would harmonize well with the attractive interior. I don't know how the wait staff ever get an order right, how can they hear what the customers are saying?"

  • "Being from the Detroit metro area, I miss Greek and other Mediterranean food! I was happy to find Kipos. The restaurant is airy and pleasant with a rustic look too. I had the saganaki which was very good, but I missed the flames and the waiter saying Opa! Really missed that. My baked eggplant was excellent. My husband had the trout, which he said was bland and thought maybe the fish was frozen not fresh. He also doesn't like beans and there were a lot of them. His lamb appetizer was fantastic. The service was excellent. We will definitely come back and stay for music and entertainment."

  • "Everything about Kipos is worth rating excellent. The ambiance inside and out is lively authentic Greek with beautiful light fixtures and comfortable tables. The food (we shared the mezzo dips, grilled octopus and one of the salads) and all were of the same quality and delicious. For mains we had two of the specials (salmon and short rib), the rotisserie pork and the naked chicken. Though all were fresh and delicious the real standout was the pork. Breads and desserts are baked on the premises and available to buy to bring home. The night I was there also featured live music and belly dancing. All of us agreed that every detail and morsel of food was worthy of praise. I will definitely return - soon!"

  • "The food was great. I had lamb chop appetizer, watermelon white wine drink specials, beet salad, a trout special and dessert cookies with coffee. All were delicious! Really delicious. Georgio has designed another absolutely beautiful restaurant. From the lighting to the seating to all of the finishing touches - gorgeous! There was a musician playing beautiful music. I don't have the first complaint. His restaurants make you want to spend time. They make you feel good while you eat. Check it out, because it was sparsely populated and I would love to have it around for a long time to come. It's definitely the best food in that location since Pyewacket in the 90s...by far."

  • "Good overall but my sponekopedtia (sp) was dry. Nice place to meet friends with friendly atmosphere."

  • "We felt transported to Greece as we savored the flavors of our appetizers which included marinated sausage in a lovely clay-fired bowl and a frisee and fennel salad, artfully arranged and seasoned with a delicious dressing. We chose entrees of lamb and salmon. Both dishes tasted special, each bearing the scents and spices of the Mediterranean coast. Service was attentive, professional and warm. In all, it was a perfect Greek evening."

  • "Food was incredible. I had the fisherman's stew and wish I could have it again right now. I better stop writing about it now, because just thinking about it makes me really hungry and angry that I can't have it today for lunch."

  • "Great experience. Terrific dip samplers. The meatballs are huge. The naked souvlaki chicken goes well with the gigante beans (lovely sauce). Fun ambiance as well."

  • "Food selection is fantastic. You can get everything from small plates to steaks and seafood entrees. Desserts are wonderful as well. And if you like Greek wines, this is the place to find a large selection. I will definitely be back!"

  • "I love Greek food and everything I got (eggplant dip with pita and spinach pie) was under seasoned (bland) and the spinach pie was dry and over cooked. Nice bright location and friendly service. Other places with better food ."

  • "Since I found out about this restaurant a couple of months ago, I haven't stopped coming around. They make amazing dishes, with fresh baked bread brought to the table. For lunch, their grilled octopus salad is a must-have. The octopus is tender and slightly crisp, not chewy at all. It is quite sincerely the best octopus I have ever had, even rivaling any I've had back at my Caribbean home. I would highly recommend coming to Kipo's and indulging in their amazing dishes!"

  • "Kipos has by far the greatest Greek food in the area. It's almost supernaturally good. The people there are very friendly, although on this latest visit my table kept getting passed by without any offers to refill our water or giving us our check when we were finished. Other than that, the visit was terrific."

  • "We have dined a Kipos twice and both times were outstanding. They do everything PERFECTLY!"

  • "The menu delivers everything promised. The feta, arugula, watermelon salad with orange vinaigrette was a brilliant combination. I cannot wait to return. The only problem in Chapel Hill is parking can be a total nightmare. Otherwise an incredible dining experience."

  • "Have been twice for dinner - this was first time for lunch. Menu quite varied and food was well prepared. Two had the chicken souvlaki and the other a special summer salad. Started with a mezze of nava beans, tzatziki and the third a feta combo. All good (but we decided the combo of all 3 was the best!). Had baklava (the size of a piece of pie!) and the chocolate mousse, one with and one without the salt. Two if us worked n the non-salted version and their third devoured the salted one. A good lunch place in a town with not too many of those ..."

  • "I am half Greek, and Olga, the kitchen guru and genius, makes the best lemon-roasted potatoes and baklava in the universe. Excellent cuisine, matched by the heartfelt service. Kipos provides comfort with genuine elan. I had been to Kipos about a month previously and raved about the potatoes. The restaurant manager remembered me and brought as appetizer an order of the potatoes for me and my wife, who was having her first Kipos experience — it is by no means her last. The restaurant manager's son was our waiter, and he was exceptional."

  • "We dined on Saturday at 6:30. The restaurant was crowded but not packed. We were seated at a table for two, among other small tables lining the windows that overlook the street. We ordered starters (SKORDALIA and olives) and mains (MOUSSAKA and XORIATIKI salad). The waiter did not return to the table for at least 20 minutes. After 10 minutes, a "runner" brought only the olives and the salad. At about 20 minutes after starting, the waiter noticed that the other starter and main had not arrived and apologized. Eventually we received the other portions but no Peta bread for the SKORDALIA--we had to ask the waiter to bring it. With the sun shining directly into the window, we were soon baked. The food was OK, but we won't hurry back."

  • "I've been to Greece several times, love the food. This is the best and most Greek-like restaurant in the state...really.....amazing array of menu items, greek wines, a bouzouki player (and a belly dancer once a week)...the decor is mindful of places I ate at in Mykonos, rustic-modern. The owner, who is Greek, and a well known local restaurant owner, brought his sister over from Greece to manage the baking, amazing, and his manager is also from there. Now my favorite restaurant in the town."

  • "The food is sooo delicious...fresh, quality ingredients! I would highly recommend the xoriatiki salad, souvlaki, lamb burger and just about everything on the menu is a can't miss! I've never had feta cheese that is as fabulous as the cheese they serve there! They also have an extensive Greek wine list that complements the food...just ask for help, and they will recommend a great bottle of wine!"

  • "Sitting outside in the perfect weather was great. The service was perfect. The food was very good, but one dish was too salty - i have had that happen here before. Does the chef have taste buds?"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed our dinner here on a Sunday evening of a holiday weekend. The food was very good, albeit a little pricey. The only drawback was the service. Admittedly, we were sat just after a couple of large parties, but the restaurant should have been able to deal with the rush. I still recommend Kipos and plan on going back."
