  • "Looking for a good lunch spot well this is it. I had a business meeting here and it was relatively quite with plenty of room at the table to spread out info. Great place and I look forward to coming back for dinner"

  • "Kanpai is absolutely worth a 1 hour drive or more to get to for out-of-towners. The food, service, and ambiance are remarkable. It looks like brand new construction and is always spiffy clean. There's 60" TVs for those that want to watch sports. There are 4-person booths, open tables, casual bar, sushi bar, and private room options for seating. The staff are very friendly and helpful, especially for making sushi recommendations. Their drinks are a little expensive, but satisfy. Sushi roll ingredients are explicitly defined and priced at reasonable, customary levels. I'm not a fan of everything on the menu, but the Ménage à trois roll is absolutely wonderful. Everyone should try a Ménage à trois!"

  • "We went to Kanpai for a bachelorette party the night the Badgers gained a spot in the final four. My sister (the bride-to-be) is a huge fan and really needed a television to watch the game. We were put in a private back room to celebrate and watch the game - it was truly an ideal experience. Thank you!!"

  • "Nice expanded menu - love the small plates for the "non-sushi" items. We were able to get a good variety and share everything! All the sushi/fish items were very fresh and very yummy! I will come back."

  • "The restaurant was great overall. The saketinis are great...the sexy samurai was delicious but after 3 I would have never known there was alcohol in it. For $9 I would expect a little something and had nothing. The sushi was amazing and there is a stuffed avocado appetizer that is not on the menu but OMG was it great. If they have it on special I would highly recommend it."

  • "Wine, Green Tea, Bimbimbop very hot, two kinds of Maki and green tea ice cream- not too shabby. A fun place before the Rep."

  • "The service was excellent and the good was delicious. The ginger salad was the best (and biggest) I have had in the area. Yum! I highly recommend going for sushi and am looking forward to my next visit."

  • "I love sushi and this place has amazing fresh selections. Huge menu and not too bad on prices. I have been here for lunch and dinner both have great specials. Rolls were delicious and the ginger salads are bigger than in normal sushi restaurants. I will definitely be back many times."

  • "This is some of the best sushi I've had in the Milwaukee area. The service was excellent and the wine list was good. We will definitely come back here."

  • "Nanakusa was one of our favorite places and this was the first time we went under the new Kanpai. The food, ambiance, service were great but a little slow. The price was OK depending upon what your ordered and how hungry your are. I would recommend it and we will go back. Menus hard to read with the plastic on them."

  • "We’ve dined at Kanpai since it opened and it has never been a letdown. Our last visit on Valentine’s Day was no different. The food was great, the servers were friendly. Our only complaint would be that on special event nights the restaurant can get very crowded. We made reservations and were able to seat right away but by the time we were eating almost every seat was full and we almost uncomfortably close to other diners. I still rate Kanpai very highly but would suggest to others that if they want to eat there for the first time one of the event nights isn’t as representative of how intimate and relaxed this restaurant can be."

  • "Went for Galentine's Day, and this is some of the best sushi I've ever had. I'm not a sushi expert, but my friend has worked in a sushi restaurant for 6 years or so, and she even said it was some of the best sushi she's ever had. My new go to spot for sushi. Cute restaurant, friendly staff, overall great experience. Only disappointment, I wish the drink were a little cheaper, mostly so I could try them all!"

  • "Took my gf here Saturday after valentines. Good atmosphere! We were trying a new place and heard good things about this restaurant.. we were not let down! Ordered the California roll and naruto roll and the menage a trois roll.. did not have any complaints on the rolls! All very good!"

  • "What a great night we had! The place was packed but our waiter, Eric, didn't miss a beat! Fantastic service and the food was great as always. Hands down, best sushi in Milwaukee."

  • "Our food was served to us too quickly ... we had the 5 Course Valentines Special - everything but the main course was on our table ... we asked the waiter to put most in a To-Go Container because he brought the main course and there wasn't enough room on our table to enjoy our dinner!! Very Disappointed .... we were celebrating Valentine's Day Special, we purchased (2) of the 5 course dinners, which was ruined by the speedy food delivery!"

  • "My date and I were excited to try a new Milwaukee sushi place for Valentine's Day, as it is our favorite restaurant meal. It may have just been the special day's menu, but we were both quite disappointed. The service was great. The food, on the other hand, was not. Again, it may have simply been the special menu, but the food did not satisfy. Everything seemed to have cream cheese in it. We got the Maki option for our meal, which included 6 rolls, soup and salad. The Maki was not very good. There was little to no fish, and far too much sauce and cream cheese. We could not believe the amount of cream cheese in the rolls! It's also more of a sports bar than a date restaurant. We were both very disapointed and don't think we will be returning."

  • "My family and I frequent Kanpai often as it serves the best sushi around. It located in the theater district of the Third Ward, so it is perfect to catch dinner before or after a show. You don't see many kids in the resturaunt, but if your's like sushi like mine do, don't let that stop you. We always feel welcome with a family of five."

  • "Been here a few times thought I would really y surprise my wife on Valentine's day with her favorite "sushi" really talked it up and from the moment we arrived it went south....without really dissing the place I will say that the service was really really poor!!!! Even the manager didn't know how to explain it."

  • "Very extensive menu, excellent food and presentation, ambiance, and superb service! The very best Japanese / sushi dinner my wife and I have had ANYWHERE else in Milwaukee - we will definitely be back!!"

  • "This was our first time and the food was awesome. We love the Third Ward and now we have a larger selection of restaurants to pick from. The waitress, Veronica was very helpful and checked on us very often. Had a great night and will be back for sure."

  • "Unfortunately the food is way to over priced for the quality. Very Americanized sushi- aoli sauce and mango salsa??? We got our food in 5 minute intervals. All six people got their food at different times and our waitress pored water into a half full cocktail and barely seemed phased. Granted it's winter but there were giant puddles everywhere and the woman's bathroom door was propped open with a garbage can. I would not be surprised if kanpai wasn't here next January."

  • "This was a great experience. We loved the Rock and Roll and the Spicy Spider. Both had a little kick but not too much. The Chicago had smoked salmon in it which was very noticeable. I'd say that one was just okay. Overall great experience."

  • "Our server Eric was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The decor was nice too. My husband enjoyed his sushi and my only complaint is that I didn't like the sauces that were on the maki rolls I ordered. I felt they were to heavy for the tuna and crab, and made it taste more like a tuna salad sandwich than sushi. If I were to go back here I would ask them to hold the sauce. Honestly I think Fujiyama is just as good (if not better) and their prices are a little more reasonable, granted they are not in the Third Ward."

  • "I was nervous as I saw a few negative reviews but I have no complaints. All the sushi was yummy and a vegan friend we were with ordered a bunch of small plates that looked incredible. I tasted a crispy tofu that was in a bowl with a sauce and it was fabulous, and I am not even a vegetarian. The service was good and we really enjoyed the whole dinner."

  • "My wife and I are both sushi lovers. At Kanpai, we ordered 5 rolls: 2 were good, one was OK and the other two were below average. Server was very nice and did a great job with our allergy concerns, but didn't stop by the table enough, forgot about one of our drinks, and one roll was missing an ingredient (not sure if this was his fault or the chef's). We even pressed the button for service, and no one ever came. Atmosphere was great and front of the house was very welcoming. Overall, not sure if we would come back. We had high expectations after hearing good things about Kanpai from experienced diners, but were let down a bit. We paid $85 for average service and average food, and not sure if we'd want to risk it again."

  • "5 of us had a nice lunch at Kanpai. The lunch specials were well priced, fresh and offered a nice variety for our party. The fish cuts are generous. Kanpai has become our go to sushi location in MKE."
