Diner Reviews
  • "We went to Juni on Saturday for a celebration. Was the perfect choice for a special dinner. Food, wine and service was impecable. We had the 4 course menu with wine pairing. They adapt the menu for gluten free without compromising the quality. They even have gluten free bread! I highly recomend this restaurant and I am looking foward to return."

  • "Remarkably inventive and delicious food - priced accordingly. Worth enjoying when cost is not a major concern."

  • "All 4 diners thought each course of their 4 course $90 prix fixe was delicious, and beautifully presented. Exotic ingredients were creatively paired and the amuse bouche was tasty. Excellent service and the chef was quite attentive to food allergies, gluten free requests in particular. Quiet ambiance, conducive to chatting, not at all stuffy."

  • "Where do I start, Juni is simply amazing, unique and continuously delighted and surprised me all night long. What a gem."

  • "This is a very special restaurant with a lovely atmosphere, superb food and great service. It is not cheap and neither should it be for a place of this standard. The 4 or 6 course menus are very interesting very tasty and beautifully presented. The room is quiet and very pleasantly arranged with tables a nice distance apart. This is a place for a special occasion and the chef, Shaun Hergatt makes the rounds of the tables to get feedback. There are not so many places of this quality in the city and this is certainly up there with the best that we have been to."

  • "My mother and I recently dined at Juni for lunch. We were surprised by Juni's location but were awed by the space and food. We started with the asparagus, followed by the pork and then dessert. The bread to start was Daniel quality and outstanding. The cocktail list was inventive and clever and seasonal. We each had two cocktails. The bar area looks fun and I'm sure it's full at night. Our service was amazing-purse stools, black or white napkins, etc. Our waiter never hovered but was attentive. Didn't need to ask for a thing. It is also a price performer-$35 for 3 courses-a true bargain. Overall this is a gem of a restaurant in K town that really stands out. I look forward to dining there again."

  • "We discovered Juni during its opening week last Fall and have returned on every trek to the city. Chef Hergatt and his unfailingly kind staff continue to offer a dining experience beyond category and in my experience without equal. Excellence and imagination find an appreciative audience and a rainy Tuesday last week found the dining rooms full. The end of the evening found us also full and very happy."

  • "I took my wife there for her her birthday on a Wednesday night so it was probably more quiet than on the weekend. From the moment we arrived, the staff were so attentive. I had called ahead to let them know it was my wife's birthday. They all knew and each one said happy birthday to her during the night, from the bus boy to the waiter to the maitre'D. They had even signed a birthday card that was sitting on our table waiting for us when we arrived. We both ordered the four-course tasting menu. Since she and I shared each course with each other, we each got to taste 8 items from the menu. Everything was delicious. I tried tongue and cheek for the first time and loved both. We will definitely go back and highly recomnend Juni!"

  • "Had one of my best meals here recently. The plating is truly beautiful. Everything is artful, and very thought out. The restaurant is a nice quiet space. Would definitely return and recommend to anyone who wants an outstanding meal."

  • "Based on the excellent reviews, my husband and I were looking forward to a fun evening. The restaurant decor was charming and sophisticated but our waiter seemed a bit stuffy and all business. We opted for three al la cart items, good but not remarkable for the over $250.00 price tag. My husband had the veal with a strong truffle sauce that did not impress him. My salmon was nice as was the chocolate and banana dessert. Overall, the staff was efficient yet we never experienced the relaxing fun evening we were hoping for. The waiter seemed tense and the experience was not great, just good."

  • "Overall just a phenomenal experience. Wife and I had the 4 course tasting menu. Though initially planning to go it alone on the wine selection, the sommelier talked me into the wine pairings, and he did an excellent job, glad I listened to him. All the dishes were presented as culinary works of art. With flavors to match. Foie gras was among the best I've and anywhere. sea bass was excellent, as was the venison. Service was attentive, and meshed with our eating speed. All in, with tip - $400 for two of us."

  • "being a fan of SHO, I was excited to try Juni. it did not disappoint!! the food was amazing and worth the price. the room was a little too formal and quiet, but even so, i'd definitely go back again."

  • "The understated elegance of the new restaurant really lets you focus on the food and wine. The service and timing was excellent. The four course is enough food to leave you filling satisfied. I think the next time we may go for the 6 course. Every course was sublimely balanced. Its one of my new favorite restaurants. I'll be back soon."

  • "I took my husband to lunch for his birthday. I was surprised that they had a prix fixed menu. We brought along our 9 month old and had a great location right in the front of the restaurant. My three course meal was absolutely delicious!"

  • "The reviews I had seen for Juni were positive, but mixed, and in the face of yesterday's subarctic cold didn't seem that enticing compared to spending the night at home in my pajamas. But I dragged myself out of my warm apartment with all the enthusiasm of someone heading out for routine dental work. And yes, on arrival, the space and inexplicably aggressive coat check demands were odd. But, oh the food! There are many places to get good food, well cooked. This is a place to get both those things AND brilliant compositions of taste - as if food, not color, were an artist's natural palette. Each bite builds flavor and texture, wakes the mouth and sings as if the world was still Eden and every experience made from joy. So much wonderful!"

  • "I chose Juni without knowing anything about the restaurant other than the reviews I'd read on Open Table when making my reservation. What a gem! Absolutely delicious and artistically presented dishes as well as professional, friendly and attentive service. Chef Hergatt's visit to our table towards the end of the meal was a nice touch in the European style."

  • "Loved SHO (except at the very end) so I was excited to try Juni. It did not disappoint! From the first bites, the trio of amuse and fresh baguettes, you know you are in for a treat. My favorite courses were the foie gras torchons with a flakey, light delicately spiced brioche served warm in an individual pan. Rich, but not over-the-top, it satisfies the craving for decadent foie gras but still leaves room for what is to come. I loved the gold-gilded egg at SHO so I tried the egg with truffle and it was soft and fluid with just the right mix of farm freshness and truffle earthiness. I would pass on the kingfish. Described as firm, it was stringy and tough ( similar to a woody asparagus). The amazing coconut, cilantro dessert haunts me!!!"

  • "I got the 4 course tasting menu and for me it definitely was the right amount. I tried things I never had before and was glad I did because they were all done really well. I did think the menu was not helpful in understanding what was actually in the dishes. We had to ask the waiter a lot of questions and heard the other tables asking as well. I loved almost all the dishes, which included my friend's food as well. I think the black bass was the best of all the dishes. My only real negative was that it was definitely stuffier than I was expecting, so a very nice place for a quiet great dinner, just not a place for a fun atmosphere."

  • "We love Chef Shaun Hergatt's food, but, unfortunately, his current digs in the Hotel Chandler have all the charm of a Comfort Inn in downtown Akron. Staff forgot to offer us coffee or tea with dessert; to top it off, the hot water vat in the lobby (next to the Twinings tea bags) was empty! Still, food was as excellent as it was downtown at SHO!"

  • "My husband and I dine at many top restaurants in NYC and abroad and the meal that we just had at Juni was among the best we've had anywhere. We ordered the Chef's Tasting Menu and from the 4 bite-sized amuse-bouche that started the meal to the final friandise, every bite was sublime. Course sizes were generous and the wine pairings were lavish and perfectly complemented the food. I never thought I'd enjoy tongue but we were practically licking the plate, and I am not normally a big fan of squab but savored every morsel. Chef Shaun Hergatt prepared one of the courses at our table and stopped to chat with us again later. He's as charming as he is talented. Service is impeccable and personable and the décor is understated elegance."

  • "We did the 4 course price fix. Our meals were unique and delicious from the appetizer to dessert. The waiter's knowledge of the wine options was spot on. The presentation of each course was beautiful, the flavors were intense and the service was impeccable. It was an excellent dining experience!"

  • "Having Chef Hergatt back at Juni is already great news. We had couple of celebrations at SHO and we were missing his unique cuisine. We went last week for my husband's birthday and had a fabulous dinner. We had the four course prix fixe; each dish was beautifully presented and on top of it the taste of each one was just delicious. My favorite: the tongue over polenta. The staff is very professional and attentive. They contributed to make the entire experience an unforgettable one! We certainly will recommend it and look forward to go back."

  • "We stayed at the Chandler hotel and based on previous reviews decided to take a chance on what seemed like a unique menu. We are soooo glad we did. While the portions are moderate the flavor and taste of each dish was extremey satisfying. Would highly recommend."

  • "Amazing cocktails! I'm usually not a bourbon drinker but one of their bourbon drinks was amazing! Also very pretty amuse bouche trio which was very surprising and fun. Staff was so attentive, even provided me a small stool for my bag! I've never seen that done anywhere else! So thoughtful! Went for our wedding anniversary and although it did say "Happy Anniversary" on our dessert plate it wasn't anything different, so that was a bit ordinary. Food was good though, inventive, and we left happy. A bit too quiet though, and would recommend not to be seated right at the entrance of the kitchen. Saw Chef Hergatt come out a few times but he didn't stop at our table. Would have been a nice touch, the dining room was practically empty."

  • "Juni has become a constant on our visits to the city. Despite all the sniveling over decor and location, it never fails to deliver food of a standard rarely encountered. Chef H and his very kind staff have it all figured out and we can only hope that many others agree. Rarely has so much talent, taste and energy been focused on making your experience absolutely delightful!!. Can't wait to return!."

  • "The food is better than French Laundry, and the service isn't stuffy!!! The presentation of the food is a work of art and tastes were perfectly blended. Some people complain the decor isn't great, but I thought it was amazing, simple but elegant. The cocktails were delicious, not too sweet, and again perfectly blended. The crystal they use makes the cocktail taste better! So beautiful. We stayed and talked at our table till midnight, and no one hovered or made us feel uncomfortable."

  • "Like the apocryphal secret restaurant, Juni is a place no one seems to know about even though it is one of the best new restaurants in city. The odd location and it's awkward relationship with the hotel in which it sits is probably why."

  • "A very impressive restaurant. Primarily a tasting menu set up in which you can request items from appetizers to entrées to desserts for your meal; my friend and I got four courses each. Everything was beautifully prepared and presented. The black bass was outstanding and the squab was excellent. Beef cheeks, yummy! Unless you order entrée sizes the plates are small, but I was happily satisfied at the end of the meal. The desserts were absolutely sublime. Whoever the pastry/dessert chef is, s/he is unbelievable. I have never had better more unusual desserts anywhere in NYC. One more point, our server was the best -- so knowledgeable about the menu."

  • "we hit there for lunch, which is a great way to try a place. service was very nice and attentive. $35 for 3 courses, and food was tasty but portions were very small so I really didn't think the value sat with the quality or portion. Highlights were the quail egg on frisee and the parsnip beef cheek"

  • "I took my husband there for his birthday, we did the 6 course prix fixe. While the food was delicious, the restaurant space itself was a little too hotel-like. I know it is in a hotel, but we really felt like we were in one. The decor needs a little improvement. The food was very good. A little on the "deconstructed" side, but very well put together. Also, we were stuffed by the end of the meal! I could barely finish my last course. Next time I would ask for 4 courses. Last thing, but not a big deal: I had told them it was my husband's birthday on the reservation request and they confirmed that when they called me the day before, but they didn't bring out a candle or anything. I could have said something but not a big deal."

  • "It's great to have Shaun Hergatt cooking in NYC again. He doesn't get as much press as he deserves, but his cooking is as good as or better than those who get more. We each had 4 courses, for 8 dishes total, and every one was beautiful, with great flavor and texture contrasts. Standouts were the foie, tongue over polenta, veal tenderloin, and beef cheeks, but everything was very good. Wine service was most helpful, as our mixed orders led us to half-bottles each of red and white; good recommendations were offered. The front room is so much warmer and less corporate than SHO was. There's nothing like it in the area, and few like it in the city."

  • "We hadn't read about the chef and his cuisine before our visit. It was a very pleasant surprise: Dinner as an event, a night out. The cuisine was creative and tasty, presentation was aesthetic and added to the appreciation of the different ingredients, service was attentive, unobtrusive and professional. The layout of the room gave the impression of being at a private dinner. Also the bar and staff were a good complement to the restaurant, and just as good and professional. I would definitely recommend Juni. As a new restaurant, I hope it maintains the level of creativity and service it displaid to us during our visit."

  • "Shaun Hergatt has done it again, with an excellent, inspired menu and perfectly executed cuisine. He was the chef at our wedding, and he never disappoints. Service was informed, professional, exactly as I hoped and expected. Unfortunately, the room is a bit too stuffy and doesn't match Shaun's vibrant cuisine. I envision him in a more modern space. Once he does this, he is destined for stardom! I hope he brings his fantastic style and cuisine to Hong Kong, since we recently moved there."
