Kipos means garden in Greek. It’s a taverna, where friends and strangers gather every day to share thoughts, a glass of wine or two, raki, beer, and often Ouzo. Mezedes (small plates) coming to your table, keep the conversation going.

Kipos is a reflection of my childhood: fresh and robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old and modern recipes alike. Kalos Orisate (welcome) to our home.Continued

  • "If you haven't been there, you have to go. Over past 20 years in Chapel Hill, I've eaten out 5 days out of 7. Kipos has been my favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill / Durham since I discovered it about a year ago. Why? The food is always the highest quality (particularly the fish and veggies, for me), fun because its authentic. You can be incredibly healthy (whole fish, veggies), carnivorous, and/or decadent (the Greek pastries - don't look at them when you walk in or you'll blow any diet). The staff, all entertaining and happy, remember their customers. My only genuine regret - love it so much I don't let myself go to other restaurants. They're good, but not great."

  • "Our table felt like the 'after thought table.' It was in a space that shouldn't have contained a table at all. The beet salad appetizer was mediocre with some sort of garlicky, lumpy substance that was actually unpleasant. My guest's roast lamb entree was adequate but not remarkable. My chicken souvlaki was OK. Both were what I'd consider lunch portions and there was nothing special about the presentation. We finished our meals rather quickly which was another indication that they were not very substantial. The best thing about our meal was the wine. The best thing about the restaurant was its energy. It's a busy, noisy place and I'd recommend it for groups rather than for couples wanting a special meal in a less frenetic atmosphere."

  • "....then you will enjoy Kipos. My wife and I met in Greece, and have travelled widely on the islands and mainland. Kipos is as close as we have come (including the "Greek" towns of Chicago, Detroit and Melbourne Australia) to real homestyle Greek cooking. Love it, and our waitress was patient, polite, and non-intrusive."

  • "We started with a cold mezze platter. They brought skordalia instead of tzatziki, but the waiter, on being reminded, quickly brought the tzatziki and left the skordalia. On the whole, the mezze were not as good as at Tallula's in Chapel Hill, but the taramosalata was very good, and the tzatziki was excellent. My main course spanakopita (or as they called it spanakotiropita, because there was lots of feta with the spinach) was ample and tasty, My son ordered the grilled whole trout, which was excellent. The baklava was good but not great, but the galaktobourika was outstanding. Our waiter was attentive but not obtrusive throughout, and the tariff was quite reasonable."

  • "I don't care for Greek food. O,r I thought I didn't ... until I ate Greek food at Kipos in Chapel Hill. Each month, a member of our 4-member group chooses a restaurant to which none of the group has been to before. Rule No. 1: no veto power. As I said, I didn't care for Greek food. Neither does my buddy in the group, but my wife loves it; so does my buddy's wife. This month, it was my wife's turn to choose. Kipos it was, and if you're willing to give Greek food a try, you should, too. We all agreed to order a bunch of appetizers to maximize our Greek experience; a splendid idea. So is Kipos, which accentuates authenticity. Ask for Michelle; she's a delight. After Kipos, my whole notion of Greek food has done a 180. One word: go!"

  • "Eclectic menu that goes well beyond "traditional" (US) Greek restaurants. Trout on the blackboard menu was exquisite, and I assume other fish dishes would be as well prepared and presented. After reading the reviews I assumed pies and pastries made with filo would be great and I was a bit taken back by both that arrived at the table with crusts that required a knife to get a bite. Perhaps it was a one night aberration, so we will try again on our next visit, which is definitely on our agenda. Our waiter was excellent, sufficiently attentive and extremely knowledgeable, and suggested a Greek wine that complemented our meals perfectly; we had no knowledge of Greek wines (other than the resonated wines I remember). This restaurant is a keeper."

  • "Good food, great service, enjoyable atmosphere. Had one appetizer, a sausage, that was overcooked and too tough, and was offered something else "on the house" which was good. Would have preferred to have the original appetizer cooked more appropriately. A belly dancer entertained for one song, unexpected and a nice surprise - nice touch."

  • "Kipos is awesome! I recently went for Saturday night dinner with my four best friends and everyone raved about Kipos both during and after the meal. The food was memorable - the grilled octopus was the best I have had outside of the Mediterranean! It was tender and full of flavor. The Greek salad was extremely fresh, especially the tomatoes, and it was early March! My entree consisted of three of the most delicious lamb chops I have had in years. They were grilled medium rare and to perfection. The server recommended a wonderful Greek Shiraz that complemented the lamb chops perfectly. There was live entertainment (a guitar player and belly dancer) and we enjoyed them thoroughly. The only negative is it was quite loud on a Saturday night."

  • "Visited on a busy Saturday night. Entrees were very slow coming to the table and when they arrived, three of the four entrees were cold. I mean not even tepid--they'd been sitting a long time. Manager was very apologetic and offered to either replace the dishes or remove them from our check, which we appreciated. Friends reported a similar experience with entrees here a few weeks earlier, so maybe this is an entree thing here. In the past we've stuck to the meze and always been very satisfied with both the quality of the food and the service. On a positive note, the one entree that arrived hot--the whole grilled fish--was perfectly done (the side dish, however, was also cold). I love this place and do not relish giving it a bad review. :("

  • "Yes, I mean if you really love Greek Cookery you must try KIPOS! Great appetizers like the Calmari be sure to order a side of Tzadziki for dipping, the entrees from the Seafood Stew to lamb dishes are so delicious and flavorful. Do not forget to order desserts either, the best Baklava with so many nuts, and of my favorite Galaktoboureko, the wonderful baked custard with phyllo and touch of lemon."

  • "We had the grilled octopus, which was a much smaller plate than expected. It was both soggy and much too salty. We also ordered a second appetizer which never arrived. The best thing I could say about the restaurant was the the Fisherman's Stew was pretty good. The service was mediocre, the food not much better. I would consider going back to pick up items from the bakery, but will not likely be dining there again."

  • "Introduced our friends to Kipos - sampled countless dishes, meze style, so everyone could have a taste. The wine chosen was also an excellent choice and accompanied the various appetizers and entrees extremely well. We finished a fantastic evening with the chocolate mousse made with olive oil and sea salt. Delicious! We will likely frequent as the weather warms up and can accommodate outdoor eating."

  • "Kipos had few patrons during lunch and I know why. When we asked if we could get a smaller serving of soup, we were told it came in a larger bowl only. A table of 4-5 men sat down near us, and we had a front row seat at their being offered bread and olive oil (we were not offered any) and small bowls of soup being served to them. When we questioned our waitress, she said they split a bowl. We were never given that option. The pita the chicken souvlaki was on was either stale or over-cooked. "Shredded lettuce" translated into several small, torn pieces of spinach (?). Chicken was OK but lacked the nice marinated, grilled taste I expect in that dish. Lamb Souvlaki should be an option long before pork. Tadziki & Fries were good."

  • "We've eaten here a couple of times. The food is quite good (the grilled octopus app is very good). I just don't love loud restaurants, so I have to be in a particular mood to enjoy Kipos. On some nights there's also live music and a belly dancer adding to the atmosphere. There aren't any cozy booths here. Most seats are exposed to foot traffic."

  • "Nicely designed space with solid service. The noise level gets into the "painfully loud" zone. The menu looks enticing but execution is mediocre at best. The small plates were uninspiring and the lamb special was stringy and unflavorful. The wine list is all-Greek - although I appreciate the opportunity to explore Greek wines, it would have been nice to at least enjoy some diveristy rather than be forced to experiment. I had a Northern Greek blend and it failed."

  • "Kipos is a wonderful restaurant with wonderful food and fine service. But the noise level is so high you literally cannot have a conversation. They really need to put some rugs on the floor and curtains and ceiling cover up to deaden the noise level. I'm all for a vibrant eating experience with lots of people enjoying the experience, but this was deafening. We'll go again--for brunch and lunch, but not for dinner until they make it less noisy."

  • "We were on our way to a tango concert and wanted a casual spot for a light dinner. Kipos is the place for that. they have small plates and wonderful entress...whole grille Branzino, lamb shank, and mountain trout plus the most gigantic beans( large Favas) and everything was delicious. we asked for a quiet table and that request was noted. Lots of lively live music, it was just perfect."

  • "This is a great new restaurant addition to Chapel Hill/Carboro! Food was delicious. Only downside was the food service was a bit slow - the drinks and apps came right out, but we waited more than 1/2 hour for our entree, even though it was not that crowded. All is all it was terrific and would definitely go again."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at Kipos. We ordered specials off the Valentine's Day Menu and were very impressed with everything. The appetizers and salads were also excellent. It was very noisy on Saturday night, they have music and belly dancing which was a lot of fun. But it is rather noisy which makes conversations a bit difficult. We will definitely be back to this restaurant."

  • "If you like an intimate setting this place is not for you; however, we were there on a Saturday night, day after Valentines day, and after a basketball game, so it might be a bit less frenetic and loud on, say, a Wednesday evening. The lamb entrée delicious, the wine list comprehensive. Baklava for dessert was not up to our expectations; hard as a rock and not very tasty. Wait service very good. Pricey in my view. +$100 for 2 people: shared appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 glasses wine, and dessert. This is a hot-spot for trendy folks with deep pockets."

If you are too full to eat dessert, there is a bakery on the way out and you can take the baklava or Greek cookies home for a secret treat later. One of the best restaurants in the triangle."

  • "My husband and I went to Kipos for my birthday dinner. The restaurant is lively and has a great feel. Our server, bread and wine were all amazing. The belly dancer was talented and so much fun to watch. The thing is, the food we had was pretty bland. We ordered an eggplant spread for an appetizer and it was tasteless. We also ordered the octopus and it was much better. Unfortunately when my trout special came it was also very bland. I was surprised. Normally such a lovely place with a great bar and knowledgable staff has better food. I love Greek food, but I will only come here for drinks and possibly baked goods in the future."
