A word from Keens Steakhouse
Keens Steakhouse, a classic New York chophouse, was already famous for its steaks and chops at the turn of the century. Founded in 1885, Keens has 90,000 clay pipes that line the ceilings – pipes once smoked by customers after dinner. Today Keens legendary mutton chops and dry aged prime steaks are still without equal in the city.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We have been the first time at Keens, but the food was outstanding. High Quality of meat, the vegetables were perfect cooked. All in it was a great experience! Always recommended! To bad we came only for a few days!"

  • "I ordered the prime rib, it was absolutely huge, I believe 24oz. I couldn't even come close to eating even half of it. My husband ordered the NY Sirloin... he devoured it all. You pay a lot, but you certainly get a huge portion. I just wish that they had smaller portion size offerings ..other than a filet. I'm sure that most diners aren't taking their leftovers with them ... such a waste of food. With so many going hungry, I felt very guilty about leaving so much of my meal behind. The atmosphere is casual, and the waitstaff very attentive. I would definitely go back again. "

  • "We took our three younger teens here on a Monday. Loved the history and the ambiance. Ordered the Porterhouse for three and the prime rib. The waiter offered to slice it in the back so we could all share. The beef was fantastic and was plenty for the five of us. We had the french fries and the mushrooms and ended up ordering a second order of french fries to have enough to go around. Service was good at first but our dirty dishes sat on our table for way too long, and then the waiter took forever to offer the dessert menu. I asked for one minute to make our final choices and he disappeared for almost 15 minutes before coming back to take our order. Annoying when you're paying a lot for dinner. The desserts were good, though. "

  • "It was our first time at Keens and from now on it is our favorite steakhouse, no doubts! After doing some research and reading tons of reviews (0 negative about Keens) I've decided to make a reservation there and was I right?!! Food - everything from starters all the way to deserts was delicious!!! Atmosfere and service perfect!! And one more thing….this place is spacious and comfortable to dine as opposite to some other steakhouses when you are actually rubbing shoulders with your neighbor. Thank you Keens…I'm going to be back soon!! "

  • "Nice place with good service but bring your check book. They have as a signature dish a mutton chop. Unique - more like a saddle. I've had "lamb" that was stronger tasting - this was good. Got a great history lesson from the waiter - history of the restaurant that is. Drinks are not small - worth the price and the Scotch list is impressive. Usually never see my favorite - Bunnahabhain, but it was there. "

  • "We've gone here many times. I'm the vegetarian in the group. Nothing for me except salad. They did give me a salad from the lunch menu which was very large. And I ordered a side potato. I really with there was one substantial vegetarian dish. Otherwise everything was fabulous."

  • "I know that this place is a haven for steak lovers and I can't eat red meat, however, I knew I had to go here because of its history. Not only does the diner get exceptional food (I had the roasted chicken) but one can see artifacts, mostly theatrical, on the walls that hearken back a century or earlier. The smoking pipes on the ceiling are extraordinary and the story behind their presence is totally absorbing. Best chocolate cake on the planet! This is a must stop place when in the city and it is only seven blocks south of 42nd street and Times square. Be prepared to spend some money here which is fine because one gets incredible value for the money spent."

  • "I visit Keens at least 3-4 times a year, that might not be that much, but it's my special occasion Steak place. I might have over-done it last time, Had some drinks, 'Prompt professional service, Oysters - super fresh and not crazy overpriced as in many Manhattan places, (but not cheap either) Finally dared myself for the KING's CHOP, it's like a Flintstones steak, but delicious, HUGE, but tasty, melting on your tongue,... After the first bite I was doubting myself how I would ever finish the entire plate,... Awesome sides, and I even let them talk me into dessert, Instead of a taxi I walked home 45 block to digest, Best steak ever, Great Service, and the ambience is awesome OLD SCHOOL as you want it. I'll be back soon"

  • "Short rib salad was made of Boston lettuce covered with reach dressing. On top of it was sliced half of avocado and a huge pile of crumbled goat cheese. And anther pile of pulled short ribs. It looked unattractive and tasted just as it sounds: bunch of ingredients just thrown together."

  • "Hands down the most incredible steak I have ever had - cooked to perfection! Very well priced once you see the portion sizes! Wowzer!!! The wait staff were attentive and friendly and the place generally was just gorgeous. Fabulous ambience. Was recommended by a friend and have already recommended to another two friends who are coming to NYC this month for visits!"

  • "I have dined at Keens several times over the years. The food and service have always been outstanding. Last night I was very disappointed in the awful table we were given and the horrendous unprofessionalism of the manager. Despite having made my reservation for 5 persons well in advance, we were taken to a cramped, small round table barely adequate to accomodate 4 people right by the entrance walkway, where every single person that walked in or out would bump into the persons sitting in the aisle. Without exaggeration, it was the worst table in the place. I asked the manager to move us, and he replied that he would be "perfectly happy" to sit at that table and that our reservation time (7:45PM) was "a difficult time." We walked out."

  • "My very first visit to Keen's goes back exactly 50 years when my then senior boss took "the young man" to K. - an introduction to what a typical NYC restaurant could be like - it still is. With eyes closed, and memories buried, one could think it was still 1964: great ambience, service, food, and suprisingly reasonable (lunch) prices ... for New York!"

  • "Friendly staff. Efficient without rushing you. Varied menu. Excellent lamb chops. I asked for them Pittsburgh style and they were perfect. The Scotch selection was unmatched. I found a new love. All in all an evening to remember."

  • "I had dinner at Keen's with a friend I had not seen for quite some time. He was visiting NYC and I wanted to take him to something special. Keen's definitely did the trick. He had Keen's signature dish, the Mutton, I had the Lamb Chops. Both dishes were cooked as requested and were delicious. All in all it was a great evening!"

  • "Really a great steakhouse and the history is just so interesting. This is an excellent steak although I think that we have an awesome steakhouse in Cincinnati with Jeff Ruby. The history and the clay pipes is what is the difference."

  • "Service was excellent and food was very, very good. Was visiting my son and we wanted a steakhouse. I did some research and decided to try Keen's - Thick Cut Bacon App, excellent and Chateaubriand for 2 and sides. Meat was perfect and sides were ok. This was an exceptional meal with my son - will go here again."

  • "So far, every time that I have gone to Keens they have always been able to deliver an excellent meal with fantastic service! I recently took my mother and two family friends that were visiting from California for a great "New York Steak" experience and the food, wine, and service was everything that I hoped for to create such a great memory from NYC. I look forward to returning and enjoying another steak there again soon!"

  • "I love Keen's. Different from other steak houses, Keen's feels like a traditional tavern. Steaks were perfectly done and everyone there seemed to be having the same great time we did."

  • "From the excellent food, historic atmosphere, impecable service and the well priced wine list, Keens never disappoints! We save Keens for our special occasions and have many, many wonderful memories of those evenings...looking forward to our next visit!"

  • "I live in Connecticut so have only been there approximately 10 times. It remains my favorite New York City steakhouse and I have eaten at many others (Peter Luger, Wolfgang's, Porter House, Sparks, etc.)."

  • "I lived in the neighborhood for four years and went to Keen's about three or four times when I did. I had the opportunity to return last week after a 10-year hiatus. Not a thing has changed. This is still the best place I know to get a mutton chop - and I would rather have a Keen's mutton chop than just about any steak in the world. Our waiter was a little less friendly than the servers I have had in the past. He wasn't terrible, just indifferent. My only other complaint is that the hash browns were not crispy and the portion was relatively small. Given the size and quality of everything else, that's a forgivable sin. I will be back again one day...."

  • "We stopped by the Keen's in our last NYC trip and we had a wonderfull Porthouse Steak at one of the historical NYC Steekhouses. It's a cozy place, good wine list, good ambient, good service and it also has a bar downstairs, what else can you ask for? Surprisingly for a couple of Spaniards like us you can also find fish in a Steakhouse (this would never happen in Spain) so that the place is suitable for those who are not meat eaters as well. One of the best meals we had in our trip. Visit and enjoy!"

  • "I went to Keens on the first night of my very first trip to New York City and it was a great experience! Our waiter was very kind and the food was excellent, my steak was cooked to perfection and the unique character with all the pipes made the place fun and interesting with the charm of times gone by. I would definitely come back to Keens when I visit New York City again!"

  • "Had dinner with freinds on trip to NY following recommendation from UK. Steaks ok, but had much better in UK - Hawksmoor/Goodmans. Service was poor, felt really hurried with little time spent explaining menu which resulted in us ordering far too many side dishes. Would not return."

  • "It was our first dinner [and first time at Keen's!] on our week-long trip and everything was fantastic. From the drinks at the bar, while we waited for our table - we arrived quite early - to the food. My husband had the mutton and i had the filet mignon and lobster, both were great, cooked perfectly, seasoned well and just delicious. It was a busy evening but we didn't wait too long, had a great time. We will definitely come back next time we're in New York."

  • "Went with a party of five on a Saturday night. We arrived 15 minutes early, but at once we were seated in a busy dining room. Plenty of rolls and crudités arrived immediately and we munched on those as we perused the menu. The lump crab cocktail and wedge salad with blue cheese were two of our favorite first courses. We all had steaks, mostly filets and Every One was cooked perfectly. Very good service, especially the bussers who were very attentive and on point. Return here almost every visit to NYC."
