A word from Kin Shop
Kin Shop is a contemporary Thai restaurant opened by Chef Harold Dieterle and Alicia Nosenzo. The duo chose the name, Kin Shop, because “kin,” is the Thai word for “to eat” and the restaurant is the “kin” to their acclaimed restaurant Perilla, a mere seven-minute walk away.

Kin Shop’s menu features both contemporary reinterpretations of traditional Thai dishes and wholly new items inspired by Thai ingredients. Complementing Kin Shop’s menu (which is meant to be shared), are Thai-influenced specialty cocktails, a 75-label, spice-friendly international wine list with many bottles priced under $50, and a diverse globe-spanning selection of beers, many from small, craft producers.

The casual, but polished setting features comfortable banquettes, a long granite bar, and a chef’s counter for walk-in dining with a front-row view.

  • "My friends and I arrived at 9pm on a Weds for dinner without a reservation. We got wine at the bar and then were seated about 5 minutes later. The corn, broccoli and sausage sides were amazing. We also go the short rib noodles, which were incredible. I highly recommend getting this dish. The peanut noodles were a bit boring for me, but they were still quite delicious. The ceviche was great with a bit of ginger and meringue in there to give it a unique taste."

  • "Who'd have thought that anyone who won one of the TV food contests could actually cook? Harold Dieterle's Kin Shop is proof that someone can. Also. who would have though that a store front on Sixth Avenue--the avenue of broken dreams--would house a superb restaurant? But it's true. The food at Kin Shop is consistently outstanding. Dishes are smartly composed in the best Asian fusion style. The lunch menu is limited, but everything on it is outstanding. I've been more than 10 times and everything about this place is perfect. The decor is understated and beautiful. The service is friendly but not overly so. The food, well, it's all about the food. And it astounds everyone I've taken there. Bravo!!"

Everything was well-prepared and tasty, but portions seemed small (although we did not leave hungry). Service was attentive but seemed automatic."

  • "Went there for restaurant week but decided to order a la carte. Massaman goat curry was probably one of the best dishes I've ever ordered at a restaurant. My husband ordered the duck which was also delicious. The cocktail was the only thing I regret ordering since it was too sweet but there is a good list of wines and beer. Will def recommend this place and come back!"

  • "This was my second visit. I was disappointed with the restaurant week menu with limited entree choice off skate or vegetable curry. This visit I had the duck breast which I felt was not terribly innovative but was quite good. I ordered kale salad as an appetizer. It was also quite good and really more if an entree size. It would have been nicer to have a smaller size at a lower cost. The service is always outstanding. It would be nice if there specials on the menu since I feel like I've tried it all."

  • "We arrived a bit earlier than expected, and they told us to come back. So we headed for a walk around the area and returned when we received a text that our table was ready. We got there was subsequently told that we arrived too late and that they had a table booked an hour after us so we had to take a seat at the bar. It worked out but I was just peeved by the whole process. The food was good though, and the service was great after that."

  • "My first experience here was so-so, but I think we ordered wrong (as my boyfriend tends to do)- we had noodles and goat curry for entree. This time around, I thought the food was amazing! We started with the spicy duck salad- definitely spicy, so don't order it unless you can take the heat. Then I had the cod as my entree and my friend had the goat curry. We also shared a side of the fried broccoli. The cod was PERFECTION. The goat curry was good, but I wouldn't order it again (hence my experience the first time). This was a nice change from your typical NYC fine dining experience. I would highly recommend Kin Shop."

  • "Fantastic food, good service, excellent ambience. While the food took a little longer to arrive than we expected, it really is amongst the best Thai food I've ever had fish was cooked to perfection, sauces were amazing and the chilli jam is worth going for in itself!"

  • "I really like kinshop. I've been there twice now. Both times for special occasions, and both times they have been very accommodating to special requests. The duck laab lettuce wraps are SO good. They pack some nice heat, enough to get you reaching for tissues, but not too much. Goat massaman curry is delicious. Friendly service, but slightly scattered, I counted 4 different waiters and 1 busser at the table. The reason I'm giving 4 stars is their steps. It is a tough place to bring mobility challenged people, do not bring a wheelchair. The curb outside the restaurant is steep, the step to the door is high, and the door is heavy. The main problem is that the bathrooms are at the bottom of a very steep staircase. Otherwise Great spot."

  • "I often try new places during Restaurant Week, and sadly this one was disappointing. The kale salad was good. The skate was nice. The pork belly and vegetarian main courses were painfully spicey. The mussels appetizer was tiny. The rice pudding was a glob of sticky rice with a drizzle (barely) of the coconut sauce that seemed to be the default sauce in every dish. Strangely, even the mango sundae that was tasty was too much of a too sweet thing only saved by the peanuts. Sorry. I won't be going back."

  • "I had not been here for a couple of years. I read that people raved about the lamb said and the goat curry. I ordered both and was disappointed with both. The salad was salty.; the curry was mushy. However, the corn soup with roti were fabulous. Worth a trip."

  • "The food is outstanding. Hard to pigeon hole this place as either Indian, Vietnamese Thai, it's fusion and it's simply amazing food. A oarty in your mouth. My Friend and I came for her birthday lunch. I made an open table res. but also had a blackboard eats 30% coupon. We couldn't use the coupon because we ordered the express lunch which was an amazing deal in itself. $15 for two courses plus sides. When I made the open table res . I asked in the notes for a birthday candle to come with dessert. I can't tell you how many times I made this request and yet it was ignored. Not here. The service is attentive and amazing. Can't wait to come back and use my coupon!!!"

I was very disappointed with the food as there just wasn't anything special about it. The menu is pretty limited and even the list of specials was only four items long. I visited on a Monday night and the noise level crept up as the night went on. I was disappointed with the meal and did not think there was much value for the price."

  • "The food at noisy Kin Shop was very good. The chef at the moment REALLY knows what she is doing. Grilled octopus with lime and micro greens; short rib dish was complex and delish; duck with roti and tamarind/mango spicy sauce was unusual...still thinking about it. Now the bad news. The bartender is seriously going to sink this restaurant (sandy hair and beard). In spite of several reminders from the overworked server, our cocktails took almost a half an hour to reach us while the bar tender chatted to a woman while not making drinks. The server kept asking, he kept chatting. Our appetizers arrived, then the $$ cocktails came. All wrong with the appetizers. The wine was late too. For this piece, or any price, Kin Shop was not fair to us."

  • "I dined at Kin Shop with a group of about 6 girl friends and we had a great round table in the back right near the open kitchen. The waitstaff was very friendly but not overbearing which allowed the setting to be conducive to our conversations, and the food was very well executed and tasty. We shared a bunch of plates and there were pleasant flavor surprises on each dish, be it a spice or an acid, or an interesting taste combination. Loved the charred octopus, roasted cod, and duck - even the cauliflower steak was really tasty (though at $20, it seems perhaps it could be priced differently than the other entrees.) All in all, would definitely go back and hopefully sit at the counter facing the action in the kitchen!"

My server, Kate, was top-notch, as was the hostess, Samantha. Both very knowledgeable and genuinely friendly. Business was slow when I was there, but that must be an anomaly as this is one of the better restaurants in town. Highly recommended! "

  • "We went for lunch and ordered the $15 set menu which included a choice of a starter a main and a side. The food had fantastic flavor - not traditional thai but more of a mix of tastes from across Asia - and the presentation was gorgeous. Our server was knowledgable and made good recommendations. I'd definitely come back for more. I need to try the dinner menu next!"

  • "We arrived for our 9 p.m. reservation on time and were told there was going to be a brief wait. We weren't seated until 9:30. Nothing was done to accomodate us -- the host didn't even apologize. Service was slow and inconsistent. We both ordered drinks, but they came about 10 minutes apart. One of our bowls had crusted food caked on the inside; I asked for a new bowl and our waitress took the bowl, went around a corner, tried cleaning the bowl with a napkin, and brought it back to us. Given the poor service and the fact that the food wasn't that impressive, I wouldn't return or recommend it. "

  • "I dined by myself with a 6:15 reservation and was seated immediately in a quiet corner as requested. The service was impeccable. I had the delicious fried oyster and pork salad followed by the monkfish Meyer lemon curry which couldn't have been better. A good glass of a reasonable wine completed my meal. No dessert. All in all I was very happy with Kin Shop (my second visit) and will recommend it highly."
