Juniper RestaurantSetting perfect/ food unevenThree of us visited Juniper and were wowed by its gorgeous setting in The Fairmont Hotel. Our reception and drinks service were excellent and we were pleased to get little complimentary plates of fried risotto. I was not thrilled with the crab soup which was more like a rather ordinary vegetable broth with lumps of crab as afterthought, than a soup built around this luscious ingredient. My tagliatelle entree was very tasty- no complaints there with homemade pasta redolent with mint and pesto. My husband had asparagus risotto and rockfish and was pleased but not excited about his plates.6/10/2013 12:00:00 AMA perfect lunchI have eaten here several times, and the food is consistently outstanding -- well thought out, fresh takes on conventional dishes, lots of creative veggies. Recently I brought my mom for a special lunch and the service could not have been more gracious. On a late spring day the courtyard was a beautiful hidden garden. Highly recommend.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMBeautiful garden settingSeveral reviewers complained this restaurant is not busy and seems stuffy. I can only attest that the food was delicious and service attentive. We elected to sit in the courtyard which was a quiet oasis from a busy city. Homemade bread with the hotels own honey was a great start with a selection of small dairy cheeses, lamb chops and salmon were perfect entrees. The wine selection is small but notable, prices start around $50. We enjoyed craft cocktails to start (again with house made honeycomb), cheese selection, 3 entrees, bottle of wine, 2 dessert wines, 1 dessert (delicious warm crumble with caramel sauce and ice cream) for a total of $250 (for three people) without tip.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMJuniper updateThe restaurant has gone through many names and as many decor changes. It was once a loud place with tile floors and a nagging noise from barstool a scraping while people entered and exited their bar stools. It was called The Bistro or something like that and was more of a Clyde's lookalike in the West End. NO
Today the restaurant is an elegant carpeted dining experience. The food is great but the options are too voluminous frankly. They could save a lot of time and money by offering nearly 50% of the menu selections. The special lunches are great and I don't know of another place that offers them. I am diabetic and on a diet. I had two starters for my lunch and mixed them: asparagus and the corn & hominy succotash. Excellent.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything is very fresh.Everything is very fresh. Straight forward and excellent preparation.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent quiet conversation placeThis is one of the quietest places to have dinner in the area. The service was good, not great. The bread and salad we had was outstanding, but the salmon was only good.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a gathering of 4 friendsWe had a gathering of 4 friends who do not see each other often. We wanted delicious food and an opportunity to linger over our meal to talk. Juniper was perfect!4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMFANTASTIC!FANTASTIC! All around a great experience! From the 1,000 point Open Table points option, to the greeting at the host stand...not to mention the server was a gem and the food perfect!!!! the 'dietary' restriction options on the menu made it easy to be a vegetarian! We WILL go back!4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMVery nice food and the noiseVery nice food and the noise level is low enough to actually allow for a pleasant conversation. The wine list is strangely limited, though (only rather overpriced American wines). They do not offer regular bread with the food. One can order some kind of sweet honey bread.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMA gem in the West End!Sat in the courtyard on a beautiful evening surrounded by cherry trees in bloom. The food was excellent as well as the service. The prices were actually lower than I would expect from a hotel restaurant like this. A gem!4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMAs usual, the food was superb. As usual, the food was superb. We sat in the garden and it was lovely. The setting is lovely, inside and in the garden, and it is quiet. The food is excellent--imaginative selections across many dietary preferences, high quality ingredients, and expertly prepared. Service is very attentive and helpful in making menu selections. Juniper is truly a gem!4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMSalmon I had with some typeSalmon I had with some type of cherry glaze may have been the best salmon I have ever had. We could talk easily in a lovely atmosphere. The food was very good and the service very helpful.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMThe setting and service wereThe setting and service were outstanding. Very attentive wait staff in a beautiful room.
The food was pretty good. It was too lightly seasoned for my taste and the vegetable selection for the shrimp and grits dish seemed odd.
All in all, however, a very enjoyable experience.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat service! We had lunch here and had a very enjoyable experience. The food is consistently good, but what makes the restaurant is the outstanding service A waiter we had last year stopped by our table to welcome us back! We just had a couple of sandwiches, but the entire menu is worth checking out. Our waiter informed us that dinner is generally a more formal occasion.3/2/2013 12:00:00 AMexpensive peace and quietThis place is in the Fairmont Hotel which is not known to us just looking at the site on line, a tad disingenuous . So it’s very pricy but decent food and great service. But not a fun or happening place we were one of two tables all evening. We had a business dinner so the quiet was fine for us.2/24/2013 12:00:00 AMThis wonderful restaurantThis wonderful restaurant is Washington's best kept secret.
It has a delightful, quiet ambiance with soft jazz playing in the background.
We each had a side salad to begin and the wonderful walnut bread with honey butter which definitely should be ordered. I followed that with the shrimp and grits- terrific- and my husband had the rockfish from the DASH menu. We split a side order of the butternut squash risotto- also delicious. We were too full to order dessert but the meal ended with a complimentary chocolate truffle for each or us. Perfect!1/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
