Diner Reviews
  • "This was my first experience at this restaurant and I was totally impressed with the whole experience. The staff was very accommodating, friendly, and quick to answer questions and make suggestions when asked. The menu and food was more than I had expected from the reviews I had read and offered a very varied food experience. All in all a great meal before our show at the Music Hall. We had lots of time for the meal, never felt rushed and enjoyed each course completely. Can't wait to go back! "

  • "Had dinner at Jumpin Jay's Fish Cafe. The food had an excellent texture and flavor and the fish was very fresh. Try their sauce sampler with your fish plate; you get to try all their sauces which are excellent. The lobster sauce was my favorite. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a laid back dining experience and great food."

  • "The mussels appetizer was quite good with a bit of a zip. The chowder was one of the better chowders that I have tasted. We had the pan seared cod was seared just right and the cilantro butter sauce adding wonderful flavoring. Although they don't have a kids menu, they made chicken fingers and pasta for our kids so they were happy too. Waitstaff was pleasant. Glad we tried Jumpin' Jays!"

  • "Loved it ! Went with a group of 7. Food amazing, service was incredible , our waitress was fast , efficient and knowledgable. Great drinks ( we love our martini's !) . We would definetly return. The restaurant takes on a whole new look in the evening. It truly looked like a cafe in the daytime but when we returned at night there were candles and the bar was jumping. Prices were great. Overall just a fun upbeat atmosphere with great food and reasonable prices."

  • "Seafood the way it should be prepared and presented. I was totally impressed and enjoyed one of the best seafood meals in a long time. Great service as well."

  • "I spent a lot of time reviewing the restaurant week menus and when I saw Scallop Carbonara I knew this was the place for our group. We were seated within 5 minutes of our reservation, always high on my list of why I would return to a restaurant again. They guys ordered off the Restaurant week menu and had the variety plate of oysters which I was told were fantastic. The beet salad was great, but I would have like a few more beets. The Scallop Carbonara was yummy and the key lime pie for dessert was fantastic. All and all a great value! I want to go back and order off the menu as all the fish looked terrific."

  • "Receptionist lost my Open Table reservation and was a bit ditzy. Food and service was great but the place is extremely loud due to obnoxious, loud customers and hardly intimate."

  • "We were there on NH restaurant week. Having looked over the menu's of ll participating establishing Jumpin Jays offer the best PRIX. I had the shrimp wrap appetizer with hot peanut sauce. We both had the Diver Scallops and Key Lime Pie tor desert. The appetizers were great. The Scallops were cooked to perfection. What can I say about Key Lime Pie. If there is any negative it would be the size of the portions. Without the restaurant week special we would have skipped appetizers. While they were three of the largest and plumpest Scallops I have seen, three does not make a meal. It was great for artistic presentation though."

  • "Great food, and reasonable portion sizes! If you get the "fresh catch" (grilled or pan seared) fish options, the mango curry salsa is a great sauce option."

  • "I had the grouper and my wife had the halibut. Both were delicious. And the preparations, including a choice of several different sauces, were wonderful. It's not inexpensive, but for the quality absolutely worth it."

  • "We have lived in Portsmouth for a year and half now and have been repeatedly disappointed with the price of going out to eat here. I swear, prices at most places are MORE expensive than Boston! The food is good, but in general, I don't like to spend $25 for an entrée just be cause I don't feel like cooking. Jumpin Jay's has a great reputation for delicious, fresh fish. They did not disappoint in that regard. However, after spending $85 on one appy, two dinners, one dessert, and one $9.00 glass of wine, we were still a tiny bit hungry when we got home. With the tip the bill came to $100. Even if it was a special occasion such as birthday, or anniversary, I just don't think its worth the price."

  • "All four of us loved our meals. The drinks were fun and inventive, the service was the perfect balance of attentive and restrained, and all of the food was excellently prepared. The haddock was succulent, and I loved the pineapple salsa, and the vegetables were tender. We would go back again in a heartbeat."

  • "The food amazing! The service is always great. It can be a little loud at times. The one bad thing is you have to use the candle or your phone flashlight app just to read the menu!! It is a shame because the food is so wonderful and the only thing needed is a little more light."

  • "If you want fresh, fabulous fish, go to Jumpin Jay's Fish Cafe. I had a spectacular piece of halibut, while my date enjoyed monk fish. We chose simple preparations which allowed the quality of the fish to shine - SO GOOD! A bit pricey for the more-difficult-to-find fish (like halibut), but very worthwhile, especially for an extra special occasion. Not a very large venue and we were seated by the bar, which was rather noisy, but I would return to eat there anytime."

  • "Took out of town guests here to impress them with the Portsmouth restaurant scene and of course our local catch. Happy guests = happy host. Great Job, JJs."

  • "We have been to Jumpin Jays so many times and have never been disappointed! Oysters outstanding, fish always fresh and staff attentive and friendly. Will be back soon!"

  • "Made a reservation for a birthday celebration. Was seated at a bar table big enough for two Barbie dolls! Asked for a larger table and was offered the same table at the door entrance on a slanted wall that was in the runway to the kitchen. Sat at the bar and did the chair shuffle to accommodate other parties, food was lukewarm at best. All this misery for $160.00! Never again. Jumpin Jays need to make their tables as big as their ego...sad to see them join the list of has beens."

  • "We had a reservation set for 6:30, but since my wife and I finished work early we arrived at Jumpin Jays 45 minutes early hoping they could move us up without too much trouble. They couldn't have been friendlier about accommodating us. The service was great from start to finish. We never felt rushed. The swordfish special was cooked perfectly accompanied by nicely done vegetables. My wife especially enjoyed her spinach salad - delicious!"

  • "Ive been going to JJs for the past 5-6 yrs, and it is always a special treat. I went with my husb on a romantic evening dinner and it was wonderful. The food is always great, the service was outstanding, prompt and simple, not overpowering. Never a dissapointment. The place was full, but not crowded or extremely noisy. I love the fresh oysters, the grilled pear salad, the fresh catch fish of the day. I usually order mussels but they were kind of small, it may be they are not in season. If I were to change anything, it would be the tables. I would add some white linen tablecloths to give a more romantic and classy ambience. Other than that, no changes."

  • "My girlfriend and I like to visit Portsmouth annually, and we decided we would try Jumping Jay's this year, because we would be there on a Friday during Lent (and we love seafood regardless). The food was outstanding, from our oysters and crab cake apps, to our entrees served with mashed potatoes and squash that were to die for. They also had a wonderful wine selection. Our server (i apologize for not remembering the young lady's name) was very good, very timely, and her suggestion as to what sauce to pick with my fish was perfect. We had their dessert special that night, which was also outstanding. Even though we try to visit a new restaurant each year we visit, Jumpin Jays is definitely a place we would return to."

  • "Service was wonderful. Water was filled quickly and often. Very attentive staff. Food came out very fast but $25 for a small piece of salmon with very plain sides??? Nothing special there. We hadn't been there for a long time and probably will be a long time before we go again considering the other restaurants in the area."

  • "Would definitely dine again-amazing and very fresh seafood. 5 star food, a little pricey but well worth it. Service was also excellent, and there is a decent wine list to choose from. We enjoyed absolutely everything we ate and drank!"

  • "Happened to dine here on dollar oyster night. I'm usually not a fan of raw oysters, but decided to try them again. These were delicious. The scallops in my entree were cooked nearly perfectly, but the sauces my server recommended didn't suit my tastes. Would like to return to try some more of the menu and to take full advantage of the raw bar."

  • "Wasn't expecting to enjoy the type of food they offered but was surprised. I'm more of a comfort food type. Everything was fresh and delicious. Great clam chowder. Service was excellent."

  • "We live locally and enjoyed your restaurant in the past. You have taken off the Lobster Tortelini, and the Haddock Picatta was only mediocre. Maybe the chef was out, or have a new one. If the food comes back to perfection and hear from others, then we will be back on a monthly basis."

  • "Meal was terrific. Very fresh and tasty seafood. Comfortable dining room. Pleasant staff. The only thing we thought was that it felt a little rushed. Would have liked a little more leisurely evening."

  • "Can't say much more than that. I've heard that sitting in the bar eating raw oysters is also a great experience. But I've only been once & I sat in the dining room. The fried clam appetizer special was perfect. For dinner I had the Caesar salad and Haddock Piccata. While I prefer the texture of chicken in piccata, it was very good. The sauce was excellent not only on the fish but also on the diced roasted squash."

  • "Excellent fish. I go to Jumpin Jay's every time I'm in Portsmouth. If you get a chance, the Roasted Pear & Radicchio Salad is fantastic also."

  • "We had a great time, our server was wonderful, the hostess was very pleasant and honored the request that I made on line through open table. It was slow the night we were there so it was nice and quiet, everyone was pleased with their meals. The quality of the fish was outstanding!"

  • "Hands down, Jumpin Jay's is Portsmouth's best upscale seafood. The fresh catches are always fantastic, specials of the day broaden the range of the menu nicely for those of us who go often, and the hosting and service are super friendly, knowledgeable of the food, and professional. It's a "must do" visit when coming to Portsmouth, or for a local on their monthly restaurant rounds."
