A word from Keens Steakhouse
Keens Steakhouse, a classic New York chophouse, was already famous for its steaks and chops at the turn of the century. Founded in 1885, Keens has 90,000 clay pipes that line the ceilings – pipes once smoked by customers after dinner. Today Keens legendary mutton chops and dry aged prime steaks are still without equal in the city.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I realize Keens is known for the mutton chop and I'm sure it is quite good but I highly recommend the steak. We had the fillet and the strip steaks and both could not be beat. Cooked perfectly and aged to perfection. I had the wedge salad and we shared the creamed spinach and sauteed mushrooms. All were scrumptious! We still can't figure out what the mix of long carrot eighths, celery sticks, black olives and really yummy dip that arrived when we sat down were. Just a strange thing to serve in such a great restaurant. We were seated along a long stretch of 2 and 4 tops that were packed in so tight the tables had about 3 inches of space between them. Didn't bother us but if you don't want to get to know your neighbors request other seats."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed the history of this restaurant along with the ambiance. Staff was very friendly and the service was excellent. We would definitely not only recommend to family and friends but we would definitely enjoy dining at Keens again."

  • "Average overall. Tables weren't bussed quickly or ever brushed."

  • "There are so many fabulous chop houses in New York, and they all serve superb meats. But Keens is different in two ways. Their hostory and old NY ambiance help them move a step above, as does their specialty in lamb and mutton. We know of no where else that compares. Enjoy the great bar before dining."

  • "A place full of history! The food was amazing. We had the porterhouse for two and it was more than enough. The sides were very small but good enough for two. Dessert was great but small portions also. We shared the panna cotta and the crime brûlée. Overall, we had a great time."

  • "I was told by numerous colleagues that Keens was the best steakhouse in NY. Being a die hard Peter Lugers fan I decided to take some friends out who insisted I order the Kings Cut. Unfortunately we had a late reservation (10pm) and the kitchen ran out as I tried to order that cut. Regardless to say I was very disapointed that I did not get to try this "amazing" steak. I'm not sure if I will recommend this place considering I've had other cuts of steak that I enjoyed at other steak houses. "

  • "We were only in NYC last week for a short break and and booked Keens after browsing the internet beforehand for a good steakhouse. Reviews were excellent and we were not disappointed. Ambience, food and serrvice were excellent and gave us an enjoyable evening with food that was fantastic. Would definitely recommend and would revist on our next visit to NYC. Thank you Keens!!!!"

  • "We were a party of five and arrived a bit late because we underestimated the distance. At the entrance, a rather unfriendly welcome but the guy promptly found our reservation. The rather dark restaurant was packed all evening (it was Holy Thursday) and beautifully decorated with pipes on the ceiling, framed pictures and dark wood, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere. Meat was excellent (although my brother ordered Filet Mignon medium rare which arrived almost well-done first -but the waiter brought another one in a very short time), great service and so was our overall impression. Highly recommended."

  • "Dinner was for my friends 69th birthday. Service was just spot on. Food was impeccable. Cappucino and dessert were the coup de grace. Dining experience was just perfect. Again and again this is why I come back to Keens. "

  • "We booked a table for a Monday night in Keen's. This was our first ever time there. Our French waiter was absolutely amazing. His timing his knowledge, his intentness was far beyond our expectations. Assuming because of a kitchen mistake we had to wait nearly an hour to get our steaks which we were informed after about 40 mins. We were told by the supervisor that our side orders will be taken care of and feel free to have some desserts on them. The portion of the long waited steaks were huge, however it felt more of the quantity not the quality. Side orders were great. I loved their spinach. We opted for no desserts. We had a good time but mainly because of the service not because of food qualities."

  • "We have been the first time at Keens, but the food was outstanding. High Quality of meat, the vegetables were perfect cooked. All in it was a great experience! Always recommended! To bad we came only for a few days!"

  • "I ordered the prime rib, it was absolutely huge, I believe 24oz. I couldn't even come close to eating even half of it. My husband ordered the NY Sirloin... he devoured it all. You pay a lot, but you certainly get a huge portion. I just wish that they had smaller portion size offerings ..other than a filet. I'm sure that most diners aren't taking their leftovers with them ... such a waste of food. With so many going hungry, I felt very guilty about leaving so much of my meal behind. The atmosphere is casual, and the waitstaff very attentive. I would definitely go back again. "

  • "Keens serves a disproportionately large portion of pre-sliced beef tenderloin and calls it "chateaubriand." A REAL chateaubriand for two is appropriately sized for two persons, is cut from the heart of the tenderloin, has a crisp and delicate charred outer crust, which leads to butter tender meat of gradually increasing rarity as you make your way to the center. A REAL chateaubriand for two is carved tableside by the server and plated right in front of you. Keens version was served rare and pre-sliced, in a portion for four. To make matters worse, they brought the already tepid dish to the table at a time when two of our party were in the ladies room. Horrible service. Amateur kitchen. Don't waste your time, palate, or money."

  • "We took our three younger teens here on a Monday. Loved the history and the ambiance. Ordered the Porterhouse for three and the prime rib. The waiter offered to slice it in the back so we could all share. The beef was fantastic and was plenty for the five of us. We had the french fries and the mushrooms and ended up ordering a second order of french fries to have enough to go around. Service was good at first but our dirty dishes sat on our table for way too long, and then the waiter took forever to offer the dessert menu. I asked for one minute to make our final choices and he disappeared for almost 15 minutes before coming back to take our order. Annoying when you're paying a lot for dinner. The desserts were good, though. "

  • "It was our first time at Keens and from now on it is our favorite steakhouse, no doubts! After doing some research and reading tons of reviews (0 negative about Keens) I've decided to make a reservation there and was I right?!! Food - everything from starters all the way to deserts was delicious!!! Atmosfere and service perfect!! And one more thing….this place is spacious and comfortable to dine as opposite to some other steakhouses when you are actually rubbing shoulders with your neighbor. Thank you Keens…I'm going to be back soon!! "

  • "Nice place with good service but bring your check book. They have as a signature dish a mutton chop. Unique - more like a saddle. I've had "lamb" that was stronger tasting - this was good. Got a great history lesson from the waiter - history of the restaurant that is. Drinks are not small - worth the price and the Scotch list is impressive. Usually never see my favorite - Bunnahabhain, but it was there. "

  • "We've gone here many times. I'm the vegetarian in the group. Nothing for me except salad. They did give me a salad from the lunch menu which was very large. And I ordered a side potato. I really with there was one substantial vegetarian dish. Otherwise everything was fabulous."

  • "I know that this place is a haven for steak lovers and I can't eat red meat, however, I knew I had to go here because of its history. Not only does the diner get exceptional food (I had the roasted chicken) but one can see artifacts, mostly theatrical, on the walls that hearken back a century or earlier. The smoking pipes on the ceiling are extraordinary and the story behind their presence is totally absorbing. Best chocolate cake on the planet! This is a must stop place when in the city and it is only seven blocks south of 42nd street and Times square. Be prepared to spend some money here which is fine because one gets incredible value for the money spent."

  • "I visit Keens at least 3-4 times a year, that might not be that much, but it's my special occasion Steak place. I might have over-done it last time, Had some drinks, 'Prompt professional service, Oysters - super fresh and not crazy overpriced as in many Manhattan places, (but not cheap either) Finally dared myself for the KING's CHOP, it's like a Flintstones steak, but delicious, HUGE, but tasty, melting on your tongue,... After the first bite I was doubting myself how I would ever finish the entire plate,... Awesome sides, and I even let them talk me into dessert, Instead of a taxi I walked home 45 block to digest, Best steak ever, Great Service, and the ambience is awesome OLD SCHOOL as you want it. I'll be back soon"

  • "Short rib salad was made of Boston lettuce covered with reach dressing. On top of it was sliced half of avocado and a huge pile of crumbled goat cheese. And anther pile of pulled short ribs. It looked unattractive and tasted just as it sounds: bunch of ingredients just thrown together."

Was recommended by a friend and have already recommended to another two friends who are coming to NYC this month for visits!"

  • "I have dined at Keens several times over the years. The food and service have always been outstanding. Last night I was very disappointed in the awful table we were given and the horrendous unprofessionalism of the manager. Despite having made my reservation for 5 persons well in advance, we were taken to a cramped, small round table barely adequate to accomodate 4 people right by the entrance walkway, where every single person that walked in or out would bump into the persons sitting in the aisle. Without exaggeration, it was the worst table in the place. I asked the manager to move us, and he replied that he would be "perfectly happy" to sit at that table and that our reservation time (7:45PM) was "a difficult time." We walked out."

  • "My very first visit to Keen's goes back exactly 50 years when my then senior boss took "the young man" to K. - an introduction to what a typical NYC restaurant could be like - it still is. With eyes closed, and memories buried, one could think it was still 1964: great ambience, service, food, and suprisingly reasonable (lunch) prices ... for New York!"

  • "I had dinner at Keen's with a friend I had not seen for quite some time. He was visiting NYC and I wanted to take him to something special. Keen's definitely did the trick. He had Keen's signature dish, the Mutton, I had the Lamb Chops. Both dishes were cooked as requested and were delicious. All in all it was a great evening!"
