A word from King + Duke
At King and Duke, we showcase locally sourced ingredients through simple, yet focused hearth cooking. Our goal is not to manipulate food, but to accentuate the natural flavors of our products through slower methods of cooking and the smoke of the wood fire. Through this primitive technique, constantly moving and manipulating the live fire, we invest exacting attention to the preparation of each and every dish.

Our managing partner, Ford Fry, named the restaurant after two characters in Huckleberry Finn, “The King” and “The Duke," a pair of grifters who ‘put on airs’ and pretended to be royalty, when in fact they were a couple of hillbillies who lived in the woods. With our slightly mischievous ways ☺, a huge focus on quality, yet a primitive cooking style and down-to earth atmosphere, Chef Fry felt like it was the perfect name for our newest restaurant.

Went for the 1st time for brunch - maybe not the best way to judge a restaurant. Starter breads, especially donuts, were over-the-top-too-sweet. Beet/carrot/feta dish was delicious, as was a perfect piece of fish (corvina), and eggs en cocotte, but the home fries with the fish were literally burnt to a crisp, and when I pointed those out to the server there was no awareness that there was anything wrong with that and no offer to replace them, nor was there an offer to do anything after-the-fact when I made the same comment on the way out. Server also did not know the food well (those are yeast-raised donuts, not cake donuts!). Overall, there were good things on the menu, and clearly some talent in the kitchen, but the experience was uneven

Took my husband out for his birthday. When I called to adjust the reservation, the hostess, who was supremely nice, suggested the chef's table. Best decision ever! Incredible experience and most amazing food and flavors I've experienced out in a long time. Really unique cocktails as well. The entire night was an experience. Our waiter Danny and the chefs were all great hosts!! Gave us so much appreciation for their skills! I too one star off on service because of one cocktail waitress outside who was in attentive and not super friendly until we went to pay. She could use a little more training!

The restaurant is great looking (nice open kitchen and outdoor bar/lounge) with the added bonus of the lovely open kitchen (plus chef's table) sporting huge wood-fire hearth. The food is hit and miss. The appetizers (fritto misto and steak tartar) and the side (smoke box cornbread with ham and jalapeno butter) were great but the titular steak aka The King was okay at best. It was under-seasoned. Bone's, Kevin Rathbun Steak, Chops, and BLT Steak all have much better steaks.

I tried King + Duke because of the picture of the giant steak served with the split marrow bone, the marrow grilled to crispy perfection over a wood fire. The steak was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and flavorful. But for $87, it should have fed itself to me. Bone marrow? Not as good as it looks in the picture... or as good as it looked on Life Below Zero... just not good. The hosts were friendly and gracious and the service was adequate. The location is great, tucked away in a little Buckhead courtyard. Even with all of that... somehow, for some intangible reason, it just didn't feel worth it. It could be an economic perspective. If dropping $250 on dinner for two (and we split one King) is "casual" for you, then maybe you'll like it.

I asked the server about the wood roasted seafood and he said "well, the description speaks for itself..." The fish was so bland I would not call it wood roasted... It tasted poached. The description which was supposed to speak for itself had me imagining it was a dry, earthy roast of seafood. It was not. It was more like a stew. My husband ordered the 8 oz sirloin, medium. Came out almost purple. Server never asked how it was and when at the end of the meal 4 or more raw pieces remained on the plate, he just said "can I take that?" and whisked it away. Didn't wonder why over half the meal was uneaten... Didn't ask "do you want to take the rest home (and perhaps finish cooking it?)" The servers need to be more astute than that.

Ah, King + Duke. The hits just keep on coming. Love the vibe of this place so much, with its masculine yet refined dining room and those fires blazing behind the kitchen. Food was excellent - the rabbit was the best I've had in recent memory. Lamb belly and marrow apps are fantastic! Service here always feels as warm as those raging fires too. Excellent!

We began the meal with perfectly tender octopus with delicious soffrito and tender lamb belly flatbread. However, the meal went downhill from there ... our entrees and sides arrived 45-60 minutes after we finished the starters; and once they arrived, most of the items that were intended to be hot we're actually cold ... pork, gnocchi, charred leaks were all cold. Cornbread arrived a bit later and was warm, but was slightly burnt. Additionally, the gnocchi (which is touted as one of their most popular dishes) was tasteless. Thankfully, the staff members were all kind, accommodating and apologetic. I've read that the exec chef resigned a couple of weeks ago ... this could be impacting things there.

We had dinner once again with friends from out of town, and had been raving about King + Duke. To our shock and disappointment, we learned that Chef Joe is no longer there. There was an obvious difference in the food and menu selections. We had always loved and looked forward to the Octopus and again, raved about how great this dish was. It was carefully and beautifully charred, with potatoes and some other that made it a knock-out. We knew instantly once we saw the word "Soffritto" we knew it was a gone-er. It was terrible. A obvious influence by an Italian chef working out the damage control. Pitiful in our opinion. On the brighter side, the steak tartar was as outstanding as always. We are concerned for the future of King and Duke.

I have been to this restaurant several times and every time I have absolutely loved it. The selection, menu, ambiance, service, and overall experience is outstanding. The prices for what you get are pretty good for a fine dining establishment by Ford Fry. The cocktails don't disappoint. The menu berries frequently so even if you go a lot there's always something new to try. The octopus appetizer is divine. So are all of the meets.

Like all Ford Fry's restaurants, the menu is very same-y. Farm to table is great, but only if you do something inspired, which isn't happening here. This restaurant is fine. That's it. It's expensive, the food is just ok, the service trying a little too hard and it looks a little like a lodge in Colorado. This is, by far, his least attractive restaurant so if you're going because his restaurants are the best designed in Atlanta and he's on the bleeding edge of restaurant design (which I think is true), hop over to St Cecelia instead, where the food is better and the ambiance FAR more interesting.

We are not a fan of the menu change to large entree and a la carte sides. The Rabbit (1/2) order and the swordfish steak (about 14 ounces) were too large and not appetizing. The sides were appropriate is size but were not flavorful. The beef tartar remain excellent

My wife and I were expecting greatness based on the reviews from GQ, what we experienced was only good. The menu is unique and has something for everyone, however the dishes missed the mark for my wife and I. For example, the pork chop had plenty of flavor, along with plenty of fat unfortunately. The setting was ideal in curtains places within the restaurant, we moved three times to find it, which is a plus in their willingness to accommodate. Nevertheless, we had to move, either because we were place so close to others that we could touch elbows, or the speaker directly above required a mega phone to communicate, slight exaggeration but you get the point. Not great, good food, up beat atmosphere, close encounters.

Took my wife their for her birthday along with my son and daughter in law, they had eaten there before and recommended it. At first glance great scene, open fire pit for cooking etc. First indicator was Friday night and the only real activity is at the bar. Overall the wait staff are great, we were disappointed with the meal and if you order the chicken be aware it will come out with the foot still attached. My son ordered the bone in strip and it was average at best. I wanted trout but found they switch it for Pogy, majority of the meal was ok, but just not what was expected. This place has great potential, but for the price they are going to have to bring more to the table.

The quality and originality of the menu, execution, and end results has always been a strong point of K&D. The food in all sections was first rate! The dishes are original and/or interesting variations of go-to local and regional selections. the Tomato & Fried Egg Plant appetizer was the star of the show this trip, and that's saying something for this quality. An above average wine list that is reasonably priced in most cases, but ask for the larger "book" list with more selections. The back of the menu list is capable, but more interesting selections from the larger list. Cool room and patio. Bar service and response times have been slow in all our visits, this being no exception. Service was harried and absent minded this trip.

I've heard great things about King + Duke and it lives up to the hype! Everything from start to finish was top notch (I work in a fine dining restaurant so I'm critical). To start, the bar staff was knowledgeable and made a great cocktail. The hostess was very friendly and welcoming in getting us seated. Ask for Chris W, he's a great server (so much so, I wanted to steal him and take him to my restaurant)! He made great recommendations that were thoroughly enjoyed by our group (never made us feel rushed but service didn't linger). I HIGHLY recommend the pork and shallots (probably my favorite pork dish to date)! ALL the staff thanked us on our way out (great ending). This is certainly my favorite Ford Fry concept to date. We'll be back!

Our waitress was very personable and extremely well-versed regarding the menu. Our entrees (salmon and grouper) were very good including the fried okra side that we ordered as well. Unfortunately though, despite having called the restaurant earlier in the day to arrange for a candle to be added to the dessert in celebration of my date's birthday, the message never got through to the waitress. However, I mentioned this to the front desk when using the restroom and the outdoor bartender overheard my complaint and offered to make-up for their miss. His concern was impressive initially, but as importantly his special touch with a lit candle along with an after dinner drink for both of us was superb attention to detail!

Four of us (from NY) ate in the outdoor space. Perfect. The popovers were wonderful. Salmon, pork chop, burger with fries, all excellent. And while the service was professional, they get a de-merit for starting to remove dishes while two of us were still eating. That's a no-no for a high-end restaurant, especially since, on an early Sunday evening, the place was less then half full.

From the moment I walked into the restaurant, I was warmly received and immediately greeted. 9:30pm reservations for two people was easily obtained even for a Friday night. The bar area was lively and had a positive upbeat energy. We were seated upstairs in a room full of ambience and energy. The service was above par and all servers were polite, friendly and helpful in choosing drinks and food. We ordered the onion soup & bone marrow; octopus; lamb belly; grilled veggies; and the 90 day aged steak. All I can say is everything was tasty! Loved the steak! Afterwards we got the choc Chip cookie. Yum! Special thanks to Danny Fraga and the SA Alex Goodkowski for EXCELLENT service!
