A word from Kefi
Chef Michael Psilakis and partner Donatella Arpaia have moved their rustic Greek gem, Kefi, to a larger space at 505 Columbus Avenue. The new, 200-seat interior evokes the feeling of a palatial Greek hideaway broken up into several smaller dining rooms to keep Kefi’s intimate appeal.

The menu of favorites straight from Psilakis’ childhood will remain the same with some new additions. Signature dishes like Baccala, crispy-fried cod with garlic potatoes and tomato, Grilled Octopus with bean salad, and Hilopita, baked pasta with rabbit ragout and béchamel are still on offer. Additions include Grilled Sardines with chopped “Greek Salad” and garlic sauce, Macaronia Spestofai, tubular pasta with Greek sausage, peppers, onions, tomato and feta and an entirely new section of Greek Sandwiches featuring house-made sausages and pork and lamb gyro. Diner Reviews
  • "This is our favorite UWS restaurant! I wrote another review last month, but on the heels of yet another WONDERFUL meal and amazing service, I just had to shout out again that KEFI is terrific and 'Rocks'. It just keeps getting better and better. You won't be disappointed."

  • "Always a great meal at reasonable prices...had the spread appetizer, sea bass, raviolis and pappardelle pasta... all delicious."

  • "Great salads, attentive service, conversational for lunch"

  • "We had a wonderful meal (the cypriot sausage is superb) and great drinks the issue was that our appetizers came fairly quickly and then we had an hour and 20 minute wait for our mains, I think we just happened to have walked in and landed right after a huge rush. They were incredibly courteous and knocked all our drinks and deserts of the tab as recompense, but it still was not ideal."

  • "the server was very helpful, the food was delicious. We shared a variety of appetizers and the branzini was fantastic. great restaurant with good prices. they also have a downstairs area where you can have parties or big groups."

  • "Some of the best Greek food I've had in recent memory at quite reasonable prices. The service is competent and friendly. The restaurant is needlessly noisy due to tile-lined walls but it's not unbearable."

  • "The food would qualify as what passes in Athens (Greece) as Greek food for tourists. So this is not a place to taste well-prepared Greek food ("authentic," experimental," or any sort of "fusion"). Definitely not a place for foodies. Good for groups, though, who care more about the company than the food. The service was good."

  • "It's like having simple but great Greek food erratically served on the IRT. Deafening ambiance, distracted waiters, but good cooking if you can take the din with your dinner."

  • "Kefi has been consistently good for years, and they don't mess with a good thing."

  • "The food and drinks were fabulous, as always. Our appetizers (the wonderful spreads and octopus) came out very quickly so my husband asked the waitress to slow the meal down. Before we even finished the appetizers, someone came out of the kitchen with our dinners. We sent them back. In the next minute, they cleared our appetizers and tried to deliver the same plates again. We sent them back again. Called the waitress over and told her to wait at least 10-15 minutes and re-fire the dishes. She finally got the point. Next time I wouldn't order everything at once unless they prove to me they can slow it down cause it makes you annoyed and harder to enjoy their really really good food! Drinks are fun too."

  • "I came here with my family and loved it. The food was very healthy with options to have gluten free bread. The kids menu was great - all healthy (no deep fried nuggets etc). We loved our meals snd will be back!"

  • "Everything about our dining experience at Kefi was awesome. I had bronzino…whole fish, simply grilled,….superb Will surely return."

  • "The rare upper west side eatery which is affordable for the whole family. You can get everything from a salad to a sandwich to full meal, with most entrees under $20. Kid-friendly items like mac & cheese are included. The place is huge, with another whole floor of seating beneath the main floor. It's not "haute cuisine" by any stretch--they use iceberg lettuce for salads, e.g.--but, for the price, it's fine."

  • "Everything on the menu is a taste treat. The octopus is mouth watering. Kefi is a gem in the Upper West Side"

  • "I have not been here for a while and my experience was very different from when I was here a year or more ago. The tables are crammed so close together it is extremely uncomfortable and very noisy. Another annoyance, a pet peeve of mine, is that I reserved a table, confirmed it with them and yet was asked to wait until 'the rest of my party', i.e. one other person, arrived before they would seat me. Probably won't be back. It's a shame because I used to love it."

  • "Keffi was one of my favorites greek in NYC , but las 2 times has being deceiving . Very bad service and the food is not helping. The only thing is that is inexpensive"

  • "I love good food and good restaurants, but Kefi is not one. My strongest suggestion, if you still want to try it, is to sit upstairs. Downstairs has no vibe, except of one where they herd in their guests, feed them poorly seasoned food, and get them out. It took nearly an hour to get our appetizers, then we were informed they were out of the dumplings (the reason we went there), and another long wait for good quality lamb chops, ruined from under seasoning and over-grilling. The huge party of tour groups way in the back seemed to be having fun... But we didn't."

  • "Tee food is excellent and the prices very reasonable for NYC standards. The location is very vribant in Columbus Ave. I tried the beer from Cyprus "Keo" for the first time and liked it very much. Will definitely visit again in the near future."

  • "Kefi is always consistent, great food, terrific Greek wines! The meatballs are so delicious and the Branzino...always outstanding! If you want fresh, delicious fish, Kefi is your go-to place. For dessert, the Greek yogurt with honey and fruit transports you back to Santorini! Soooo happy you are back after a too long absence. A neighborhood gem!"

  • "Good food, friendly servers, lovely space but the noise level made it impossible to have a conversation."

  • "Good Greek neighborhod restaurant -- reasonable for NY - spreads are good but a little sparse -- branzino good -- sausage very spicy -- very noisy & busy"

  • "I had dinner with six people at Kefi. After a bit of a rocky start (tried seating us at a table that literally bumped against the kitchen door, requiring a few minutes of stubbornness to rectify) we had an excellent meal. The standard grilled octopus was a cut above the norm, large and tender with a nice charred flavor but not burned. Prices were great, quite a value for a Manhattan (rather than Astoria) Greek."

  • "Service was attentive and responsive however they insisted on having us order appetizers and main course at the same time. Then main course was served on heels of appetizer. Very rushed. Fish was cooked well but had little taste and the tomato/vege mix that they served it on was too heavy and overpowered fish. Octopus salad was delicious. Dip sampler was very good. Very noisy. Not easy to have table conversation. Wouldn't rush back."

  • "We were a party of nine and, as all large parties are, were seated in the downstairs dining room. Fortunately this space is light and has high ceilings. We proceeded to order a variety of appetizers to share, all delicious. The entrees were all satisfying as well, ranging from salads to eggs to fish. All ingredients were very fresh. The wait staff was attentive. Stay away from the Bloody Mary's. Two were ordered and two were returned! We did not have coffee or dessert here as this was planned for another location. We have been to this restaurant before and have not been disappointed."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Food is very good, and quite reasonably priced for quality and portion size. The whole Branzino was offered whole or butterflied, a bit over oiled, but excellent with a good broccoli rabe side. You must be willing to endure a very cramped and noisy environment to enjoy Kefi's delicious offerings."

  • "We are new, UWS pied-a-terres and all I can say is "WOW"!!! We've eaten at KEFI twice and the food and service are outstanding. Our waiter, Rock, 'rocked', and we can't wait to head back to NYC and enjoy another fabulous dinner at KEFI. If you've never dined there, you are definitely missing one of Upper West Side's best. So....Go and Enjoy."

  • "Now that it is re-opened from prior water main damage, it is fresher and nicer in some ways; yet, we were not quite as impressed as our visits from the past. We were placed in large room in basement that felt a bit like a mess hall absent any real decoration to soften the new tile and noise. We enjoyed a nice appetizer with Sauvignon Blanc. Lamb chops were perfectly grilled paired with a nice cab/syrah blend recommended by the server. Our son dined for lunch recently and loved it too. Service was attentive; yet, somehow felt rushed--I know this is tough balance to maintain. We will be back."

  • "Our second visit in 2 years to Kefi. The waitress, Jessica, was very helpful in choosing food and wine selections. The appetizers of Kefi salad and mussels were excellent. The lemon chicken with potatoes is flavorful, a bit salty, but I don't usually add salt to food. My wife had the ravioli, which was excellent. The rice pudding and walnut cake with ice cream were both very good. We chose the prix fixe, a great value for fine food. We found the cabernet savignon recommended by Jessica to be excellent. Service was excellent. Our major criticism has to do with a high noise level, common now in restaurants, but not ideal for enjoyable dining especially in those of us over 60. Sound-proofing tile in the ceiling should be considered."

  • "My girlfriends and I were a bit overpowered by the bad fish smell in the restaurant. Even the manager knew about the smell. We asked if we were sitting above the garbage and he said no. It was all good except for that….but you don't want a bad fishy, garbage smell when you are eating out."

  • "I've been to Kefi before and it was great, but this time the food was way way too salty and the service was also extremely slow. It took 45 minutes just to get our drinks. I hope I just was there on an off night."

  • "Overall good mid-range place. Wait is sometimes way too long and reservations can be up to 45 minutes late... yes reservations. The floor always looks dirty on the first level, which affects ambiance."

  • "Loved the kefi (Greek) salad... It was delish! The atmosphere was quaint and comfortable and service was good. Half price cocktails for brunch... Also a plus!"

  • "The noise level was a little high and the space was cramped. The food and the price were excellent. I definitely recommend this restaurant and will visit again."

  • "Our meal for 3 a Kefi began with the best mezze since we returned a year ago from Turkey. Our niece loved her swordfish entree, and I found the sheep's milk dumplings with spicy lamb sausage unusual and delicious. My wife reported that her ravioli were also well worth noting. Liked the buzz, and service was very good. Our unhappiness with one wine resulted in a smooth replacement with another."

  • "We visited Kefi before attending an event at Lincoln Center--what a great choice. We can recommend the sheeps milk dumplings with spicy lamb sausage and the Greek style seafood paella-both dreamy good. Add a very pretty dining area and excellent service, with a surprisingly low check--we'll definitely visit Kefi again."
