  • "Upon arriving, we were warmly welcomed and quickly seated. The food was great- started off with potato latkes and the dumplings which were to die for! The mushroom sauce was amazing and the highlight of the meal. "

  • "Been here several times already and really enjoyed it. The menu is interesting and the food is very good. Service, while usually very nice, was off this time. The server made several errors, including explaining to the kitchen that one of us ordered 2 starters that were to come out as entrees (though perhaps the cook could have noticed it didn't make sense to send out 3 starters followed by 1 entree). Maybe the server was new, though he also seemed a bit indifferent. Still, we'd have tried again, as we do like the place. But we didn't find out until the bill came that they'd just recently stopped taking any cards but Amex. As much as we like the food, this makes us less likely to return. Karloff: please start taking Visa/MC again!"

  • "If you're thinking Eastern European food will be all cabbage and cream sauce, think again. This is a modern interpretation that integrates, yes, cabbage, and kasha, & other staples from "the old country," but updates for contemporary tastes. The vareniks (dumplings) were light & tasty - not the big doughy balls I feared. Trout, served over kasha a carmelized cauliflower, was light & delicious, accented by a mustard sauce. An unexpected bonus: the surprising number of vegetarian, vegan, & g-f selections. Our server was very accommodating & personable. Noise level was quite low when we arrived, with good music playing at a reasonable volume. Room got a little noisier as more tables filled up. Overall, a very good experience. We'll go back."

  • "We were a big group-7 people- and it was spacious and comfortable. The food is great. Piegories were excellent, borscht was great, kasha, chicken , fish. Everything was fresh, home like food. It's great if you want something unusual and close to home."

  • "We took my husband to Karloff's for a Father's Day celebration. We live in Manhattan and wanted to try something different. We started with potato latkes which were superb. I selected the trout, my son had the salmon and my husband chose the beef stroganoff. Although my husband was somewhat disappointed with his selection (he had wanted to have the lamb which was not on the menu), my son and I loved our dishes. They were prepared well, and the presentation was great."

  • "We used to live in Carroll Gardens before Karloff opened and still love the neighborhood, so we come back often. We've passed Karloff and have wanted to try it, but never really had the chance. For Mother's Day, we were looking for something in that area and, since my mother's parents were German and Polish and she loves things like borscht and verenikis, we thought we'd give it a try. Maybe not the smartest idea going somewhere unfamiliar for Mother's Day, but we like to live dangerously. Happily, we had a great time and the food was beyond delicious and portion size was on target. Also, my wife (who's pregnant) asked if the cheese on a dish is pasteurized and, when the server checked, the chef came out to talk to her about it! Nice touch."

  • "Really nice place to go before movie at Cobble Hill Cinema. Super burger, perfectly cooked w interesting garnishes. Excellent, very different leek and kale soup. Overall, a very interesting variety of choices."

  • "Best burger I have had in a long time! The albarino (white wine) was also a winner. The keilbasa/potato croquettes were very good. The salad (poached pear and arugula) was another winner. Not an extensive menu, but well done all around. We didn't have room for dessert."

  • "We were a party of four and we tried different dishes to share. Every plate was incredible, potatoe latkes are great! Also have their homemade ice cream for desert. We will definitely frequent this place!"
