Diner Reviews
  • "While the food was "good" as hotel restaurants go; the retro hip style the W goes for here just doesn't quite make it at this joint. Small, crowded tables and could be noisy if people are actually there. It's pricey as hotels are but you get a decent portion. While the menu is unique, it is limited. The drinks are overpriced unfortunately so our bill was high and we walked away disappointed for the what we spent. Service was decent which is the only reason it got 3 stars. Should have gone for Breakfast instead."

  • "I had the perfect meal here on July 19th. The cocktails, the food, the service, the ambiance were all perfect."

  • "First time dining at Kelvin. Although it is connected to the W which is typically a very energetic bar and lobby, the Kelvin was quiet and thoroughly enjoyable dining. Food presentations were creative and I especially enjoyed the corn poblano soup. Service was excellent as well!"

  • "The food at Kelvin is great. The staff are friendly and attentive and the restaurant looks great and hip. It's a new place that isn't packed but it's great."

  • "My boyfriend and I came here last Friday night. Luckily, we were the first guests for their new menu. We had the tempura avocado (interesting, but not our favorite), the pork belly, and pork osso bussco. Both pork dishes were delicious. The pork belly had some bbq flavor with nectarines and frisee. It had just the right amount of crispy and fat. The pork osso bussco almost tasted like Thanksgiving with risotto and cherry compote. However, what really stood out was the service. Our waiter was excellent and the pork dishes were presented by two different chefs. We were also given a glass of champagne since we were celebrating. We sat outside on a beautiful evening. For summer nights, I'd definitely recommend sitting outdoors. "

  • "My son and his now wife, got married at 11:00 am at the San Diego County Courthouse so we made this reservation to take the entire wedding party (8 people) to lunch. The ceremony was shorter than we had thought it would be and they were very accommodating getting us in early. Our server was wonderful and took great care of us. Food was very good. We truly appreciate all they did to make this day wonderful."

  • "Menu had some interesting options but upon getting the food I was underwhelmed. Food was average or slightly above average but for the price, I expected a lot more. Nothing to write home about or to make me want to go back."

  • "My husband and I really enjoyed our meal at Kelvin. By far, the best "hotel" restaurant we've been to in San Diego."

  • "It was a great surprise to find out that not only we get 10% off with our SPG MEMBERSHIP, but all the wine we wanted was on the house. Food was good, service was good. We'll go again"

  • "The restaurant was beautiful and quiet for a Wednesday night. The service was extraordinary. However the food was not comparable. The should have better quality food for the type of restaurant this is."

  • "Great food. We eat out about 3 times a week and this was some of the best food we have eaten in a long time."

  • "We were the only people in the restaurant, which was a bit odd, but the service and good were good."

  • "From the time I had made a reservation online, everyone person I spoke on the phone during the confirmation were very professional, polite, and answered every question my wife and I had. Then, once we arrived the night of our reservation, I was greeted by Jose, the manager, again, very professional, made us feel right at home, and showed us around hotel lobby and rooftop. All through the nigh, Jose came by our area and asked how everything was going and if we needed anything. He really made us feel important and happy. My wife, myself, and our friends had a great and awesome time at Kelvin!! The food was delicious! Everyone loved it! I would recommend Kelvin to all of my friends and family. I look forward to going back to Kelvin. Jonathan"

  • "Nice atmosphere, great food. Quick breakfast when staying at the W"

  • "The atmosphere is very romantic in their dining area. It's very elegantly decorated and the servers are very attentive. I enjoy many things about this dinner, however, the fish I ordered was very dry (it wasn't the last time). I don't know if the chef changed, but I had to use a steak knife when last time I used the side of my fork. On the upside, the appetizer and dessert were fantastic. And our waiter was awesome!"

  • "This restaurant's food does not stand up to quality in the area. We got a nice bread basket. The two rolls in the basket were so hard you could not eat them. We had 2 orders of the halibut. It was very pretty on the plate and the flavor great, but both pieces of fish were very dry and overdone like cardboard. We did point these things out to the server after our meal. The corn soup and side of vegetables were great. I would recommend going to the W hotel that the restaurant is in for happy hour or after dinner for drinks. The rooftop bar is great."

  • "We've eaten at other W Hotel restaurants around the country and this was, by far, the most disappointing. The service was okay but the food was mediocre and the noise level made us want to finish and leave as soon as possible. One patron was using his hands as a megaphone to yell at someone at the other end of his table. The whole group was rowdy without any concern for other patrons. Right after we were seated the man at the table next to us was complaining to the waiter about his fish entree being overlooked. The poorly made plastic placemat had sharp edges that snagged my sweater several times before i placed my napkin over it to keep from ruining it. I wish I could find something nice to say about Kelvin but I can't."

  • "I expect more from a restaurant associated with the W. The staff was friendly and attentive. I was seated immediately and made to feel comfortable. We odered the Ahi Avocado for appetizer. It was good. Portion was perfect for two to share. For dinner, we ordered the chicken entree and halibut entree. Both were dry. The chicken a as a little salty. The halibut was overcooked due to the spices used (hint: if you serv this dish, it assume the timing would be accurate - just saying). Nevertheless, should I return, I'll skip entrees and stick with appetizers and cocktails (maybe try desert)."

  • "Service was very rushed. Granted it was Valentine's Day, but the food was average at best for a $200 dinner. The desserts were very disppointing, particularly the chocolate which was rock hard."

  • "Hip decor with tremendously friendly staff. Unfortunately our meals didn't meet our expectations."

  • "Found this restaurant on Open Table (of course) and decided to book it. It was our first time there and we couldn't have been more satisfied. We were seated promptly, the service was impeccable, and the food divine. We asked what our server would recommend and after a few suggestions, we settled on sharing a couple. It was a great meal! We will definitely be back and before next year!!"

  • "This is in the W Hotel and recently remodeled which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It has good food and service and there is a lot of different colored, subdued lighting. Some may not like some of the food items but everything we have ever tried we enjoyed, worth the effort to try."

  • "A lovely little spot in the Hotel W in San Diego. We weren't expecting much from a hotel restaurant and so were pleasantly surprised by the service and food. I think we were the only people there so I guess no one knows how nice kelvin is. Give it a try!"

  • "Although we dined there on Valentine's Day with a special three course menu, the choices were great and the food was wonderful! I took the time to glance at their regular menu and I will definately go back to try it again."

  • "January 10-Feb 10 '13 is SPG restaurant month (mark that for next year!) and they have special SPG menu that was a great value. The decor is very contemporary and the food was excellent - especially recommend the Poblano corn chowder with popcorn. Unfortunately for pet lovers you can not have pets on the their outdoor patio. Lets put the "W" back in Woof!"

  • "I was disappointed. The atmosphere and food were so very good; but it took far too long to get each course and it was not due to the waitress."

  • "Went for Christmas Eve dinner. Prix Fix selections were not attractive, the regular menu was nice and food was good. Service was fair. Witnessed other table returning some food to the kitchen. Decor is modern. Seats too cushy to seat comfortably in booths. Atmosphere is awkward."

  • "We were there on the weekend before Christmas and almost all restaruants were off that night, however, we had a great meal and got good service. It is newly done and has a unique seating arrangement and the colors are bright but easy on the eyes. The food has a nice latin influrence and the Paella and the Pork Chop we both had were exceptional. Give it a try and you will enjoy it."

  • "This was a last minute find on our phones on an otherwise failed Thanksgiving day. Vibrant colors, beautifully arranged plates topped only by their exquisite flavors. Mmmmm. Had ourselves the "freakshow " cabby...it was also a fantastic late night find! There was a table full of noisy, super energetic kids across from us when we first arrived.(it WAS Thanksgiving..) however, they cleared out well before our plates arrived and then the setting was actually pretty calm & romantic ... Our waitress was a blonde haired gal with a great sense of humor who was extremely attentive to our needs and didn't miss a beat when it came to offering helpful insights into the menu selections, as well As the wine list. One of the nicest Thanksgivings evr !"
