A word from Kapnos
Chef Mike Isabella opened Kapnos along the Fourteenth Street Corridor in July 2013. Isabella draws inspiration from Northern Greece to create a menu of spreads, breads, vegetables and other small plates, including his signature wood-grilled octopus. Two wood-fire grills with rotating spits and a large oven for stone-baked flat breads service the 160-seat restaurant. Guests enjoy carvings from whole animals that have been spit-roasted all day, including lamb, goat, duck, chicken, and suckling pig. Kapnos is open for dinner seven nights a week.Continued

  • "Maybe it was just a bad night for our server (it was Sunday night after all), but I was disappointed with the experience. We felt very rushed and when we asked for recommendations for starters, she responded that "it's all good." Yes, I know that -- I've been there before. But I asked for a recommendation because I genuinely couldn't pick. Our server just seemed disinterested and in a hurry to get us out of there. I usually really enjoy Kapnos, but not this time. Will think twice before booking here again with friends."

  • "Four of us went for restaurant week and even with the limited menu everything we had was very good, no low spots. The spreads, the smoky beets, the lamb tartare, the spanakopita, the bass and the lamb. The noise level was high, but not as bad as some other places. The service is a bit spotty. For the first and second courses the food arrived in waves, but since we were sharing all around that was not a big deal. Still if that were not the case it would be a bit off-putting. Kapnos is on our list for a second visit."

  • "Lovely outdoor dining experience with 2 friends. Appetizer dips and fun cocktails at the bar! Choose the regular menu over the Restaurant Week menu and absolutely loved the charred grilled Octopus and Marinated Lamb. Great experience for diners. Feel sorry for the wait and hostess staff who have to stand/walk on concrete floors, though. Plus, the concrete floors make it super loud. Was quieter outside with the cars!"

  • "A friend and I visited Kapnos for our first time during Restaurant Week 2014. Needless to say, it was one of the worst, if not the worst dining experience I've had in DC over the last 5 years of living here. We hated every dish, our waitress incorrectly described the ingredients in the dishes to us (what if i had an allergy?), and was pushy. Also the restaurant was pretty empty yet they stuck us in a row of small two tops with 3 other parties where we were WAY too close to our neighbors. Overall though, the food was just BAD - which was disappointing and surprising because I love Mike Isabella's other DC restaurants."

  • "They forgot to bring one the dishes I ordered. So, service only so-so. Also, while the wine list is impressive, it skews heavily towards over-priced. Need to add some more moderate options because will lose sales. I would order 2 glasses of an $8-9 glass but I will order only one $11 glass and not order at all a $15 or higher glass."

  • "The food is excellent, as well as the service. However, for restaurant week we were forced into ordering off the same menu which is not customer friendly. They had two options for the week, $34 or $55 option creating the problem - we both had to have the same option. My friend insisted he wanted the $55 so I ended up doing it too. Our restaurant week meal ended up being very expensive when you add in the expensive wine by the glass. As I said, the food is good just expect drop some cash. Plus $15 valet parking - this isn't NYC!"

  • "Went here for restaurant week, did the 5-course menu. Everything was delicious, and although the menu says "small plates", the portions were really enough for 2. The bread for the 1st course spreads was amazing, such that we ate too much of it and were starting to hurt by the 3rd course, but it was worth it to keep on eating. Favorite dishes - the smoked eggplant spread, the roasted duck pie, the mushroom pie, and the spit roasted lamb. I'd heard good things about the octopus, and it was good, just not as good as other items. We had a bottle of Tannat from Greece, which was excellent and reasonable priced. I also enjoyed the rustic/modern decor and good service. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would love to go back."

  • "In a city of Jose Andres, there is a high bar for Mediterranean tapas style food. Unfortunately, Kapnos does not compete. Two of us went for dinner during Restaurant Week and left unimpressed. Two of the biggest let downs were the falafel and baklava - which, if you are going to serve Mediterranean food, you should not mess up. Falafel was over fried and under flavored, borderline tasteless. The baklava is not saturated in honey, as typical baklava is prepared, therefore leaving you with a dry, crunchy dessert. Unlike the falafel, the baklava was over flavored with a savory herb that I still cannot put my finger on, possibly a sister to rosemary. The only saving grace is the spanakopita, a haven amongst the other ill-prepared dishes."

  • "I wanted to love this place...but the food was really disappointing. Although they started strong (hummus and roasted eggplant/pepper served with yummy flatbread for scooping up the dip in the center) those were the only two plates that we ate more than a few bites of. The chicken was under cooked. Potatoes tasted like they were cooked in straight lemon juice. Lamb was unseasoned. My daughter has a heavy sweet tooth, but she didn't take more than 2 bites of the baklava. To be fair, it was restaurant week, so it may not have been a typical week in the kitchen. Friends who we eat with a lot and who have similar tastes have been there before and raved about it...unfortunately we seem to have dined there on a very off night."

  • "First the restaurant is beautiful. It has a great atmosphere. The decorations are lovely. I loved the chandelier made from wine glasses. I would come back to the bar. It was a great bar. Friendly bartenders and good selection. The restaurant was ok. The best choice was the cheese spread, it had a great texture and wonderful spice. Really lovely. The worse was the baklava, my guest said that it tasted like scrapple. Sometimes, you don't need to get inventive. The Spanikopita was ok. It had a lot of fresh leeks and spinach so it made it a touch watery. The service killed it. My waited didn't have that nice touch. He was intrusive. Poor table skills. I am glad I went. I wouldn't go back."

  • "Mike Isabela is the most overrated chef in Washington right now. While Kapnos is a lovely place to look at, the food is bland, boring and overpriced. I love lamb and didn't know that you could ruin it, but Kapnos' was flavorless and overcooked. The giant beans, similarly boring -- ditto the goat and briam (a mix of eggplant and tomato). None of them had a particularly impressive presentation or anything. Yet for this plus baklava -- which was good, but a hard thing to ruin -- we were set back $85. Nor was the service anything special. I've found the same thing at Isabella's Graffiato, where you have to spend your inheritance just to get full. You pay for an "Iron Chef." But it would be nice to get quality and good food in return."

  • "The food is beyond exceptional! If you're looking for the true Greek restaurant experience, then Kapnos is the place to be! The lamb, pork and chicken are slow roasted on a spit over an open flame and then dressed with lemon juice, just like they do in Greece, making the meat succulent and flavorful, with just a hint of smoke from the fire pit. Kapnos blows away every Greek restaurant in not only DC, but probably the US, and maybe even Greece. And don't miss their authentic dips and spreads served with their fresh pita bread made to order from scratch! The wine list was extensive and the staff were extremely polite, knowledgeable, and, most importantly, very attentive! I can't wait to go back!"

  • " We shared two dips, the fresh and delicious Bronzino and potatoes among three of us and were not hungry. The blood orange sherbet was also delicious. The restaurant has a nice wine list, including the Vermentino we drank. The decor is not to my taste -- dark and woodsy as opposed to bright and sunny like the Aegean -- but Kapnos is worth a visit when you're in the mood for good Greek food."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Kapnos. We had the duck and spinach-filled phyllo pastries for appetizers. The duck-filled appetzer was the better and tastier choice of the two. For the main courses, we had the pork and goat which were both good but lacked seasoning for our tastes. We were treated to two glasses of Proseco in honor of our special occasion which was a nice touch. Overall, a solid choice for dinner in an area with multiple dining options."

  • "This small-plates restaurant is the place to go in DC for middle eastern food but I think you need deep pockets. Everything was very good, especially the. lamb, but the bill for the four of us came to $250. That did, however, include a $10 bottle of wine that we paid more than $70 for after markup. So go for the great food and service and forgetabout he price of things."

  • "The food was lacking that flare you normally get when you visit Mike's restaurants. This was not my first time at Kapnos, but it will probably be my last one. The service was mediocre, our waiter didn't bother to check on us after the food runner dropped the second part of our dinner. we were sitting outside, on a slow week night, and I didn't get the feel that the restaurant was busy."

The only issue was the volume - they can install baffles in to reduce the overall noise in their back dining area. The front wasn't loud the last time I dined there."

  • "This was my first visit to Kapnos and I really enjoyed it. My friend and I shared everything including a sampling of the delicious dips - eggplant, chickpea and feta/manouri cheese. All were delicious, but the feta/manouri cheese dip was outstanding! I generally try to steer clear of gluten, but the pita was too good to pass up. Don't miss! The smoked beets were quite good - smoked is not a typical way I eat beets, but really enjoyed them. The octopus was done perfectly (not sure my friend loved it, but...) and the cauliflower was tasty. Overall a very good dining experience and I would definitely recommend it to a friend."

  • "We went this time for Happy Hour and stayed for dinner at the bar. The Happy Hour is spectacular, featuring some of their finest items along with good wines. For dinner we had about 6 different things and ate "tapas" style. Everything was great--we especially liked the octopus and spanakopeta. KAPNOS is a really solid restaurant as is its adjacent little brother, Restaurant G!"

  • "Only negative about this restaurant is parking…incredibly difficult in this neighborhood. However, it was worth the hassle because the food was excellent. My hubby has lived in Crete and he thought our meal was the best Greek food in our area. We both loved the flavors especially the charred octopus and grilled cauliflower. Highly recommend."

  • "Recently went to Kapnos for dinner with a party of 4. We ordered a number of mezze to share. The portions were just the right size to share. One of the diners was pescatarian and there were a lot of options for her. The waitress was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. The food and drinks were very good and they had a lot of non-alcoholic drink choices. Overall, I would recommend Kapnos."

  • "I've always wanted to check this place out since it opened - finally did last weekend for brunch and it was great choice. Food was impressive. Get the flat bread, it's really good. The hash was a bit too sour for my taste, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Service was great and the restaurant itself was really nice. Even caught a glimpse of Mike Isabella at the restaurant. I'd like to come back for dinner next time."
