Diner Reviews
  • "A group of girlfriends and I went to Katsuya to celebrate an engagement. We totally were unprepared for the family atmosphere right down to several unhappy crying babies, kids buried in their tablets, and tables of teenagers. The food was still good but if you are looking for a grown-up outing, I suggest you hit the Hollywood location."

  • "we had an 8.00 reservation on a fri night and probably waited 30 min for our table. there was a lot of people waiting for a table.the bars are in weird spots so there's not really anywhere to stand to wait for a table. once we were seated, the food was delicious. we had the spicy tuna on crispy rice, yellowtail collar, rock shrimp tempura, yellowtail w/jalepeno, artichokes - maybe some other things but i can't remember. the service was excellent - dishes cleared, water refilled, drink orders taken. the mgr came over to see how we were doing & seemed to genuinely be interested in what we thought. that's the kind of restaurant i want to go to. just come later for dinner or not on a fri or sat night because of the reservation situation"

  • "Overall, we had a very good experience. The food was terrific; the drinks Burning Manderin was fabulous and both my husband and I would highly recommend. our waiter/server was very attentive. The only issue we had was there must have been a problem with the timing, as we were not done with our appetizers and our main course came... we much would have preferred that they noticed the timing better. It is a noisy/vibrant restaurant. We had a Gilt City deal, and thought that it was a very interesting and good menu, and we enjoyed our meal very much"

  • "Good overpriced sushi roles. However, way too noisy ."

  • "Katsuya makes the best cocktails I have ever had. The food is excellent. The ambiance and decor are outstanding. It's expensive. $200 for four people, with only two people ordering alcohol. But their Bellinis are amazing....better than Harry's Bar in Venice, where Bellinis originated. The bathroom is worth seeing...Front room is noisier than back, but both are "energetic.""

  • "Best dish we had was the soft shelled crab with crispy spinach. Sunset roll was very good. Their signature dish of spicy tuna on crispy rice cake was just O.K. We ordered about 5 dishes and they brought them all out at once instead of staggering them. But will definitely go back again."

  • "Although a little noisy for my liking, service was flawless...food was great. Very upbeat and vibrant. Server made great suggestions and we ended up loving everything she recommended."

  • "it's pretty but not comfy. it's loud. some of the fish tasted previously frozen. too expensive for so so quality. don't get what all the fuss is about. really. i don't get it."

  • "I love Katsuya! I made are reservation here for 7:30 on Saturday night because I was craving do good sushi (especially their spicy tuna on crispy rice). Even though we had a reservation, we had to wait about 25 minutes for our table. However, the manager was amazing and gave us 2 complimentary appetizers once we were seated to make up for the wait. The food was delicious as normal and the service was its usual high standard. A great night out!"

  • "I love the Katsuya chain of restaurants but for some reason the one in Brentwood is an epic fail every time. Every thing is almost cold (the hot dishes) when it arrives to the table. I just don' understand. The food feels like it has been sitting around a while. Not "fresh". I will continue to go to the other Katsuya's but not the one in Brentwood."

  • "I took my mom here for her birthday (on Valentine's day) and we both loved it. The service was great, we were seated right away (we had a reservation) and the food was amazing. Whatever the waiter recommended should definitely be ordered! It was pretty crowded (obviously because it was a holiday) but our food didn't take long at all. It's expensive but I think it's totally worth it!"

  • "it is indeed a shame when food can be so yummy and the service, although friendly and hospitable, absolutely terrible. nothing came out at the same time - coffee came twenty minutes after dessert - will not be going back again - what a shame:("

  • "We loved each delicious dish but will probably never go there again. The noise level is extreme and we could not talk with each other. Couples texting were probably using it as a conversation."

  • "This may be blasphemy but I was quite underwhelmed by my first time at Katsuya, I like SugarFish way better. The crispy rice with Tuna was amazing. The other dishes were good, but not particularly memorable. We got a couple rolls and a couple items from the hot chicken (tried the fancy mushrooms - interesting texture and flavor, not sure I'd get it again). I do plan to try the original location since I've heard SO much about this place, but for Brentwood, I would go to SugarFish."

  • "The atmosphere is vibrant and fun. It is very busy so make sure to get a reso. They have the classic Katsuya dishes which are all good, but the portion sizes have definitely gone down since back in the day. This place is fun and will always be a "to go" place, but I will always stay reminiscent of the old days in the "whole-in-the-wall" in Studio City with great portions and great prices. I guess everything changes."

  • "Myself along with 8 others went to Katsuya for dinner. We were squeezed in a the back room with a couch, two low lounge chairs and 3 regular chairs, it was very hard to talk to people since the seating was so awkward. The lighting was so poor we couldn't see the menus and had to move around the table to order. The venue was so loud we could barely hear ourselves. We had horrendous service, to the point we would have to ask for drinks and food items multiple times. The bill was split for 2 sets of girls, then the remaining 5 of us, and our portion (for 5 of us) was $700.00, and it was wrong, had to be sent back with the waitress 3 times finally ending us at about $568.00 since half price Saki was still $35!"

  • "Perfectly prepared, served quickly, and delicious. Just what we've come to expect. Hard to get away from faves, but we always try one new dish, and the roasted corn sushi was great."

  • "Katsu-Ya has consistently delicious sushi. I love the Katsu-Ya roll and the spicy tuna on crispy rice. My husband and I had a fun date night. It gets kind of loud but it's part of being in the scene."

  • "First, it took @15 minutes to locate our server to order drinks. Second, soup was not hot. Third, miso cod was dry. We expected cod to be in miso sauce."

  • "I like Katsuya-- food is always good and interesting. We were a table of 4 and while our waitress was excellent, the rest of the wait staff seemed to have been trained at McDonalds............ all our courses arrived at the same time, were not served to the right person, and it felt like "fast food". To their credit, the management made it right, but we went to enjoy each other's company, not have conversations with the management. I like dining when the service is "invisible"........ my last visit the service spoiled the experience. I will go back again-- the food is still worth it, but I hope the staff will be better trained."

  • "This is a very vibrant, energetic restaurant with excellent sashimi and very good sushi rolls. The restaurant was extremely busy on the Saturday night we were there so the only disappointing thing was having to wait 45 minutes past our reservation time for a table. The service was excellent as once we were seated the staff was very attentive and the food arrived very quickly even though the house was packed. Reservations are highly encouraged as this is a very popular place."

  • "The temparature in the restaurant was way too cold for comfort. We pointed this out to the host, who just shook her head. Also, the table was far too small for 6 people and the restaurant could not accommodate, although they could have moved tables together. Chairs are uncomfortable."

  • "Katsuya is a favorite restaurant. Order dishes you can't get anywhere else for the best dining experience. The rock shrimp tempura is amazing so is the lemon salmon roll."

  • "$90 for a business lunch? For two? In my eyes, spending like that had to mean exemplary everything. The location of the place was great, but on top of the meal there was a mandatory $8.00 valet parking charge. I walked in with high expectations. I felt comfortable in the space. The hostess was pleasant and quickly showed us to our table. We took a quick look at the menu and ordered. I thought all the food was very tasty, presented beautifully, but very overpriced. I ordered a spicy tuna over crispy rice dish, similar to one I order at Itsaka-Ya. At the former, I got four pieces for $19; at the latter, six pieces for $14.50? Didn't take much more to convince me that one does not get high value for the price here. Meh."

  • "This restaurant overbooks and has too many tables situated too close to the door and reservation desk. When you object to a table seating assignment the staff is indifferent and tells you that you will have to wait an indeterminate time to Be seated. Made you feel that you should leave and go elsewhere."

  • "I love Katsuya in Studio City but was disappointed by the food and service at the Brentwood location, Not only is the menu different but the rolls that they did have just were not as good. I love sushi and love Katsuya in the valley but won't be coming back here. Very disappointed. There are so many better choices on the Westside."
