A word from Kipos Greek Taverna
Kipos means garden in Greek. It’s a taverna, where friends and strangers gather every day to share thoughts, a glass of wine or two, raki, beer, and often Ouzo. Mezedes (small plates) coming to your table, keep the conversation going.

Kipos is a reflection of my childhood: fresh and robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old and modern recipes alike. Kalos Orisate (welcome) to our home.

Kipos is a relatively large and vibrant Greek restaurant. Nice ambiance with an energetic noise level (but not disturbing). The food (I had lamb, my wife had beef short ribs. Both were well cooked and tasty. the beef could be eaten with a fork and the lamb was also very tender. My only comment was that I expected lamb roast but got the impression pieces of lamb were taken of the roast and then grilled. Really nice appetizer list. The wine list is notable in that it was all Greek wines. Nevertheless, the bar staff were knowledgeable and could head you in the right direction and Greek wines are very drinkable. Overall, a nice evening out. Recommend making reservations as full and I understand usually is.

Third visit to this great restaurant on West Franklin. Had the snapper. Kipos does great fish. Love the lentil and goat cheese appetizers. Vegetable sides were yummy as usual. I like that the wine list is greek which forces me out of my "comfort zone" and gets me exploring new wines. They generously allow tastes (of wines available by the glass) until you are happy with your selection. On a Tuesday night, noise level was low enough to enjoy conversation. There is outdoor seating which I would probably choose on a busier night. Looking forward to returning again!

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Nipos. All food was excellent, but the grilled lamb chops were superb. House wines were fine, and reasonably priced. Servers were friendly as well as highly competent. Talented musician provided special atmosphere.

Kipo's is my absolute favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill. My husband and I dine there every Friday evening, and I take all my friends there. I recommend it to everyone. The staff seems to remembers me from visit to visit (although that may be because I come so often!). The cookies are wonderful, as is the salad with feta, as is the trout.

Went early before a play on campus and had the place almost to ourselves. Wine specials were half off the bottle. Grilled founder falling off the bone was super tasty. It is remarkable that the wine list is exclusively Greek. No belly dancer this time. Noise not a problem early.

My wife and I have had dinner at Kipos at least a dozen times. We have never been disappointed. The appetizers are great (check out the octopus and the shrimp saganaki) and the main courses are wonderful (check out the fisherman's stew and any lamb dish). The atmosphere is lively and the decor rustic and exciting. George Bakatsias' best so far!

We were not able to eat at Kipos. When we made the reservation, we were not aware that there was a UNC football game that night in Chapel Hill. Since the restaurant has no dedicated parking for its guests, when we arrived at the restaurant, not one parking spot anywhere was available. The restaurant may have valet parking which was not available to us as there was no parking for that, either. In our group of six, one couple traveled from Holly Springs, NC and another from North Raleigh, NC. We have eaten at Kipos in the past and enjoyed the experience, but would think the restaurant needs to consider securing dedicated parking for its guests for situations such as this.

I had only one food item. Enough for lunch, but I would have preferred a sampler platter to have more variety. It was a plain, but tasty rice dish, over-priced for what it was. Vegetarian options limited. Nice to be able to order Greek beer, although one would be better off with an American craft beer. My companion had a lambburger with fries. Looked pretty American (as opposed to Greek). Service was surprisingly prompt. Ambience: there is pleasant outdoor seating; the inside is light and airy. We were seated next to a party, so the noise level was too high for me. The Greek coffee was a nice treat: acidic and very hot, served with a little cookie. Would I go back? Maybe. The Mediterranean deli down the road is a better buy.

We had fabulous service from Mike and enjoyed the delicious red snapper and lamb chops. Salads were savory and just the right size. The Malbec was a perfect pairing. Mike was humorous, hilarious, and knew how to take great care of us. They brought a special dessert in honor of my parents' August birthdays. A wonderful night. The hostess also seated us in a quiet space by a window so we had a great nook to feel a little outside the energy, because it's a busy place. I love that it's a family-owned enterprise, that George's siblings were both there. All the staff greeted us with genuine smiles and kindness when we came in; you can tell when people enjoy working in a place.

We've eaten at Kipos several times now. Last night we had the special whole red snapper for two. I must say it was delicious. It was cooked in their wood grill, which imparted a great smokey flavor. The fish was cooked to perfection. The side items (lemon roasted potatos and greens) were also very good, as was my shrimp appetizer (in tangy sauce with capers and olives). That said, in the past, I ordered a couple of the standard menu items which were okay, but very so-so. I personally prefer a more quiet dining experience, where conversation with my wife and guests is not difficult. Kipos is definitely LOUD and energetic.... which is fine, if that is what the customer's want and fits their business model. Service is slow sometimes.

We had a very nice evening celebrating our anniversary. The menu is excellent. We ordered from the small plates section. I would have given the food 5 stars but, the lamb rib lets were much too fatty and the Baclava we had for dessert had too much clove and was dry. The restaurant was quite noisy (we were still able to have conversation at our table) so if your looking for a quiet dinner this is not the place. Loved when a group of dinners got up and started dancing through the restaurant. We will defiantly be back!

You should be able to dine and talk to the other members of you party. While the restaurant is beautifully designed and the menu is varied and well executed shouting to everyone and still not being heard is not my idea of a good time. I feel I left with damage to my hearing. I had only dined at Kipos on a Sunday before and it was much quieter and pleasant. If I go I will only go on a Sunday. It was also freezing inside so bring a sweater. I recommend the vegetable stack as an appetizer and the salmon was fabulous. The walnut cake with yogurt icing is also wonderful as is the chocolate mouse.

This was not my first time dining at Kipos and certainly won't be my last. It has become a popular choice in Chapel Hill and deservedly so. The food is consistently good and authentically Greek. The wine list is quite interesting, with a good selection Greek wines. Although it can be somewhat noisy on the inside, if one eats outside, it is very pleasant. The drawback: The service is erratic. There seems to be a lot of turnover in the wait staff and it shows. At our most recent visit, a daily special was described as pork chops, which I ordered. They were spare ribs. They were good, but not what I had in mind. Kipos is quite good now. If they can solve the service and noise issues, it will really be something special.

Love it love it love it .... The food is truly excellent. Salmon, fish stew, Xoriatiki.... awesome!! Well staffed (despite summer turn-over). Owners and management tremendously committed and compassionate. I go so often that I'll add it would be nice to have occasional variety in the menu ... but that's true for any restaurant. One other comment ... if there were any way to carve out a few more quiet Sections, it would be tremendous - I know many who choose not to go b/c of the noise level. Of course, there are as many who go for that very reason as well -- its so frenetic and fun! -- . However, if they could accomplish both, they'd have a gold mine beyond what they have today.

This is the second time we have been to Kipos. The food is very good. Each time we try something new. The only negative is that when the restaurant is busy the noise level is uncomfortable and you have to speak very loudly to be heard. The service is alittle spotty when busy. But, we would go back.

The food and service was good but conversation was completely impossible... and I have no hearing problems. The music is nice but the acoustics are horrendous. Not a good place to take a date if you want to talk or meet with friends to catch up. Jut eat in relative silence. It would seem to be an easy thing to install some noise-absorbing fabric that would harmonize well with the attractive interior. I don't know how the wait staff ever get an order right, how can they hear what the customers are saying?

Being from the Detroit metro area, I miss Greek and other Mediterranean food! I was happy to find Kipos. The restaurant is airy and pleasant with a rustic look too. I had the saganaki which was very good, but I missed the flames and the waiter saying Opa! Really missed that. My baked eggplant was excellent. My husband had the trout, which he said was bland and thought maybe the fish was frozen not fresh. He also doesn't like beans and there were a lot of them. His lamb appetizer was fantastic. The service was excellent. We will definitely come back and stay for music and entertainment.

Everything about Kipos is worth rating excellent. The ambiance inside and out is lively authentic Greek with beautiful light fixtures and comfortable tables. The food (we shared the mezzo dips, grilled octopus and one of the salads) and all were of the same quality and delicious. For mains we had two of the specials (salmon and short rib), the rotisserie pork and the naked chicken. Though all were fresh and delicious the real standout was the pork. Breads and desserts are baked on the premises and available to buy to bring home. The night I was there also featured live music and belly dancing. All of us agreed that every detail and morsel of food was worthy of praise. I will definitely return - soon!

Georgio has designed another absolutely beautiful restaurant. From the lighting to the seating to all of the finishing touches - gorgeous! There was a musician playing beautiful music. I don't have the first complaint. His restaurants make you want to spend time. They make you feel good while you eat. Check it out, because it was sparsely populated and I would love to have it around for a long time to come. It's definitely the best food in that location since Pyewacket in the 90s...by far.
