Came here to celebrate the birthday...glad I did. The food was great, but the drinks could have been better. On to the good stuff: we tried the grilled Laos style said fage (good) and the crunchy coconut rice balls (must try). I was sold on the apps alone. For entrees we tried the spare ribs (nothing to write home about) and the chili prawns. The prawns came with this lovely sauce and grilled bread to sop it all up. The food had great flavor. Added bonus is the complimentary sticky rice and sauces they give you. You'll want to take a bottle of bang bang sauce home. Khe-yo was a nice surprise as I went in not knowing what to expect from Laotian food. I will definitely be back to try other menu items.

This is a great place. The seat by the window with pillows is the best. It gives you privacy and you can have great time with your friends. The food is a bit on the spicy side but if you ask them to remove the spices they will do it. Drinks are great and strong.

Had a great experience here the other night. Came for a friend's birthday and we all had a great time. The food was great. The staff was attentive. The host moved us to a better table/booth when another party did not show up. We shared the bass, chili prawns, coconut rice, noodle curry dish and a few others. All were excellent. We did not feel rushed. Our only complaint was that two of the main dishes came out at once.

Well done, casual SE Asian/Laotion take on sticky rice and the good things that accompany it. The ribs were delicious, even though a bit oversalted. Vinegary grilled prawns make the mouth water. Good beer and wine selection at reasonable prices.

Came with a group of 3 and ordered a bottle of wine and about 8 different appetizers/meals. While the food was good, the portions were incredibly small and not worth the money you pay for it. Not only that, when we asked for extra bread and iceberg lettuce leaves they charged you for them, which I feel when paying that much money for portions that small lacks any class. Would not come back. Tons of other great spots with good food.

I went to dinner with a group of friends, we ordered everything on the menu to share together. Not one dish was dissapointing, the food was extremely well cooked, the flavors were amazing and the service was great. On the weekend this place is quite and easy to get into since its in tribeca unlike many restaurants that are this good! Suggest you give this place a try.

Food, drinks, the place - everything's fantastic! If it was closer to where we live, we'd go there all the time. We took our friend visiting from Paris and she loved it too. She was expecting one of the usual standard Asian restaurants in NY, and was surprised by how cool and different it was.

Loved the beef jerky, but the red snapper and pork ribs were only average. I had hoped for and expected more, but still a good choice for trying atypical SE Asian cuisine. I've been to Laos, and Khe-Yo did reflect their culinary culture. It is just that most of the dishes lacked the elite execution that the prices would normally demand.

I write this review after two dinner visits. The food here is just totally average and for the price, way below average. Service and atmosphere are fine but the food is just totally blah. Many of the dishes are relatively tasteless and others exist merely as a platform to taste the assorted spices. You can get that at many places near the Port Authority for half the price. I love southeast asian food and there are many, many excellent ones in New York. This is not one of them.

Simple dishes. Good fish cooked to perfection. Be carful of the hot sauces. No knife. Pre-sauce rice is bland - I guess that's the traditional cuisine. WTF OpenTable, why do I have to checkbox your description for the review to be submitted? The only thing notable of the wine list is that it was short. byob.

Usually love it, great food. Are they messing around with the portion sizes? Had the red snapper recently, remembered it as a whole fish, but this time it was a single piece, on the modest side for the price, on top of a banana leaf rather than "wrapped" - it was a little disappointing. Good, but not the very good I remembered.

This is a lunch review. The only reason I called this place a neighborhood gem is because open table forces every reviewer to make some type of positive comment in question "2" of the review section otherwise, it will not accept your comments. There is nothing about this place that makes it a neighborhood gem. Six starter/appetizer items on menu and were out of four. Four entre items on the menu. Two variations of fish with noodles or rice, pork with noodles or rice and chicken with noodles or rice. None were anything special as we ordered three of the four entrees because of the paucity of food to select from. No dessert items. Sure hope dinner is better because this place is going to go out of business real fast.....and it deserves to.

If you are an adventurous foodie, try this place out. The food is fantastic, the specials are great and the service is wonderful. I went with a group of friends and we shared a number of dishes. Each one was more delicious than the next. However, I am impartial to the coconut crunchy rice. That and a bottle of wine - enough said.

My husband and I dined here and were blown away by the overall atmosphere of the restaurant and the superb preparation and presentation of our dishes. Having never had Laotian food, this was without a doubt the best restaurant we ate at during our weekend vacation to NYC. There is no comparison to the Chili Prawns, which are a must for any diner, as well as the sesame beef jerky, the ginger quail, Berkshire spare ribs and pork curry noodles. We tried many of the dishes and there wasn't a single one that we didn't quickly devour in it's entirety because it was so very good! Bravo to Chef Phet Schwader and his wonderful staff at Khe-Yo. We will surely return!

Being of a Thai-Laotian background, I like to eat food that reminds me of where I came from. I frequently can find a Thai restaurant anywhere, but a place that serves Laotian food is rare to find. I found this place through a Google search, looked at the menu and was excited to give it a try. Considering the fact that I haven't had any Laotian food since I was sixteen years of age (I'm now beyond twice that age), every bite of the food I took brought back some memories of the food my mother used to make before she past away. I've enjoyed the food, but gave the food a 'very good' mark instead of an 'excellent' because the papaya salad could had used a little less lime juice and have more of that robust authentic taste.

Dined here with a group of 5 last Saturday night, and had an excellent experience. The service was friendly, attentive, and quick (but not rushed). The food was absolutely incredible. We had a bunch of "small plates" and then split 4 entrees among the group: the glass noodles, the shrimp, the pork and noodle soup, and the pig face -- which was a special for the night and was phenomenal, albeit a bit adventurous for some. Overall, we had a wonderful meal and will certainly be back.

The staff seemed uninterested and did't explain the dishes very well and suggested way too much food. The starters were very hot and our group does eat lots of spicy food and found these over the top. The mains were very good and just the right amount of spice. We found the restaurant to be very noisy when full and hard to have a conversation with each other. With too many strikes against it I would not go back.

Service was eager, the decor is attractive and unintrusive, and the food was incredible. It's a brief enough menu for my party to have ordered two-thirds of the offerings, and each dish was cleanly flavored, distinctive and powerful. The pork belly salad, coconut rice, banana leaf black bass filet, lao sausage, and the ribs were particularly good - the dipping sauces were freshly made and highly spiced. The house cocktails were thoughtful without being overwrought (the cucumber and chile-infused vodka and also the bourbon and Aperol were very agreeable). The only drawback was that it is a small space and inevitably noisy. Best new (to me) place I've been in months.

I was happy with my experience at Khe-Yo. We were seated quickly, and the servers were very attentive and informative about the menu. The menu was a bit limited, however, the dishes were quite varied. I enjoyed the meal. Soft shell crab appetizer, sun shrimp entrée, and watermelon sorbet for dessert. All very tasty. The only gripe I have is that they charged us for the sparkling water, and there was a beverage tax (?). I have been to a lot of places, and never got charged for sparkling water. It would have been nice if they had mentioned that there was a charge when I ordered. All in all, I would probably visit again.
