A word from King + Duke
At King and Duke, we showcase locally sourced ingredients through simple, yet focused hearth cooking. Our goal is not to manipulate food, but to accentuate the natural flavors of our products through slower methods of cooking and the smoke of the wood fire. Through this primitive technique, constantly moving and manipulating the live fire, we invest exacting attention to the preparation of each and every dish.

Our managing partner, Ford Fry, named the restaurant after two characters in Huckleberry Finn, “The King” and “The Duke," a pair of grifters who ‘put on airs’ and pretended to be royalty, when in fact they were a couple of hillbillies who lived in the woods. With our slightly mischievous ways ☺, a huge focus on quality, yet a primitive cooking style and down-to earth atmosphere, Chef Fry felt like it was the perfect name for our newest restaurant.

  • "I dined here with two other people on a Wednesday evening. The restaurant was pretty busy by 7pm and fully packed (including the bar) by 8:30pm. We ordered the meat platter for 4 people and it was amazing! Since there were only three of us, we had leftovers, but it really is perfevtly poetiones for four. I would recommend any group to order this dish!"

  • "The servers are knowledgeable and well trained. They make the whole dining experience efficient and enjoyable. I like the "Huck Finn meet Buckhead" vibe that carries from the campfire inspired menu to the understated, but sophisticated decor. Although I found octopus to be an unusual menu option, the stuffed trout is a favorite, and it's just fun to see Mississippi Rabbit on a menu. The carrot and beet salad was an explosion of color and flavor. The smoked fish starter included thin strips of vibrant root vegetables, simply dressed. Cocktails and wine list are creative: worth a read and several sips. In the evening there sometimes is a wait, even with a reservation, and a slightly noisy, not unpleasant hustle throughout the experience."

  • "Have been waiting to go here for a time and will wait again before going back. Great atmosphere and service, but food left a lot to be desired. The famous burger ordered medium rare was medium well, dry and lacking flavor. Way too much bun as well. The bun was even dry under the burger, no juices. we were under a time constraint and this burger is really thick so didn't have time to wait for a replacement. Polenta was cold. One in party had fish of the day and commented it was very average. Drinks were good, excellent Manhattan. Cured meat appetizer OK but pricy. Brownie dessert as well as other chocolate special nothing special. After expecting something special was disappointed in the food."

  • "The place overall is awesome. I walked in right at 9:44 and had reservations at 9:45 and sat down within 3 min. I was very excited about coming here, the bar was a little over crowded but thats a good sign, nobody wants to eat somewhere where there is no people waiting. Long story short the place is great, the food was even greater and the service, for us (me and my girlfriend), was perfect."

  • "You would expect this "hot spot" to offer the latest in fashionable dining. Based on our meal, spring has not only not yet arrived, the restaurant is still mired in winter root vegetable blues. Our party enjoyed the ambiance, had excellent service and had an overall good experience. But the variety and quantity of the food wasn't up to expectations. We shared a Virginia Sea Bass entree the size of two marshmallows. The vegetables were the same as those on our appetizers, without a hint of green. The smoked fish dip was delicious as were the corn muffins. Everything was managed well, and the place was packed. But for the money, we should have had more food on the plate, with a little more variety."

  • "I made a reservation for 4 of us to have dinner on a Thursday night. Two of our party were co-workers from California, so I wanted to show them a great experience in the South. This was the first time for all of us to eat here and there was a lot of anticipation! Despite the reservation, we waited several minutes before being led upstairs to our table (which I understand). But honestly we were all quite disappointed that our table was large round 6 (or 8?) top right by the stairs and in the walkway of every customer and server, which really did hurt the intimacy of our dinner. The good? Our server, Chris, was incredible - very knowledgeable and personable, and the food was amazing. I had the Artic Char special and l ate every last drop!"

  • "JCT Kitchen, another one of Ford Fry's restaurants, is our favorite place to eat in ATL so we were really excited to try King + Duke. The outside bar and patio was very comfortable (I would go back and just get the Bites from the bar and drinks). Once we were seated, the waiter came by to pour us drinks but did not greet us. Although he was not unpleasant, he was not friendly or helpful with the menu questions. I got the bass which was very dry with little flavor and the spring vegetables were uncooked and cold. My fiance got the bar steak and frites, the steak was extremely tough. The fries were probably the best thing we had all night. Needless to say, we did not get dessert. Overall a disappointment food wise."

If you dine and hang in Buckhead, this is a great place to put on regular rotation. If you live outside Buckhead, I'm not sure it's worth the trip. In town restaurants like ESS, Miller-Union, even Fry's other locations, offer same, if not even better, of both food and drink. Pricing consistent with Buckhead crowd expectations."

  • "I only had two issues: one, the main course came out too fast; they need to let you rest a bit between courses. second, the tables are much too close together, especially upstairs. You can't hear yourself talk due to the conversations of others; it's also very hard to get up to go to the bathroom or elsewhere without disturbing the table next to you."

Our waiter was friendly and engaging, and knowledgeable about the menu. They have a private dining room which is excellent if you have a group. The room is very private and quiet and appropriate for business dinner or birthday dinner, etc."

  • "Used to live in Atlanta and was trying to find a new and notable place. After seeing reviews, decided to give it a shot. Had a really great experience here. Service was excellent. Always there without being intrusive. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great atmosphere - casual and warm. Great first date option. Food was also very good. Enjoyed the pork roast with sweet potatoes. Although simple, the bread and cheese bites were delicious. Who knew toasted bread and cheese could be so delicious? Lastly must not forget the amazing sticky toffee pudding. I'd go back just for that!"

  • "We have dined at King & Duke several times while in Atlanta visiting our daughter. Usually we have a wonderful experience, but not so much this last time. Our waitress was not overly attentive. She brought us the wrong bottle of wine, said the name of the one we ordered, and started to open the wrong bottle. Not a good start to the evening. We love the executive chef Joe Schafer, who has actually visited with us every time we've been in. However, being a Sunday, it was his (much deserved) night off. Love the food, love the atmosphere. Just did not love the service on this particular Sunday night. (3/9/13)"
