  • "We stayed at the Inn and dined at Butlers on our way to Montreal. We hadn't been there in years, not since NECI had a school there. It's changed, and not for the better. The menu used to be filled with creative dishes that were inspired by the chefs at the school; now, it's all common fare that you'd find in any American restaurant. Ambiance is a bit spartan as well. We had high expectations when we made the reservations, but were somewhat disappointed that it wasn't as good as we had remembered."

  • "I always have a great meal at Butlers. The meals are prepared by students, with instructor supervision. For a meal that's prepared by students it tends to be very pricey, but the food is well worth it in my opinion. The Inn at Essex has great rates, especially with Travelzoo deals, so overall I feel that I can splurge on the restaurant."

  • "The food was very good but most of the hot food was cold. For the price I would have expected better. The table was not cleared of dirty dishes in a timely manner. We had to stack the dirty dishes in an unused area on our table. A price of 14-15$ per person would have been more in par."

We both liked the idea that we were giving young culinary students a chance to strut their stuff, and they did a fantastic job. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic: fresh flowers and candles at each table, lights were low, noise level was minimal. We would recommend this place to anyone interested in a quiet, romantic setting with superb food."

  • "Beautiful night at Butler's! Very romantic evening with gorgeous flower garden view. Even with two weddings going on at the Inn we felt like we had a quiet and private intimate meal. The food and presentation were outstanding. Can't wait to return!"

  • "Sunday brunch - a bit dissapointing. Cold waffles (make the waffles hot & fresh at the omlette station - easy solution from a non-chef) extremely bland eggs benedict with one over cooked and one under cooked. Overcooked potatoes, or cooked the previous day, with the Nicoise tuna salad. Nice, but inconsistent service. Three plates had stacked up on the table, a no-no for brunch service - add more wait staff? The highlights: pork tenderloin, catfish and zuchinni french toast. The breakfast portion really wasn't anything to write home about - not overly excited to return."

  • "The food was flavorful, but not served hot. When I made reservation, I told the place it was my friends birthday, his 69th. No mention was made of it during the entire dinner. My friend is diabetic and wanted cheese for dessert which was part of the meal. We were told that cheese was $12.00 extra and would get 5.00 credit. The cheese plate had 4 pieces of cheese 1" square. This was a ripoff. I did not make a scene and just paid the bill. However, I would not go back or suggest anyone else does either."

  • "I feel that the meal was not worth the value. I have had just as good a meal for half the price that was charged for our meal at the Butler's Restaurant. I had the lamb dinner and the portion should have been doubled. As the lady dinning next to us said when asked about the meal--"its good but where is the rest of it". My wife and I do not plan to eat again your restaurant."

  • "My wife & I really enjoyed the food. Our only complaint is that the chairs become very uncomfortable after about an hour. We would choose this restaurant more often if they improved the comfort. This is really a distraction to what would otherwise have been a fantastic experience."
