Diner Reviews
  • "Probably the best restaurant in Philly. Can't wait to go back"

  • "Our party ordered one of everything off the brunch menu, including the hummus tasting platter. Atmosphere is bright and Every.Single.Dish. was delicious. Fried cheese and pumpkin feta hummus were particular favorites. The french press coffee is also amazing. Staff was attentive and kind - even let us stay out the course of our four bottles of champagne. I can't wait to go again for dinner!"

  • "The food here is always marvelous. The service for brunch was exceptionally slow. "

  • "I treasured the quality of the food and service at this restaurant. The prices were very reasonable. My only criticism was the atmosphere--far too crowded and noisy for my taste...I prefer a much quieter environment. I realize that there are many others who enjoy a loud, energetic environment..."

  • "I love this place. I take everyone who visits me to Kanella. A Philly gem."

  • "This place is a neighborhood regular for us and has never disappointed after dozens of trips. Excellent, varied and interesting ingredients simply and thoughtfully prepared, spiced perfectly, and always delicious. Service is always expert and friendly. Servers that don't measure up (it happens!) don't last long. It's small and when full (always) it can be very noisy, but in a fun way. For this reason it's not a great place for a special romantic dinner. Best change to enjoy the place at a lower level of energy is toward the end of lunch service on the weekend. You will enjoy and almost empty place while never being rushed to leave. The chef clearly loves what he's doing and it shows. Always busy--book early or you will be disappointed. "

  • "Went to Kanella for my wife's birthday and had a great time. The food was creatively prepared and very good, service was excellent. It's a relatively small space and it gets very crowded and noisy. Even so, it was a very pleasant experience."

  • "We go to Kanella for brunch whenever we visit Philly--at least once a year. The food is unbelievably delicious, and the service is lovely. Most servers appear to be Greek and truly believe in their food--as they should. One gentleman sought me out to commend me for ordering honey alongside my meal--he said it was a traditional way to enjoy it. Eating here is such a pleasure!"

  • "Could be more cohesive, lots of separated flavours quite unlike authentic Greek or Cypriot food."

  • "From the first meal here, I have always found the menu to be completely satisfying. No items with rich, heavy sauces with too many calories, but every dish is dependably delicious. Noise level is a bit of a problem, and that is the only negative that I can think of."

  • "I had lamb kofta over white beans for brunch. I didn't expect much more than a tasty lamb hamburger but the seasoning made the flavors pop out. My guest had the basic Cyprus breakfast with simple fried eggs. The first thing she said after tasting them was "how do they make these eggs so good?" Ended with Greek coffee and a dense date torte than was rich, flavorful and not too sugary sweet. Cozy, rustic décor (no blue walls, pictures of the Parthenon, Apollo or Athens) and excellent service."

  • "The quality and variety of food offered at Kanella is always great. My boyfriend and I went here for our anniversary and loved everything we ordered. He's typically not super-adventurous when it comes to food, but everything iss so delicious here, that the menu is full of safe bets. He had lamb and I had rabbit - was not disappointed! The ambiance could be better - it's better for a night out with a group of friends than a romantic evening, but the prices and BYO status of this place more than make up for this."

  • "It's easy to tell that everything that goes into the food they serve is well thought out. Th combination of spices, meat, wraps and just everything is fantastic. The portions are just the right size. The servers really take time to explain the menu and are very friendly. It's really worth going back to this place."

  • "A wonderful neighborhood gem with beautiful dishes of wonderful Mediterranean creations. Definitely lives up to its reputation and then some. Don't miss it; quite the crowd-pleaser.!"

  • "The food is excellent at this restaurant. We have dined here multiple times. We decided to take two friends from out of town here. They loved it. The service was very slow! The waitress asked if we wanted our pitas ahead of time before our salads. Instead the salads came first and then the pitas. Disappointing. Had to wait a long time for our check and they never asked us how our meal was."

  • "food was unique and good, though selection was limited. Check the menu on line to see if this fits your palate. Service was fast. Make sure to make reservations since this is a small restaurant."

  • "Kanella served delicious food in a cozy atmosphere. There wasn't anything that I didn't enjoy while I was there. I ordered the Cyprus breakfast and it was amazing! I highly recommend Kanella to everyone."

  • "Had brunch here this past weekend, my third time at the restaurant for brunch. Ordered a dish I had before (Shakshouka, apologies if misspelled) but this time it didn't resemble what I remembered and I didn't enjoy it very much. Our waiter was seemed new, he forgot the specials mid sentence and forgot to add a side I requested (or it may have been the chef's mistake?) Still highly recommend this restaurant overall."

  • "Although I don't often think of Greek food for brunch, our meal was surprisingly yummy. We started with the special dips of the day and this is where they shine. The pita was soft and scrumptious and the dips were tasty and extremely well balanced. We each has one of the egg dishes and enjoyed them immensely. If you like Greek food, try it for Brunch!"

  • "Excellent food and service. The menu felt truly authentic to the greek style as well as the restaurants decor. Though the spacing felt cramped, the dinner was certainly enjoyable. A fantastic BYO, one that has consistently put out high quality food on all occasions that we've dined there. Would definitely recommend it!!!"

  • "Service is friendly, knowledgable, prompt and complete. Food was fantastic. Dips of the day, calamari, lamb dumplings.....Seriously wanted to lick the leftover sauce off of the plate! This was about my 6th times there and it never disappoints!"

  • "I have been waiting to try this cute byob Greek place for a while and sure glad I did! It would be great for groups as well as romantic dates. Our server seemed a little rushed or rushing us?, which was a little annoying. We really enjoyed the calamari appetizer lightly fried to perfection. My friend ordered the lamb kofta which I thought was extremely salty. I had the whole branzino, a little small in size considering the price... but simply delicious and aromatic with all the stuffed herbs. I will definitely go back on a beautiful spring day and sit outside!"

  • "Kanella is the best. The chef, Konstantinos Pitsillides creates fresh, interesting and delicious dishes that always make me question why don't eat there even more often than we do. Moreover, he never fails to visit our table and make us feel special. Wait staff are warm, friendly and knowledgeable."

  • "We were visiting Philly for a weekend and heard great things about Kanella. We could only get a very early reservation but weren't the only ones dining at 5:30 pm. Service was a bit rushed and tables turned quickly. The food was fresh and nicely presented. Flavors were authentic but nothing extraordinary. A very nice dinner and don't think you can go wrong choosing Kanella."

  • "A lovely little BYOB restaurant, low key atmosphere serving wonderful fresh bright flavors well prepared and attentively served. Kanella platter with a variety of salad samplings excellent for a shared starter. Entrees - Flat bread appetizer for her, Whole branzino fish for him. Whole fish was expertly fillet by our server at the table with little fuss or muss. Orange pistachio cake with cardamon ice cream made a perfect desert. Overall cozy even w/ table close together - like you need to move the tables to get into sit down on the banquet. A great meal - every time. Greece is my favorite vacation spot. Kanella is a lovely culinary flash back. Definitely recommended."

  • "Have been going here for 5 years now and as usual everything was great. Had the grilled octopus for the first time and loved it, the Kanella platter was great. Had the quail special with lentils, wild rice and mushrooms and was one of the best things I have gotten here. My gf had the ravioli which was cooked perfectly, the sauce and everything that came with it was really tasty. Lemon tart and other dessert which I cannot spell were both very good, tart especially. Service is always friendly and professional without being stuffy or overbearing. The owner/chef was out talking to customers. Highly recommended."

  • "Food was great! Only downside is that the restaurant is small so there aren't many reservations and even then there was a wait."
