Diner Reviews
  • "I was not impressed with the food. It was pretty spicy for a dish that didn't indicate any kind of spice level. I ordered the jerked pork quesadilla. Ended up being slightly soggy. Salad was ok. Appetizers were just okay. Probably won't return. I'm not a huge fan of Caribbean food. The manager was very nice and stopped to check on our table."

  • "We went to Kaya for lunch on a Saturday. We received our food fast, and were not disappointed. The Tropical Paella was delicious for seafood lovers! The service was attentive but not overwhelming."

  • "I am a full-on carnivore and my BF is vegan and Kaya was a perfect spot for us, more than accommodating both of our food choice lifestyles. A perfect blend."

  • "Island cuisine in the heart of The Strip. Pittsburghers will steer you to other spots in the famous "Strip District" but this place needs to be on the list. Food is great, ambiance is cool and service is top notch."

  • "A little too expensive for a casual meal, but very good dishes with lots of fresh peppers, cilantro and the like. Mixes of sweet and hot abound. I haven't had a bad dish yet. And if you get Chas, he's a fantastic waiter!"

  • "A little loud, but great food and drinks more than makes up for it!"

  • "This place is part of the Big Burrito family. I would put it as middle of the pack. Not as tired as Mad Mex. Nice interesting menu well presented with good service."

  • "My wife and I had some of the best food we've eaten in a long time. The skirt steak was perfect, swordfish was terrific, and bean dip appetizer was unique and delicious. Very, very, very good food! Make reservations and enjoy!"

  • "Kaya is one of my favorite spots in the city - never lets us down. Most recent visit was for the Vegetarian night on 20 August. I love that they can make food both look and taste that good, without any animals harmed in the making! These people know Food."

  • "The monthly vegetarian menu is always excellent but this months was outstanding. Flavors complemented each other beautifully. Service is always very good without being overwhelming. Cocktails are superb. If two people are dining, one person should get the vegan menu and the other person, the veggie menu, then switch plates half way through the meal. Bravo Big Burrito and Kaya."

  • "Here for the first time in Pittsburgh for work. My co-workers and i stopped in. Good was great. Our server Chaz was knowledgeable about the menu, funny and engaging. Food was very good you should try the jerk swordfish. Large portions."

  • "My wife and i had not been to the strip for many years. What a breath of fresh air Kaya was. From the moment we got there till the time we left was great. The drinks were perfectly mixed, the mahi mahi perfectly cooked, and service was great. Best of all, the food was fresh and delicious. We will definitely return, and most likely try dinner."

  • "This is a small, very casual restaurant in the strip district. There is nothing fancy about the place; in fact, when I walked in I thought it was just a bar. Luckily they did have a one table in the back with seating for our party of six. As soon as the appetizers hit the table we forgot about the ambiance because the food was amazing."

  • "Decided to head here for a quick bite on a Sunday. Fish tacos were delicious. My girlfriend wanted a crab cake sandwich for dinner. Usually only on the lunch menu. Our waitress was very helpful and asked the kitchen if it was still possible to order. Needless to say the crab cake sandwich was delicious. Thank u to Kaya for being so accommodating."

  • "Love Kaya for brunch or dinner... We've had several things and nothing disappoints. I recommend the black bean dip, plantain hummus, flank steak, swordfish, Cuban sandwich and fish tacos. Their burger is pretty darn good too!"

  • "My wife and I love to check out restaurants we haven't visited and the visit to Kaya didn't disappoint! It was very clear the food prepared was from very fresh ingredients. The wait staff is very accommodating. My wife didn't like the beer she ordered and the waitress suggested she order a different one and the first one would not be charged. The overall experience was very favorable!"

  • "My husband and I recently visited Kaya after a long absence. Our server and his trainee were great. The food, however, was "nothing to write home about." We ordered the conch hush puppies. The amount of salt on them was outrageous. I ordered the Tempura Avocado Bahn Mi Tacos. The avocado was bland. I wish some of the salt from the hush puppies could have found its way to the tacos. The tacos had a massive amount of cilantro piled on top. I was able to make a cilantro side salad. My husband ordered the Heirloom BLT. A top slice of the tomato was brown and rotten. I'm not sure how the prep cook missed it. The salad that accompanied the BLT was not dressed -- just dry field greens. Disappointed to say the least!"

  • "Having tried almost every item on their menu, I am still impressed, and a bit amused, that of all the places in Pittsburgh to get a burger, who would have thought a Caribbean place would have the best one?"
    Dined on 7/21/2014
  • "I no longer live in Pittsburgh so only visit kaya every few years. The menu changes and it's always good. I don't eat wheat, much dairy or red meat or poultry. No problem. Good for seafood."

  • "Appetizers and entrees were creative, bountiful and delicious!! Best jerk chicken I have had in years (and we've vacationed to St. Thomas, USVI many times). Several of our party were vegetarians and their options were plentiful. Highly recommended."

  • "I've never had a bad meal at Kaya!! It's a staple "go to" place when I have guests in town (or now, when I return to Pittsburgh)! Fish Taco's are my favorite. We went Thursday evening and to our surprise it was "Fried Chicken Thursday." My son thoroughly enjoyed the meal and asked for a second corn bread (which was differenct, moist almost like a brownie, but great). Our partie's third meal, the jerk pork enchilada, was also extremely tasty with a kick in the end. Service could have been a bit better; however, I think it was a function of a very busy food crowd with a very busy post happy hour bar crowd. Our service delays were with water and drinks. Get reservations as I've never seen this place not busy!"

  • "Kaya is our destination location for girls night out! Happy hour drinks are fun and festive and we always order a variety of appetizers which never disappoint. Severs are always pleasant and attentive to our every need! Love Kaya!!"

  • "Tables are packed rather tight into the space. Food is amazing. I love seeing a restaurant take on vegetarian/vegan dining at that level. Was happy with each course. Service was a little confused and I was surprised that the they didn't explain what wine pairings were going with the food. There was a very loud very drunk table swearing very loudly behind us and it was making several tables uncomfortable but nothing was said to them from the staff. For a fun place to hang with friends this place would be great. If it's always that loud and full of obnoxious diners that aren't quieted I would not recommend for a romantic night."

  • "Food was on point...once it was served correctly. My guest and I were there on a weekday that wasn't too busy by Kaya standards, but server did not get order right and runners delivered wrong dishes...with additional sides missing completely. Took a good 10-15 minutes to get the sides correct, by which time, entrees were largely cold. A bit of arrogance showed by server for the faux pas, and no offer for free item, drink, etc. I know it is hot spot and continually busy, but still, c'mon guys.....make the servers and runners (which I HATE at restaurants, and I was server for loooong time) at least fake their sorrow for mistakes a bit better...."

  • "My daughter took me here for dinner while I was visiting her from out of town. The fish tacos and vegetable paella were wonderful. The grapefruit/basil margarita was very tasty as well. If you are looking for a unique dining experience, go to Kaya. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. We sat outside where it was very quiet so I can't attest to the noise level inside. If there was one negative, I would have to say it was the bathroom, very dark."

  • "The Fish Tacos & red Sangria are 5 star rating. Maybe the best I've ever had! Everything else was .. ok. Seated at a really awkward table where one person was in the walkway and I was hitting the person behind me. Server was so nice but it was slow to get our apps, about 20 minutes, not exaggerating. Ribs were eh, sauce was good. I thought the rice on the Paella would have been AMAZING for the price but it had no flavor. Conch Friters were good but seemed burnt. The decor was less Caribbean, chic, relaxed and more dark, tacky, college frat theme party.. Looked like a dive bar with some decorations. Dining in PGH now offers so many dining EXPERIENCES, its disappointing spending $100 for anything less. :/"

  • "My husband and I go to Kaya a couple of times a year. We love fried chicken Thursdays! My husband ordered the fried chicken, and there was plenty to share with my vegetable paella. Yummy!"

  • "It was my second time dining at Kaya. I loved everything about my meal. The salmon was prepared perfectly. Our server Tom, was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive to our needs throughout the meal. Dessert was wonderful...best sorbet I ever had. Prior to dinner we had several cocktails which were reminiscent of my trip to the Florida Keys."

  • "It has become tradition to visit Kaya a couple of times per year for a sister's night out. It never disappoints. I like that they keep some of my favorites but change some of the other menu items periodically. The grouper was excellent and the Tempura Avocado Bahn Mi Tacos & mussels were quite tasty. The graduate was a nice, refreshing summer cocktail and you can't beat the Aztec Chocolate Martini!! Best chocolate martini I have ever had hands down."
