A word from Kellari Taverna
"The dining experience should be sharing appetizers so that everybody can get to taste different flavors and textures " Chef Gregory Zapantis.

"Many people ask me if this is Greek Cuisine , and I don’t know what to compare it to, either to Greek cuisine of 1962 or 2009, but my answer is a seafood restaurant with a Greek Flare to it " Chef Gregory Zapantis.

"Our Menu of Simply Grilled fish but simplicity with elegance ! " Chef Gregory Zapantis.

"we are bringing to the people of Washington Something they haven’t experienced before " Chef Anthony Acinapura.

Kellari Taverna is very sensitive to sustainable seafood.

Diner Reviews
  • "We chose this restaurant because we love Greek food and we were meeting our friends who were staying at a nearby hotel. The service was excellent and the waiters were very attentive. However, the spinach pastries were very mediocre, lobsters were fair, the lamb chops were very fatty, and the deserts were just acceptable. You have to pay about $125 (choosing cheap wine) per person. The food was not commensurate with the prices charged. There are so many other Greek restaurants which are less expensive."

  • "went to Kellari in New York City prior to the theater in December. Food was very good and the décor clean and rustic. there was a small sign announcing their new DC location so when we went to DC we thought we would have same experience but without the show. unfortunately for us, the food, while good, was not as good as in NY (ordered the same dishes). portions were much smaller but prices higher! the restaurant is surrounded by office buildings and it seems it is more in tune with an expense account business lunch. the décor could be brought current."

  • "Excellent Greek dining with an emphasis on seafood. Strong and reasonably priced wine list, stay Greek and you will be happy. Elegant and tasteful room. Professional service. Best olives this side of Athens, not to mention celestial taramosalata. Only downer: the pikilia assorted spreads appetizer had tiny quantities more appropriate for a chemistry experiment than a first course. At $22 it would have to be considered a poor value. Avoid that and you will love your meal."

  • "Good restaurant; great food but few options different than fish and seafood... no moussaka..!!! We missed it"

  • "We ordered a few meze dishes and some were superb and others were lackluster. The radishes tasted like canned (it is obvious that they are house-made, but there was nothing special about them), the meatballs were okay, again, not great. The best was the lamb. A little pricey for the quality of the food. I work around here so I've tried pretty much every restaurant in the area and am a bit of a foodie, so I'm particularly harsh. That said, the decor and ambiance of the place is superb, and the full entrees looked much better than the meze. Our waiter was also really awesome."

  • "My husband and I were at Kellari Taverna on Saturday evening to celebrate our anniversary. As always, the food, service and ambiance were excellent. We highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions as well as for lunch."

  • "Prasini salad, special salmon, peach sorbet are all excellent as usual. Service was a bit more abrupt than the usual excellent service, but our waiter was at the same time serving a banquet/lunch of 16 people so I understand."

  • "This restaurant has terrific ambiance and an impressive and varied menu. Unfortunately, we found the food quality varied with two of our (limited lunch) dishes not well prepared or undercooked, while one dish was superb. I have gone to this restaurant a number of times in past years and had excellent culinary experiences so I hope that this was simply a weaker day and wish them well. Worth a try but order carefully."

  • "I had the grilled seafood. I thought I was in Santorini!"

  • "First experience at Kellari and will definitely recommend. It is such a surprise in the middle of buttoned-up K street to find a very elegant restaurant. The food was really delicious and everyone tried something different. It was a Sunday and the bar was open but there is no drinks list (alcoholic), just a list of wines and beer; there were refills on several standard brunch drinks like Mimosas, which is a nice touch - the food is worth the visit."

  • "Very fresh seafood. The grilled calamari is delicious and the salads with seafood are excellent and light."

  • "Excellent food - fish is fresh and well-prepared. Great variety of appetizers. Four of us shared an appetizer, then ate "family style" with two whole fish, a Madagascar prawn, and two side dishes. Our server helped us choose the right quantities so we would have enough food and it was the perfect amount! Desserts were delicious - I don't usually have dessert but I recommend saving room - we shared 3 choices and each was excellent! A wonderful evening. Lunch at Kellari is equally wonderful - I've had lunch here two or three times. Can't say enough good things - and it hasn't declined in any way over the several years since opening."

  • "With so many good restaurants in DC, it's rare that I find a new one that can break into my regular rotation. But I will definitely be visiting Kellari Taverna again. The food was outstanding, and we received some very good advice from a very knowledgable waitress. Overall, I think the experience was worth the somewhat steep prices (in my opinion, Opentable mislabels the pricing for this restaurant, so be prepared to spend a bit more than what the website suggests)."

  • "From the wait staff to management the service was impeccable. This was a relaxed and inviting atmosphere that allowed us to enjoy a great meal, have a few side conversations and laughter. The food was well presented and prepared satisfying the appetite of each member of the group."

  • "Kellari's food was delicious. However, if you don't mind be treated poorly by snobby male hosts then this might be the place for you. The dining experience in the restaurants involve more than the food itself. You have to be more considerate towards customers and learn to be pleasant especially if you want good reviews and repeated business. From the outside, this restaurant looks pretty at night. After experiencing average service for the prices they charge, I will most likely not return."

  • "But I arrived at this restaurant, I was quite impressed as I was expecting a more traditional Greek restaurant book. The bar and fresh fish selection were fabulous and service was friendly and responsive."

  • "Everyone was impressed with the freshness of the food first, the taste second, and the presentation, third."

  • "Wait staff was attentive but not intrusive. Brunch menu was a great fusion of Greek with traditional brunch fare. Quiet classy surroundings. Took a shot in the dark booking reservations from Oklahoma sight unseen and was pleasantly surprised. DC relatives who are hard core diners enjoyed the experience as much as we did."

  • "My friend and I went for lunch/brunch. It was such a great experience. Our waitor Ilir was great. He speaks so many languages and was so funny. The food was awesome. My friend had lamb and I had Tispoura. It was so flavorful. We both ordered baklava for dessert with the intent to take half home. Nothing made it to a doggie bag! We went at 3:00 on a Sunday afternoon which was great, but as the evening went on and people started to come in, It became clear that we should have stayed longer or booked our reservation for later. It was like the party was just getting started. The restaurant plays Greek music the first Friday of each month so I plan to go back with my husband."

  • "Both the service and food were excellent. The presentation of the fish for our table to select from was great, and our server guided us to our choices with great input. While still not a big fan of Greek wine, we were exposed to a couple that were quite nice and opened our eyes a bit."

  • "Outstanding preparation and selection of seafood! Wait Staff helped pick out the perfect wine! Rather expensive."

  • "I have always gone to Kellari's because of the food and service. This time I had some concerns...I had ordered my food a specific way, that instruction wasn't followed. Although I had ordered from the business lunch special (appetizer, entree, dessert) I had to wait several minutes for my sorbet after the others at my table had received their coffees. It makes a different when in a time crunch. I was just surprised this time."

  • "mediocre food and terrible music, especially for Valentine's Day. Who goes to a Greek restaurant for non-Greek music???? Food quality was average, at best, making it very overpriced. Waiter was great."

  • "My only critic: Please update your website! It still states that both valet parking and your corking are free, when in fact there are fees for both. Also, you are listed as a "free BYOW" in open table which is misleading."

  • "Kellari Tarverna is always a dependable restaurant where good food and friendly service is a constant. With food good enough for foodies, ambiance pleasant enough for special occasions, and casual enough for an impromptu dinner, Kellari is a most versatile eatery."

  • "This is a good place for happy hour and I love the free cookies, but the entree prices put this out of the park for a weekday lunch."

  • "Hi, I love the visual look to the Taverna and enjoyed the food and service. I'm happy to take my Valentine out for a $200 dinner but the restaurant was playing Pandora music - country, classic rock - that filled the restaurant - it ruined the experience."

  • "Went for the weekend brunch special. Arrived at 12 on Saturday and there was hardly anyone there, which was surprising given that both the food and service were amazing. The host was extremely professional and ensured that we were well taken care of. I will definitely be returning!"

  • "Great deal on weekend brunch. For $26.95 unlimited mimosa, bellini, bloody mary, coffee, tea, and juice plus 2 courses. Recommend the lobster ravioli. The calamari was chewy but flavorful. The proscuitto on the eggs benedict was too thick to cut and take a bite. I expected thinner proscuitto that I could easily slice. Overall good experience. I would eat here again."

  • "We were really craving some of the memorable Greek food we had on our honeymoon, so we ended up going for an appetizer-heavy meal: Greek salad, saganaki, spanakopita, pikilia, grilled calamari. Everything was fantastic! We really wanted to try their fish- they have such a wide selection- but we already had so much food! We were stuffed, but couldn't pass up their baklava for dessert...it definitely did not disappoint! The wine list has an excellent selection of Greek wines. We found another favorite of ours: A Hatzimichalis cabernet. Highly recommend KT for an authentic Greek meal."

  • "There were very few people at the time we arrived which was 5pm. After we were seated, the waiter introduced himself and we ordered drinks and our meal. The waiter left without letting us order an appetizer. I called him back and then had to run to get him and place my order. Our waiter never took me to see the fresh fish so that I could pick out my lobster. My girlfriend finished her drink an the waiter never asked us if she wanted another drink. For dessert, I asked for a recommendation, the Loukoumades or the baklava. He said ,"the Loukoumades were too much." I looked at him angrily as I was offended. He quickly said " the volume is a lot." I orders the chocolate mousse cake and baklava. I will not recommend this restaurant."
