Kauai Grill - St. Regis - HawaiiIt Gets No Better -Celebrating our 30th anniversary, my wife and I decided to go to the Kauai Grill on our last night in Kauai. The ambiance of this place begins when you meet the valet at the hotel entrance, and continues thru the lobby of the hotel until you reach the restaurant. We got there a little early to get a window table to view the sunset (which turned our to be gorgeous-do this if possible). We opted for the tasting menu-an absolute HIT. Our waitress was pleasant, but not always around (we wanted coffee and had to wait for her to come by, even after our desserts were served). The servers were just excellent. We have eaten at other "5 Star" restaurants, and this one is near, if not at, the top (value and view-wise it's hard to beat). This is rarely the case when you have a magical view as well. It was the only restaurant or bar at the St. Regis to which I would enjoy a return visit. Get there by 6:30 for a prime table. We enjoyed a booth that faced the window.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMAn Exceptional ExperienceHaving eaten here on a few other occasions, I remain impressed with the cuisine, service and ambiance. This is world class cuisine served by incredibly professional wait staff. My tenderloin was outstanding as were the toppings. The asparagus vinaigrette was great although one serving proved overwhelming for a single diner. The appetizer of spring pea soup was subtle with a beautiful finished taste profile. The strawberry shortcake, while fine, fell short of the quality of the appetizer, entree and side dish. My waiter was outstanding and sensitive to the needs of a single diner as were the delightful hostesses. Be sure to enjoy the bread basket. This is sophisticated cuisine is worthy of any food mecca. The atmosphere at The Kauai Grill is wonderful, the view dynamic especially of the sunset and the mountains of northern Kauai. The quality of the food and service was outstanding, and the best bit...we thought it was good value for the money paid.

We had lamb chops and salmon. Both were very well prepared. The pineapple mint drink was very good as well. Would have loved a seat by the window, but still was able to experience the sunset from an inner table. With the condo-like accommodations we stayed at, we actually ended up making a lot of our own meals, so this is what I would suggest as a fancy evening out, perhaps a bit of a splurge. Even though the restaurant was empty (as we arrived very early), we decided not to sit by the window because of the heat/glare from the sunset; the wonderful picture window could definitely use an awning or shades to alleviate some of this!
Our food was variable; the grilled octopus, seared scallops were good but nothing special; however the poached shrimp salad and the wagyu beef were outstanding.

Food and service were outstanding. The noise level, however, was almost unbearable. There were two loud large groups which really made a lot of noise. We were not sitting close to them but we almost couldn't carry on a conversation. The food was superb ((the wagyu filet was one of the best cuts of beef I've had in awhile.) and Sequoia and his colleagues took very good care of us. Another diner came over and remarked that we had the best seat in the house because we were right in front of the windows facing the ocean and mountains and saw the most incredible sunset we'd ever seen! Our meals were fabulous, featuring lots of local touches as well some great Pacific Rim flavors. I had the best Old Fashioned I've ever sipped and each of my daughters got specialty sodas to make their beverages special. The staff, generally, was very attentive and most helpful with the menu. My ONLY complaint about the entire experience is that I ordered my tenderloin medium to medium well -- it arrived rare. I ate the edges, hoping the waiter might return. By the time the bus boy came to pick up our plates -- as both of my daughters were through -- it was really too late to send back the tenderloin.
