A word from Kefi
Chef Michael Psilakis and partner Donatella Arpaia have moved their rustic Greek gem, Kefi, to a larger space at 505 Columbus Avenue. The new, 200-seat interior evokes the feeling of a palatial Greek hideaway broken up into several smaller dining rooms to keep Kefi’s intimate appeal.

The menu of favorites straight from Psilakis’ childhood will remain the same with some new additions. Signature dishes like Baccala, crispy-fried cod with garlic potatoes and tomato, Grilled Octopus with bean salad, and Hilopita, baked pasta with rabbit ragout and béchamel are still on offer. Additions include Grilled Sardines with chopped “Greek Salad” and garlic sauce, Macaronia Spestofai, tubular pasta with Greek sausage, peppers, onions, tomato and feta and an entirely new section of Greek Sandwiches featuring house-made sausages and pork and lamb gyro.

Kefi serves creative Greek cuisine in a relaxed, casual setting. The small plates are the strong point; one after the other was delicious, and suited to sharing. Four of us ordered and shared Yayia's Meatballs, Grilled Octopus, Salt Cod, Combination Spreads, and a special bulgar wheat salad with more interesting things in it than I can remember. After that, two "mains" to share; both were good, but not as impressive. Next time, I suspect that we will order more small plates and have Greek "tapas." But there will certainly be a next time. Two hiccups to fix: The red wine was far too warm; we had to put it on ice to cool it down. And our waiter, who was generally nice and helpful, pushed to hard to get us to order wine immediately.

I love Greek food, and Kefi is the best I have found in New York City. I love meze. Everything I've had is good here. I especially like the meatballs with tzaziki, the cauliflower, their pita bread, and the warm feta. Delicious. I highly recommend this place.

This time two of us sprung for the prix fix early dinner menu. Meatballs and mussels appetizers were wonderful. The branzino and potatoes is very special, and what a bargain! The third person is vegan, and the veggies were off the charts good. Try the cauliflower. It is a beautiful surprise. Other times I go for the octopus, or sweetbreads appetizers. Ohmygosh, both are great.

Through my reservation with open table, I asked for a quiet table since someone in my party was hard of hearing. They seated us downstairs at a roomy table in the back. We were near a private party, and a larger group of diners, but our meal was not disturbed because of the good acoustics. Our waiter and the rest of the staff were very attentive. The food was delicious. My only regret was that we did not try more appetizers because of big lunches earlier in the day. I will definitely come back.

Food, especially the early bird prix fixe, is very good. The noise level is quite high and the effect, with the smallish uncomfortable chairs, makes one want to eat [not dine] and get out.

My westsider friend enthusiastically recommended Kefi. I was not as impressed. The Cypriot salad was delicious but that's the only rave I can offer. My chicken souvlaki was fairly tasteless. The bread was hard and we had to ask twice for olive oil for the bread. The noise level on the street level was over the top - happily we were seated downstairs which was quieter.

Living in the neighborhood, I had only ordered Kefi for delivery. I finally ate here the other night and it was even better than takeout. Our waiter was excellent, the food was delicious and though it was extremely busy, it was also lovely and relaxing for a Friday night out. Good stuff Kefi!

Kefi is a neighborhood gem! Go early and sit upstairs, it is very energetic. The downstairs is quieter but not as much fun as upstairs. The food was incredible. Nice ambiance but can be noisy by the front door. The waiter was good until we paid the check and he crassly told us "I have to go tend to my table".Just a minute after we paid the bill, I guess we were chop liver after he got his tip and we were very generous. Some people have no class and he showed his true colors after we ordered 4 appetizers and a couple entrees for two, plus wine. Not cool!

Our group of 7 had a lovely relaxing brunch on Saturday before a visit to the museum. The food was very good and plentiful and the service was attentive. The price was reasonable and everyone walked away full and happy. The mussel appetizer and beet salad was excellent as were the YiaYia meatballs. Shrimp Risotto and the BFT sandwich were big hits as well. The bread and pita were not quite up to par in our opinion but everything else was great.

Last time we ate at Kefi, before the renovation, we were so impressed we recommended it to all of our friends. This time, after making a reservation in advance on Open table we were put in the back room downstairs. THe atmosphere is clearly less inviting than the rest of the restaurant. The food was not impressive, as the greek salad has little interest in flavor and a few old tomatoes thrown in. Souvlaki sandwich with chips was mediocre as was pasta dish. What happened?

Been here many times prior, but now I'm done. Service was never immaculate but pretty good depending on server. This time was atrocious. Our waitress appeared 4 times - taking the order, checking in after got food only to be rude when my sister explained her food was raw & reluctantly exchanging the dish, to plop a bottle of water onto the table but not bothering to refill 3 empty glasses, & to bring the bill. We needed help several times, & literally had to waive our hands in the air for a busboy to reluctantly assist us (got wrong appetizer, needed silverware, etc). Also charged for additional pita (give so little to start) - ABSURD - without mentioning a charge! Found out on bill. Food and price is good, but so many better greek places.

We gave Kefi one last shot but unfortunately we have had 3 sub-par experiences there. The first two times we sat in the main (upstairs) area which was jam-packed and extremely noisy. This last time we were downstairs in the back which was much more spacious and we could hear each other! However the food remained mediocre - spreads were extremely disappointing, dark meat chicken was dry, the only real highlight was the Kefi salad (which we got but had not ordered - with no real explanation as to why) but even so it is a pretty basic Greek salad. Service was erratic and mains were served while appetizers were not yet cleared which created a bit of a scramble. All in all not much to recommend here.

Tender fabulous meatballs, interesting and tasty spreads, filling chicken souvlaki, exquisite lamb chops. Great spot for drinks and appetizers or for a full dinner. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. Located in a happening location on the upper West Side, Kefi is easy to get to on foot, by subway, by car. The poor service ruined it. The food was quite good. The octopus was tender, the sheep milk dumplings were really good but the service was awful. It doesn't seem as the servers and bus boys are trained well. They don't have good hospitality instincts. They don't bring anything extra to the experience. First the waiter was taking our order without writing things down, then he forgot what we asked for and asked us to repeat. Never introduced himself. The water bottle was constantly empty. Never asked if we wanted anything else. The staff did not clear the empty appetizer plates when the entrees came. At the desk there were three hostesses helping one guy with his reservation. Seriously? One of them couldn't say hi to us and get us seated?

Menu highlights are warm feta, crispy calamari, shrimp with orzo. Even just eating several appetizers would be great there. Got the second least expensive bottle of red and loved it. Got a same-day 8pm reservation for 5 people, which is rare in UWS. Attribute that to how large the space is. Downstairs was quieter and cooler than upstairs. I'd been to Kefi for lunch before and found it more pleasant. We went again for dinner on a Wednesday night and it was pretty noisy and hot. The food is great for the price, they have a very good wine list too, and it proved very pleasant for a big family dinner. I wouldn't go here for a romantic dinner or with someone hard of hearing.

Overall a big disappointment. Although my appetizer spreads and entree lamb burger were good, the restaurant overall was not very clean. Tables for two were ridiculously small. In addition, the restaurant is very dingy. We were seated in the basement part of the restaurant which was dismal to say the least yet super crowded and noisy. It could have a better ambiance. The bar was the more brighter and vibrant part of the restaurant. By far the wait staff was horrible, our entree's were served and nothing cleared from the prior course. Difficult to see who was doing what, just too confusing.

You don't have to travel to Astoria or go to a diner for a solid Greek meal. We were greeted warmly and seated in a quiet area of the spacious restaurant. The service was attentive. Large menu, including a variety of specials. We started with the Meze Greek spread which was excellent, served with toasted pita(nb they charged for a refill of this). The yogurt was particularly flavorful. My spinach, feta omelette was cooked perfectly and served in the skillet. My friends salads were copious and tasty. We lingered long after paying the tab and felt welcome. Worth another visit.

The food here is consistently outstanding. The dumplings are out of this world if you're feeling decadent, or a light grilled fish is always delicious & healthy. The wines are just alright, but the bartender mixes a great cocktail. The place is always bustling and can feel a bit packed, but the attention to detail in the food & service excuse the large parties and rows upon rows of tables which can make the experience less than special.
