Diner Reviews
  • "I am all about the dry aged beef meatball. It was my favorite item of the night. The squash blossom relleno was fried in an incredibly light batter. I wish I could have had four of each of those things. It's so hard not to order the whole menu each time. Bring friends who will share"

  • "Certainly a must go to for anyone in San Diego. We can't wait to come back just for the option of dining here."

  • "Might as well buy rotisserie chicken at grocery store and put sauce with presentation. Spent !50.00 for 2 people and shared entree, chicken, very average. Had cocktail each, Glass of wine $11.00 each Gruner, was delicious. and a few apps."

  • "We have been here before. This time we took friends. One of the friends is on a strict diet. Our waiter, Gino, took it all in stride and researched an entree's ingredients and had the kitchen make adjustments to fit her needs. While the noise level is somewhat energetic, we had little trouble conversing. The food is wonderful. We have tried numerous dishes including the San Diego Chicken and the Ensenada White Bass. We were not disappointed. Also, a must try is the corn fritters. We found the Kale Caesar pleasant with no bitter kale taste. Do not miss the Caramel Chocolate Mousse!"

  • "Chef Richard Blais does NOT disappoint! We started off at the bar for some cocktails; the "In the Ivy" was really refreshing, especially on a hot summer day, and the Milly Vanilly was good, if you like something on the sweet side. Some suggestions for ordering off the dinner menu (our group of 4 shared the following dishes): Squash Blossom Relleno, Baja Yellowtail, Salmon Tartare, Corn Agnolotti (order the large plate), Lamb Bolognese (order the large plate), Baja Shrimp Toast, Slow Roasted Beets, Local Corn, and California King Salmon. For dessert: Be sure to order the Yodel (a chocolate lover's delight) and Caramel Chocolate Mousse. Every dish was very flavorful and no one in our group had any complaints."

  • "The ambiance, the interesting menu, great wine, awesome service, the funky bathrooms, I could go on. The beef carpaccio toast with quail egg won us over! Share the plates so you get to taste more delicacies you won't be disappointed!"

  • "Had good Spanish and Portuguese wine. Menu tried to be innovative but missed the mark. Close but no cigar. The bone marrow got killed by the ranch dressing. Got to lose that dressing. Try reduced wine sauce or something. The pasta ravioli thing was under cooked and inedible. Not close to being al dente. The steak tartar with quail eggs and the ceviche were very good."

  • "Absolutely loved this restaurant. Can't wait to go back. Food was delish as well as the cocktails. I recommend Juniper & Ivy 100%."

  • "THe food is delicious, creative, magic. Each onde of the plates I choose was a experience in taste, smell, beautiful. It is really good. The service was efficient and friendly."

  • "Each plate was good, portions were big enough so you can share with another but small enough where you can have a 3 course meal"

  • "The food and the atmosphere were both amazing! I definitely recommend for a night out with friends or for a date."

  • "We were welcomed with Champagne and an a starter which was unexpected - Thank You Chef Blaise. The cocktails were perfection and Sommelier Tammy was extremely knowledgeable and selected the perfect Red. The menu is extensive so I will have to return to try out the many other items that sound and Look wonderful. I so want to sit at the bar facing the Chef's at work too."

  • "Service was great and place was fun and hopping. Ordered a large variety of first courses and all great. Main courses/entrees were not good. Steak was fare, salmon and bass were bland and pasta was too al dente. Perfect place for groups to drink and share appetizers. Bill was reasonable."

  • "There is so much going on at Juniper and Ivy, with the food selections, wine and specialty cocktails, the energy of the open kitchen and decor, it's an exciting experience for anyone. We sat at the table overlooking the kitchen which was incredible to watch everything being assembled and perfected. We sampled items from all of the menus and everything blew us away as well as the knowledge of the servers helping us decipher. Thank you Chef Blais and team for an amazing culinary experience from the moment we walked in the door to the last bite!"

  • "This is where you want to go to challenge your preconceptions about the limits of culinary creativity. The food here is exquisite, explosively delicious, and memorable."

  • "High energy open space. Brightly colored abstract murals. Bare plumbing overhead. Food begins visually, like museum quality op-art, followed by imaginative textures and tastes to match. Service is good-humored and intelligent. For all this you pay handsomely, but I had no regrets."

  • "Food was bland and served cold. Service took too long"

  • "The linguini and clams that I had were absolutely without flavor, and my wife's pork porterhouse was overcooked (dry, tough, and tasteless, although it was purported to be medium rare. It hadn't seen medium rare in the last half hour before it was served. Our server, however, was a delightful, attentive, and efficient young woman. However, the restaurant and patio look out on the parking lot, and the noise from jet planes landing was deafening. "Energetic" doesn't describe the pain-inducing noise level. Not a pleasant experience by any stretch of the imagination."

  • "This is the second time we have been to Juniper and Ivy and I think it has gotten even better. I love the open and bright feel of the space and it makes you want to take your time to enjoy your meal. I love the fact that there are tons of small plate options and that you can order the pasta dishes in two sizes. You want to be a little adventurous to get the full experience of the food options here, but don't need to go to far out on a limb to find something extremely tasty and exciting. Even on a Tuesday it was packed and rightfully so."

  • "The Baja Shrimp toast and the Relleno are a must!!"

  • "Went for the small plates and dessert. The heritage tomatoes were so good I wanted to lick the plate. Same for the yellowtail. Fig toast was nice. Corn was ok but eat the whole thing - there are spicy bits on the side. Biscuits are wonderful. Yodel dessert is magnificent. Went to a different place the next day and was sad - I missed the tomatoes."

  • "I enjoyed the savory courses very much. We had the Biscuit, Carne Cruda Asada toast and Local Corn and all were delicious dishes with simple focused delicious flavors. However, the desserts were very confusing and unfocused and therefore not up to the high standards of the main meal. The décor was modern and the seating comfortable but the lighting was so poor that I could barely see what was on my plate which really detracted from my experience. Needless to say, I am unable to comment on the presentation of the food. Overall, I enjoyed the food and would come back for lunch but I would not likely return for dinner until the lighting issues were fixed."

  • "Great energy, great decor and atmosphere. I went in with high expectations so that could temper this a little. I thought the food was very good, but was hoping for one or more dishes to leave such a lasting impression to make me crave it fortnightly. I would return."

  • "For my money..the only true WOW came from the heirloom tomato salad and the interior of the restauant."

  • "Everything was good, but nothing was special. The look, the vibe, and the food were like so many other places. Had a sort of warehouse feel."

  • "Have never eaten at a Blais restaurant but came in with high expectations. Meal was amazing and love the ability to taste a number of creative combinations with the 'small plates'. Will be back. Saturday night crowd was a bit of a scene...would like to try it on another night."

  • "First time visiting Juniper and Ivy and we would return. We had a 5:30 reservation and the restaurant was half full when we arrived. The bar area was full. Nice big open kitchen producing delicious food and nicely displayed on plate. Our party of 4 enjoyed everything ordered. Service was great. The only negative thing for us was it was so loud that we had a hard time carrying on a conversation. We were there on a Saturday, one of their busiest nights. When we return we will avoid a weekend and hopefully it will not be so loud."

  • "Of all the restaurants I've been to in the last 6 years I have lived in San Diego, NOTHING has compared to my overall dining experience I recently had at Juniper and Ivy. For anyone who wants to impress a date, who truly wants excellent food, who is looking for creativity along with top notch quality, go here. Get the mussels, tuna tare tare, salmon dish, the beef tare tare toast with quail egg on top and the yodel dessert."

  • "Amazing food, great experience with an open kitchen. Live action on all plates being created. The menu is bold and innovative. Lots of creative new flavors. A must experience!"

  • "We were a party of four sitting at a table (not a booth). There were many times when we could not hear what was being said by the person across the table - less than four feet away. "Energetic" is not accurate. "Dinner ala din" is much closer. On the positive: Our server (Matt) was excellent and Tami (sommelier) was very helpful. A variety of small plates and appetizers comprised our meal. They were all excellent, but the standouts were the corn fritters, the salmon, the yellowtail, and the ahi. The wine list is adventurous - certainly not run of the mill. FYI - the corkage policy is $25 per bottle, but they waive one corkage fee if you purchase a bottle from them, which we did. Go for the food, but be forewarned of the noise level!"

  • "My family and I had an amazing time at Juniper & Ivy. The food was fantastic and the server was amazing she was very attentive and suggestive. The atmosphere was very relaxing and comfortable. I did have a big problem with trying to change my reservations I called several times to add one more person but not once was my phone call answered. When I did speak to someone when called to confirm the reservation I tried to add one person and I was caught off guard with an immediate "No". But over all an amazing time during our dinning experience"

  • "We loved Juniper & Ivy for several reasons. The atmosphere was great and the booth we sat in was really comfy and allowed for easy conversation. Our waiter was personable and very knowledgable about the menu and making suggestions. The shrimp toast, beet salad and lamb carpaccio appetizers were very yummy! The entre's were delicious and had a uniquely creative twist to them. (Chicken, Lamb leg, King Salmon and Sea Bass) The dessert "Yodel" was to die for. Highly recommend this trendy fun place. Will go back again when in San Diego!"

  • "I've followed Richard Blais though his Top Chef endeavors, and he was always my favorite for his creativity and finesse. I was thrilled when he opened a restaurant downtown! I was able to make a reservation from my phone for our party of 3, and when we got there, the valet parking was only $5 -- a pleasant surprise after trying to find other parking downtown, to no avail. We were immediately taken to our seats; the whole place was open and alive. We split 3 appetizers: a squash blossom relleno, the buttermilk biscuit, and the fig toast with fresh-made ricotta and honey. All three were excellent! One of our party tried and highly recommended the "Pena"cillin drink. My only complaint is that it was a bit loud, but would definitely go back!"

  • "We went here instead if our usual trip to George's and glad we did . Starters were fantastic and good for sharing, pork belly could have been an entree, folks liked the oysters ... We shared the entrees which ranges from pasta to sea bass to pork chop to steak and everything tasted great and nice presentation. Going again!"

  • "Inventive and delicious food, artfully presented in a spacious converted warehouse. Sharp interior highlighted by colorful contemporary paintings. Service a bit slow at the start. Valet parking was a plus."

  • "A question we all asked ourselves after enjoying a really terrific experience at Juniper & Ivy. A unique menu of outstanding drinks, small plates, entrees and desserts. Ambience was lively, and the service was superb--friendly, prompt, and very informative and accurate in providing details about menu items. The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, where street parking is not generous, but a very competent valet service ($5) is readily available. The menu apparently changes frequently, and based on our first visit, we will definitely return again and again!"

  • "The only flaw was when I got to the restaurant early, ordered a Pellegrino, and got a full quart bottle, which is absurd. But once we were seated, things started getting amazing. First, the ambience is stunning. Juniper & Ivy is a very large space with varied seating (tables, bar stools, banquettes). The kitchen is completely open, but alas, we were on the opposite side, so I didn't get to see much. We had six small plates, two were merely very good, three were excellent, and one (the dry-aged meatball) was unbelievable! Our server was also terrific. She never pressed, offered great suggestions, and was generally a bright presence, adding to a terrific experience. We decided to forego dessert. Next time!"

  • "Too loud, poor lighting (to the point that people were using their iphone flashlights to see what they were eating). Server was not able to make recommendations as to how to put together a cohesive meal with the combination of bites, small plates, toasts. large plates, etc. Had told restaurant thru Open Table that this was a birthday celebration....no acknowledgment with candle on dessert that we ordered. Food was very pretty, but underseasoned. Do not appreciated restaurants were there is no salt/pepper on table. Needed to ask for toasts or crackers for the tartare....."

  • "Excellent food and great service. Valet parking is a nice option in a neighborhood that is always difficult when trying to find an open space. It IS very loud on the patio - the airport is close by and you can hear planes landing about every 2-3 minutes. Other than that, its a great restaurant!"
