A word from Kennedy Manor Dining Room & Bar
The Kennedy Manor Dining Room & Bar is a fine dining establishment in the heart of downtown Madison. The restaurant is just 3 blocks north of the Capital and a few minutes' walk from the University of Wisconsin. Please join us starting at 5:00 for cocktails at the bar. The dining room opens Tuesday
through Saturday at 5:30 pm, reservations are always recommended.
Located on the lower level of the historic Kennedy Manor Apartments and Hotel building, the restaurant has been a downtown fixture since opening in 1931. The dining room is decorated in an Art Deco style with twelve-foot ceilings and a row of ground floor windows. As you enter the establishment, you may think you are stepping into a restaurant reminiscent of a 1940's New York or Paris bistro.

I made reservations for 4 people
over a month in advance. Two weeks before the date, they called to announce that they canceled our reservation as they booked the restaurant for a private party. Our reservation was for a special occasion so we were beyond disappointed and had trouble finding another restaurant with a reservation open during "prime" dining hours. It would have been nice of them to offer us some sort of dining credit to use on a future date but that did not happen. This is the second time we have "attempted" to dine there and the second time that we could not. So, Kennedy Manor is definitely off from our list of places to go!"

I was in Madison for the first
time this week, and enjoyed a meal at Kennedy Manor that was exceptional in every way. Attentive and friendly service, a divine Caesar salad, tasty bread with a big slab of butter, and a flavorful pork tenderloin with perfectly cooked potatoes, carrots, and haricots verts. Plus, the wine and classic cocktails were priced very reasonably, and I was delighted to find a kir royale at the top of the menu, which long ago vanished from most restaurants. If you're fed up with menu trends like tripe, tongue, and pig's feet, and never want to see another cocktail featuring basil, figs, or foam, head to Kennedy Manor for timeless dishes and an ambience that is at once elegant and devoid of pretension."

Beautiful, 1920s-bistro style
restaurant below the historic Kennedy Manor Apartments. Superb, impeccable food, and an extremely well-edited menu. Restrained presentation, no ostentation or pretension, and SO delicious."

I know that I'll never be let down
at Kennedy Manor. It's the kind ofplace to take someone whom I want to impress."

We went to Kennedy for dinner
celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary. It was not a busy night which was great, as there were only a few tables occupied. The owners are very friendly and helpful in regards to the menu and wine list. The menu is not large but full of great choices for dinner, salads, etc. The food was great made in ways I have not tasted before. I would suggest it for anyone. the restaurant is in a great location in the basement area of a historical building. "

A one of a kind place. This is a
gem. The old building is quite interesting. I wish I could live their"

We chose Kennedy Manor to
celebrate our wedding anniversary and had a fabulous experience. Our server was very friendly, attentive and professional, sharing her insights to assist our menu selections. Right from the beginning I said that any restaurant serving chilled, lightly salted butter by the slab and fresh, crusty bread warm from the oven is great! The entrées were perfectly prepared and both served with fresh asparagus now at it's peak. The tenderloin had a nicely seared and seasoned outside while a perfect medium rare inside. The lemon chicken also had a nicely seasoned, crispy outside while tender and moist inside. Even the dessert had a special touch, flavored with maple syrup made by the owners, both taking time to visit with us."

Kennedy Manor was a great dinner
place with very friendly and personable people. It had a nice, semi-quiet atmosphere for our family dinner. I cannot believe something so relaxing and high-quality is hidden away right in the middle of the downtown-campus area."
Dined on 5/16/2014
Menu is not vast but everything we
had was absolutely wonderful! Foie gras was absolutely wonderful! Wine options are very limited would be my only criticism."
Dined on 4/11/2014
This is a restaurant that's been
around forever, but we only discovered it on our latest trip to Madison. It's a place that's been around since the 1930's and it has that ambiance. You feel comfortable and at home. The tuna was perfect, medium rare. The risotto was very creamy and very rich. The service was great. I would definitely go back again."
Dined on 4/4/2014
Staff were aware of our time
commitments and kept those in mind. We were finished dining in plenty of time to get to the theater."
Dined on 3/29/2014
The Kennedy Manor, as others have
noted, is a hidden jem. I took a dear friend there for her birthday the other night. The food was really good. The prices were decent. And I love the quiet ambience which makes it easy to talk while dining!"
Dined on 3/21/2014
What a perfect place for a quite
and private dinner. Discrete and attentive service. Perfect cocktails and delicious entrees. We plan to take our out of town guests to this Madison gem."
Dined on 3/12/2014
Limited menu but an item that all
can appreciate which allowed for more visiting and less time deciding. Easily something for every appetite Reasonably priced, quite setting where you didn't feel rushed and were not part of everyone's conversations! This is easy! I would return!"
Dined on 3/1/2014
The food was good but the service
was a little slow and we stood around awkwardly at the entrance for a few minutes until someone greeted us. Otherwise it was a nice setting and good prices."
Dined on 2/28/2014
As usual, we had an excellent meal
and a great time. I had the Ceasar's Salad and the Pasta Bolognese. Others had Polenta and Salmon. The wine and alcolholic beverages were a good price. The food came with enough time in between but not too much that kept us waiting. We had a party of eight and did not have to talk too loudly to be heard on the other side of the table. We visited this restaurant before seeing a show at the Madison Overture. It is on our list of pre-show dinners every year. We will be returning soon."

Kennedy Manor has the best food. I
have never been disappointed. It has great value and a lovely atmosphere."
Dined on 2/15/2014
Kennedy Manor offers an excellent
menu and thoughtful service in a blessedly quiet environment. The room is plain with Art Decco lighting fixtures. There is a small well - stocked bar that is appreciated by many. At the edge of a residential neighborhood near both the state capital and the university, the mix of patrons is refreshing."
Dined on 2/14/2014
We really enjoyed the food. We
each enjoyed a specialty cocktail. We shared the liver pate and eggplant polenta for our first course. I had the pork tenderloin and my husband had the tuna steak. We really enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back!"

The bartender/owner is very
approachable, friendly and helplful. The food was excellent, the ambiance, delightful. I will certainly go back. I took a friend and his wife there for his birthday, and everyone was very pleased. Great time, great place, great food."

Consistently a good dining
experience. Very quiet with nice jazz in the background. The menu presents a good variety of choices without being overwhelming. Service is friendly and we never feel rushed."

I don't eat here enough; the food,
ambiance and service never disappoint!"
Dined on 2/1/2014
Great food, great service! Retro
nightclub style dining room and bar. We had very enjoyable evening!"
Dined on 2/1/2014
A delightful dinner on a cold
night. The salmon was mind-blowingly good, as were our salads. Classic dishes, elegant presentation. Refreshingly slow pace as we were allowed to enjoy every course. Still, the server said that she would be able to expedite the courses if we were in a bit of a hurry. It's only a short walk from State Street. Kennedy Manor is well worth finding."

For diners with a lot of patience
and no sweet tooth, this might be a worthwhile stop. The food was good but it took a very long time to be served both our cold appetizers and our entrees. No dessert was available and it sounds like they ran out a couple of days prior to our Friday night dinner and couldn't be bothered to make more. I searched multiple times for any staff to get our bill. Lesson learned: if the waitress asks if you are in a hurry for the theatre, the answer is yes!"
Dined on 11/1/2013
The menu was varied and
interesting without being overwhelming. We would have enjoyed a greater choice of desserts, however; only two were on offer."
Dined on 10/5/2013
Quiet and art deco ambience. We
made a last-minute decision to go out on a Friday night and were delighted by the experience. Food was great. Our server anticipated our needs quite well. Not too crowded so the room was quiet and easy to talk. Ribeye steak was juicy and tasty. The chocolate pudding cake for dessert was the best of its kind in Madison. Parking is under construction and temporary parking is1.5 blocks away. After booking on Open Table the restaurant called us to guide us to the temporary parking--going the extra mile in customer service."
Dined on 9/20/2013
Secluded art deco restaurant in
the basement of the Kennedy Manor apartment building is quiet and romantic. Food was exquisite. I had the Sardinian pork tenderloin and it was mouth-watering, served with three (!) fresh veggies and some lovely melt-in-your-mouth roasted potatoes. Desserts were also fantastic. Really all around high quality food on par with Tornado Room and the prices are very reasonable. Only complaint is that the parking is a bit tricky if you're driving there and the interior could use a bit more care."

The Kennedy Manor is a wonderful
restaurant in a historic building. Fantastic food and atmosphere with great family run service."

My husband and I purchased a Bucky
Book and found a coupon for this restaurant in it. Since we had never heard of Kennedy Manor before and the online reviews looked good, we thought we'd give it a try. Parking was a bit far from the restaurant, but it was a beautiful night for a stroll through an elegant, historic neighborhood. The bartender was also serving as a waitress, but was attentive to us. The spinach salad was outstanding and the soup of the day (tomato & leek) was delicious. I had the pork tenderloin and my husband had the NY Strip (which we informed upon ordering was actually ribeye that night). Nonetheless, the food was delicious, although it was a little on the salty side. We will go back!!!"

We have eaten at Kennedy Manor for
years and always enjoyed the food and service. Tonight was no exception. My salmon was excellent and our antipasti was great. The wine list was being redone and they had little selection. The wait staff was helpful in finding a nice wine. Service was slow but we had friends along and didn't real notice."
Dined on 8/8/2013
From the radiators to the framed
B&W photos, I love the ambiance. There is no pretension. The food is delicious, the staff gracious and the service excellent. The fresh cut baguette bread alone is reason enough to go. I love the white linens, the small table lamps, the classic china, the pristine glassware."
Dined on 7/23/2013
Still great after all these
years...even though construction on the Edgewater has caused road work and limited parking, it is still worth the effort. Food is great and a nice variety. Service is excellent with a fun attitude. The historic ambience takes it over the top. we will be back!"
Dined on 7/17/2013
Food was not hot and was mediocre
at best. The wait was interminably long as well. Won't be back."
Dined on 7/5/2013
We got exactly what we expected ~
the best of service, the best on the plates and in the glasses, a quiet, pleasant atmosphere, and an appropriate price for all. I'm a steady customer."
Dined on 6/13/2013
Kennedy Manor is tucked into the
lower level of a classic multi-story walk-up residential building just across the street from a major Madison hotel on Lake Mendota. Fairly elegant environment, without going overboard. The menu is not very broad yet provides a nice range of options. I've been there twice and enjoyed the experience both times. Saturday night we had a party of five celebrating my son's graduation. Two salmon entres, two pasta Bolognese, one baked mushroom layered with phyllo dough. All were enjoyed. Appetizers and desserts were also good. Would definitely go back. One suggestion was more meat sauce on the Bolognese and more dill cream caper sauce for the Salmon. Both were very good, but we would've liked more on the plate."

This is our favorite of all
restaurants in Madison. We have been going here for over 10 years. The food is EXCELLENT, the service SUPERB and the quiet, romantic atmosphere WONDERFUL!! Parking is a problem right now with the Edgewater reconstruction, but they have parking available 1 block away. Well worth the walk. If you like to enjoy the company you are with, this is the place to go...quiet enough to visit, food worthy of tasting and service that is always consistently great."

This restaurant is located on the
lowest floor of Kennedy Manor, a classic apartment building with beautiful architecture. The restaurant decor is in keeping with the architecture--very classic and retro. The food was excellent, and most of the menu is gluten free. As someone the must eat a gluten-free diet, it's such a relief to have many choices and a confident waitress to assure me that my food selections were gluten free. I had the eggplant polenta, and my dinner mates at the roast pork tenderloin, and the smoked salmon. All of us enjoyed our food. We also ordered the three seasonal drinks: a cosmopolitan, a sparkling wine and Chambord drink, and a bourbon Manhattan. All were quite good."

I highly recommend Kennedy Manor
Dining Room. We tried the salmon with dill and the pork tenderloin, both of which were spectacular. I highly recommend the creme brûlée and chocolate cake as well. The staff are friendly and attentive. We had a late dinner, and at least at that point in the evening, the restaurant was very quiet and cozy, and I loved the 1930s feel! We will definitely be returning."

We don't go out that often and
stay away from the chains. We were there years ago for a dinner play and loved the food and wanted to go back so we did on Saturday. We were not disappointed, the food was excellent and our waitress very sweet and accommodating. Hope not to wait years to go back again."
