Diner Reviews
  • "Our first visit and it was everything the reviews said it was. Great food but a bit expensive for what you get. However, the crispy brussel sprouts are definitely worth trying. Great service…attentive and helpful. Noisy and it wasn't even full while we were there. The design of the restaurant doesn't allow for the noise to be absorbed so you do have to raise your voice to be heard while speaking. It may be a bit better to sit close to the entranceway for a slightly quieter environment."

  • "We have enjoyed Katsuya many times, more than 20 however unless you remember when you start to order, they rush out all the dishes. This sucks. No one wants to be rushed. its not a laker game where you want to rush to your great and it is consistently happening. its one thing to turn tables but that is not what a good first class restaurant should do. Dining is supposed to be a enjoyable relaxing experience, not a fast food deal."

  • "We were in the mood for a light meal and a great martini. Katsuya delivered both. We are very happy customers."

  • "This restaurant is beautiful and the food is great but it gets so loud in there that we had to escape after we ate to some place a lot quieter to be able to relax and hear each other talk. I wish they would put some sound absorbing items on the walls to quiet the place down bit."

  • "Can't say enough how amazing the food was. Best sushi ever!!"

  • "Great evening. Sat in the beautiful back room and ate many small dishes, all excellent. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. Over great experience!"
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "Got the wagyu ribeye, asked for medium rare but received medium to medium well. Though it was still tasty I'd like it to be bloodier. The rock shrimp was good also."
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "Spicy tuna on crispy rice mini-patties, marinated cooked mushroom dish - those are my favorites. It's a bit pricey for what it is; there's a better place up the street without ambience if it's amazing food you're after. But the look of Katsuya and the wonderful service make it a nice choice for special occasions, dates..."

  • "We have been to Katsuya a number of times because the food is excellent. However, every time we go it is so noisy in both rooms that we can't hear each other talk. Also, we tend to eat earlyish--6 or 6:30 and we are always put next to screaming children. We have decided not to go there anymore after this last noisy experience."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "The food is great, the staff are friendly, the atmosphere is classy and vibrant. However there is a price to pay for all this :) If you have a special occasion and don't mind spending a bit more than you usually would, I would highly recommend it. If you are looking for a more causal dining, your checkbook may not be too pleased."

  • "I love the food but i HATE this place. The layout of the main room makes every table in there undesirable with exception of the booths. The chairs and tables are so uncomfortable. I sat with my knee pushed into the leg of a table. The way this place is designed makes it way too loud. The first platform of tables is THE WORST...you get the draft of the front door & tons of people waiting for their reservations; they are always running 30 to 45 mins late. The hostesses are unfriendly & unhelpful. The service is terrible except for the busboys. The waitstaff just plunk stuff down on the table and walk away. The plates are way too big for the tables so you feel like you have to eat fast to make room for your next dish. good food, bad place."

  • "Came back to dine after many years hiatus. Crispy rice with spicy tuna fab. Also a special mushroom dish was delish. Service prompt and the restaurant is pleasant looking."

  • "food was great, service was good. too much noise though, didn't care for Omakase at all though way too over price and not good stuff but loved every thing else, great drink if you go there pic what you like don't fall for omakase "

  • "The food, as usual, as delicious. Our server, Yuli, recommended several dishes & was very helpful & personable. "

  • "After waiting 45 minutes to be seated after our 9pm reservation, Katsuya is definitely going downhill. The food was average and the service was not top notch like it used to be. I've been to Katsuya since day 1 and I think that the service and food has definitely declined. This place is not worth your time if you are looking for a good dining experience. "

  • "This is not really a Japanese restaurant. It is a fun, fusion restaurant in the heart of Brentwood offering a taste of something good for everyone's palate. Start with cocktail: Give me a break..a maraschino in a Manhattan? No Templeton Rye? This is not a serious bar. Our food was tasty. I'll return as others return. I'll return for the tasty food, nice ambiance, convenience to home. I return with the knowledge that every item is wildly overpriced. Yet, I'll return "

  • "The food quality was excellent. I live in Dallas and come to this restaurant every time I visit LA, at least once a month. I've never had a bad meal or service. The quality of raw fish is as good as Tokyo."

  • "Delish! Super nice, romantic, beautiful decor, and sushi was AMAZING! "
    Dined on 5/26/2014
  • "Always a favorite - good, though pricey, sushi. The spicy tuna on crispy rice is good. The sea "baze" is a Szechuan style sea bass that is very good"

  • "we had been to the Hollywood branch of this restaurant several times and decided to try this one as we were unfamiliar with Brentwood. It's a cool space - but very loud. My wife opted to sit at the rear sushi bar - either the chefs are either totally "in the zone" or anti social as the guy standing over us never even acknowledged us once, just kept peeling cucumbers. Food and service were good but probably not a repeat..."

  • "I had mentioned my friend's birthday when I made the reservation and nothing was done about it. Unusual for restaurants in this area!"

  • "This time the fish, usually perfection, just wasn't up to snuff. Oh well. It happens. "

  • "Katsuya has become the "in spot of Brentwood" is well as a gem for consistent great food and service. Reservations are actually honored on time with a minimal wait if ever. The service is excellent and the waiter staff friendly and smart and fun as well. Drinks are excellent, and even for non alcoholics as they have their own Gingerale which is very good. The various Japanese dishes are all good and a wide variety. And of course great people watchin,. Yes, visit often and you can always enjoy a wonderful evening. "

  • "As always a fantastic experience. We were bringing a 2 year old and an infant with 6 adults so we set an early reservation (5:30). They gave us one of the big booths which contained both kids perfectly. Service was patient and attentive. Food was stellar. "

  • "Love the food, and such an interesting menu. The restaurant also has a great vibe! We would definitely go back, but not on a Saturday night. The restaurant is very contemporary, lots of wood, and has nothing to absorb the noise. So, it's not a great place for having a conversation with friends. (and thank goodness, we were only 4 ... if we had a table for 6 it would have been really difficult!) "

  • "waitress was excellent, food was very good and it's a solid restaurant to go to if you can afford a good night out"

  • "Fantastic Japanese cuisine with a hip, fun atmosphere. I'd wanted to try Katsuya for a long time and was not disappointed. The service was quick and friendly with our food arriving "tapas style," but since we planned to share almost everything that was fine. Every dish that we ordered was flavorful and attractive on the plate. We saw a lot of large groups and families but the noise level wasn't too loud, just bright and energetic. No one had to yell to be heard at our table, which is a big plus in my book. You really can't go wrong if you come to Katsuya. Highly recommend!"

  • "Food was great, service on a slower side but still Ok, however noise level made it hard to have any conversation..."

  • "The food is divine, you must try the rock shrimp appetizer. I also highly recommend the corn crunch roll and brussels sprouts."

  • "My girlfriend and unused to enjoy going to Katsuya but this was much different. We got seated at an awful table. We could barely hear each other speaking to one another. The crispy rice is one of our favorites and the rice came out mushy with poor grade tuna on top. We will definitely be going back to our other favorite sushi places before ever returning here. Service was fine - waitress was nice, responsive, and well versed in the menu. "

  • "A group of girlfriends and I went to Katsuya to celebrate an engagement. We totally were unprepared for the family atmosphere right down to several unhappy crying babies, kids buried in their tablets, and tables of teenagers. The food was still good but if you are looking for a grown-up outing, I suggest you hit the Hollywood location."

  • "we had an 8.00 reservation on a fri night and probably waited 30 min for our table. there was a lot of people waiting for a table.the bars are in weird spots so there's not really anywhere to stand to wait for a table. once we were seated, the food was delicious. we had the spicy tuna on crispy rice, yellowtail collar, rock shrimp tempura, yellowtail w/jalepeno, artichokes - maybe some other things but i can't remember. the service was excellent - dishes cleared, water refilled, drink orders taken. the mgr came over to see how we were doing & seemed to genuinely be interested in what we thought. that's the kind of restaurant i want to go to. just come later for dinner or not on a fri or sat night because of the reservation situation"

  • "Overall, we had a very good experience. The food was terrific; the drinks Burning Manderin was fabulous and both my husband and I would highly recommend. our waiter/server was very attentive. The only issue we had was there must have been a problem with the timing, as we were not done with our appetizers and our main course came... we much would have preferred that they noticed the timing better. It is a noisy/vibrant restaurant. We had a Gilt City deal, and thought that it was a very interesting and good menu, and we enjoyed our meal very much"

  • "Katsuya makes the best cocktails I have ever had. The food is excellent. The ambiance and decor are outstanding. It's expensive. $200 for four people, with only two people ordering alcohol. But their Bellinis are amazing....better than Harry's Bar in Venice, where Bellinis originated. The bathroom is worth seeing...Front room is noisier than back, but both are "energetic.""

  • "Best dish we had was the soft shelled crab with crispy spinach. Sunset roll was very good. Their signature dish of spicy tuna on crispy rice cake was just O.K. We ordered about 5 dishes and they brought them all out at once instead of staggering them. But will definitely go back again."
