A word from King + Duke
At King and Duke, we showcase locally sourced ingredients through simple, yet focused hearth cooking. Our goal is not to manipulate food, but to accentuate the natural flavors of our products through slower methods of cooking and the smoke of the wood fire. Through this primitive technique, constantly moving and manipulating the live fire, we invest exacting attention to the preparation of each and every dish.

Our managing partner, Ford Fry, named the restaurant after two characters in Huckleberry Finn, “The King” and “The Duke," a pair of grifters who ‘put on airs’ and pretended to be royalty, when in fact they were a couple of hillbillies who lived in the woods. With our slightly mischievous ways ☺, a huge focus on quality, yet a primitive cooking style and down-to earth atmosphere, Chef Fry felt like it was the perfect name for our newest restaurant.

Diner Reviews
  • "We've been going to King + Duke since they've opened and to this day, have not been disappointed. Food and service has always been perfect since we've been going and believe me...I don't fool around with my food. I will say that at times during the winter months, it is a bit hard for me to choose from the menu, as I am a very healthy eater, and so much is meat and bones. To that point, during the summer months, Chef Joe offers the most incredible Steak Tartare, best in the city. We love the roasted beets and carrots, always a favorite, and the octopus is to die for. The arctic char is also fantastic, light and healthy. Skip the pickle jar. Overall, a food lover's dream and an awesome see and be seen kind of place."

  • "First visit to King & Duke- Ford Fry has another winner. The starters although very small portions were top quality, in particular the grilled octopus. For entree my group of 3 decided on the communal mixed grill, which showcased their skill with the wood-burning oven. What a feast! In contrast to the small starters, this dish was huge and could easily feed 5. Included this night was steak, chicken, sausage, salmon and great grouper collars, along with all the sides to complement the meats. Everything was perfectly cooked and had an incredible smoky flavor I wish I could replicate at home. Lastly, our server was absolutely the best I have had in a long while. Here you get the entire package of great food & service."

  • "A colleague and I had liuch here. I had the shrimp salad which was prefect - butter lettuce and mixed herbs (dill, tarragon and parsley) perfectly dressed with a dusting of breadcrumbs and loaded with shrimp. My colleague had the soup of the day - turnip - cream based and delicious and the adult "grilled cheese" which was tasty and cooked perfectly. The dessert - buttermilk blackberry pie was one of the best desserts I have had in Atlanta - a perfect shortbread pastry crust - ice cold ice cream with a cloud of whipped cream with a hint of blackberries - surrounded by lemon curd and lots of blackberries. Worth coming for! Service was attentive but not overbearing. Servers familiar with food sources."

  • "The menu has a distinct Southern flair, but the items are inventive and very diverse. One of the best restaurants I've attended. Excellent dinner!"

  • "Great spot for an inspired dinner. Everything on the menu looked delicious, salmon and snapper did not disappoint. Grilled peaches & blue cheese were amazing! There was a bit of a bar crowd at the inside the bar and out on the bar patio. Nothing crazy for Buckhead, just added to a bit of noise. All in all worth the price and good service, we will be back again for sure."

  • "2 girlfriends and I went for a birthday dinner Sunday evening. Everything was wonderful! As soon as I walked in the hostess was so sweet and even offered to hold the birthday present behind the desk! We decided to have a beverage at the bar, and they didn't mind holding a table for us, and did not make us feel rushed. Our waiter, Mark, was fabulous and knowledgeable. You could tell he really cared about the menu and he made great recommendations. The food was delicious and the cocktails were excellent. Save room for the awesome desserts (hello Oreo skillet cake!) and Irish Coffee. This place never disappoints!"

  • "We ordered two signature dishes. The King and DUCK “A LA PRESSE”. The King was ordered to be delivered medium rare and was delivered well. The Duck “A La Presse” was also over cooked. The total meal was $373.00 for three people. All in the party felt the food was less than par and would not likely to return. The food was very disappointing considering we order two signature dishes and received both over cooked."

  • "My wife and I booked through open table for lunch. We were seated on time. Then had one of the worst service experiences we have ever had. No one came to give us water or take a drink order for 10 minutes. Once we did order drinks the waitress just wondered around until after another 10 minutes we had to remind her we ordered drinks. Based on her bad attitude we just left and will not go back."

  • " A better experience than the first time! WHEW! Glad we gave it another try! It is DEFINITELY all about the meat here, but (most of) the side dishes were tasty, too - if a bit on the "nouveau/nouvelle" small side for items billed "to share". Cheese plate appetizer was minuscule - especially for the price. The snap peas sounded SOOOO promising, but were disappointingly flavorless - we barely touched them & the server didn't even notice - other than that the service was quite good :) A surprisingly nice selection of sparkling wines available by the glass for a place so heavy on that trendy, "gamey" side. Very "manly" cuisine. Super noisy (like all their restuarants). Parking is a headache (like all their restaurants)."

  • "Snuck in at 5:30 on Father's Day for a quick dinner before flying home. Server was very knowledgeable about the menu and given that we hadn't eaten there before, walked us through his favorite items on the menu. Ordered a fair amount of what he suggested and several items he didn't and only one of the items he mentioned was unimpressive. Not bad, just not something I'd have highlighted. Explained the need to get out quickly and he did an excellent job pacing the plates and took terrific care of us. Food was a mix of fantastic (fish of the day which was salmon, lambe belly app), very good (cornbread and braised greens) and good (a couple apps I don't recall). Overall, very good food experience but service made it a new favorite."

  • "My boyfriend and I have been wanting to dine here since before it opened and we finally got the chance last week. The interior design is very welcoming and comfortable, but modern as well. The staff was very polite and friendly, and seemed very knowledgable about the menu and gave reccomendations. The food and cocktails were delicious! Unique flavors, good ingredients, and not over the top. I will definitely be back again!"

  • "Went with my wife for our anniversary on a Friday night. Nice ambiance. Lively and energetic, but intimate seating and easy to have a conversation. We ordered the candied lamb for an app with bone-in strip steak and monkfish for our entrees. Chocolate skillet cake for dessert. We both the thought the food was good. But what really put our experience over the top was the service. Chris made fantastic recommendations and was extremely knowledgeable. His descriptions of our choices were spot-on. We would go back just for the dining experience, alone, but we were also pleased with our meal."

  • "I rated the food as 3 stars only because they were out of Turkey during lunch. Other than that, it was a great dining expereince - this was not my first time at the restaurant and definitely will not be my last. Service & food were fantastic!"

  • "We did the mix grill that feeds four, and it was a cool experience but you need to be a bit more adventurous than the average bear. The bone marrow was interesting, and the steak was very good. Definitely a place to splurge, but not one I will frequent. The wine and service was great and the bread was very tasty!"

  • "This was a real treat! Enjoyed an early dinner before a play and was completely wowed. Loved the Skillet Octopus, the Oyster Special and the Grouper. Not a desert person but I am so glad I did not pass this time. Our server was great!! This is a friendly, fun restaurant with amazingly good food!"

  • "we went to king and duke because esquire or GQ mag had it in the top ten new restaurants in the entire country...it's really really good but I wouldn't say it rates that high! but don't let that stop you from going - we still enjoyed everything! cocktails are unique and with fresh ingredients. the menu also features tasty food with a twist...a grilled carrots and beets with goat cheese dish was excellent as was the table bread - sort of a popover thingy with cheese. two of us had the bar steak and it was expertly cooked and tender and came with great fries. service is professional and with a smile! "

  • "Really wanted to love this place but just can't say I'll be back. Concept of restaurant is great. Space is spectacular. Drinks and most of what we ate was solid. Between four very hungry guys we had 20 dishes including desserts. The high point was the whole duck with the sauce made from the pressed carcass. Amazing dish, but worth $87? Hmmmm. But by far the lowest point was the boheamouth mixed grill platter of over done char and mediocrity for the bargain price of $125. Honestly. It was the definition of quantity over quality. Just plain terrible. Small plates were hit or miss, but overall it was a large disappointment. Real bummer. "

  • "Came here for our 5yr anniversary b/c we'd passed by many times and always wanted to try it. Very glad we did. Outdoor dining was welcoming and not too loud, service was outstanding and the food was top notch. The Maine crab salad appetizer is a must have. "

  • "Restaurant's energy was great. Fun young crowd. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. Our table was right on top of the next table which was awkward. Appetizer took a while to get out but was delicious (carrot and beat salad). Dinner was okay, nothing special that would make me want to run back next weekend. The skillet chocolate cake was amazing. Overall, nice atmosphere, reasonable food, but not the end all be all of Atlanta dining that others have suggested. "

  • "Our dinner at King + Duke was great in everyday. The service was outstanding and the attention to detail made the dinner perfect. The food was delicious and the suggestions from our server were spot on. We enjoyed every aspect from the space to the appetizers to the main course and dessert. The steak tartar was the best I have ever had and the crispy wings were very tasty. The grouper was so tender and the steak was full of flavor. The sticky pudding was indeed a treat."

  • "I would not recommend this restaurant and not likely return. I took my girlfriend for her 50th birthday and every fine restaurant I have ever been to offers a free desert for the person celebrating. Not only did this restaurant not do that after acknowledging her day, they were unable to sell us ice cream to go with the personal cookie cake I purchased for her then proceeded to attempt to charge us a desert fee for bringing our own dessert after spending over $120.00 for a very disappointing meal as she had to return her entree' and order something else because it was not good. I was also annoyed that the waiter couldn't get the drink order right continuing to put stuffed blue cheese olives IN the drink instead on the side. "

  • "This was our 4th time at K&D; had been happy with previous meals, all of which had been at lunch. This one was not as good. My wife's "simple salad" was swimming in dressing and had to be sent back. Her fava bean appetizer was runny and almost inedible. (My salmon entree (the special of the day) was so salty that I couldn't drink wine with it. My son's NY Strip was very good; the appetizers (chicken liver mousse and the smoky fish spread) and bread (popovers) were also good, but overall this was a very disappointing dinner compared to our earlier experiences."

  • "I've been here twice now and have the same review for each visit. The appetizers were creative and delicious, the drink selection was interesting and tasty but the entrees and price are the reason I won't be returning. If you are going only for appetizers and drinks then you will be fine, just don't venture into the entrees. I had the grouper which was undercooked and tasteless, the accompanying three charred carrots and chiles were the tastiest part of my dish; my friend had the trout which was good (wrapped in bacon anything would be) but nothing to write home about. Service was fantastic, the restaurant itself is very attractive and the patio is amazing but for $170 for two people I want my meal to taste good!"

  • "We had a perfect evening on the patio celebrating our great friend's birthday. The waiter was attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful, but not intrusive. The cocktails and wine were delicious and the food was fantastic. It could not have been a more perfect evening. The 2 appetizers we had: crab salad and smoked escolar fish salad were so good that a few of us ordered them with their meal. "

  • "Service is well behind the image and reputation of the restaurant. The place was empty at 1:00pm in Buckhead on a Tuesday in May - not a good omen."
