A word from Keens Steakhouse
Keens Steakhouse, a classic New York chophouse, was already famous for its steaks and chops at the turn of the century. Founded in 1885, Keens has 90,000 clay pipes that line the ceilings – pipes once smoked by customers after dinner. Today Keens legendary mutton chops and dry aged prime steaks are still without equal in the city.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The Keens experience is one not to be missed. Food is beyond good and the service to match. Not for the faint of heart when it comes to pay the bill though so be prepared."

  • "My recent experience at Keen's was a mixed bag. The place is very charming and comfortable, and we were blessed with a wonderful waiter who guided us to a very satisfying meal that was more portion-size appropriate for us than we would have ordered on our own and, therefore, not as outrageously expensive as it would have been otherwise."

  • "The lobster was good. The porterhouse for two was big, but not the most flavorful. The filet mignon was very well received. Nothing particularly fancy or unique in the preparation or presentation, which is how a steakhouse should be. If it weren't in New York it would be significantly overpriced. Overall a good experience, although not quite as good as I'd been led to believe by other reviews."

  • "Pictures do not give the ambience justice, this place is original and definitely a great find. They have a wonderful verity of drinks, and I was especially impressed with their Scotch selection. The food was…Wow, just wow. I ordered a filet mignon with a lobster tail, the steak was hands down the best I have ever had and cooked to perfection! The sides were very tasty and perfect to share between two people. One of the staff in the entrance who enlightened us on the history of Keens as well some of the frequent visitors (and yes I'm talking celebrities) this just added to the charm of the place! Well done, and thank you for raising the bar on our dinning experiences!"

  • "The waiter overheard my son and I discussing our long day and asked did we want to expedite our meal. While I did not, I thought it was very perceptive and responsive. The sides were exceptional and the steak was very good, not the best that I have had but it definately is comparable to other high end steak houses."

  • "This is the third or fourth time I've dined at Keens and every time the steak is superb. We had the lobster bisque and iceberg lettuce with blue cheese dressing for starters and shared the chateaubriand. Simply divine! A really good Zinfandel (Swan river) to go with it and took away the leftover steak for an amazing sandwich the next day for lunch."

  • "I took my son to Keens for a special occasion. The atmosphere is great, lots of energy, many groups having a good time. The pipe collection is amazing! I ordered the mutton, my wife had the filet, and my son tried the lamb chops. Wow...says it all. Perfectly cooked medium rare mutton...well cooked steak and lamb too. Even the sides were great...we had asparagus and mashed potatoes. I was very impressed by the quality of the food. It is a bit noisy so don't expect a quiet conversation...we loved the energy. I will return next time I'm in NYC."

The drinks at the bar were great, and the atmosphere energetic. The service was excellent as well. Will be back for sure."

  • "This place has a great old school New York vibe, wood paneling, old pipes on the ceiling its like being in a 1800s Gentleman's club, the food is big and good! Its a great occasion place! We took my boyfriends mom for her 60th and everyone had a wonderful meal."

  • "I'm a proud owner of the travel agency in New York. I market very wealthy and wealthy Europeans coming to East Coast. I had opportunity to dining with my clients in the most expensive or most original restaurants in Americas. Keens is interesting. Service is fantastic. Ambiance is inviting but it is not up class dinning. The wine list a little limited but enough for the tourists. The food is relatively not expensive if you take the real think -steak. It is wasting money to come here for steak salad or lobster. The coffee is very average. The cream brule too sweet but world is not perfect :) I like the place as restaurant and I love the restaurant as tourist attractions. I will bring more people in."

  • "Made reservations and the only one available was very late. Received call day of dinner to confirm and they were able to move up time. Very attentive staff and they even had a glass of champagne ready for my wife and I knowing that is was our fortieth anniversary. Could not say enough nice things about the service and food."

  • "This is my second trip to Keens and I was nervous it wouldn't live up to my first visit. It actually exceeded my expecations! There is so much history to the building and the food is absoultely spectactular!"

  • "The food, service and room were fabulous. I was there many years ago and it is still as great as it was then. I would definetly recommend."

  • "We are Asian. My friends mother cannot beat the blue cheese iceberg salad as first, but after a while. She said that salad just cannot get out of her mind. T -bone is quality and good as always."

  • "Porterhouse for two was tender but flavorless. The apps (crab cakes and thick sliced bacon) were good but not a amazing. I am sad to report the the best dish of the evening was the boiled new potatoes with butter and parsley. Very disappointed! Over all, not even close to great. We won't be back."

  • "Best steakhouse and I never miss it when in NYC. Food served have a very high standard though service personal may vary in knowledge (wine list) and attention which is a minor remark. One thing they do not master is how to make a good sauce Bearnaise and I doubt they have any vinegar in it. I also visited the day after to fill up my need-of-steak-intake! Make sure to book a table specially for the weekend."

  • "We ate at Keens to celebrate our anniversary.! We had the lobster/filet combination, excellently prepared and delicious. Won't go through the whole dinner. Suffice it to say the meal was outstanding as was our server. A premiere NY steak house!"

  • "The last time I visited Keens, I left feeling that this was the probably the greatest steakhouse on the planet. Atmosphere. History. Proper waiters. Stiff drinks. And damn good steaks. This time was different. Maybe it was my timing. It was 530 on a Wed. And I ate in the bar. The waiter was frazzled and indifferent. I was surrounded by tourists with shopping bags wearing t-shirts and ballcaps. I ordered a 6 oz filet with a side of asparagus. The filet was ok. The asparagus was just plain bad. Like "from a can" bad. $50 is too much to pay for an six ounces of OK meat and canned asparagus. Won't be back."

  • "We had a wonderful night at Keens, we arrived early and had a drink in the lively bar and then were shown to an intimate table where we could watch the rest of the room. Nothing was too much trouble, our waiter was patient and knowledgeable both about the restaurant's history and the menu and ingredients. We had Oysters and Chateaubriand, the meat was amazing - melt in the mouth tender and beautifully cooked. All in all we had a wonderful and memorable evening in Keens and we would definitely recommend it to any steak lover who wants an authentic New York eating experience."

  • "Was really hoping for a Steakhouse to standup to the old Peter Luger's( as of the last two years Luger's has crashed and burned on their steak's), but I did not find it at Keens. Great Service, but the Steak for two was unforgettable. Maybe the mutton chop would be great, but my wife will not eat lamb......so maybe a solo trip back or I will take my daughter. The Service would bring me back, but not the steak! FYI.....I asked for the steak med-rare plus...it came out perfect! Go to Luger's and try that(Good Luck)! I have been going to Luger's for 30 years......it has drastically changed for the worse. Never going back to Luger's! Keens over Luger's as of today!"

  • "We went to celebrate my husbands birthday, and were very happy with our dining choice. Food and service was excellent! After inquiring about the history of Keens our waiter was kind enough to ask the maître d' to show us around the restaurant. It was as wonderful as the food! Lots of old New York memorabilia, it was great. We will defiantly be back again."

  • "A fantastic steakhouse with a lot of character and quality steaks. A great wine list. Try the Stark Conde (South African) wine, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Definitely worth a visit on your next trip to New York."

  • "As we were staying on west 35th street, we googled restaurants nearby. Keens is full of character the service was excellent, good choice on the menu, our waiter assured us that one portion of fries and vegetables would be enough for two, he wasn't wrong, the food was fantastic, portions were generous, our steaks were cooked exactly as requested. We didn't manage starters or desserts, but what we saw coming out of the kitchen looked fabulous. If we return to NYC, Keens is a must do restaurant. Pre book on line or you could be disappointed not to get a table."

  • "With fantastic old school fare and drinks, gentlemanlike service and a milieu you can't find anywhere else in NYC, Keen's is the go to place for anyone with a sense of style and appreciation for the good ol times. Just do it!"

  • "classic nyc steak house. old school ambiance and charm, attentive wait staff, excellent food and good wine. Visited this past Friday with a group of friends for my birthday day. Pricey but that's to be expected and definitely worth it."

  • "Great dinner; one of the top 3 in my life. Thick cut smoked bacon was amazing, and reaffirmed my faith in all things bacon. Mutton chop was cooked a perfect medium rare with a flavorful decadent fat cap and was not as gamey as some reviews had led me to expect. King's Cut Prime Rib (my sister's dish) was indeed a royal cut of beef with soft juicy tenderness and sinfully tasty fat. The hand cut French fries were plentiful and were so addictive. Sauteed field mushrooms were OK; oddly they tasted like Stove Top Stuffing in seasoning. For dessert, Keens' Berry Bibble was a perfect sweet, creamy, and fresh foil to all the meat consumed. Service was exemplary, our waiter was congenial, courteous, and knowledgeable; a true professional."
