Diner Reviews
  • "Dined here for dinner during a vacation after the bar tender at my hotel recommended it. I had a reservation for 9, but showed up at 7 since I was alone and was able to sit at the bar, which has full service. The bar staff was very attentive, took my drink order quickly. I ordered the buttermilk biscuit, squash rellenos, and shrimp and pork pasta (think that's the name). All were good, but I didn't have the reaction of 'wow, this food is fantastic' and 'I can't wait to tell everyone'. I thought the prices were reasonable for what I ordered, and portion was good for me. Would I dine there again, yes, but not sure it would be on my 'must go' list."

  • "My wife and I dined here with two other couples, five of us are in the restaurant business, and we love food! That being said, we are all highly critical of places we go.From our first round of cocktails to the cheese board we had for dessert, everything was fantastic.I would recommend the carne tartar topped with quail eggs, unbelievable! Secondly the oyster dish, but like I said we found it hard to really dislike anything! Needing to be totally honest, the only dish questionable was the pork chop it was just extremely tough and chewy. The head Chef Sloan was extremely gracious and we all thank him for an amazing experience.I even had the privilege of meeting the owner who was as down to earth as you could get."

  • "My wife wanted to try this spot for her birthday dinner and it did not disappoint. Ambiance is wonderful with a setting in an old garage/storage building. The noise level in a full restaurant was moderate with no need to shout. Our server was gracious and efficient. We tried a number of small dishes and loved the deep fried olives, the corn fritters were light and fluffy and heirloom tomato/melon salad mixed salty and sweet The Black sea bass was flaky with a magnificent red sauce. We tried the pork loin and found it tasty and tender. However, the star of the evening was the Caramel Chocolate Mousse. Just wonderful!"

  • "Beyond the most consistently good food in an inventive restaurant, I received the best service I've had in San Diego in years. Kudos to management in the hiring and training. My wife and I selected from the snack and small plates so that we could experience a wide variety of the chef's offerings. A very enjoyable evening with many taste profiles."

  • "My only complaint is that we made a reservation a month in advance and were promptly sat in the very back corner of the restaurant upon arrival. it would have been nice having given such advance notice to be sitting somewhere that we could have enjoyed the restaurant more. The wine selection was very well done."

  • "This becoming one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants."

  • "Oysters and Carne Asada toast were off the charts good! Shrimp 'n Pork pasta was so-so, sea bass was overcooked but still flavorful - just wished it wasn't drowned in so much sauce. Service was amazing, thanks Matt! Atmosphere was electric; Bobby Flay was a table away from us and Mr. Blais was running the show in the open kitchen. Overall, a great night/dinner."

  • "The choices are indoors with lots of noise or outside which is quiet until the plane flies overhead or the train rumbles by to the west. The place doesn't differ in this regard from others in the same neighborhood. Rarely do I see Spatburgunder on a wine list. good to have it here."

  • "Loved this restaurant. Had terrific menu options, which did not disappoint, and a great vibe. We sat on the side porch and it had a lot of atmosphere, which is rare and usually my complaint about patio dining. This one had music, great lighting and great furniture and design. When we finished dinner we walked back through restaurant and it was extremely bustling and very loud. Don't sit in the main dining room if you don't want a fairly loud atmosphere! Great overall. Would definitely go back."

  • "One of our favorite pastime is trying new local restaurants. Juniper & Ivy has received plenty of accolades and on Friday it was our turn to give it a try. The restaurant's decor is pleasantly modern and comfortable. Our waiter (Geno) was fantastic - friendly with a great sense of humor. Our group of four ordered different appetizers and entrees, all of which were very good. The wine list is somewhat limited, but prices seemed fair. The restaurant can get pretty noisy though. While we enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere, that might not be to everyone's liking. Overall, we truly enjoyed our dinner and definitely would highly recommend it!"

  • "Ever since I heard Richard Blais was opening a restaurant in San Diego, I have been waiting with baited breath and patience to indulge in his creations. Well it was worth the wait; everything from the cocktails to the dessert was absolutely fabulous. I am a Foodie with truly high standards, and I must say my the experience exceeded my expectations. I will be back many times. Congratulations Chef Blais and keep up the great work on such an inventive, "Leap of Faith" menu."

  • "Great food for the sophisticated palette at reasonable price."

  • "The food was outstanding. One of the best restaurants in San Diego"

  • "The usual experience while it remains the " it " place to go. It will be much better when it and the staff get over themselves. For example,"Sorry we don't transfer the bar tab to the dinner check" thereby already causing a anomaly for those who are planning on simply splitting the check. Eventually, people will realize its a weird location next to an ugly parking lot directly under the extremely noisy airport landing path which kind of makes it an "airport restaurant" not generally known as the best restaurants in town. The food is the typical current fare."

  • "Party of four..... Arrived on time @ 7PM ....seated right away... a very busy Wednesday night..... service was slow.. most likely because of crowd! Food choices were excellent and tasty.... also the cocktails! Was overcharged for a bottle of wine instead of a glass..... however the next day a very pleasant manager reversed the bottle charge on my AM EX card!! Now that is REAL CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Hope this establishment does well... for me a repeat many times over!!!"

  • "Juniper & Ivy, like many new restaurants, has potential. Now let's see if it can fulfill that potential. The restaurant is absolutely visually stunning. It has many different seating choices all of which contribute to its great ambiance. It's the food and the price which did not impress. The portions are tiny. The prices are high. And although all the food tasted good, the tabled product did not seem to have been plated with a head chef's oversight. Lastly, it would have been nice if a manager had checked on us during the meal. Very impersonal!"

  • "We had dined at J&I for my birthday and it wasn't particularly memorable as far as the food. Our foodie friends wanted to go because of the great reviews, so we gave it another shot. Our server was fantastic, unfortunately I cannot remember her name. The dishes we selected were outstanding, and memorable. Who could forget their first sampling of stretched beef bone marrow? I really enjoyed the agnolotti, quite different with a Southwestern twist of corn."

  • "What a cool new place for SD foodies! Outstanding menu, fabulous food & wonderful service. Very open seating environment, which is not my favorite as you do not feel like you have much privacy, but everything else is truly outstanding. And this place is reasonably priced too! I look forward to returning!"

  • "Great food, great service, excellent atmosphere. Food fit for a sophisticated palate but not intimidating to timid eaters. Dined with clients and the food was a great ice-breaker both in appearance and taste"

  • "We had wanted to go to Juniper and Ivy since we saw it open a few weeks back. Luckily, we had work associates in town from New Zealand so we thought it the perfect occasion. It impressed us all. Our server, Taylor, was awesome...she recommended great food and wine and the experience was flawless. The Ahi appetizer was the best Ahi any of us had ever had, it melts in your mouth. Will definitely go again."

  • "I loved the small plates concept because it allowed us to try many different items on the menu. We had the California olives, stuffed with Merguez sausage and served with a harissa yogurt dipping sauce. Very tasty with just the right amount of heat. The linguini and clams was to die for. Excellent savory/salty/seaside flavor coming from the uni butter sauce. The watermelon salad was light and fresh on a warm summer night. Tuna tartar was excellent with small dollops of a lemongrass/coconut cream. Not served with wonton chips, which is usually my favorite part, but the sprinking of rice crispies did the trick. We ended with the rabbit loin which wasn't our favorite, but still good. Didn't really like the peach dessert."

  • "First time visit for two couples to Juniper & Ivy which was highly recommended by neighbors. Interesting, notable and reasonable wine list. The RUDY zin is a terrific find. The food however was way disappointing. Kale Caesar- a soggy wreath; California Fruit, nut and cheese salad - a bland dressing and dry ingredients; Salmon pastrami appetizer - came as sliders-not identified on the menu or by waiter -bad for gluten free; Ancient grains and vegetables plate - overcooked veggies and undercooked quinoa. Could be all four of us made the wrong choices. There were 2 tasty items - Iceberg lettuce w/ bleucheese, bacon&citrus and Panecotta dessert. Also reviewing the menu, waiter said kitchen could change any item if they ran out -Yikes."

  • "What a find! I got a gift certificate for here for my birthday from a family member and little did I know what a fabulous place it was! I quickly learned that Richard Blais (winner of Top Chef All Stars) is the executive chef and it shows. The food is spectacular and the decor is very chic, but with an urban, loft-ish vibe. We, by sheer fortune, got seated at a "chef's table", meaning at the bar alongside the open kitchen, which was the most happening place in the restaurant! It was fascinating watching all the chefs work their magic and turn out such gorgeous plates of food. We also were extremely lucky to meet Chef Richard Blais who was there that evening and he was humble and polite. Highly recommend!!! Yummy food, great atmostphere!"

  • "Try everything! :). Our fav's were the yellowtail and Carne cruda. Least fav was some peach leather dessert. Loved the open kitchen and watching Blaiss but he was out by 10."

  • "Almost everthing about this restaurant is compelling: extraordinary food, appealing interior design, and calm wait-staff despite the mayhem created by the din of the crowd. The noise level is impossibly loud and distracts from an otherwise very satisfactory experience."

  • "Not the same old stuff. Wonderful dinner, very good service. Sat outside; periodic airplane traffic, but still quieter than inside."

  • "San Diego is very lucky to have Richard Blais open a restaurant here. He is bringing San Diego to a higher level of dining. Innovative menu, beautiful plating, and delicious plates. We also were lucky to have him come by our table and chat with us for a few minutes on a busy Friday evening. If you love food, you must eat here."

  • "Got a 6:30 table after initially being sat at the bar. Strange, first time I have ever used opentable to reserve two seats at the bar. They happily got us a table where we were greeted by one of the best waiters on earth. We started with the corn fritters which were excellent except for the small copper wire from the frying basket that was in one of the fritters. The chef came and was horrified and offered us another dish, which we said no. However, we carefully inspected the rest of the fritters. No other metal was found. second was the kale and seaweed caesar salad which was a little spicy for our taste. Third the bone marrow arrived which was to died for ( A MUST)! Main course, the pork porterhouse, recommend cooked medium."

  • "Interesting menu - not all dishes up to par but others exceeded expectations. Service was great and helpful in every possible way. IMO Cuccina Urbana is still top of the list but this is up there. Will be back for a revisit."

  • "It was very good, but expensive for such small portions. So loud it was difficult to hear your table mates. Must try outside dining if we go again. It looked a lot quieter. Corkage fee way to high at $25. Overall, good, unique food, but pricey for what you get."

  • "We sat at the bar in front of the kitchen. It was awesome to see Chef Blais and his team doing their thing. The place is very lively. If you're looking for a quiet meal, the chef's bar might not be for you - but if you're looking for memorable experience, I would highly recommend it. The food and drinks were all excellent. The staff and service were great as well. PS - make sure you try the yodel for dessert."

  • "During our recent trip, my sister and I decided that J&I was a must try. We took an early reservation which allowed our server to explain the menu before the rush. We started with the albacore, corn fritters, and carne cruda asada toast appetizers. Each was really delicious and interesting. As we were finishing up, our now absentee waiter popped back by to talk me into the sea bass and recommend the pork tenderloin to my sister. The sea bass was solid but not as interesting as the small plates. The pork was actually over cooked and tough to cut despite its great flavor. Our waiter didn't make it back to check on our entrees although we did manage a dessert order. The Yodel was fun and tasty. The wine/drink menu was great."
