A word from Kapnos
Chef Mike Isabella opened Kapnos along the Fourteenth Street Corridor in July 2013. Isabella draws inspiration from Northern Greece to create a menu of spreads, breads, vegetables and other small plates, including his signature wood-grilled octopus. Two wood-fire grills with rotating spits and a large oven for stone-baked flat breads service the 160-seat restaurant. Guests enjoy carvings from whole animals that have been spit-roasted all day, including lamb, goat, duck, chicken, and suckling pig. Kapnos is open for dinner seven nights a week.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Food was great, what variety and different flavors. The service was very good, with a smile. We ended up ordering less than we expected at a mezze place, the portions were nicely sized. The only issue was the volume - they can install baffles in to reduce the overall noise in their back dining area. The front wasn't loud the last time I dined there."

  • "This was my first visit to Kapnos and I really enjoyed it. My friend and I shared everything including a sampling of the delicious dips - eggplant, chickpea and feta/manouri cheese. All were delicious, but the feta/manouri cheese dip was outstanding! I generally try to steer clear of gluten, but the pita was too good to pass up. Don't miss! The smoked beets were quite good - smoked is not a typical way I eat beets, but really enjoyed them. The octopus was done perfectly (not sure my friend loved it, but...) and the cauliflower was tasty. Overall a very good dining experience and I would definitely recommend it to a friend."

  • "We went this time for Happy Hour and stayed for dinner at the bar. The Happy Hour is spectacular, featuring some of their finest items along with good wines. For dinner we had about 6 different things and ate "tapas" style. Everything was great--we especially liked the octopus and spanakopeta. KAPNOS is a really solid restaurant as is its adjacent little brother, Restaurant G!"

  • "Only negative about this restaurant is parking…incredibly difficult in this neighborhood. However, it was worth the hassle because the food was excellent. My hubby has lived in Crete and he thought our meal was the best Greek food in our area. We both loved the flavors especially the charred octopus and grilled cauliflower. Highly recommend."

  • "Exceptional and creative take on Greek cuisine. If you are adventurous, try the lamb tartare...it is fabulous. Everything is delicious."

  • "Recently went to Kapnos for dinner with a party of 4. We ordered a number of mezze to share. The portions were just the right size to share. One of the diners was pescatarian and there were a lot of options for her. The waitress was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. The food and drinks were very good and they had a lot of non-alcoholic drink choices. Overall, I would recommend Kapnos."

  • "I was in town for the weekend and spotted Kapnos as a Top Chef resturant. I had high hopes but my baked eggs were overlooked. The lamb was flavorful and the dip we ordered was tasty. Eggs seems kind of basic for a place at this level."

  • "I've always wanted to check this place out since it opened - finally did last weekend for brunch and it was great choice. Food was impressive. Get the flat bread, it's really good. The hash was a bit too sour for my taste, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Service was great and the restaurant itself was really nice. Even caught a glimpse of Mike Isabella at the restaurant. I'd like to come back for dinner next time."

  • "There for brunch, we ordered drinks, spreads/bread which were really good. We ordered omelets, scrambled eggs, a side of bacon and lemon potatoes. Neither one of my friends were crazy about the omelets and ate only half. The bacon was pretty greasy/limp and had to be "crisped" up. However, my scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly. But those sad, poor lemon potatoes, they were mushy with flecks of limp tasteless peppers sitting in a pool of water and oil. None of us could stomach them. On the plus side, our server was fantastic and kept our water's filled and drinks replenished. She was the saving grace to our brunch. But all in all I would not recommend this place for brunch. It's a great concept but poor execution with the food."

  • "Food was excellent... starting with the bread and appetizers and interesting drinks.... it is fun to sit at the bar and see the chef in action."

  • "Kapnos has become a favorite place of ours for dinner - the food is consistently delicious, inventive and fresh. The smoked beets, lamb tartar and baby goat are favorites. They have an excellent selection - they have a menu that identifies gluten-free and veggie dishes. Not a wine drinker, but others have always found a good wine that they enjoyed."

  • "Six of us ate at table outside. All the food was great, and all the adults and children were very pleased."

  • "I have been hesitant to try Kapnos out due it being owned by a "celebrity" chef. My concern was that it was just another mediocre restaurant making money off it's chef owner's name. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. I thought everything I ordered was very flavorful and well prepared. It was solid, but certainly did not excel in any way. What really disappointed me about Kapnos was how poor the service was. My waiter didn't even try. We were never once asked how the food was, we had to refill our own wine glasses, and our water glasses were only refilled once during our whole time there. It is terrible service like this that will prevent Kapnos from ever being great and makes the DC food scene so incredibly disappointing."

  • "Have been dying to try this place since it opened, and I finally dined here with the hubby on a random Wednesday night. The food and the service were fantastic. The keftedes (the Wednesday "classic") were delicious and reminded my husband of some of the food he'd enjoyed in Greece years ago. We devoured the grape leaves (dolmades) and the cauliflower side with pistachio and honey. We also ordered a half chicken to share; it was tender and flavorful. The wine list had plenty to choose from; it was not limited to Greek wines. Our waiter and other servers were really fun, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We would definitely come here again."

  • "Kapnos is fabulous; I've been there many times. This time, however, I made a reservation online. When we arrived, they seated us at the bar. They offered to work out another arrangement (i.e. table), but we were short on time and didn't have the flexibility to do that (thus why we made a reservation). In the end, it was fine, but when you make a reservation, you expect a table, not the bar. Perhaps this is something that Open Table needs to adjust or add to its site (i.e. a feature showing that you are reserving a seat at the bar) but in the meantime, Kapnos should not list those spots as available for reservation. I will think twice before making a reservation there again."

  • "Overall, a delicious and memorable meal complimented with tasty and original cocktails. The menu boasts many more appealing choices than the average "small plates" restaurant. The presentations are works of art. At the top the list is the suckling pig - moist, tender, smoky ... honestly, I am still thinking about it. It was that good. The pork is followed closely by the octopus, full of flavor and so very tender. My one food complaint is the grape leaves. They are served a bit too cold making it hard to appreciate their flavor. The restaurant is also noisy, but hopefully you'll be too busy eating to care."

  • "Kapnos takes Greek food to another level. The phyllo pies (duck & cherries and mushroom) were amazing, as was everything else. Had a delicious Tempranillo that I must now find."

  • "Enjoyed a bird's eye view of the kitchen for a great dinner. This team works like clockwork, including wait staff and clearers. In terms of the food, Mike Isabella is a genius . . . Moussaka was terrific and all the dishes combined great flavor profiles in unusual combinations. Grilled lamb that melts in your mouth. You can't go wrong with your choices here."

  • "I really enjoyed this restaurant, the dining experience was outstanding the staff were great in recommending to us what to order and drink. I have never before liked lamb but this experience has changed that for me. Can't wait to return to this establishment and will definitely recommend it to others."

  • "This was the second time dining at Kapnos. The first was great. This time, the service was very poor. The waiter never returned to the table. We were never offered a second drink. It seemed very disorganized and this was a slow night. The food was very good other than the raw dough in the flatbread."

  • "I've been to Kapnos several times now. Each time I have a great experience. The atmosphere is cool without being sleek. The food is delicious. The wine excellent. The service top notch. Like all small plates places in DC, I think you pay a bit much for what you get, but I keep going back to this place for a reason. A+ = suckling pig with orzo."

  • "We had an overall great experience! The lamb and watermelon salad were amazing."

  • "I wasn't thinking and I asked for a table outside - nothing wrong with the outdoors, but I realized later how cool the interior is. Food wise it's small plates so you get to try a lot from the menu. The taramasalata is light and creamy and came with just the right amount of super hot flatbread. We both really liked the ruby red shrimp and I liked the addition of rhubarb. The dolmades were nice - not overly oily, which I can take issue with grape leaves. We also had the falafel, which was very good. The baby goat was alright, but the suckling pig was excellent. As for drinks, I had the whiskey lemonade and my friend had the gin lemonade - the gin one was better in our opinion. Service was relaxed, but mostly attentive."

  • "Service was good overall once we finally got someone to serve us. We waited over 10 minutes just to put in a drink/coffee order because there was a mix-up with the servers. Our new server was still not very enthused about serving us it seemed. Also, while the food was amazing, it came out in a very jumbled order even when we specifically requested one shared plate to be held for dessert."

  • "This is some of the best food I have ever had. The decor is beautiful and fits all occasions. Our waiter was knowledgeable, personable, and fantastic. My only minor critique is the music and even that was negligible. I was blown away by everything."

  • "Vibrant place, food and service were great, but it started out cool and comfortable inside and then get very hot as the room filled up. I don't know if the AC was out or if having the open pit rotisserie generated too much heat, but it was unbearably hot and was getting worse. We could not finish our food because we were sweaty so much. Very uncomfortable and no offers of help or temperature change from the staff. If this is the normal scenario, I would suggest skipping and just having a sandwich at G next door the following day."

  • "Loved Kapnos. Took my family there for a recent visit, who being Greek, enjoyed the quality and variety of the menu. For those who don't know, the menu is a bit distinct. Kapnos' entrées fall somewhere between Tapas and normal sized plates. Very good food, though."

  • "Mike did it again! One look at the menu and we wanted to order pretty much everything. The goat was spectacular, taramosalata a "must have," duck phyllo pie was a joy, and my "I don't like octopus" dining companion fought me for the last bite. I only regret that we weren't there on a Wednesday for the keftedes"

  • "While I would recommend this to a friend because of the yummy food, I would caution them that it is a place one needs to shout to talk to a table mate. So go alone or with no intention of having a conversation."

  • "We like graffitato and had heard great things about Kapnos but the food was so-so 2 out of 5 dishes were good. The restaurant was so loud we couldn't hear ourselves and asked it move outside. Once there the scene was much more pleasant. Dishes were tiny. 12 for an appetizer portion?"
    Dined on 6/16/2014
  • "The wait staff and busboys were not very observant. We had to ask for fresh plates after having appetizer- messy dips. Our table would have benefitted from some wiping between dishes. Dishes were placed clumsily on the table. The beet dish was a complete rip off! Meat dishes were fantastic. An average experience won't be rushing back but glad we tried Kapnos."

  • "I brought my family here for a late Mother's Day dinner. Sat at the large butcher block table right in front of the open kitchen. Our server was Jeff and he provided excellent service and we were very pleased by his fantastic recommendations - Normally I wouldn't order a smoked eggplant spread - but did on his advice and I wasn't disappointed (my new favorite). The suckling pig and baby goat should be a must when you visit. I could have ordered three more plates - easily. A bowl of orzo with cheese for our 6 year old was a nice accommodation and though it is a simple dish, it was simply delicious. I can't wait for my next visit."

  • "I was disappointed when I showed up on time for a reservation and was at first offered seats at the bar - I imagined that the whole point of a reservation was to have a table; generally the bar is a last resort for walk-ins. I asked to wait for a table, but by the time we were finally seated, it was half an hour after the initial reservation time. Our server seemed friendly enough, but we barely saw him. While the food was good, every other aspect wasn't quite up to par; not sure I would return."
