A word from Kefi
Chef Michael Psilakis and partner Donatella Arpaia have moved their rustic Greek gem, Kefi, to a larger space at 505 Columbus Avenue. The new, 200-seat interior evokes the feeling of a palatial Greek hideaway broken up into several smaller dining rooms to keep Kefi’s intimate appeal.

The menu of favorites straight from Psilakis’ childhood will remain the same with some new additions. Signature dishes like Baccala, crispy-fried cod with garlic potatoes and tomato, Grilled Octopus with bean salad, and Hilopita, baked pasta with rabbit ragout and béchamel are still on offer. Additions include Grilled Sardines with chopped “Greek Salad” and garlic sauce, Macaronia Spestofai, tubular pasta with Greek sausage, peppers, onions, tomato and feta and an entirely new section of Greek Sandwiches featuring house-made sausages and pork and lamb gyro. • "I had an unexpected bad surprise. The food was really mediocre and overly priced. I did not enjoy my meal at all and had the same feedback from my guests with one exception: the bulgur salad: is THAT even GREEK??? Nothing too Greek about it that too was disappointing. I asked about "spinach pie" a staple of Greek cuisine: nothing of the kind is on the menu. Advice: don't expect authentic Greek food which is what this place very much pretends to deliver."

  • "Priced well for the food quality. Service was outstanding."

  • "We used to eat here a lot before they shut down due to flooding last year and returned for the first time since they reopened...not impressed. Even though we had a reservation, we still had to wait 30 minutes for a table, the servers seemed overwhelmed and the food was bland at best."

  • "We got there 5 minutes early for our 8:45 res and were told by the harried looking woman at the front to give her a minute. Not a surprise since to even reach her, we had to fight our way thru tons of waiting ppl. Did not get seated until 9:05. There were so many people with reservations who were waiting that they had to bring out some shots to try and placate them. once seated we ordered right away since we had plenty of time to decide during our long wait. 40 minutes later no appetizers. Flagged down the waiter who looked surprised and asked us -- you mean noone brought your appetizers? uh no and if you were doing your job properly, you would have known this. Anyway food not amazing enough to compensate for wait and dismal service."

  • "Great food, good value, nice Greek wind list. Downstairs you can talk to one another instead of scream. Get the dumplings and Paella and anything with shrimp and or sausage. Good service and friendly people. Highly recommended during the week, it might be louder and more chaotic during the peak weekends."

  • "I love their food but will only go lunchtime because the din at night ruins the food."

  • "Kefi is even better since they reopened (same place). The food is out of this world. We each had several small plates. The meatballs with tzaziki were spectacular. Never had a light and fluffy meatball before. It was like cutting into a hot gougere or cream puff. I am ruined for meatballs - they all must be light like Kefi's. Delicious. Ate aLL my pita, and I normally only eat whole wheat or multi-grain. Irresistable. Brussels sprouts were wonderful with a little lemon zest. Cannot recommend it enough!"

  • "Staff was very friendly. Food was excellent as was the wine we ordered. Price was very reasonable. We were lucky to be placed downstairs where it is not as crowded. All in All, a very good dining experience."

  • "Always enjoy the food at Kefi, but the service usually is not very good and even with a reservation you wait for a long time for a table. Not true this last visit. Food was good, got seated 5 minutes after reservation time, and had a great waiter who remembered everything."

  • "Good food in an ugly room with bad lighting that makes it feel like a cafeteria."

  • "Have been here before many times - it's a go-to neighborhood spot for a light dinner. This time was sub-par. The service was terrible (and i have a lot of patience), our glasses of wine didn't come until halfway through our first course, i was told they ran out of my entree 30 minutes after we ordered, and we saw our waitress maybe twice the whole night. The food was still good - the back of the house is in order, but it's the front with the issues."

  • "we dined at the recently renovated Kefi on a Saturday night. we had a reservation but waited about 20 minutes for our table. ONce seated, we were given a complimentary appetizer of a variety of spreads ti make up for the wait. we all thought that was a very nice thing to do. The spreads were all quite nice and the other starters we had, fried calamari and a special salad were also good. Our entress were uneven. I had simply grilled fish which was nicely filleted but was not hot enough and didn't come with anything. Another entree also came out cold, but the majority of the dishes were fine and very tasty. If you eat there, ask to be seated downstairs, upstairs if very noisy"

  • "What a great local restaurant. The beet salad was refreshing and tasty, the sea bas with brussels sprouts was crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside, the hangar steak was tender and cooked to perfection. And even though very crowded, service was attentive and helpful and friendly. It could not have been any better. I'll come back here every time I get to NYC."

  • "Very friendly service on recent visit. Excellent food. Meatballs are a must for appetizers. Salads good too. Spread plate was OK. Had very good fresh fish for entree. Major bottleneck on way out. Somewhat chaotic. Design is nothing to speak of but you don't eat the design! Go for food, fun and value."

  • "good Greek - not great - fair service - be prepared for a brutal noise level and being packed in like a sardine"

  • "This was a fantastic find. It is large over 2 full levels with 3 distinct areas each with a different feel. We sat downstairs. The food was very well done and we had a great night. The wine is all Greek so we did need some help choosing but the waiter was spot on with his recommendation. Will definitely be back for more great Greek."

  • "Ive been eating here for years. I especially love the mussels and salads, and even though I'm a Starbucks fan I think their cappachino is delicious."

  • "The food is very good and the specials are great. The noise level is uncomfortable, very uncomfortable and the tables are so close together, that our waiter had to pass plates to me to serve my companion and myself."

  • "We had a lovely lunch. Prices seemed on par with New York. The bread was great. The Calamari was delicious light crunchy not chewy or greasy. The Kefi Salad was very good. The Branzino was a huge portion and delicious. The Michael's Lamb Burger was huge outstandingly spiced, on a ciabatta bun with Kefi Salad and fries. The Spicy Kopanisti sauce wasn't my taste but it was on the side. The Rigatoni with Greek Sausage, Peppers & Onions, Tomato and Feta was a different story. The pasta was fine the sauce and vegetables were good as well. The Greek Sausage was very dry. My husband just picked out the pieces of sausage. All in all we had a good meal. This restaurant was not far from the American Natural History Museum about 5 blcks."

  • "It had been several years since we visited Kefi. Ate here around 5pm on a Saturday evening after a NY Philharmonic matinee. The place was PACKED (including many families with young kids). Service from waitstaff was slow and spotty (took ages to get 1 round of drinks - and this was before the place filled up, we never got our dessert, etc.), though service from the kitchen was swift, so no complaints there. And the food was just as terrific as we remembered. But, the ambiance is more frenetic than we remember (they reconfigured the dining room to fit in more tables, it seems). We'd go back mid-week if we were ever in the area, but Im not sure we'd go back on a weekend due to the slow service and tables being too close together."

  • "I had a delicious hanger steak with broccoli rabe and cauliflower soup at Kefi. They have great lunch specials, but their dinner menu is really extensive. I would suggest making a reservation. My father had the striped bass, which he said was great but didn't compare to the hanger steak."

  • "The pita used was toasted and very dry. When we arrived there was plenty of tables available yet they tried to seat at the worst possible table."

  • "The food is consistently great at Kefi, it's a vibrant place and gets very loud."

  • "The food is amazing! Really crowded and much too loud but staff is friendly and everything that comes out of the kitchen is delicious. My only complaint about the menu is there is no baklava. Disappointing for a good Greek restaurant but I'll live and definitely keep going back."

  • "Requested a table downstairs to avoid the noise. When restaurant called on Friday to re-confirm, I again asked for a table downstairs and was informed that there would be no problem. Arrived at restaurant for reservation on Saturday and was informed that it would not be possible to seat us downstairs. If this happens again, I will not return. Additionally, it took 10 minutes from the time our entrees were brought to the table until the side dish was delivered. Usually dont have a problem with this restaurant but last Saturday was clearly an exception."

  • "When family or friends come to town, I tend to take them to Kefi. The menu is diverse enough to satisfy everyone and the food is terrific. Also, they've accommodated groups of my friends in the past. I'm incredibly happy they're open again."

  • "I have been there after a long period, hoping to get the same delicious treat I got before. It must have been a night out of focus for the kitchen crew: octopus was kind of char and bitter while chewing, feta cheese was sparse and not particularly tasty. Pita sandwich was OKish but fries were underwhelming. Tzatziki was tasty. The service was attentive and the overall bill definitely low for that standard of restaurant in UWS. Do not get me wrong: the quality is still far better than other known food sanctuaries in the area, but something was off. I have to try again. Anyway, welcome back Kefi."

  • "Kefi is back! The once great UWS Greek restaurant was closed for a year or more, then seemed very disorganized when it reopened, with sluggish, even glacial service. The problems seem largely to have been corrected. The food remains excellent, the noise level high, and the service hit or miss."

  • "We went during restaurant week and we were 15 minutes late for our reservation. The restaurant was very crowded but the hostesses were nice and they were able to seat us in a very reasonable amount of time. The bar was busy and it took a while to order a drink but everyone was pleasant and happy. We were a party of 4 girlfriends with a lot of special requests. We were working with the restaurant week menu and our waitress Cindy was very helpful and guided all our picky eaters through the menu. Service was great and so was the food. I definitely will be back!"

  • "I've given Kefi so many chances and it still drops the ball, the food is so over salted that both tables on either side of us complained! i have mentioned to them when it first opened that the food was too salty and its obvious to me that the chef smokes (as a former chef i know that those taste buds aren't as sensitive to smokers after working for many) the food was barely room temp, not hot and the service was delayed while we only had meses the people next to us got food before us but sat after us. Wine glass came to table dripping of wine making a puddle, I've given it maybe 6 tries and I'm done, I don't get why its so crowded if you ask people would probably realize they need a new chef and better service. Sorry, i'm done"

  • "After having a similar experience the last time I was here, I decided to give it another try because my sister was in town and was craving greek. The meal was great until we paid the check and were just finishing our drinks and the manager had the audacity to ask us to leave and go to the bar..... EXCUSE ME? we just paid for overpriced greek food and you are asking us to go to the bar when we each have half a drink left? Needless to say the staff is rude and I will not be going back."
