  • "We have always loved Kanella in the past. On four occasions, the food we ate at Kanella was delicious. So we were looking forward to sampling the Sunday Pri-Fix Mezze special for the first time. But, we were terribly disappointed. The food was mediocre, at best. It felt as though we were being served the week's bad leftovers. The very first dish that came out was served with completely stale bread (at least 3 days old) and the meal went on from there. We are sad that this experience has clouded our appreciation for Kanella."

  • "We loved eating at Kanella! The Sunday mezze dinner was outstanding: plentiful, varied, delicious! The staff was warm and friendly and knowledgable about the food. It's a BYOB so the price stays reasonable. Vegetarians and meat eaters both found terrific variety. Desserts were also wonderful: the lemon tart, semolina cake, and baklava were all perfect! We'll return often."

  • "The food at Kanella is at its worst still excellent. At its best you wonder if the chefs secretly put tincture of opium into it. The service is really good because the wait staff are all knowledgeable and make excellent recommendations. They are also attentive without being overbearing, always a plus."

  • "We have been to Kanella before and enjoyed our time there. On July 16th we were very disappointed. We were taking friends there who have never been before. The main problem was our service was terrible. Our waiter was extremely inattentive- we had to ask him to take our order, he put our white wine in an ice bucket away from our table and only came by once to ask if we wanted more. When I asked him for things, he seemed to be annoyed. My particular dish, red snapper, I did not like, but everyone else really enjoyed their meals. It was quite noisy and difficult to hear our friends. I would go back to Kanella again, but if we have a similar experience, that will be it."

  • "I took my parents here who were visiting from out of town. Excellent service and food as always. You can never go wrong. It is a small restaurant and it was loud. The server was good, spoke fast and was loud as well. Keep it up Kanella. I will always come back here for Greek food. If you like or love Greek food like I do - I highly recommend this restaurant. Please be aware it is a BYOB."

  • "My daughter and I went to the Sunday night Chef tasting menu and we were not disappointed. Mostly, we were too full. Each plate was unique and interesting and the server was helpful in guiding us from the start. He recommended one of us get the vegetarian choice and one the meat and share so we would have all of the tastes. The price was perfect and the outdoor dining blended perfectly with the food. I highly recommend this place and have only eaten there twice but there is more to come."

  • "Delicious! I picked this to celebrate my husband's birthday and was not disappointed! More importantly, neither was he, which is what I was worried about since I know he likes Estia a lot. It's not nearly as fancy as Estia, but it's still great in its own right. It's a lot less expensive, and with excellent service and amazing food. There were really some interesting dishes and ingredients/flavor combinations. The grilled octopus was delicious. I would recommend ordering more appetizers than main dishes. It's all about the apps with Greek food I feel like anywhere you go. We got the grilled octopus, kanella platter, and Greek salad. Our waiter was great too- cleaning our table and resetting our silverware after each course. Left stuffed!"

  • "We've been there twice in the past year, and they do an outstanding job with fish! I usually avoid swordfish, because it's so often overcooked, but I've had two swordfish entrees that were cooked perfectly. My husband loved his whole bronzino, too. Appetizer dips were great and different than what you get everywhere else (loved the pumpkin and feta). It's a very small restaurant, and thus a bit noisy, but the food makes it a great dining experience."

  • "I went here for brunch with my sisters, who were in town for the weekend. We got a seat outside, which was nice save for the decline of the sidewalk. Our waiter was really nice and attentive, but at the end of the meal he overcharged us by $3, which definitely taints his service in our eyes (even though the matter was sorted out). The fried potatoes were amazing! My sister got the lamb flatbread and it took all of my willpower not to take her dish...and I'm a vegetarian. I had the falafel sandwich which was okay...it tasted nice and fresh. My sister had the cod special, which she said was a little too salty. I think this place is great for meat eaters though--everything sounded so delicious!"

  • "Went to Kanella for my birthday and it did not disappoint! My husband and daughter and I had different appetizers and main dishes and ALL of them were marvelous. Particularly recommend the appetizer platter, which I had as my main course. Lots of vegetarian options. Also, the date and chocolate cake is to die for! WONDERFUL dinner and fantastic service! I usually don't rave about restaurants, but this was really worth it."

  • "Went to Kanella for Sunday brunch with a friend. Great place with delicious food-got the lamb flat bread. Cypriot fair with other middle eastern influence is unique to the city. Would recommend sitting inside to enjoy the old-world ambience rather than outside, as the sidewalk can be congested and tables were wobbly. The server moved us inside upon requst. BYO is always nice. Would love to go back!"

  • "The food is wonderful. No question. But, the noise is overwhelming, with tables close together. We had large group right behind us with joyful but loud conversation, and table next to us had person with piercing voice who just never seemed to eat. We go for the food, which is superb, but not for the ambiance. I wish they would try some sound-mitigation decorating techniques."

Portions were a little on the small side but when splitting multiple appetizers and main dishes between 5 people everyone still leaves full. The place was crowded and lively but that just added to the ambiance. It's a BYO so remember to bring plenty of wine!"

  • "After hearing so much about their great brunch, I thought I was in for a great experience... This place is awful, from the boring food (salt please?) to the dirty wall I had to sit beside. I also watched my server eat food of the line & wipe this mouth with his hand. This is the loudest restaurant I have ever been to which normally wouldn't have bothered me but this was over the top. I would never recommend this place & I will never go back."

Although I'm used to noisy restaurants, I think this was the loudest place in which I've ever had a meal. The noise was overwhelming and really interfered with our enjoyment of the meal. Would I return? Possibly, but only during off hours or perhaps at an outdoor table. "

  • "The menu was varied from skate to swordfish to quail. There were menu items to suit every taste. The waiter said the rabbit tonight was out of this world. I told him I've never had rabbit before and I wasn't so sure I'd like it. He said to trust him, so I ordered the rabbit. Wow, better than he said. A whole hind leg that was cooked to perfection along with a sauce to die for. Our entire party of six was totally pleased with their meals and I am so glad that I took the step to try the rabbit. To make it even better, this restaurant is a BYOB."

  • "I brought my parents and fiance here for my birthday dinner after I was unable to book reservations at my favorite restaurant in Society Hill, and I sure didn't regret it! Each of us ordered a different entree, and every single plate was stellar. I had the summer fisherman's stew, and the skate pulled apart like a piece of mozzarella! So rich and satisfying. My dad had the quail special and couldn't stop talking about it. With one shared appetizer for the table and two shared desserts at the end we were all full and happy. My only criticism is that the space was a bit tight, and our server's attention seemed to be stretched a little thin. That said, it was a very pleasant atmosphere, and the bright, simple decor felt authentic and charming."

  • "Visiting Kanella pretty often (maybe not as often as we would like!), this time we went for lunch on a Saturday morning. We ordered trio salad, chicken kebab and the day's special which was a tuna steak. It never ceases to amaze me how the chef, Konstantinos (who values personal connection with the customers), can add novel taste dimensions on simple recipes and ingredients such as those used by Greek-Mediterannean cuisine. All three dishes were exceptional, very well balanced, I literally drool as I recall the experience... And of course, for desert we had baklava and probably the best galaktompoureko I have tried anywhere in the world, including its birthplace (and mine!), Greece. Never miss the opportunity to grab one! "

  • "First time dining for Saturday brunch, hubby and teenage daughter enjoyed every minute. We had the tasting platter and Greek salad to share, then the lamb topped flatbread, burger and the kebobs.... Best ever. Service exceptional, met owner as I ordered another dish first and it was myistake... He quickly accommodated my taste and the only missing ingredient from this awesome lunch was wine... It was just too hot and we had much walking to do. Will definitely go back and highly recommend! "

  • "We had made reservations but had to wait unusually long to be seated outside, even though there was a free table out all the time. Weather was great so we didn't really mind. Service was good and we ordered 3 things of the menu: - 3 dips with pita which was wasn't that great except the butternut squash one which was excellent. - the kanella platter which I would recommend instead of the above item. All items were delicious. - the organic lamb burger with mint yogurt was the winner! This was the most delicious lamb patty I've ever had, and this is coming from an Indian dude. It was so damn good we ordered another even though we were full. - dessert was the homemade ice cream. It was alright. Will return for sure when we visit Philly."

  • "This was my first visit to Kanella, and I was blown away by the experience. Before being seated, I saw an employee walk an elderly woman to a cab with a newspaper over her head to shield her from the pouring rain. The food was incredible, from the dips of the day to the swordfish. The restaurant felt spacious, but also energetic. During the meal, I watched the owner walk around talking to various customers, while letting his daughter walk around and play outside. It was adorable. But what really won me over was the enthusiasm and care we received from our waiter and hostess. Our waiter was fantastic - charismatic, timely, and knowledgeable. The hostess then agreed to take our picture inside and outside of the restaurant. Great experience!"
