A word from Kin Shop
Kin Shop is a contemporary Thai restaurant opened by Chef Harold Dieterle and Alicia Nosenzo. The duo chose the name, Kin Shop, because “kin,” is the Thai word for “to eat” and the restaurant is the “kin” to their acclaimed restaurant Perilla, a mere seven-minute walk away.

Kin Shop’s menu features both contemporary reinterpretations of traditional Thai dishes and wholly new items inspired by Thai ingredients. Complementing Kin Shop’s menu (which is meant to be shared), are Thai-influenced specialty cocktails, a 75-label, spice-friendly international wine list with many bottles priced under $50, and a diverse globe-spanning selection of beers, many from small, craft producers.

The casual, but polished setting features comfortable banquettes, a long granite bar, and a chef’s counter for walk-in dining with a front-row view.

Diner Reviews
  • "Always an exotic and excellent result here after many visits, this time for Sunday brunch. The thought did cross our mind though that maybe it's time for a bit of a freshening up. The upholstery, wall covering and wall hangings seemed more than just a tad tired. Wonder if the owner's energy and resources are currently directed elsewhere...?"

  • "Fantastic unique and very tasty food options, very fresh and wonderful service"

  • "I liked that all the dishes were presented in a way that was good for sharing. This allowed us to try many different dishes and they were all very good. The miang of scallop an lobster summer rolls were probably my favorite. Our waiter was extremely helpful in navigating through the menu and overall was very personal and helped contribute to the enjoyable experience at kin shop. I would recommend this restaurant to others in the future."

  • "It's hard to complain because it's a wonderful place - maybe we've just been spoiled by its perfection. We're big fans but on this visit it felt like there was something going on - the food was delicious but for the first time ever the server seemed to make the food seem less appealing, was incorrect regarding ingredients even when asked (rice wrapper versus wheat on the soup dumplings for example) and just overall wasn't as competent as we are used to there. As for kitchen, said soup dumplings had no soup in them at all, by the time they reached the table the wrapper had absorbed all liquid. The aquatic veggies, which we always get, seemed to be a little less savory and more stemmy - the goat was luscious but a bit fattier than usual -"

  • "This restaurant was great had restaurant week menu and was able to mix and match met up with a few friends and really enjoyed our food and the drinks. Spicy Duck Laab Salad Their specialty drink gotta get: Slow Burn * pueblo viejo blanco tequila, lime juice, calamansi nectar, house-made ghost chili syrup"

  • "The food was great. I'm not much of a thai food buff but it was all pretty tasty and relatively light. The cocktails were excellent and strong and the staff was especially courteous. I'd definitely recommend it and will most likely return to try some other dishes."

  • "Unparalleled price/value offerings in NYC. Well worth it."

  • "The limited menu makes an easy choice and everything on the menu is made with the same Thai traditions but with a slight spin. The food is incredible and a small restaurant makes for a cosy but loud ambiance. Ideal for a few friends but too loud for a group to work."

  • "My friend and I enjoyed our meal at Kinshop. Even though the restaurant was busy, we did not feel rushed and we received excellent service. I ordered the goat curry dish, which was excellently in both original concept and execution. My friend is a vegetarian and the waiter walked her through the menu and made recommendations for her. She enjoyed the cauliflower steak. I look forward to returning to try other options on this menu."

  • "I've been here twice and sampled quite a few dishes and everything is excellent. This time the goat was especially tasty and the laab salad was great - very hot, just perfect. They should expand the menu a bit - it could use a few more **** hot dishes. They also have a very nice selection of beers."

  • "We had the Red-Roasted Duck. What a unique taste! I try to describe it to friends but with the combination herbs, the fantastic roast duck cubes and roti bread it is a taste I couldn't explain. Fantastic...."

  • "Went there with my husband for dinner on a Saturday night. Very crowded (a good sign), and fairly loud, but the food more than made up for that. To start we had the crispy oyster and fried pork salad, which was perfectly cooked, and the skirt steak satay, which was so tasty. They only have three levels of spice -- no star, one star or 4 stars. The satay was one star, and just had a very slight heat to it. The Thai basil roasted salmon was to die for -- wish I had the recipe. It was served with a coconut curry base. They give it 4 stars for spiciness, and claim they are no joke. If you like spicy, you will like the 4 star spice level, but it isn't insane by any means. Waitstaff was very friendly and helpful, and service was prompt."

  • "Food was good but not outstanding. Would have done better if stuck to the regular menu than the restaurant week menu."

  • "Great restaurant week menu, and they gave full portion sizes. Only complain is they charged you for rice. How can you eat curry without rice?"

  • "I was so excited to try Kin Shop during Restaurant week. I expected that a place would want to shine with their selection of lunch and dinner menus specifically for this event. Sadly, Kin Shop did not. I know a LOT about Thai and 'Fusion" food. This was just, we'll….. mediocre. The staff was great however. But overall we found the dishes lackluster, even boring and the ceramic dishes need to be updated (stained with scrapes and too much usage). Comeon Kin Shop! Get your act back together!!"

  • "Kin Shop is always a great choice for drinks and their Thai inspired food. I got the braised braised goat curry - which I love. The meat is so tender and the curry is tasty. Give it a try; you will like it even if you've never eaten goat before."

  • "Wanted to see how Chef Harold diversified himself into Thai food. Very good Thai, enjoyable meal. Thought is was a little pricey. Not sure the restaurant week menu provided any value from a cost perspective. Will return ago."

  • "Chef Harold Dieterle"s take on Thai is to die for!! Any of the fish of the day dishes with green chile sauce will keep you coming back and craving for more. The brussel sprouts are the best I've had and I have tried them all! Good size portions for reasonable prices. Here you can get a true gourmet meal with app, entree, wine and tip for close to $50 or $60 which is a real feat in this gastronomic paradise of a city!"

  • "Hi, I've been to this restaurant before and think that the food is tasty and inventive. This past Saturday dinner I was there with a friend who is vegetarian. We were forced to notice that the menu is very limited for vegetarians, b/c the fish entree special and a vegetarian appetizer (I'm already forgetting what it was!) were already sold out by the time of our reservation at 8:30. Indeed the menu seemed limited even to me once half the specials weren't available. Really surprising for this restaurant on a Saturday night."

  • "I'm very picky about "Asian fusion" restaurants. But my husband and I were impressed with the creativity of the menu. They do have small portions, which some reviewers mentioned. The Crispy Pork Belly and Oysters is a MUST! Wasn't too crazy with the coconut cake that I ordered, I found it dry but our server took care of it right away. She asked me if I wanted another kind of dessert of just take it out of the check. I ordered the sundae instead which was very good. It has a very casual non pretentious appeal. Much like Chef Harold on Top Chef. My only suggestion is to add more things on the menu especially for the patrons who would keep coming back!"

  • "Each visit to Kin Shop brings new revelations. The creative approach to Southeast Asian cuisine is stunning. Begin with the Pork Meatball/bok choi soup, or Brussels sprouts with Chinese Sausage, or Tempura watercress and then proceed to wonderfully prepared goat, local rabbit and fabulous curries. All are surprising and very very good. The service is friendly, professional and unobtrusive. Good for groups of friends or go alone and sit at the bar."

  • "I've been to Kin Shop twice and each time has been delicious. The plates are small-ish and highly shareable. great for a date, or a small group (less than five). I wouldnt try doing a bigger party unless there's a more private space somewhere in the restaurant. the most important thing to know is that the food is GREAT."

  • "Two of the dishes we ordered - Northern Thai Curry Noodles and Pad See Ew - fell way short. The curry was thin and lacking in flavor, presentation was just average. The Pad See Ew contained 2 carrots and a couple of green leaves, the noodles were the bulk of the dish and were all broken into small pieces, and were overcooked along with the beef. There flavor of the dish was all one note - sweet. Service was friendly and attentive, the space is pleasant, but this was our second try and it just wasn't any better than the first. We won't return."

  • "The food was pretty good, I tried a few dishes and came away overall feeling good. It got quite noisy after a certain hour into the evening, but only because every table was occupied, a sign that they are doing well."

  • "My dad was in town for business and we met up here for dinner and it was delicious. The steak satay was VERY spicy, but everything was delicious and the staff was extremely accommodating when I decided to change my order and brought us rice ASAP to help tame the heat on the app. Will definitely go back."

  • "I have enjoyed several meals here and was excited to try brunch; it did not disappoint. I enjoyed the Thai-style fried chicken, which was incredibly juicy (right down to the white meat!). A fun, casual place producing consistently excellent takes on Thai and Thai-inspired dishes."

  • "Kin shop was good and the food very tasty. The menu wasn't exactly the kind of Thai I had expected. I expected more classic dishes. However it was very tasty and spicy- which is great- as so many Asian restaurants westernise their spicy-level to it being not spicy at all."

  • "Harold Dieterle, winner of Top Chef Season 1, has turned his attention toward a wonderful Thai food experience in New York City. We made reservations for 3, but had to add one at the last minute. The restaurant was friendly and accommodating and made the change without issue. Attire was casual and the atmosphere was relaxed. The restaurant was busy but not in a frenzied, unpleasant way. Cocktails were fantastic and the food even better. I had the ox tail salad and then the Massaman curry with purple potatoes and goat. Both were delicious. Also tried the red curry with duck, which was quite tasty. All in all one of the best Thai food experiences, I've had. Didn't break the bank and quite enjoyable."

  • "The great and innovative food was only surpassed by the friendliness and readiness to change from a 6 person to a 7 person setting at the last minute. Highly recommend."

  • "Had the tasting menu: Imaginative and satisfying fare. Informal , relaxed scene that can get pretty loud. More than reasonable for the quality and creativity offered."

  • "We were able to find a table on the same day for a party of 4 on a Saturday night. I have been to this place 2 years ago and kept a great souvenir. But this last time was a bit disappointing. The food was good and service really nice, but it seems to be better 2 years ago. Maybe the menu needs to be refreshed."
