A word from Kellari Taverna
"The dining experience should be sharing appetizers so that everybody can get to taste different flavors and textures " Chef Gregory Zapantis.

"Many people ask me if this is Greek Cuisine , and I don’t know what to compare it to, either to Greek cuisine of 1962 or 2009, but my answer is a seafood restaurant with a Greek Flare to it " Chef Gregory Zapantis.

"Our Menu of Simply Grilled fish but simplicity with elegance ! " Chef Gregory Zapantis.

"we are bringing to the people of Washington Something they haven’t experienced before " Chef Anthony Acinapura.

Kellari Taverna is very sensitive to sustainable seafood.

Diner Reviews
  • "Went to Kellari Taverna for Restaurant Week with my girlfriend. The food there was excellent, and they give you a great portion size (unlike some restaurants which seem to try and cut corners for Restaurant Week diners). The service was also phenomenal. Highly recommend Kellari."

  • "We went there for restaurant week - it took a long time to have the waitress come over and I felt they could have been more attentive - spanakopita was good, dessert was good, but there are better Greek options in DC"

  • "Very disappointing, 85% tomatoes, flaming cheese with no flame and NOT warm"

  • "I have eaten in this place a few times and it is very nice ambiance and it has one of the freshest fishes in town. The service was friendly and hospitable. Also I have had their pork shops which taste as it were in a Greek isle. At the end of the meal the server gave us free of charge a glass of dessert wine which was very welcome with the sweets. This is a worthwhile place to visit."

  • "Everything was delicious from the appetizer to the dessert! Try their sour cherry mojito so sweet. They have an extensive wine list from all over the world."

  • "I usually go to your restaurant to eat fresh grilled fish. However, I also enjoyed grilled lamb this time. I brought my guest from Los Angeles, and she was perfectly satisfied too. Watching her, I was happy to have had chosen your restaurant."

  • "Restaurant Week here was exceptional. I would recommend Kellari to others. The Seared scallops w/risotto & truffle oil."

  • "AWESOME and INTRIGUING MENU!!! Fresh seafood prepared in delicious hints of flavors that embrace and tantalize without overwhelming the palate with salt/brine."

  • "Great food, great service and even better food. I had driven by the restaurant for years but had never been able to visit. That will change in the future. Excellent experience before hitting the Kennedy Center."

  • "I had added a small note to my reservation on Open Table about how we're celebrating my boyfriend's birthday, and the restaurant took it very seriously! The entire staff was so incredibly welcoming and sweet, they greeted him with birthday wishes and gave us a complimentary glass of champagne. I really don't think I've ever had better service- they were so professional, friendly, and truly provided us with a wonderful experience. The ambiance was perfect- very beautifully decorated, lighted, and romantic. The food was delicious! I had the Chilean seabass, and it was cooked to perfection."

  • "Really deliciously prepared mains. The lamb was perfectly cooked as ordered. And the appetizers were great. Got the eggplant and zucchini chips and they were exceelnt, with just enough tsatsiki for the stack. Very shareable. And the Greek wines were really nice. I loved the Gtreek Syrah. I like the DC banch almost as much as the NY one!"

  • "We had lunch for 5 and the service was wonderful. Our waiter did a great job explaining the specials and verifying that we understood what we had ordered. When the shared appetizers arrived he suggested we start with one, as it was better hot and said the flavors of the other appetizer would overwhelm the first. We appreciated and followed his advice. The food was incredible! We all enjoyed our choices (fish, salad, oysters)."

  • "I want to thank Kellari for "listening" to my request via Open Table for a table in a quiet location, away from the main area. Upon arrival, we were showed to exactly such a table where we could conduct business discussions without disturbances. Thanks to the staff for meeting my request so well."

  • "Superb food in lovely surroundings, with well above average service. My husband & I recently tried the Sunday Lobster feast, which is not to be missed. He started with the grilled calalmari appetizer, and it was delicious; I started with a Greek salad, which had the best tomatoes I've had in forever. We both choose the grilled lobster--2 lbs each--more than I could eat, so there was lunch the next day. The lobsters were perfectly prepared and scrumptious. We ended with the chocolate torte (taken home) and vanilla gelato--delicious & patate cleansing. Both of us highly recommend this find."

  • "I have been to KT on probably five previous occasions for business lunches that have been great. The food was just "OK" and the service was attrocious on my latest visit. In one visit servers: were bickering with each other beside our table, asked us three times for our drink order, tried to deliver the wrong table of food, and let an inordinate amount of time pass between courses. Forget the finer points of serving and clearing properly."

  • "Kellari is the best Greek restaurant in Wasington, DC. Everything was perfect. The service was excellent and the food was superb."

  • "focus is in greek cuisine with a specialty in seafood, yet have a meat selection//restaurant found opentable reservation without a problem//dined on a voucher and there was no hassle redeeming it. all the food was fresh and cooked to order. the fisherman's soup is the absolute best seafood soup! it is regularly on the menu - must try! lobster was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious!"

  • " The food was cold and not prepared the way it was ordered. The restaurant is quite pricey and there is a certain level of expectation that is expected in quality. It in no way lived up to this standard. One guest asked for his meat medium rare and without sauce on top and it was well done and and it was drenched in sauce. Another asked for salad without out onions and again, they were present. The prepared fish (a signature dish) was served cold and again overlydressed. The sides of vegetables were ice cold too. The restaurant was not crowded and , for the prices charged, unacceptable."

  • "I always dine early as not to take up space...needless to say, I was not treated any differently as if I was a table of six instead of one. My server Efrain was very attentive, answered all my questions and gave me suggestions. He was very well informed of the menu. The Lamb chops with the potatoes were to die for. Everything just melted in my mouth. The special cocktail with bourban just hit the spot upon arrival."

  • "Unfortunately we have to rate the service lousy on Monday. My BFF and I thought Abdon was an unattentive, aloof and somewhat rude waiter. He wasn't at all friendly. We both felt he didn't feel like helping. When asked about cheese for happy hour, he pointed over his shoulder in the direction of the cheese. In fact, he at that time since it was still early (5p) was on his phone. Guess I disturbed him. He never welcomed us checked on us, it was the lady greeter who at one point took our second order. Maybe he was having a bad day but we decided we aren't coming back for awhile. A pity because I book quite a few times through open table for Kellari. We were both surprised and disappointed at the service."

  • "Kellari Taverna is perhaps the best Greek restaurant in Washington, and also features a great seafood selection. The two- and three-course dining options are excellent value, and the comprehensive wine list is perhaps the best source of Greek wine within the DC Beltway, by glass, carafe, and full bottle. My only criticism is that, having selected the two-course option (appetizer and entree), I still had two servers trying to interest me in dessert and coffee as well."

  • "We tend to get the heavier meats, moussakas, Greek salad with feta and the like in most Greek restaurants. But Kellari gives us the real feel of what I'd expect if I were in the Greek isles. Octopus, fish galore, grilled with light but perfect flavors. The mixed seafood appetizer was a perfect meal and more than I could finish. I had to take some home. Don't miss the Greek coffee - excellent. Love Kellari for happy hour as well."

  • "Everything was really good. And we had an outstanding server. Would have rated overall experience 4 or 5 stars but entree was very slow."

  • "Fantastic menu and service. Wonderful atmosphere."

  • "Kellari Taverna is my no. 1 spot for business lunches. The food is consistently delicious, light, healthy, interesting and attractive. The service is impeccable -- attentive, but not intrusive -- and the noise level is low enough that conversations can be had easily."
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "I requested a relatively quiet table and at first they wanted to seat me in a 'private" (dark) room in the back. After some hemming & hawing, two possible tables in the front room were 'found'. I believe they should have given me those options to begin with. Food 'ok' but not as good as previous lunches. I thought calarmari & octopus, which I requested on the Greek salad, was not cooked to order. Waiter also opened and poured a second bottle of sparkling water without asking if we wanted it. That being said, salad ingredients were fresh and service friendly."

  • "One of the best authentic Greek Restaurants in town!"

  • "From its consistently good good to its excellent service and lovely dining room, Kellari Taverna is an exceptional restaurant. Grilled calamari is outstanding."

  • "I enjoy this Greek restaurant in downtown DC and take friends there for special occasions. The food --especially the seafood --is always fresh and the service is always good."
    Dined on 7/5/2014
  • "Always top flight very fresh food. The fish and lamb are terrific. The lobster salad is particularly excellent. Pleasant, light room."

  • "Went for a special birthday dinner. Food, as always, was excellent Nice setting. But the music playing was quite annoying. Didn't want or expect Greek music. But something conducive to spending $300+ for dinner. I may as well have been at Hooter's or TGIFridays. My office is around the corner, so I stopped in this morning to speak to a manager and give my feedback, as I didn't want to do Saturday night and ruin the celebration. The hostess wouldn't even let me speak to a manager. Ran interference and thanked me for my input. Pretty sure where it got filed."

  • "Ate here in a group of 6 before heading to the DC Improv. It was very convenient, had good food and a nice wine list and great service. My mild fish was cooked very well and paired nicely with a salty Spanish rice and sweet beets. I would return."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "Started with Spanakopita. Theirs come in a roll in place of the little triangles or layers. Very tasty, would have been better if they had been hot instead of just warm. This is a pet peeve of ours food that is not hot when served. Seems particularly odd given the number restaurants that use runners to deliver your food in place of your waiter doing it. We selected a Fagri from the beautiful display of fresh seafood. It was simply fixed, broiled with olive oil and served with lemon. A very mild fish as described by our waiter. I would of preferred a little more flavor. It was slightly overcooked, a little dry and chewy. It's hard to cook fish, I understand. Nest time I'd just get a number of appetizers and call it an evening."

  • "I dined here solo while on a business trip after a client had canceled last minute; the fish wa outstanding, and prices reasonable for fish. Menu is simple and focuses on the fresh fish. I had a watercress salad and greek yogurt for desert. Good simple meal."

  • "Lovely restaurant...a favorite of the group. Good food, nice ambience, comfortable decor, warm and atttentive service."

  • "My girlfriends and I had a great brunch and the food was also very good. The bottomless option was reasonable as far as price and the amount of food you get on the fix prix. The service was attentive and friendly, I would definitely go back!"

  • "The tzatziki took me back to when I lived in Athens. The grilled fish looked and tasted like perfection. The pasta dish was meh and could have used a little more feta to bring up the flavor profile. Nice place for a business lunch."
