A word from Kefi
Chef Michael Psilakis and partner Donatella Arpaia have moved their rustic Greek gem, Kefi, to a larger space at 505 Columbus Avenue. The new, 200-seat interior evokes the feeling of a palatial Greek hideaway broken up into several smaller dining rooms to keep Kefi’s intimate appeal.

The menu of favorites straight from Psilakis’ childhood will remain the same with some new additions. Signature dishes like Baccala, crispy-fried cod with garlic potatoes and tomato, Grilled Octopus with bean salad, and Hilopita, baked pasta with rabbit ragout and béchamel are still on offer. Additions include Grilled Sardines with chopped “Greek Salad” and garlic sauce, Macaronia Spestofai, tubular pasta with Greek sausage, peppers, onions, tomato and feta and an entirely new section of Greek Sandwiches featuring house-made sausages and pork and lamb gyro. Diner Reviews
  • "The food was great, however we didn't notice that in fact it would be cheaper to order the same menu items withiut the restaurant week menu, which is unacceptable. Also in spite of having reservation we had to wait over 10 min for our table and were sitted on the bottom floor in an ugly room that felt like a cheap hotel dining room. They shouldn't even have this room- bad design, bad acustics, no natural light."

  • "We visited Kefi for the first time because of NYC Restaurant Week. This place has 3 different eating areas. We were seated promptly at the lower level, which would have benefitted from additional air conditioning. One of the 3 of us wanted to order from the prix fix menu, but wasn't allowed to do so unless one other person also ordered from that menu. The service was attentive, though too attentive for my needs. When plates are removed from the table before others in your party are finished eating, it gives you the message that they want you out of the restaurant as soon as possible. The food is prepared well, but there are many Greek restaurants that have comparable food. If you don't live in the neighborhood, don't go out of your way."

  • "Walked into a mob scene as we passed the bar to the go to the hostess. She was confused and had to get help to figure out where to seat us. Wow was it noisy and crowded. We actually pointed to an empty table and we were reluctantly seated there. The server was a dud. Overworked, confused, apologetic. She never asked us what we wanted to drink. When we finally requested wine and waited for 20 minutes, had to get up to find her, she told us that they were out of glasses. Are you kidding me! The manager finally came over and we were given a free glass of wine. Really now. Food was good. Bad experience. Not worth the time or effort. There are many Greek and Turkish restaurants that make you feel welcome. This was not one of them."

  • "The food did not taste good and the service was poor. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "They maintain a consistently high level. The mussels gigante are one of my favorites. Also the Cypriot salad was excellent."

  • "I was part of a family of 3. We all loved everything we ate. Would definitely go back."

  • "The food was excellent -- especially the octopus salad and the meatballs -- but the restaurant wasn't as chic as it appeared in the photos on its website. Also, my boyfriend ordered wine and the first glass he was served had gone bad, so he had to ask for another one. I think I'll get take-out next time..."

  • "The food was average - Our waiter was friendly and very efficient. Would recommend for a group as the service was quick and pleasant."

  • "This was my 2nd time going to Kefi with my wife, and it never fails to disappoint. We ordered the Crispy Calamari and Grilled Octopus & Bean Salad for appetizers, and Hanger Steak and Sheep Milk Dumplings for entrees. Suffice to say, we ended up stuffed and satisfied. The service was on point. They refilled our water bottle every so often. The atmosphere was energetic. Overall, it was an excellent experience as usual. A++"

  • "Kefi is an almost perfect restaurant for me - the food was amazing, the scene was bustling, prices reasonable, but I was still able to get a Sat night reservation the day before. Our server was a bit inattentive (we got our apps before our cocktails, had to ask for the bread, and waited awhile for the check) but other tables around us were getting fine service. All in, we would go back and we would take friends there."

  • "It was a fun place with an energetic atmosphere. Food was great. Meatballs seasoned very well. Mixed grill was excellent and done to perfection. With not knowing what to expect, it was a great surprise. We will be going back!"

  • "The food was good, but it was loud and warm, never a good combination. Two of us ordered different kinds of beer and they were both warm. The servers brought the wrong food twice. Other than that it was great!"

  • "The food was ok, but not great. The wait staff was friendly, but the bus staff needs more training. They are constantly grabbing plates from the table if you are finished with your meal, making you feel hurried and unwelcome."

  • "so go for lunch. The mussels are great and the salads excellent."

  • "air conditioning was on way too high--i was freezing and kept asking them to lower it but i didn't notice any change so it was a little uncomfortable. food was delicious and i probably would have stayed longer and eaten more if it hadn't been so freezing."

  • "Consistently great & affordable Greek food. It gets better every year! Inventive, tasty salads and entrees as well as traditional, straight-forward Greek dishes that don't miss. And absolutely the MOST tender, melt-in-your-mouth grill octopus I've ever had."

  • "DELICIOUS and affordable Greek food. So glad I finally tried this place, I'll definitely be coming back"

  • "our first visit since the re-opening. food was better than ever. all four fish main dishes were great. had the butterflied branzini. look forward to our next visit."

  • "The food was as great as ever, but the service was ridiculously rushed. Our appetizers were served within 3 minutes of placing the order. The main entrees came out immediately after our appetizer plates were cleared. Thought the food is terrific, I felt as though we were in a fast food restaurant."

  • "The servers accommodated us by placing us on the first floor by request (we had a girl with a broken ankle). The food arrived very promptly, and in very decent portions. The flavors were beautiful, we loved every bit. The waitress was very attentive as well."

  • "My husband and I have been going to Kefi for years and it never disappoints. The braised rabbit is one of my husband's favorite dishes of all time. Great quality at a reasonable price."

  • "I took my parents here based upon online reviews and they were really happy to learn of this neighborhood treat. The rabbit and flat pasta was amazing, the lamb chops were tender, and the seafood was delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone. P.S. Gents, I saw quite a few dates at Kefi, so add it to your list."

  • "Food at Kefi is great: branzino is flaky and flavorful; shrimp in the orzo are giant and succulent . Service can be choppy."
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "Loved the seafood. Fresh and well prepared. I've seldom had octopus that tender. If you are looking for uber-thought out sauces with hints and touches of everything, go somewhere else. If good quality, fresh food prepared beautifully, cooked correctly and is just delicious is what you want, you are in the right place."

  • "This was a good find in the UWS neighbourhood. We enjoyed the food very, very much. I liked the antipasti. We ordered octopus and pork. The lamb was good too but not the best that I've tried. Fish was amazing. I wanna try the lamb skillet when I go back."

  • "This is our favorite UWS restaurant! I wrote another review last month, but on the heels of yet another WONDERFUL meal and amazing service, I just had to shout out again that KEFI is terrific and 'Rocks'. It just keeps getting better and better. You won't be disappointed."

  • "Some of the best Greek food I've had in recent memory at quite reasonable prices. The service is competent and friendly. The restaurant is needlessly noisy due to tile-lined walls but it's not unbearable."

  • "The food would qualify as what passes in Athens (Greece) as Greek food for tourists. So this is not a place to taste well-prepared Greek food ("authentic," experimental," or any sort of "fusion"). Definitely not a place for foodies. Good for groups, though, who care more about the company than the food. The service was good."

  • "the server was very helpful, the food was delicious. We shared a variety of appetizers and the branzini was fantastic. great restaurant with good prices. they also have a downstairs area where you can have parties or big groups."

  • "It's like having simple but great Greek food erratically served on the IRT. Deafening ambiance, distracted waiters, but good cooking if you can take the din with your dinner."
    Dined on 7/1/2014
  • "The food and drinks were fabulous, as always. Our appetizers (the wonderful spreads and octopus) came out very quickly so my husband asked the waitress to slow the meal down. Before we even finished the appetizers, someone came out of the kitchen with our dinners. We sent them back. In the next minute, they cleared our appetizers and tried to deliver the same plates again. We sent them back again. Called the waitress over and told her to wait at least 10-15 minutes and re-fire the dishes. She finally got the point. Next time I wouldn't order everything at once unless they prove to me they can slow it down cause it makes you annoyed and harder to enjoy their really really good food! Drinks are fun too."

  • "I came here with my family and loved it. The food was very healthy with options to have gluten free bread. The kids menu was great - all healthy (no deep fried nuggets etc). We loved our meals snd will be back!"

  • "The rare upper west side eatery which is affordable for the whole family. You can get everything from a salad to a sandwich to full meal, with most entrees under $20. Kid-friendly items like mac & cheese are included. The place is huge, with another whole floor of seating beneath the main floor. It's not "haute cuisine" by any stretch--they use iceberg lettuce for salads, e.g.--but, for the price, it's fine."
