Diner Reviews
  • "Best service and very friendly staff . They knew we were going to theater and space our courses accordingly. Food was superb - fish was fresh and outstanding"

  • "At times the reception area is kind of chaotic. Also, at a recent visit they could not locate my open table reservation and a few days later they wrote me a note telling me that they regretted I had not shown up for the reservation."

  • "I live in Houston, Tx, but Kellari remains my favorite place to eat anywhere! The food is outstanding. Well prepared and plated in a beautiful manner. Service is perfect, never pushy! Whether for business or personal fining, I always go to Kellari's!!"

  • "This was our first time to this beautiful restaurant. The ambience was just right and the food was wonderful and delicious. Prices were very reasonable for this delicious and fresh food. Service was excellent. Just right. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "A Native NY'er I chose this place as I had theater tickets. On arrival, the host station was flooded with diners w/o reservations. When I indicated I had a reservation, the host checked me in but invited me to sit by the bar and wait for my table as others w/o reservations were promptly seated which was mildly discouraging to me. Mentioned to same host I was going to a show - he proceeded to seat me behind the host station opposite the bar. Not a good sign or seat at all, but didn't fight it. Server was amazing, courteous, attentive, even providing a pre-theater/pre-fixe menu when asked which ended at 7 and it was 7:15. However, the meal was subpar. Medium cooked lamb chops were dry. All else, mediocre. Not worth $120 check 4 two."

  • "Delicious food all served and tasting so flavorful and fresh. Great array of choices and wonderful options for fish & seafood. Atmosphere was beautiful and the restaurant had a great vibe Really nice spot to meet friends for drinks with a wonderful bar area and tables and chairs to relax and order finger foods. The only complaint I had was our waiter. He was not helpful and quite honestly we all found him to be rude and impatient"

  • "One of our favorite restaurants before or after theatre. This visit surpassed them all. Four of us shared a whole fish (recommended by Nikos, our server). It was extraordinary!! And Nikos' service was wonderful!"

  • "great service. we asked for a better table and were accomidated .great salad and grilled octopus BUT.... fish was served cold."

  • "I was in NY from Boston to meet celebrate my 50th birthday... had dinner here before the theater. The restaurant is located in the theatre district so it was a great choice location-wise. The food was delicious and classic Greek... not American-Greek but what you would expect to see at a Taverna in Greece (I've been). The owner came by, chatted with us and gave us an after-dinner wine and dessert tastings which was such a lovely, personal touch. Was an overall exceptional experience... would highly recommend Kellari."

  • "The food was wrong, cold and not explained thoroughly. Our runner, Alex kept bringing us the wrong food and we were given the wrong info on our fixed price menu, so we ended up only paying for one....but it was just too much work. We loved the atmosphere, but the food was lacking. We may try it again, but choose from the menu not the prixe fix."

  • "As always the food was delicious. Service could have been better."

  • "Kellari is a great choice for a midtown lunch. The prixe fixe is a great value - many good choices. We had the grilled calamari, lentil soup, salmon and the lobster ravioli - all were great. The a la carte menu has some great choices as well. The space makes you feel like you've left midtown Manhattan. While the servers are all very nice, our service was a bit disappointing. The appetizers came out immediately, and then we had an extremely long wait for our entrees, which caused us to be rushed and late even though we told the server we had a time constraint. There was a large party in the back, which may have contributed to the problem."

  • "This is now the third time we've dined at Kellari pre-theater. It is always good and was excellent this last outing. The pre-theater menu is very worthwhile and a good value. The service is relatively expeditious and gets you on your way in time. The fish is perfectly cooked - always. I do think this is the only restaurant in or near the theater district that I will patronize from now on."

  • "Typically this theatre area greek restaurant is one of our favorites with delicious grilled fish and lamb. This night, for some reason, the food was at best fair. I'm hoping that this past Sunday was an anomoly."

  • "I know, Greek restaurants have the fish display. The fish is grilled with a little oil, salt, pepper, lemon. Fish is served whole and fileted for you. Etc. However, many fish and appetizers are done better than usual at Kellari Taverna for a price that is less than the hot spots. The restaurant is attractive. (This time the noise was minimal because we ate there at 10PM, but usually it is less noisy than most competitors.) You can go to Milos and spend $300 per couple (with wine), or come here and get your meal for $125 per couple (with wine), and at Killari you will be able to have a conversation, too"

  • "It was just all perfect! Great romantic table, friendly service, delicious food and special champaign and dessert on the house for our anniversary!!!"

  • "The hummus was tasteless...tasteless. One of the easiest and most basic staples of Middle-Eastern dishes. The seafood salad was also tasteless..The fish--also tasteless (they had already run out of the specfial and it was only 6pm. How many red flags did I need?). When the waiter finally came to ask how everything was, I told him the truth. He assured me if I tried the chicken it would be filled with flavor (again, how difficult is it to make a good chicken dish?). The chicken was not flavorful. It was basic. It was "I have a stomach flu and need a basic bland chicken" kind of chicken.. This is Manhattan, people. There are plenty of wonderful restaurants: this is not worth your time. The setting was nice. Convenient location. That's it."

  • "This greek in a convenient mid town location has excellent food and ambience. The lunch prix fixe is a special bargain available year-round!"
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "The food is always good, the staff couldn't be more helpful, w/ the feeling of being rushed."
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "I have been to Kellari many times, so was very disappointed with the food this time. The salmon tartar was overly fishy, the lamb chops overdone, and the veggies were mush. This has never happened before. The service however was fine, and the manager swapped out the fishy salmon for the watercress salad with the soggy figs."
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "This is a great choice for pre theater as they offer a prix fixed dinner and the waiters are very conscience of your show time. That being said...the food offerings are quite good...an authentic Greek restaurant with many choices of fresh fish. I have no complaints except that the location is not convenient to most of the Broadway theaters."

  • "Good food, good service, good wine and appetizers at the bar. Best octopus I have eaten!"
    Dined on 3/24/2014
  • "The food was excellent at this restaurant. I tried the octopus appetizer and it was fantastic! I usually wouldn't have something like this, but I wanted to try something new. It is big enough to split with someone. The lamb chops were very good too. I ordered mine medium and it was cooked pretty close. One lamb chop was a bit rare, but still very tasty (not bloody)."

  • "We were in NY for the weekend and ate from the pre-theatre menu. Food was wonderfu, waiter helpful, service prompt - & amazingly affordable."

  • "Everything delicious, especially the fish of the day blackened tuna appetizer accompanied by the sweetest array of beets. The appetizer shrimp were lovely to look at, but dry and a bit tough. Not a place for a quiet lunch, it's a raucous scene."

  • "We chose this restaurant because of a referral and found many of the reviews were spot on. The service was impeccable. Everything was delivered as ordered and in an appropriate time span. All of the seafood was fresh and cooked perfectly. We tried the grilled octopus appetizer. My wife doesn't eat octopus and has raved about it since our visit. It was the best octopus I think I've ever eaten. The main course was less disappointing, as if that were possible... I don't recall the name, but the seafood over orzo and lobster were both fantastic. I will positively be back and will highly recommend to family and friends."

  • "salad had no taste; spanikopita tasted like something you microwave from the frozen food aisle"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Salads were the only highlight at this restaurant. Service was efficient and perfuntuary, but not friendly. They specialize in greek seafood dishes. Mine was tasty but cooked to the point of dryness around the edges of the fish. We ate late and a staff started setting up tables for the next around us."

  • "We have been dining at Kellari for many years, but brunch was a real treat. Generous, delicious portions, unlimited drink, excellent, friendly service and a jazz string trio. What more could we ask for?"

  • "I love dining at this restaurant because of the delicious food, great service. It is a wonderful place"

  • "I have been to Kellari's in Washington DC, so I booked an early reservation for the Manhattan restaurant for pre-theatre dinner. Good thing the reservation was early. Once seated, we were delivered bread, olives and hummus by an assistant. However, no waiter ever came to greet us, take a drink order or provide a wine list. After about 20 minutes, I got up from the table to mention something to a manager who was standing around talking to someone else on the staff. Service was slow though out the meal. We ordered saganaki (flaming cheese appetizer) which had a long, noticeable black hair in it. It was replaced without fanfare. The 'regular' customers sitting next to us also had problems with their order."

  • "I have been at this restaurant for dinner. I order the Spankiopta for an appetizer. It was delicious. For my entre I had the salmon which was on a bed of beats and leeks. The salmon was cooked perfectly. I also had a delicious dry greek wine by the glass. They had a trio playing music which was delightful. I would definitely go back again."

  • "I have continued to visit this place each time I visit NYC, since 2004. The food and service are great, casual and vibrant atmosphere, conveniently located in midtown not far from Grand Central. The grilled octopus is excellent starter (big portion to share) or as a main meal (with a side to add). Mezze platter is great. Always an excellent selection of seafood. I also enjoy the varied selection of Greek wines on the menu, something different from the standard New World/Old World selection. It's nothing fancy but the food is consistently great and a change of pace from other options. Reservations highly recommended but for 2 people, there are usually options to sit at the bar counter if you don't mind that option."

  • "We went there for lunch/pre-matinee. Shared several meals - all were mediocre at best. Crabcake was dry, goat cheese, fig combo was too sweet and the pita served with it was not quite fresh, Greek French Toast was way too fried and sweet. The Spanikota was OK - the best of the four."
