Executive chef Keiko Takahashi, formerly of Michelin starred El Paseo in Mill Valley, returns with her delicate flavors and beautiful presentation to Nob Hill, San Francisco. In 2013, 2014 guide, another Michelin star was awarded.
Please join us for the 2014 May Tasting Menu for $145 per person, by using 'the finest' food material such as seasonal top end Tsukiji market fish, A5 Wagyu Beef.

The presentation of each little dish was beautiful. The restaurant was quiet and intimate. Tables were not on top of each other and the service was very good. The chef executed the menu perfectly and 80% of the dishes in the menu were above average. The combination of flavors and ingredients were top notch. Read the reviews and I guess the dinner menu we had was not my preference (although I ate everything) I felt that I could have gotten some better food quality fish for half the price at good sushi place in town."

  • "We were fortunate to get reservations at this small, delightful restaurant during our short stay in the City. We had heard about it from friends and acquaintances and both Zagat and Michelin praised it. All that came up short, compared with our perfect evening. We were welcome at the bar and had to wait a few minutes for our table, so we enjoyed a lovely rose champagne and chatted with the very knowledgeable sommelier. We were seated at the best table (although there is no bad table in the dining room) and started with the chef's amuse-bouche. The daily creation, the chef's degustation menu, was spectacular. we were pampered, despite my wife's multiple food allergies. A quiet place where you can talk, delight in amazing food and wine. Wow!"

  • "This had to be the most overpriced meal we have ever had.. We've been to a number of the many course tasting menu highly rated restaurants both in SF and abroad,. Usually there are a few dishes that you truly wish came in bigger portions.. Not so here.. Wouldn't really need to eat any of them again.. They were all okay , but nothing exceptional.. As the staff will keep telling you, the ingredients are all the very best and are all from Japan. The restaurant itself is really lovely.. quiet, comfortable.."

  • "Having followed Keiko and Seigo to SF from Mill Valley, their recent change in menu and focus is another amazing step in culinary exploration. We brought some friends from Switzerland during their soft opening of the new concept & menu. We were so impressed with Keiko's exquisite taste profiles and presentations along with Seigo's amazing wine (and sake!) selections to go with the food. It truly was out-of-this-world. While the pricing has gone up with this change in concept, it is well worth it. The ingredients they source are exceptional and having fewer covers a night allows for an even greater level of personal service and interaction. The Kobe beef course was the best meat course all of us had ever enjoyed. A night to remember."

  • "The ounce or two of kobe they served was more tender than any filet I've had, yet more flavorful than a porterhouse. Words cannot do it justice. The meal was seafood-heavy, the various sashimi pieces all exceptional. My only complaint is the mediocre sommelier. The wines he chooses are good wines, but I've never met a professional sommelier this bad at pairing with food. It does a disservice to the delicious dishes."

  • "This is truly a whole evening event. Dinner started at 7:30 and we didn't finish until 11:00. The time between each dish seem long at times. They recently changed their serving process, they now have one setting a night, at 7:30, and everyone is served the at the same time. As the menu indicates, it's a tasting menu so you get one to two bits of each dish, with everyone getting the same thing. Also, you need to make sure you are willing to try many different types of food because many of the dishes are very unique. Overall, the experience was very different from anything I have ever done."

  • "The food itself was actually very good and distinctive. But several things kinda marred the experience for me: -The fact that it's prix fixe, and that they would physically bring out a piece of uncooked meat in an attempt to entice you into paying extra for it...that just felt wrong. -The portions were small. It's expected that a michelin level restaurant would portion their courses appropriately so that one reaches a decent level of satiation upon the completion of the meal, but I was surprised to find that something was lacking by the end. -When selecting the wine, I agreed to a suggestion of the waiter, who then replied "well, that was easy." Regardless of the intent of that phrase, it was in poor taste and was a bit off putting."

  • "Excellent food in a very traditional quiet white linen atmosphere. Cozy and romantic. 7 dishes including desserts were delicious. Quite elegant and unique presentation, and their decorative plates and small utensils enhanced my eating experience. Though 3 course desserts were a bit much.   • "This is small gem of a restaurant at the top of knob hill. There were only a handful of tables in a Victorian setting with what appeared to be Lalique crystal chandeliers and wall sconces. The food matched the ambiance. If you are not a fan of Japanese food you would be better dining elsewhere. The entire meal was reminiscent of our recent trip to Sapporo. The menu started as upscale Japanese then became more French. The traditionally French cheese course was turned on its head with a delicious cheese foam and expresso foam! We chose a 1979 Chateau D'Ssan Margaux from their extensive wine list to accompany our meal. We look forward to returning whenever we visit San Francisco."

  • "Everything was great, except for the $8 each bottled water. We're asked sparking or still water. We said just regular water. We started talking not noticing that they're pouring us bottled water. Finally we noticed it, so we didn't ask for more water. A waiter opened another bottle, even when we had plenty of water in our glasses. We quickly told him no. 4 bottles of water were on our bill, including the last bottle that we did not ask for and did not drink. Bad form…Put a damper on our good experience."

  • "Booked Keiko for an early dinner before the SF Ballet Opening Gala night. Told them we needed to leave by 7:30 over the phone before. They remembered and were great about timing everything. It didn't feel rushed but we still got our early. Food was FABULOUS! We love French and we love Japanese, so Keiko was the perfect blend of the two. The Wagyu beef add-on was DIVINE, perfect size, prepared perfectly, and totally worth it. The shaved truffle add-on could be skipped (can't compare to the truffle at French Laundry). Portions were perfect, wasn't stuffed but was satisfied. Presentation beautiful. Preparation meticulous and delicate. Price reasonable. This is hands-down my new favorite restaurant in SF."

  • "Thought the place was fabulous on our first visit a year ago. This time it was good, but not great. A few of the flavor/texture combinations didn't work for us, though the chef is very gifted overall. Service was attentive but not warm. With the expensive wine pairings, high-priced truffle and kobe offered, and impending doubling of menu prices, I get the impression that this restaurant now wants to earn money on status-conscious extravagant spenders rather than real foodies. Had chosen this restaurant in hopes of having a quiet conversation, but the party just behind me was quite loud, to the point where I often couldn't hear the person across the table from me. We probably just got unlucky with an unusually loud patron near us."

If you want to throw your money away, then this is your place. Keiko's does not belong in the top 10. Once was enough. There are better restaurants in SF with GREAT food and you don't need to bring the bank!"

  • "1) not obvious when booking it is prix fixe only. initially they were not wiling to substitute or double another dish. however the chef's husband saved the meal and fixed this and got a substitute. 2) bad wine service - took forever to get wine. however this service improved tremendously toward the middle/end of meal. if only we could have gotten wine before the first dish we would rate higher. 3) food was amazing and very different and incredible. so the issues we experienced are very easy ones the restaurant fixed while we were there and should try to ensure don't happen for others as this place is very good. The chef's husband is awesome and really saved the night."

  • "We were very fortunate to be able to obtain a late night reservation just as Keiko reopened after the break. We were very enthused with the selection of wines. The food was unexcelled any where in San Fran. We travel to San Fran each year at New Years for about two weeks. We will be making our first reservation at Keiko when we return next year. David and the other service were awesome to deal with and made our visit very memorable. The owner talked about the wines and the history of his selection of wines. We feel it is worth the trip just to indulge in the wonderful wines on site."

  • "We were there on Christmas Eve, so they were only serving us and three other couples in the small, very cozy front room. It was like being in an elegant home. There were lots of inventive little surprises and new tastes along the way e.g. cauliflower puree with caviar...and two and a half hours went by quickly. The wine steward was as entertaining as he was proficient."

  • "I was surprised to discover this well hidden gem of a refined restaurant. Each dish in tasting menu is elegantly prepared to perfection. The art of blending a myriad of flavors is often difficult to perform but is captured beautifully here by Chef Keiko. Each dish is subtle yet complex. Technique wise, the chef uses a nice blend of molecular gastronomy with French sensibility. The wine list is filled with older vintages though I would like to see a larger choice at a reasonable price point. The service is excellent and the overall atmosphere is upscale, refined, and quiet. This is an ideal small refined restaurant that I highly recommend."

  • "They had a fixed menu for Christmas eve. The food was very nice, but I'm not sure how to gauge a $195/person meal. Of course the food tasted great and the service was great. But I suppose those are expected for the price (or maybe I'm just a pleb who isn't used to aristocracy). I would go again on a regular day to check out their normal menu. If $$ are not a concern, well worth the Michelin star."

  • "Keiko serves a Japanese-French style cuisine, more on the Japanese side. Fixed menu was inepensive (95$) and consisted of 6 courses. They offer a 3oz Waygu add on for $65. Food was excellent in taste, presentation and variety. We didn't order the Waygu but either offering additional dishes, charging more and serving larger portions or sdditional dishes would be nice.The 6 courses were enough for some but not for most of us."

  • "Brought the hubby here for his birthday. When I confirmed the reservation, I asked if they did anything special for birthdays and was told that they did and would make a note on our reservation. They forgot and it was the end of our dinner, so I didn't feel like bringing it up. Other than that, the food and service was excellent. Small portions, but left feeling satisfied. Spent more than I thought I would. Would skip the water since they charge $8.50/person, but would definitely pay extra for the Wagyu again. That dish was one of my favorites."

  • "We ate food we'd never tried before. Uni. Wagyu beef. Nasturtium. Sesame butter on a fig. All excellent and all beautifully presented. The attentive and exceptionally intelligent service was just right. Very comfortable place without any stuffiness. Would go back, but will have to save up a little. Thank you!"
