Diner Reviews
  • "We love to visit Kalina. The food and service were wonderful as always. They even pay attention to little details such as polishing the silverware. We also particularly enjoy the very low noise level in the restaurant. Even when it is packed, you can easily have a conversation. Highly recommend this place!"

  • "This time I visited the restaurant with another couple. We all enjoyed the food and had different fares for all of us."

  • "Went to Kalina's for our second visit, had VLADIMIR'S SPECIAL for appraiser which we had had on our first visit since it is a sampling of their appetizer menu, it was excellent as we remembered from fist visit. We had the VENIGRET, and RED BEETS BORSCHT for salad and the beef stroganoff and VARENIKI - UKRAINIAN DUMPLINGS for our mains. The stroganoff was excellent, the dumplings a bit disappointing, although well prepared and flavored, a bit bland for a main, bad choice on my part. Service was attentive without being annoying, refills of water, bread and butter without having to ask. Pricing was a bit pricey, but probably as one should expect for a specially type restaurant."

  • "We had a delicious eggplant salad and Monte Cristo Sandwich for lunch. Look forward to our next occasion. Interesting menu with a variety of foods for the carnivore and herbivore alike. Great service from Carlos."

  • "This was the first time eating at Kalina and it was a culinary treat. While Russian cusine tends to be on the heavy side, the dishes were very tasty and the variety extremely good. We both had the prefix menu which was reasonable and had more food than imaginable. The service was great though the restaurant was not very busy as it was on a Tuesday. "

  • "If you have not tried Kalina, you owe yourself a visit. You can experience some of the best Russian cuisine at most affordable prices. Start with the Herring in a Fur Coat and then have either the Pelmeni or Beef Stroganov -- and you will not be disappointed. The best feature is bringing your own wine -- with no corkage fee. That beats the 300-400% mark-up at most restaurants in Tucson (and anywhere else for that matter)! So, how can you beat great Russian food with your own favorite wine? You can't! "

  • "The ambience in this hidden gem is lovely & unpretentious. I loved the variety of delicate plates on the white linen tables. Igor delivered the best service: he was attentive, not overbearing. He was sweet, not syrupy. He was serving other patrons, but I still felt important. For my Russian meal, I had Chicken Kiev, potatoes, & a vegetable. It was all excellent. The eggplant salad was amazing. The hot items were evenly hot. It was all delicious, fresh, expertly cooked, & prepared with care. A basket of warm breads hit the spot, & to top it all off, I had a plate of yummy cookies. You can BYOB, with no corkage fee. Kudos to the owner/chef and staff. I shall return for the afternoon Russian tea service; I know it will be a real delight."

  • "This visit, for the first time, we heard Natasha's mother play the piano. What a wonderful treat. She is an accomplished and talented classical pianist who played beautiful music for our enjoyment. Not only did we take pleasure in the food but also in the wonderful music. Thanks for a special evening."

  • "Kalina is a cozy neighborhood restaurant with very attentive staff. We love that it's BYOB and that they don't charge a corking fee. The waiter was very gracious about opening our wine bottles, bringing us multiple glasses so that we could taste both wines on the table, and keeping our glasses filled. I have been here for lunch, always order a bowl of the yummy borscht which is a very hearty vegetable soup. (Kalina serves hot borscht in winter and cold borscht in summer.) This was our first visit for dinner; everyone at our table of four ordered the Beef Stroganoff, and all were in agreement that it was quite good. We're looking forward to a return visit to try other entrees on the menu."

  • "Really enjoyed our evening. From the appetizers, to the superb house salad, to the outstanding entrees,.... all were great!! More than just a neighborhood gem -- it's the only Russian restaurant in Tucson. If you're looking for something different and delicious, this is the place. Another added bonus: you can bring your own wine without any corkage fee (since they do not sell any liquor). What a joy to not have to pay the requisite 300+% mark-up that is found in most restaurants here and throughout the US."

  • "I have never had russian food before so I chose this place as a new food adventure. Turned out to be a great idea. The food was delicious and I would love to have it again. The waitstaff was polite and attentive. The restaurant itself is a little cluttered and confused but the overall experience was great. O plan on going back."

  • "It's nice to have a Russian Restaurant in town. It's the only one. They haven't been in this location too long and I think they are doing well for the amount of time they have been there. The gentleman playing the guitar is an added plus. He was wonderful; we can't rave about him enough. In time we hope to rave about the restaurant too."

  • "The tea, appetizers, and salads were very good. We are intrigued to try brunch sometime soon. Recommend the cabbage piroshky and herring dish. Great price and excellent service!"

  • "Sunday brunch items were overly rich, with nothing heart healthy available. While the original offerings were tasty and diverse, virtually everything disappeared and then was not replaced for at least a half hour as diners awaited the arrival of anything! It is nice to be able to BYOB. Space is extremely cramped and not able to accommodate both diners and a buffet area. While the overall concept is good, it needs a lot of work to be enjoyable for guests."

  • "I took my son and daughter there on a weekday night. We got there about 7,were seated immediately (might not have had so much luck if we'd come later). Waiter was nice, service was fast. I had chicken kiev, which was very good although not enough for my appetite (fortunately, we'd had a large dose of appetizers). My son had beef stroganoff, which he liked."

  • "We have been here twice and my daughters both loved it, as did I. The food was excellent and the service outstanding. We will be back again. This is one of the few restaurants in Tucson where you can actually have a conversation, because the background music is actually really 'background'. I appreciate that. We had tea both times and it was so nice to be able to choose the components. I really never knew what Russian food was and I was quite pleasantly surprised to enjoy it so much. The menu offers lots of choices, too."

  • "Wonderful, charming Russian restaurant. Food was delicious and well presented. Everyone enjoyed their different entrees: Chicken Kiev, Pork Moscovite and Beef Stroganoff with three side dishes. Service was good and attentive. Definitely a good dining experience!"

  • "Step into this cozy restaurant and be prepared to be waited on by the most sincere, eager-to-please servers in town. The prices are great, and this is a unique opportunity to try something you've never had - from borsht to peloshkis. For less adventurous diners, there are standbys like beef stroganoff and stuffed peppers. Tea service is available any time, and it includes a variety of items and an incredible pot of tea for $15. All of the meals are filling and well-prepared. A bonus: Bring your own alcohol and you won't be charged a corking fee."

  • "Lovely Sunday Brunch. Lots of delicious items - especially the smoked salmon, fresh omelets and blintzes, good crisp bacon, stuffed eggs, cookies, etc. Nothing was poor, so enjoy and get seconds of your favorites. Most items were light on sugar, salt, fat and carbs - which we really enjoyed. Made it so easys to try almost everything they served. Nice that we could bring our own good white wine to drink with the meal. ENJOY!!!"

  • "We had looked Kalina's up on the net as my fiancé had a craving for Russian food. We took our family for my father's 77th birthday. It's in a shopping center (but don't let that fool you), and is pretty small. They have a good number of tables, well spaced, and the atmosphere is inviting and pretty quiet. On this evening, there were 2 other largish parties (6 and 5) which made it louder than I would expect it normally is; this made it really hard for my dad, as he is elderly and hard of hearing. The décor is nice, simple, the tea services on display; it is clean. The food is marvelous. We had the stroganoff, chicken kiev, and chicken special. Everything was fresh, seasoned perfectly, and very tasty. You can tell all food is homemade."

  • "I really loved Kalina. The ambiance was peaceful, the waitstaff attentive, but not intrusive and the food was wonderful. The piroshki were delicious, but filling, so perhaps next time I'll just order the main course. The borscht was excellent. I had to take half the Stroganoff home, but it was just as good the next day reheated. The eggplant salad was a little bland. The pot of plum oolong was perfect for two people. This is a very tiny restaurant, so I would recommend reservations, just in case. Overall this was a great dining experience and I'll be back."

  • "From the attentive servers to the ever-present chef/owner, Kalina stands out in Tucson's restaurant scene. As the only Russian restaurant in town, Kalina serves up excellent Siberian Pelmeni (lamb dumplings); several salads; chicken Kiev; borscht; and always offers high tea, Russian-style. The reasonable prices and Kalina's BYOB policy (with no corking fee) adds to the attraction, especially in today's tough economic climate."

  • "The food at Kalina is authentic and delicious, and the service is excellent. When my dinner companion was unsure if he'd like the tongue appetizer special (he loved it!), our waitress offered to let him try the dish for free. The only drawback to Kalina is the cramped, one-room dining area; you won't find a quiet, private dining experience here. However, as word of this fantastic, new restaurant spreads, hopefully the owners can expand to a larger space."

  • "We really enjoyed finding a Russian restaurant - especially one where you could bring your own wine!! We'd eat out more if BYO were more widely available in Tucson."
