  • "Went to Kinmont for the first time the other night and totally enjoyed it. We had oysters, delicious. We had the whitefish salad, also delicious. Then we had the whole fish, which was delicious too. We didn't order dessert, but our excellent waitress was kind enough to send one over anyway. Our experience was excellent, and look forward to going back."

  • "Stylish ambience, a sincere server and carefully sourced food do not, unfortunately, always add up to a good dining experience. One outstanding dish -- the soft boiled egg with cheesy grits and chicken livers -- could not overcome failings in other courses. For a restaurant that touts it oysters, serving one out of six that is below standard (dry/anemic) is not acceptable. But the real failing was the whole roasted fish. An ill-considered preparation -- topping a whole fish with a mound of dry, underseasoned slaw -- does not make it easy to debone a fish meant for two. Our server's clear lack of experience in serving whole fish left us with plates full of a tepid mixture of bones, fish and slaw. Hit or miss, but mostly miss."

  • "We were so excited to get a reservation at Kinmont, but the experience was just average. While the oysters, Parker rolls, and salad we ordered were very good, our entrees were average and a little disappointing; especially since our server described everything as "excellent" when we asked her opinion. Also, no ambiance here if you get one of the tables seated along the wall that are so close together our server's behind was on our table as she took the order from the table next door. Why do new restaurants insist on bench seating that crams tables within a foot of each other? I wouldn't go back. Too msny other great restaurants. The bar, however, looked cozy. If we had eaten in there., mIght have had a totally different experience."

  • "Decided to try Kinmont for a birthday dinner. The food was great and the service was wonderful. The server was very knowledgeable of the menu and had good recommendations though there was no wow factor that keeps me talking about it. Drinks were so-so but nice wine list."

  • "Our first visit to Kinmont was vry nice, the seafood plate for 2 was wonderful. Then we kept adding other entries, sides. We had a table for 2 and another guest joined us for dinner, wasn't room at our small table, so our wait staff person accommodated us, moved our food, etc. into the nice bar area. Expensive however would go back."

  • "So excited for this place! I live in the area and will definitely be back. Kinmont has it all - great atmosphere, delicious good and amazing service. I mean, who doesn't love a personal thank you note in a cute note pad , a visit from the manager and a follow up phone call the next day to make sure we had a great time? We tried the Arctic Char - it was so good! Apparently the sight of two women trying this whole fish was curious because nearby tables came over to ask if they should get the same. I heard they also have happy hour and can't wait to check it out!"

  • "Wait person was unable to answer most of our questions (at least not accurately as it turned out! ) If you like cream in your coffee be prepared to be served skimmed milk instead. Also ,our request at the time reservation was made (well in advance) for a corner table was not only not honored but completely ignored. Someone from the restaurant called the next day to see if we were pleased but when I conveyed the above it was clear that these concerns were not taken seriously."

  • "Three generations of our family enjoyed Father's Day/Graduation brunch at Kinmont this past Sunday. Surprisingly, each of us (there were 5 in our party) tried a different dish on the menu. No one was disappointed! We loved the ingredients, the inventiveness, and the presentation of each. Kinmont has a way of making comfort food innovative and exciting, while still feeling comfy. We loved the decor and the staff were amazing!"

  • "We recently had an early dinner at Kinmont on a Friday night. Ambiance is very nice and comfortable and our service was impeccable. Some dishes (salmon tartare and Parker house rolls with whipped butter) are absolutely craveable and will be my reason to go back. Others are way small without enough tiny oomph to make them memorable or worth the price (smoked carrots had been raved about, found them just ok. Smoked sable was tiny and pretty bland.) Cocktails are good but a bit pricey. Worth it to check out...just know there are some dishes much better than others."

  • "I had been to Kinmont for dinner before and was very impressed. Brunch was no different! My sister and I shared a few things: Kinmont Bagel & Lox, Egg white frittata, and Banana Bread French Toast. All of them were wonderful but the frittata was by far my favorite. It was so light and fresh. The bagel & lox was good but it had a little too much dill on it for my taste. The french toast was very tasty, but I have a preference for the savory over the sweet. My favorite drink was the Pimm's Cup. If you like cucumber, definitely get this drink!"

  • "Love the interior brick look. Knowledgeable wait staff and affable. They have a soft shell crab sandwich that i asked to convert to a dinner portion. Thinking that everywhere I have such the crab is usually quite thin in size. Requesting three I was quite surprised of the colossal size of the crabs...dinosaurs but tender as any other. thought the beer selection was more than adequate. On my list to return on my next visit to Chicago"

  • "I can't think of anything to say about Kinmont other than it was okay. Hearing the buzz about this place, we were really excited but the experience and most certainly the food was...okay. Not much flavor to anything, the crab leg portion size was insultingly pathetic and our waiter did not wow us at all. The cocktails were good as was the bread...but if if the bread is the best part of the meal, something is seriously lacking."

  • "We live down the street so find it to be a nice addition to the few places we can walk to in River North, west of Orleans. We started with the simple salad which was a perfect refreshing start, and not a typical house salad you'd find at a steak restaurant. We had the halibut and mushrooms with Farro for our entree. The mushrooms were served cold which was surprising, but we got over it quickly. Everything was very tasty and fresh. We'll be happy to walk back there again soon. "

  • "Made the reservation a week in advance. Was psyched for the smoked trout reuben on the menu! Checked the menu on OT and restaurant website a few times and it was still there! The entrance to the restaurant was not inviting, actually looked like it was closed and the RIGHT door was locked and left door stuck?? Outdoor sidewalk space looked abandoned. No reuben on the menu, was told menu changes daily but they don't update their website, with today's technology?? The salmon special was 4oz or less, overcooked and served solo, was more of an appetizer than an entree. Cocktail was a very stingy pour. Pan roasted muscles were among the best I've ever had, broth was delicious and toast excellent! "

  • "Very UN-impressive. We've been trying a new restaurant every month going on six years, and Kinmont is toward the bottom of the list. The service was good, but the food was nothing special. How it got to be "one of the top ten restaurants" in Chicago Magazine is beyond us. They must have been desperate to come up with a tenth choice."

  • "we had a wonderful experience at kinmont. very refreshing to have a dinner that was simple in the preparation and complex in the flavor. the trout was outstanding and the sides of beets and mushrooms were a perfect addition. julie our server was knowledgeable, attentive and very fun. we had a good time with her. andy was so helpful with a very special request i made....he called to confirm he understood and the request was executed perfectly. the reservation confirmation call was expected but the call the next day to check on our evening was not expected...and a nice touch. one negative...we sat on the banquette and the arctic blast from the AC above us was not fun!!!"

  • "Took a friend there for her birthday. We called because we were running late, and the hostess was very gracious. The restaurant is quite dark and had more of a winter feel to it. The scallop crudo I had was fresh and light, and the halibut was well-prepared and flavorful. My friends vegetarian dish was pretty good, the brussel sprouts could have used more roasting, and the mushrooms were great. Location is a little out of the way, but we found a cab after dinner without much of an issue. I'd go again, but probably when the cold weather returns!"

  • "The service was great. Read another review which complained about tables being too close to each other but didn't find that to be true. Biggest problem was that a fish restaurant needs to know how to prepare fish flawlessly, and this one doesn't. Starters, including crudo, were wonderful. But my salmon entrée was overdone and dry. Very disappointing...."

  • "I work around the corner from this location and during my walk to work, I've watched the incremental improvements on the location. I was super excited to have my birthday dinner here. Long and short, it took nearly 30 minutes to order my simple salad so decided against anything more. The simple salad was delicious and fresh and the dressing was incredible. The staff, aside from the bartender, were all very friendly and accommodating, particularly the gentleman with the labret piercing who helped me when the bartender didn't. Someone who I can only identify as probably a manager was chatting with a customer and the bartender, at the expense of their customers. "

  • "I made the reservation about 2 months ago for Kinmont for my birthday because I am an avid seafood lover! I was very impressed by their ability to meet our request of a specific table. Once we arrived, we were sat and greeted by a very friendly server. He gave great advice on what to order and recommendations. We also had the manager stop by, Greg, to check on us. He was so outgoing and it was really a nice thing to have the manager stop by and check on us. In addition to the amazing food (walleye for me, salmon for my sig other), they also worked with my boyfriend before hand to select a dessert for a birthday surprise - the timing was perfect and the staff was outstanding. I have never been to a place here in Chicago like it! "

  • "Terrific! The decor is rustic chic, warm and welcoming. Ordered a beautiful bottle of Rose that paired nicely with our entire meal. We started with two appetizers, the Salmon Tartare was light, fresh and bursting with flavor in every perfect bite. The pickled mustard seed in the tartare popped in your mouth and was delightful. The King Crab Gratin was creamy, rich and is a crab dip on steroids, delish. Our entree was a 3lb Arctic Char that is meant to be shared and the special of the evening. It was served as a whole fish with a warm potato salad in a warm bacon vinaigrette. The vinaigrette had just the right amount of acid to cut through the richness of the perfectly cooked Arctic Char. No doubt I will be back again and again. So happy!"

  • "From the start we could tell this was not going to go well! One of the bartenders acted like we were invisible and he was doing us a favor by serving us. Then we sat only to find out that they were out of all shellfish which was the reason we came. I will say that the manager went overboard trying to save the night. The appetizers were great. The entrees were underwhelming but desserts were very good. It was difficult to tell what they were trying to pull of here!"
