Diner Reviews
  • "There's always something new to try at Kiji and the sushi is always fresh and tasty. Our service was a little disjointed this time. We had several different servers who didn't know what had already been ordered. We usually like to just order everything at one time and have it brought out in courses, but the waitress kept running off after we ordered one or two things, which was a little odd. Still great and I would definitely recommend it."

  • "Like any excellent sushi restaurant, you will pay a high price for the incredible quality of fish at Kiji. The sticker price may not look much above normal, but the portions are significantly small. You can easily spend upwards of $30 on nigiri and rolls alone and still feel hungry. That being said, this is some of the freshest, most delicious fish I have tasted in this city. They even have the rice down to a perfect science- and trust me, you will notice the difference. I do believe that it is all worth the price, but it helps to know just what you are getting into- and paying for."

  • "Went here because my friend is gluten-intolerant. I was impressed that they had gluten-free soy sauce and were able to accommodate the variety of dietary restrictions at my table."

  • "Our waiter was very nice, and I very much enjoyed the different sushi combinations. I will go back there for sure. :)"

  • "We had their special fixed Valentines Day menu. Great food, great service!"

  • "I definitely like the food at Kiji, but over time I've seen the portions shrink while the prices stay high for sushi. Also, the menu has too many options in all the categories, which makes ordering difficult."

  • "Food was great, sushi was fresh, and menu was very diverse. Also had wine and dessert which were excellent as well. Best if book a reservation because as are most sushi restaurants it's not that big and this is a popular spot. Definitely recommend."

  • "After researching where to take my foreign business associates for an authentic Japanese food experience, I ended up choosing Kiji, based on the reviews and their Michelin rating. The fact that they were not in the usual area of the city also made me think that they were different from the restaurants that cater to tourists in Japan town. We were not disappointed. Everything we ordered, and we ordered many different things, was beautifully prepared, superbly fresh tasting and perfect combinations of flavors. The staff was very friendly, personable and helpful. Best Japanese food in San Francisco. Be aware that it is a very small restaurant so larger groups are more difficult accommodate there."

  • "I really wanted to have excellent sushi for my birthday dinner. I looked up a bunch of places and decided on Kiji based on all the reviews. It was amazing. Service was wonderful and the ambiance was perfect. Hands down, this is the best sushi we've had outside of Tokyo. It was fresh, and all the recommendations the server made were outstanding. I highly recommend this place!!!!!!!!!!!"

  • "Kiji never fails! While we now reserve our trips to Kiji for special occasions post baby's arrival, we recognize this neighborhood gem is a fantastic spot for date night and have always loved our evenings out here. The staff is both polite and helpful, and the food is magical. I would eat here everyday if I could!"

  • "I went to Kiji Saturday night when I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just a good sushi dinner out with my boyfriend where we didn't have to get dressed up or wait at a crowded bar and it was perfect. The service was great, we took our time, food came quickly, other patrons were all on the same pace as us. if you're looking for an easy dining experience with good food I think Kiji is great, I'll definitely be back."

  • "Kiji may be the best sushi in San Francisco. It's fantastic and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We drive from Marin just to go to Kiji. Awesome."

  • "Very fresh fish, great food, service and ambiance. But they ran out of Uni 2out of the 3 times we were there. Also wish they have an oyster shooter WITH sake."

  • "We live in the neighborhood and have been going to Kiji regularly since they opened. We just love it! Very nice and casual with good friendly service. I am addicted to the red dragon catepillar rolls."

  • "The food and service were great. I spent $185 for dinner for two, then went home and had another dinner; I was still famished. I confess that I factor in value when I dine out (i.e. I'm cheap)."

  • "Very delicious, top-notch sushi. We mostly had nirigis (not that big into rolls) and the fish was very fresh and perfectly sliced. The restaurant is a little more spacious than it appears on the outside. The front dining area is loud and crowded but if you can score a table in the back area, you'll have a nice, quiet ambience that is good for conversations. Excellent service."

  • "That's the best sushi in San Francisco if not in the US if not in the entire world. Even in Japan I haven't eaten sushi better than at Kiji. Fantastic place!"

  • "Fresh delicious fish, incredibly knowledgable wait staff and great location. Also very nice sake list with daily tasting flights. Certainly not cheap, but worth it."

  • "The waitress listened and gave marvelous suggestions. The restaurant has cool but not overdone decor. The food is exquisite, possibly the best sushi I've had in SF, and I've tried A LOT of places. Just when I thought I'd tried everything, the special nigiri at Kiji opened my eyes to a bunch of new tastes I'm so happy to have discovered. The sake flights are a lot of fun, too; and a great way to discover new sakes as well."

  • "Just a general lack of effort by chefs and wait staff. Not worth the expense either."

  • "I eat a lot of sushi, probably too much, and I love this place. Intimate setting, nice music (who wants to eat with music blaring in the background...?) and great food. Attentive, knowledgable waiters. Huge sake selection. One of the best restaurants in the Mission, but slightly off the beaten path, which is nice. Parking is usually pretty easy as Mission parking goes. A lot of "non-sushi" items too- cooked food and vegan stuff. You can pretty much take anyone here."

  • "Kiji is consistently awesome. We love it. The fish is so fresh and they are creative in the sushi rolls. The carpaccio with truffle oil is amazing."

  • "My favorite sushi place in SF - and I take my sushi seriously. Super fresh fish, many selections flown in from Japan. Great preparation - fun to sit at the bar and watch the chef prepare his deliciousnesses... The "spoon" is a must - uni, ikura, quail egg with a bit of ponzu. Don't get me started.. I go there at lest 2-3x per month. Service is also great!"

  • "They refused to honor the points even we were there for like 3 hours and continuous ordering of both food and drinks. I did mention OpenTable when I arrived. Food overall was just okay, good if you are in the neighborhood and must have to have sushi for dinner, but there's nothing to write home about. It's pricey for what it was. Service was better when we first arrived when there were only 4 customers. Was hard to get their attention after 8:30pm when the place got busy."

  • "I live in the neighborhood, and I've been to Kiji over 50 times. My personal opinion: It's the best sushi bar in San Francisco. It's even superior to most sushi places in Tokyo and Kyoto, and elsewhere."

  • "Great reasonably priced Sushi spot near the Mission"

  • "The sushi was among the best in the city - impeccably fresh, perfectly prepared, and beautifully presented. The pork gyoza and vegetable tempura we tried were excellent. Service was a little muddled on a busy Friday night, but it appeared that they had just one sushi chef for the restaurant, which slowed down the food. We will return happily."

  • "wasn't super happy with the service, which was a mash-up of 4 or 5 different people at any one time, which allowed for a lot of service errors. the sushi was overall JUST okay, and when ordering alcoholic beverages, the staff seemed to be astonished we would want and ENTIRE bottle for a table of 6. a little disappointing considering the price/location."

  • "I've been eating sushi in many places: from New York to Tokyo. Kiji is the best among all. I've been there many times (~50 times), and each time it was better than before. If you like sushi and if you are in San Francisco - that's the place to go."
    Dined on 1/12/2013
  • "I love this place. It has a couple of quiet back rooms for groups and more private dining. Sushi bar is comfortable. Fish is fresh (had the best albacore sashimi here), rolls are interesting, and a huge sake selection. No techno music, just quiet, sophisticated jazz. This is now my go-to sushi restaurant."

  • "Fun experience, and a good date place! The menu was creative, and a little more varied than your typical sushi place. Plenty of options for vegetarians such as myself. The sake menu was good, and with the half carafes, very reasonable! And we had the cutest, most enthusiastic waitress (should have gotten her name!). Will definitely be back."
