A word from Keens Steakhouse
Keens Steakhouse, a classic New York chophouse, was already famous for its steaks and chops at the turn of the century. Founded in 1885, Keens has 90,000 clay pipes that line the ceilings – pipes once smoked by customers after dinner. Today Keens legendary mutton chops and dry aged prime steaks are still without equal in the city.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Great dinner; one of the top 3 in my life. Thick cut smoked bacon was amazing, and reaffirmed my faith in all things bacon. Mutton chop was cooked a perfect medium rare with a flavorful decadent fat cap and was not as gamey as some reviews had led me to expect. King's Cut Prime Rib (my sister's dish) was indeed a royal cut of beef with soft juicy tenderness and sinfully tasty fat. The hand cut French fries were plentiful and were so addictive. Sauteed field mushrooms were OK; oddly they tasted like Stove Top Stuffing in seasoning. For dessert, Keens' Berry Bibble was a perfect sweet, creamy, and fresh foil to all the meat consumed. Service was exemplary, our waiter was congenial, courteous, and knowledgeable; a true professional."

  • "Our first time in Keens , convenient location , easy to find , plenty of people in but not raucus , good atmosphere as a result .... concentrated on the food which was superb , we both had filet mignon with mash and roasted veg and a sauce , I followed with a panacote which was lovely . Sensible wine list , big prices if you want to go " Wall Street " but I had a californian Shiraz at 38 bucks which did us fine.... Keens is now on our list of " must do" steak places when we visit NYC from the UK , just wish I`d added it to the list earlier :o)"

  • "We have been going to Keens for years when we travel to NYC. We still enjoy this classic NY steakhouse. Service is great and so is the food. Highly recommend Keens for any occasion."

  • "I went to Keen's on the enthusiastic recommendation of my son, who lived in NYC for several years and who frequented Keen's. I have to say here that the food did not live up to the hype: my 12-year old ordered a burger (not because he doesn't like steak--he was trying to economize for his father's sake) and it was small and slathered in a ton of White Cheddar cheese, which completely masked any flavor from the burger. He ended up not eating much of the burger, and to her credit, the waitress allowed us to sub a filet for the burger, which my son loved. My prime rib was delicious, but served almost cold. And my side dishes were also luke-warm. Overall, I was conflicted but disappointed in the food. The service, however, was excellent."

  • "On our arrival we were given hot bread, celery and carrot sticks and the best blue cheese dip I have ever tasted. When I commented on it the waiter brought more. We had the Porterhouse steak for 2. It was cooked to perfection. A lovely meal. I would definately return."

  • "Food was excellent, the steak was as good as I have had. Wine over priced, which seems to be the case in most NYC restaurants,"

  • "Everything was seasoned good the steak is amazing wasn't dry didn't need any sauce on it.. Any you love the drink the best one is the New York sour.. It's a lil prices but we'll worth it .."

  • "Meal was good not exceptional.I was somewhat disappointed with our waiter who spent majority of our time there chatting with the next table. He seemed to be a bit up himself and could be overheard boasting to his new friends how he had been poached from another eatery. I asked him about the crab cake and felt slightly patronised with his response, like he couldn't be bothered and I'd asked a stupid question. I probably had but nevertheless I was the customer. Other staff were great, couldn't be faulted but it was our waiter who I felt let Keen's down. I had said it was my wife's fortieth birthday which to us was special but unfortunately our experience in Keen's wasn't. Could not recommend."

  • "A friend mentioned this place to us for our weekend in NYC and we are so glad we visited for dinner. My wife had the Buttermilk Chicken and I had the Filet. Both were perfect. Also had a few of the Keen's Ale IPA. We both loved the history of the building and our meals/service were fantastic. Definitely recommend this place to others and will be back next time in the city."

  • "I've eaten at most of the high-profile steakhouses in NYC -- Peter Luger, Sparks, Del Frisco, Smith & Wollensky, Nick & Stef, Bobby Vans, Uncle Jack's, as well as the bigger chains like Palm, Mortons and Ruth Chris. While all of them can be great, I think Keens is dependably the best steak in town. The ambiance upstairs and downstairs is superb and absolutely unique. The scotch selection is one of the best in the city. The one thing I'd change if I could is the wine list, which could improve a bit but still gets the job done. Luger may get more buzz, but if a mouthwatering steak is what you want I'd stay in Manhattan and go to Keens. Order the New York strip."

  • "we found this restaurant on trip advisor. it does not look like much from the outside but it is very large inside with multiple rooms and a lot of history. we dined one night as a foursome and returned the next night with 3 more friends - excellent food and service"

  • "As a native of Chicago I take awesome steakhouses for granted; Michigan Avenue is pretty much Murder's Row for steak. Keens was the best steakhouse I've eaten at in New York; better than 21 and much, much, much better than Gallager's. Perfectly prepared steak, charred on top, in a historic venue right off Broadway in Manhattan. Server was at the top of his game; friendly, authoritative, helpful without being intrusive. This was as good as it gets."

  • "Best steak I've had! Servings are huge but I had the filet mignon and my partner had the lamb chops which were both manageable. When I booked through open table I told them it was for my partner's birthday and the restaurant brought out key lime pie for dessert! So nice!"

  • "We loved our trip to Keen's with friends on our visit from DFW. Keen's is just as good as Peter Luger's and offers it's own brand of unique ambiance. The Mutton Chop was fantastic as were the various steaks our table enjoyed. The thick cut smoked bacon cannot be underestimated as an appetizer. Great service, great food, great location. All around excellent experience."

  • "What a great place. I first went to Keens 15 years ago and it's still going strong. It is a little worse for the wear, and the neighborhood has waned over the years, but it's always the place to go for a great meat meal. If you love meat...this is the place for you. Service is always great, menu is timeless and the history is so very interesting. This visit we took our 10 year old. He found the meal delightful as well."

  • "We had an amazing dinner and the food is outstanding, perfectly aged beef. The Mutton chop, is out of this world! Then Dessert you have to try the berry bibble!!!! The service is impeccable..There's a reason it's the oldest steakhouse in Manhattan!!"

  • "We loved our recent dinner at Keens. We got there early, so we went to the pub side and had a drink first. The staff at the bar was not friendly at all, and seemed we were inconveniencing them for ordering drinks. We were afraid that we had made a wrong decision on our dinner choice, but the dining room side was amazing. Our waiter was great, and our food was wonderful!"

  • "The steak is not great as I thought. We ordered two medium porterhouse steaks but came out fully cooked mostly. We requested to exchange and 10 minutes later we got the steaks in medium. Services are good as expected."

  • "I'm never disappointed when I dine at Keens. The Maitre'd welcomed us within minutes of our arrival in the bar. The bartender Todd was personable. We had a 5:30 reservation on Saturday night and were not rushed to our table or during dinner. We left at 8:40. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly. The mutton chop was cooked to perfection at medium. My wife needed a second firing on her steak since the medium was too red for her. It came back perfect. The mushroom side dish is a must have for mushroom fans. We'll be back the next time we are in NYC."

  • "I visited the restaurant based on seeing it's website on the internet and noting in particular its signature dish. I found booking a table and finding the restaurant very easy, enjoying a beer in the bar next door as I was a few minutes early. I was warmly greeted and shown to my table, which was nicely central and placed my drinks order.I chose the bacon starter, which was delicious and then tackled the chop,a little larger than I would normally take on but very nice accompanied by Yukon mash and vegetables. Unfortunately whist the dessert menu looked very inviting I was already full and will have to return another day"
