A word from Kefi
Chef Michael Psilakis and partner Donatella Arpaia have moved their rustic Greek gem, Kefi, to a larger space at 505 Columbus Avenue. The new, 200-seat interior evokes the feeling of a palatial Greek hideaway broken up into several smaller dining rooms to keep Kefi’s intimate appeal.

The menu of favorites straight from Psilakis’ childhood will remain the same with some new additions. Signature dishes like Baccala, crispy-fried cod with garlic potatoes and tomato, Grilled Octopus with bean salad, and Hilopita, baked pasta with rabbit ragout and béchamel are still on offer. Additions include Grilled Sardines with chopped “Greek Salad” and garlic sauce, Macaronia Spestofai, tubular pasta with Greek sausage, peppers, onions, tomato and feta and an entirely new section of Greek Sandwiches featuring house-made sausages and pork and lamb gyro.

Last time we ate at Kefi, before the renovation, we were so impressed we recommended it to all of our friends. This time, after making a reservation in advance on Open table we were put in the back room downstairs. THe atmosphere is clearly less inviting than the rest of the restaurant. The food was not impressive, as the greek salad has little interest in flavor and a few old tomatoes thrown in. Souvlaki sandwich with chips was mediocre as was pasta dish. What happened?

If you're looking for a Gyro or Grape Leaves, keep looking! This place has only the most authentic and traditional greek dishes, all with a twist. We started with lamb meatballs, then my wife had shrimp risotto while I had sheepsmilk dumplings in a spicy red sauce - awesome!

Been here many times prior, but now I'm done. Service was never immaculate but pretty good depending on server. This time was atrocious. Our waitress appeared 4 times - taking the order, checking in after got food only to be rude when my sister explained her food was raw & reluctantly exchanging the dish, to plop a bottle of water onto the table but not bothering to refill 3 empty glasses, & to bring the bill. We needed help several times, & literally had to waive our hands in the air for a busboy to reluctantly assist us (got wrong appetizer, needed silverware, etc). Also charged for additional pita (give so little to start) - ABSURD - without mentioning a charge! Found out on bill. Food and price is good, but so many better greek places.

We gave Kefi one last shot but unfortunately we have had 3 sub-par experiences there. The first two times we sat in the main (upstairs) area which was jam-packed and extremely noisy. This last time we were downstairs in the back which was much more spacious and we could hear each other! However the food remained mediocre - spreads were extremely disappointing, dark meat chicken was dry, the only real highlight was the Kefi salad (which we got but had not ordered - with no real explanation as to why) but even so it is a pretty basic Greek salad. Service was erratic and mains were served while appetizers were not yet cleared which created a bit of a scramble. All in all not much to recommend here.

I'd skip Restaurant Week at Kefi. The entrees came with too much orzo and not enough vegetables. Dessert was minuscule. The regular brunch/lunch menu seemed appealing, but this R.W. meal turned me off. I'd be unlikely to return anytime soon.

Tender fabulous meatballs, interesting and tasty spreads, filling chicken souvlaki, exquisite lamb chops. Great spot for drinks and appetizers or for a full dinner. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. Located in a happening location on the upper West Side, Kefi is easy to get to on foot, by subway, by car. Order a pitcher of sangria to refresh your crowd on a hot summer evening!

One of us had the swordfish and the other had the lemon chicken. Both of us spent the meal cooing about how good the food was. The side order of green beans was also very very good. Cooked to just that right degree. The walnut cake for dessert was good, but nothing special.

The poor service ruined it. The food was quite good. The octopus was tender, the sheep milk dumplings were really good but the service was awful. It doesn't seem as the servers and bus boys are trained well. They don't have good hospitality instincts. They don't bring anything extra to the experience. First the waiter was taking our order without writing things down, then he forgot what we asked for and asked us to repeat. Never introduced himself. The water bottle was constantly empty. Never asked if we wanted anything else. The staff did not clear the empty appetizer plates when the entrees came. At the desk there were three hostesses helping one guy with his reservation. Seriously? One of them couldn't say hi to us and get us seated?

Restaurant was pretty empty and had no ambiance whatsoever. I selected the lunch week $25 menu choices. My white bean soup was tasteless - needed salt & pepper. The main course of shrimp and orzo was OK. Too much orzo & not enough shrimp. Desert was good, except there was supposed to be some halavah on the desert and it was just some tiny tiny pieces. There could have been some more!!!

Menu highlights are warm feta, crispy calamari, shrimp with orzo. Even just eating several appetizers would be great there. Got the second least expensive bottle of red and loved it. Got a same-day 8pm reservation for 5 people, which is rare in UWS. Attribute that to how large the space is. Downstairs was quieter and cooler than upstairs. I'd been to Kefi for lunch before and found it more pleasant. We went again for dinner on a Wednesday night and it was pretty noisy and hot. The food is great for the price, they have a very good wine list too, and it proved very pleasant for a big family dinner. I wouldn't go here for a romantic dinner or with someone hard of hearing.

Overall a big disappointment. Although my appetizer spreads and entree lamb burger were good, the restaurant overall was not very clean. Tables for two were ridiculously small. In addition, the restaurant is very dingy. We were seated in the basement part of the restaurant which was dismal to say the least yet super crowded and noisy. It could have a better ambiance. The bar was the more brighter and vibrant part of the restaurant. By far the wait staff was horrible, our entree's were served and nothing cleared from the prior course. Difficult to see who was doing what, just too confusing.

You don't have to travel to Astoria or go to a diner for a solid Greek meal. We were greeted warmly and seated in a quiet area of the spacious restaurant. The service was attentive. Large menu, including a variety of specials. We started with the Meze Greek spread which was excellent, served with toasted pita(nb they charged for a refill of this). The yogurt was particularly flavorful. My spinach, feta omelette was cooked perfectly and served in the skillet. My friends salads were copious and tasty. We lingered long after paying the tab and felt welcome. Worth another visit.

The food here is consistently outstanding. The dumplings are out of this world if you're feeling decadent, or a light grilled fish is always delicious & healthy. The wines are just alright, but the bartender mixes a great cocktail. The place is always bustling and can feel a bit packed, but the attention to detail in the food & service excuse the large parties and rows upon rows of tables which can make the experience less than special.

Eating at Kefi would have been a far more pleasant experience if the place weren't jammed to the gills. Diners were seated practically on top of one another, destroying any possibility for a real that conversation. My boyfriend has a hearing disability, and combined with the noise made it almost impossible to communicate at all. The servers also seemed confused. We (as well as both couples on either side of us) received food we hadn't ordered. While our server was very quick to correct the mistake(s), there was an air of perpetually impending mix-up.

Food was excellent. Service was very good. Only some minor hiccups. We were sat at the back of the restaurant where staff was moving in and out with plates. I'd recommend asking for a table at the front of the restaurant to avoid this. We didn't have olive oil on our table while everyone else did and didn't notice until the bread was gone. Bummer. There were also some screaming children, but I suppose that's the case with the Upper West Side. All in fantastic food. Loved the spreads, grilled octopus, branzino and the delicious white wines from Greece. We will be back when in that neighborhood.

This is a very pretty restaurant, unless you sit in the downstairs backroom which feels like you are in a basement. The rest of the basement is nice though. Upstairs is VERY noisy. Hate to say this, but as far as the food goes, all the people giving this place rave reviews must not be Greek because if you are, this is the worst Greek food you could hope to find. The tzatziki was good if you like dill, but everything else was bad to horrible.

The food was great, however we didn't notice that in fact it would be cheaper to order the same menu items withiut the restaurant week menu, which is unacceptable. Also in spite of having reservation we had to wait over 10 min for our table and were sitted on the bottom floor in an ugly room that felt like a cheap hotel dining room. They shouldn't even have this room- bad design, bad acustics, no natural light.

We visited Kefi for the first time because of NYC Restaurant Week. This place has 3 different eating areas. We were seated promptly at the lower level, which would have benefitted from additional air conditioning. One of the 3 of us wanted to order from the prix fix menu, but wasn't allowed to do so unless one other person also ordered from that menu. The service was attentive, though too attentive for my needs. When plates are removed from the table before others in your party are finished eating, it gives you the message that they want you out of the restaurant as soon as possible. The food is prepared well, but there are many Greek restaurants that have comparable food. If you don't live in the neighborhood, don't go out of your way.

The Place: The location is great (West 80's). Restaurant decor could use a little work, the place looked a little sad, not very "Grecian." We were seated below the main floor in a "basement" for lack of a better word, even though there were plenty of seats available up top. As a result we were next to the hustle and bustle of the wait staff going in and out of the kitchen, which wasn't the best dinning experience. The Food: I had the Kefi Salad and the Sheeps Milk Ravioli which were very tasty. The portion size of the appetizers seemed a little too large. My friends had the meatballs as an appetizer and were nearly full before they got to the entree. The Service: The service at Kefi is somewhere between good and so-so. 3 and 1/2 Stars.

Walked into a mob scene as we passed the bar to the go to the hostess. She was confused and had to get help to figure out where to seat us. Wow was it noisy and crowded. We actually pointed to an empty table and we were reluctantly seated there. The server was a dud. Overworked, confused, apologetic. She never asked us what we wanted to drink. When we finally requested wine and waited for 20 minutes, had to get up to find her, she told us that they were out of glasses. Are you kidding me! The manager finally came over and we were given a free glass of wine. Really now. Food was good. Bad experience. Not worth the time or effort. There are many Greek and Turkish restaurants that make you feel welcome. This was not one of them.
