Diner Reviews
  • "We had sushi and the quality of the sushi was GREAT! The sushi is Japanese style so the rice is overbearing and authentic. Definitely going again! They also have a sushi lunch special for $20! GREAT DEAL!"

  • "It isn't the fanciest place ever built, but it was surprisingly good. The service was exceptional, and the food was surprisingly good. One thing I would recommend against is the house red - it really was awful and I would pick something else for sure. I am not a wine snob, and I can barely tell any wines apart -- so if I am telling that this wine is bad please take heed! The restaurant was great however, and the service was top-notch!"

  • "For the past couple of years we make sure we go to Kai while we are in Maui. Great sushi and a relaxed setting! Great take out too!"

  • "the sashimi was very good but the rest was poor: sushi rolls only ok, vegetable robata platter under cooked, beef robata shewers overcooked. We sat outside which was a bad choice: bright lights and terrible decor"

  • "While the food here was pretty good, every other aspect of this place was awful. No ambiance, no customers, really strange hostess and waitress (same woman). Food all came at once except one dish that arrived pretty much while we were leaving - so bad prep time there, as if they forgot about it. Had read reviews before going, which were sort of half good half bad. DO NOT GO HERE. Instead choose Morimoto or others nearby."

  • "The food while good did not knock one's socks off. Felt like a strip mall sushi place. Service was prompt. Generally a good experience on two visits."

  • "Great FRESH sushi and the best steak teriyaki we have had. No atmosphere but great food!!"

  • "Our booth was cozy and our food came out quick. However, 2 larger parties arrived and then we got put on a slow wait for a additional order and we canceled it cause it took way too long."

  • "Best Japanese restaurant we've dined at in a while. Sashimi was outstanding and so were the sushi rolls. We also had the feature fish. Everything was prepared to perfection. We have already made arrangements to come back. Definitely one of our favorite restaurants in Wailea."

  • "Hostess was less than welcoming, and could not prioritize nor smile, but once past that, it was all good from there. Food selection was amazing, and tastes even better."

  • "Whenever visiting Maui, Kai is a stop for us. The fish is always incredibly fresh and the service is excellent as well. I can't say what was the best because everything was really delicious!"

  • "Top notch Sushi - staff/owners were great. Highly recommend."

  • "The food was awesome, the only thing that I could see that needs some work is the timing of food, my appetizer came out had a few bits, then my salad, didn't finsh my salad then my dinner came out. Tables are small needed to constantly make room for everything to fit. Other than that great service. ."

  • "The food was great! My 2nd trip in one week and the food was very consistent and very delicious. The service was ok but they had two very large groups and people kept coming in."

  • "Food was great! Need more advertising. Didn't know it was there"

  • "the sushi was yummy, the service was great do not get the edamame you should definitely try this restaurant :)"

  • "This is an absolutely outstanding gem, tucked into a small shopping center amid the hotels along the Wailea coastline. (There is no view of the ocean.) The service and food were phenomenal, and this restaurant is now on my 'must do' list every time I return to Maui - often as it turns out. The wait staff was just terrific. The only upgrade needed is a sushi bar, where one can chat with the chefs, if that is something you like to do (I do), but this in no way detracts from the fantastic meal and experience. The fresh seafood and awesome attention make Kai Wailea one of the best sushi meals I've had ever -including Tokyo."

  • "We enjoyed the really crispy onion rings; had to ordered another plate. Also recommend the Japanese Buffalo Wings (crispy and spicy) and the Teriyaki Beef."

  • "The food here is DELICICIOUS! I was quite surprised because it's quite a small looking restaurant compared to some of the other, more expensive, places on the Shops @ Wailea plaza. It is tapas style dining and so my husband and I tried many different dishes. The Robata-Yaki plate was so flavorsome and all of the food was beautifully presented. We will definitely dine here again if we are back in the area. Thanks Kai!"

  • "We were so delighted when we ate at Kai. Living in the San Francisco bay area, we're pretty spoiled with excellent Japanese food. At Kai, we found the sashimi extremely fresh, the best miso soup we've ever had and the kids had delicious agedashi tofu, udon and yakitori. They also had my favorite cold sake, which rounded out the meal perfectly."

  • "The fish here was very fresh and the staff was very friendly. They have a good selection for kids too. A very good place to get away from the hotel and have a good quality meal."
    Dined on 8/17/2013
  • "I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. The food was very average and way overpriced, even for a resort."
    Dined on 8/11/2013
  • "Average Japanese food. Had the California Roll, pickled Japanese vegetables, seaweed salad and the teriyaki beef. Only the teriyaki beef stood out. Service wasn't bad for me as I was the second to be seated for lunch. Others who came in after me had longer waits as there was only one server."
    Dined on 7/21/2013
  • "We enjoyed our meal here- but the service felt rushed. All of our food came out at once, and then our waiter was on to the next table. If you're looking for good quick sushi this place is good, if you are looking for a romantic meal out like we were this is not it."

  • "staying @ wailea marriott, and this great japanese place was walking distance. the food was great, staff was super nice and fast, when in maui, we would eat here again."

  • "Best Miso Soup! Garlic Rock Shrimp Appetizer & the spicy tuna with Shrimp Roll were awesome."
    Dined on 4/2/2013
  • "The food was quite good. There was a problem in the kitchen, however, and it took about one hour for the food to arrive. Also, this Japanese restaurant was "out of" Miso soup--which seemed unusual at 8:30 pm. The server was very polite and apologetic but this did not really compensate for the restaurant's troubles. Your server was excellent and apologetic but would not return."
    Dined on 3/28/2013
  • "The owner was very nice and the decor looked great for an authentic Japanese meal. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the rest. The sushi was mushy with little fish. The skewers were overlooked and dry."
    Dined on 3/24/2013
  • "Great food, nice atmosphere, but reeeeeally expensive, like $20 rainbow roll and $61 Saki expensive. I think they could draw more customers at a lower price point (the place never had more than 10 tables seated that I saw)."
    Dined on 3/8/2013
  • "Not great. Overpriced average sushi. The host was very nice and our server was adequate, food arrived quickly. But it was quite flavorless, and for those prices, it should be the best sushi I've ever had, and it wasn't."
    Dined on 2/15/2013
  • "priced way too high for the quality of food and service."
    Dined on 1/29/2013
  • "Very unique sushi rolls including a very different and flavorful vegetarian kula roll that was delicious."
    Dined on 1/19/2013
  • "Very good sushi rolls. Miso soup and edamame also good. Waitress quite busy but gave good service. Will likely go back."
    Dined on 1/9/2013
  • "While the food was good, the menu selection was very limited for lunch. The dinner menu, while a bit larger, was still rather limited. The service was very good, but there were very few customers, which may be reason it was so quiet. The decor was slick and clean and very Asian, which was nice."

  • "Sushi was very fresh. We decided to cancel an earlier reservation at a higher rated Sushi restaurant. This was a last minute booking through Open Table. We were pleasantly surprised and happy with choice."

  • "My family of 6 had a very nice meal. We had an outstanding server who paid particular attention to my 11, 9 and 6 year old granddaughters. We would return to the restaurant."
    Dined on 12/24/2012
  • "very pricey for the amount of food you get. the robata-yaki was especially bad. don't bother with it. the wailea roll, while very tasty, didn't live up to the portion size they advertized. they told us a california roll was in the center of the structure but there was nothing but lettuce in the center.. right.. lettuce. not going back."

  • "If you want good sushi, go to Amasia on the 3rd floor of the Grand Wailea. We were on a budget for the Hawaii trip b/c of Christmas, so we kept avoiding restaurants in our hotel b/c everything is a little pricier than the restaurants off site. So we're sad that we discovered Amasia 2 days before leaving Hawaii. Anyway, the fish did not taste like it was fresh at Kai Wailea and service was slow b/c they staff with bare minimum one person on the floor. vs. at Amasia, the fish was same day 5am catch and melted in our mouths."

  • "Food was very good. Service was a little off. Our roll order was up and the waitress never served them to us. Finally my husband went to the sushi bar and picked them up."
