A word from Keens Steakhouse
Keens Steakhouse, a classic New York chophouse, was already famous for its steaks and chops at the turn of the century. Founded in 1885, Keens has 90,000 clay pipes that line the ceilings – pipes once smoked by customers after dinner. Today Keens legendary mutton chops and dry aged prime steaks are still without equal in the city.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Keens remains a popular NY institution for a reason - the quality of the service and food is excellent. The bar has long been one of my favorites with well-made drinks, professional bartenders, (trivia), and a tremendous selection of whiskies. The restaurant has NY Steakhouse service and the food walks the line between steakhouse and Fine Dining as well as any in the City. Bravo! The Mutton Chop is why people come - and you should absolutely try it if you've never been or haven't in a few years - but the balance of their menu, particularly the seafood, is excellent."

  • "Our dinner for four was excellent. My T-bone steak was cooked to my liking and the flavor of the rub was excellent. The next time we visit NYC, we are going to have dinner at Keen's again."

  • "We will looking forward to a return visit. Not too noisy either. Better than many of the others we have tried in NYC before."

  • "We started at the bar, each with a Manhattan cocktail--superb drinks and the bartender was friendly and engaging. Our meal of Porterhouse for two was wonderful, as were the side dishes; all washed down with an excellent, and good-value Californian Cabernet. Well worth the visit and would happily return if the chance ever arises."

  • "We enjoyed our anniversary at this gem and were far from disappointed. Everything at Keen's is done with style and sophistication, but doesn't loose sight if the important things, like a quality cut of meat grilled to medium rare perfection."

  • "Fantastic steaks, and great service! Overall I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a special night out!"

  • "The whole experience was fantastic. The quality of the food being excellent try the porterhouse steak easily big enough for three maybe four not so big eaters at a push. Overall our party of four had a great experience"

  • "I first dined at Keens in the early 70s. How many times have I eaten there? Well, over twenty at least. Keens has never disappointed, well, should I say, up until recently. Last Friday I took a friend. He ordered the King Prime Rib. It was not fit for a King in size or delectability. He told me, and he knows, that it was a “six” on a scale of ten. The sides were spinach-- which had nothing on Birds Eye and red-jacket potatoes which were creamy enough no buttery or parsley flavor and actually had an off-taste. The rolls that were placed on the tables were an inauspicious start-- stale and were replaced with satisfactory. The glass of a South African red was outstanding and was the highlight. Sad to say it, but I won’t be back."

  • "Ordered "English cut" Prime rib, described as 'the same as the big prime rib, but off the bone and a bit smaller.' But the serving was two thin slices instead of the anticipated half-inch plus mini slab"

  • "One could not fault the service of our waiter, Spence. He was very professional & attentive"

  • "Outstanding steaks, great food. I prefer a slightly quieter setting for this type of meal, but defintely recommend."

  • "keens was quite nice. ordered the chateaubriand, absolutely ordinary. wine was delicious, the celery/carrot plate at the beginning was absolutely weird, and the hash brown was surprisingly delicious! service was very good, very friendly, mostly attentive. can't complain! interesting decor, gives you something to talk about."

  • "This was not the typical Mortons or Ruth Chris chain steakhouse. A one-of-a-kind historic restaturant with exceptional service and fabulous food. It was highly recommended to us and it did not disappoint."

  • "we were there with the family (Boys 19,21,23), the steaks were outstanding, the sirloin and the t-bone were manageable, with the ein ese we gave up after there quarters."

  • "Had a great meal, in the Bull Moose room. There were 5 of us and we ordered main courses of filet mignon, prime rib, red snapper, scrimps and the legendary mutton chop. All were excellent and cooked perfectly as ordered. Had 4 deserts the best of which was the home made Key Lime pie. The Lady M chocolate cake and butterscotch Sundae we good too as was the red berry bibble. My Kings Cut prime rib was grilled on both sides and the inside was medium rare as I requested. My before dinner cocktail, the Mint Julep was the best. Only complaint was from my sister who said the knife to cut the mutton chop should have a textured or wooden handle because it became slippery during the meal."

  • "Food was amazing. Our filet mignon was perfectly cooked medium rare. The house Cabernet went amazing with the meal. Service was great. Only drawback I can think of is that the decor looks kind of old and outdated. Seating is close quarters and kind of awkward."

  • "Keens Steakhouse offer Steaks that are just fantastic. They are big and very tasty. The service is quick and assertive. You will not be disappointed after a dinner here, but very full."

  • "Fantastic meal with friends and family. Best steak in New York City. Really history at this restaurant."

  • "The tables are too close to one another. Really didn't want the neighboring table to be inches from me"

  • "Everything was OK but nothing special. I've had better steak and better service elsewhere. It wasn't bad but it wasn't especially good either. Just OK."

  • "Keen's is notable for its unique atmosphere, it's warm and homey feeling, it's good food and drinks, but most notably for its mutton chop, which is always a winner! Great place to take out-of-towners who will be overwhelmed with the size and quality of the meat. Also a great destination for Thanksgiving dinner in a totally traditional and welcoming atmosphere. Keen's is a special place, well worth multiple visits. I also appreciated the fact that we were not rushed through our meal, but waited on in a very professional manner."

  • "Great place to eat before a show at the Garden. There is a variety such as lighter fare on the bar side or more formal dining on the restaurant side. Loved the pipes on the ceiling."
    Dined on 8/7/2014
  • "The food was excellent and very accommodating , I asked for 3 oysters with my lobster salad and that was not a problem. Great atmosphere, buzzing but you didn't actually hear others conversations. Would definitely recommend."

  • "Have been here several times. One of the best steaks in Manhattan. Doesn't get the notoriety but deserves it."

  • "This restaurant is highly recommended by locals as one of the best steaks in NYC - and I agree. Our steaks were well seasoned, tender and delicious. I also ordered the Bearnaise sauce - wow. The side dishes were incredible. The seasoning was die for. FYI: we ordered our steaks like we normally do, and Keens cooks their steaks "rarer" than most places I've ever visited. So my medium rare steak was closer to rare than I'd prefer - this is NOT a complaint, just something to be aware of this when ordering your steak. Our waiter was outstanding. We both agree that he was the best waiter we've ever had. Attentive and not overbearing, experienced, friendly and professional. I was very impressed with his ability to appear when we needed him."

  • "Our group had the Mutton, Double Lamb chops, Filet and roasted chicken and all were terrific, the waiter Will was all over us and made sure we had a great time, you gotta go...and the clay pipes from the late 1800's on were very cool to see."

  • "For a get-together of old friends! We asked to stay downstairs, to accommodate a sore knee. It was no issue for the hostess, but caused a slight delay before our server realized we were there. Once he saw us, he paced our meal perfectly... Though we did have to request a full wine list - the card for wine by the glass and a few cocktails was in the table. There was a suitable delay between drinks, appetizers and main meal. I especially liked being presented with carrots, olives and celery along with bread. The Chateau Briand was perfectly prepared, with three exceptional sauces (I loved the red wine sauce), and was the largest portion I've ever seen. The sirloin was also a hit, as was the Prime Rib. We didn't have room for dessert!"

  • "The Keens experience is one not to be missed. Food is beyond good and the service to match. Not for the faint of heart when it comes to pay the bill though so be prepared."

  • "My recent experience at Keen's was a mixed bag. The place is very charming and comfortable, and we were blessed with a wonderful waiter who guided us to a very satisfying meal that was more portion-size appropriate for us than we would have ordered on our own and, therefore, not as outrageously expensive as it would have been otherwise."

  • "I couldn't have asked for a better steak... Perfectly cooked."
    Dined on 7/29/2014
  • "The lobster was good. The porterhouse for two was big, but not the most flavorful. The filet mignon was very well received. Nothing particularly fancy or unique in the preparation or presentation, which is how a steakhouse should be. If it weren't in New York it would be significantly overpriced. Overall a good experience, although not quite as good as I'd been led to believe by other reviews."

  • "Our favorite restaurant in NYC. Always a great meal, attentive service, and wonderful wine. Our waiter (sadly moving back up North) recommended a fabulous bottle of wine."

  • "Pictures do not give the ambience justice, this place is original and definitely a great find. They have a wonderful verity of drinks, and I was especially impressed with their Scotch selection. The food was…Wow, just wow. I ordered a filet mignon with a lobster tail, the steak was hands down the best I have ever had and cooked to perfection! The sides were very tasty and perfect to share between two people. One of the staff in the entrance who enlightened us on the history of Keens as well some of the frequent visitors (and yes I'm talking celebrities) this just added to the charm of the place! Well done, and thank you for raising the bar on our dinning experiences!"
