A word from Julienne
We are focused on bringing you local flavors that reflect the seasonality of the Santa Barbara Farmers Market. We are seeking to exemplify regional cuisine such as that in Europe and other parts of the world. Our feeling is that by using as many local ingredients as possible we can develop dishes that are truly Santa Barbara's cuisine.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "LOVE- consistent, progressive and most unpretentious food and ambience since Julienne opened its doors. Only gets better! Justin and Emma are dedicated to the palette of their diverse following."

  • "Great twist on your typical meal. Unusual pairing of foods together. Delicious! We didn't get it but there is a tasting menu that our neighbors got and is a great way to try everything."

  • "What a great restaurant!! I honestly love when the chef walks around and checks on the tables. The food was so phenomenal and attention to detail on each dish was so superb. Seasonal menu and I can't wait to go again!! Santa Barbara folks go out and support this classic and fabulous restaurant!"

  • "Julienne is one of the select three-or-so very fine restaurants in Santa Barbara. It is our favorite. Order the sampler menu. This gives a couple up to six items total. “A little bit of everything” is a wonderful choice of starters if you enjoy charcuterie. This might be the single strongest point of the joint. We have never had a soup here that was anything short of delicious. The seafood is good, but it is not a "seafood restaurant." They a recently won a prize for their “bouillabaisse” that is perfectly okay, but will have you scratching your head, “Didn’t we order bouillabaisse?” It can get too salty at times. Otherwise great! Restaurants are one of the weakest points about Santa Barbara. Cherish the few, and support our community."

  • "Justin is an exquisitely talented chef who never fails to come up with exciting and innovative flavor profiles and dishes. If you haven't been, GO! If you have been, GO BACK! This is a local spot that needs to be supported. Thanks to Dinesh and Braydon for excellent service and a delightful evening!"

  • "The server was great, the food was amazing. It's a once every few months type of place for our budget though. A little over a hundred (including tip) for (2) 22 ounce beers, an appetizer and two entrees."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "This is our 3rd time eating at Julienne. We can count on the food being exceptional. The salads are out of the ordinary and very good. We ordered a fish and a beef entree and both were excellent."

  • "We have never had a bad bite at Julienne--Justin, Emma and their crew are excellent all round. We've taken so many people here, and everyone has been blown away by how good it is. Our foodie friends from LA say it's better than any resto down there! The menu changes often, so you're always surprised by something new. Justin, Emma and little Mikey hit the farmer's market twice a week so you know the produce is local. We'd go there more if our budget allowed!"

  • "The food was good (not great) and inventive. The smoked mussels were not good. The service was fine but the noise level was so high it was difficult to have a conversation."

  • "While in Santa Barbara decided to try Julienne due to other reviews. We had a wonderful dinner, we did the 3 course meal and we enjoyed our pick of items. This is a great to try various things on the menu, great concept to have on the menu. We also enjoyed the wine pairing for our various courses. Server was informative and we had great service. Would recommend trying this place out."

  • "Always fresh seasonal flavors. Truly from the Farmers Market. You will see restaurant owners Justin and Emma at the Farmers Market many times per week picking out the local best."

  • "A great dining experience. I had the ricotta fritters, the cauliflower salad and the trout. My wife had the jerked yellow fin tuna, the lettuce salad and the Rock fish. We ordered the tasting menu and were more than satisfied with the quantity of food. We have never left Julienne's hungry. The flavors and presentation were excellent. I have a salt allergy and Julienne's has always been very accommodating and contrary to some opinions, none of the dishes were missing flavor even though they were missing salt. We have been going to Julienne's for 3-4 years and have always been pleased with the food, the service and the ambiance. When we are in Santa Barbara again later this year, we will be going there again. I can hardly wait."

  • "If you're looking for a place to get a bite before a show, this was delicious. Two of us split the Charcuterie - a little of everything, with different pates, meats, mustards, toast; (+ we tried a side of Ciabatta). Delicious. Tried the shaved carrot salad with goat cheese, tangerines, etc. Orange + white carrots, goat cheese, cucumber, and ours had about 1.5 slice of a tangerine. All crunch/ no flavor. It needed more tangerine slices for sugar/ acid. It was bland. Main course, we tried the Top Sirloin/ Beets/ Charred broccoli except ours came with steak/ roasted potatoes/ and some pickled onion. Meat was perfectly prepared. Potatoes were perfectly roasted. Menu typo? Would have preferred the beets + broccoli, but it was good."

  • "Great for a special night out with your special person. Everything was tasty...nice that there wasnt 100 options on the menu but enough where we could choose our own variety. Fresh food - they buy from the SB farmers market."

  • "My husband and I have been in Santa Barbara for 2weeks.....we have been out to dinner to many restaurants and finally made a home run with Julienne!!!!!! It's obvious that the chef is creative and uses what is the freshest in his ingredients. Only disappointment was the tres leches dessert.... Caramel sauce not brown and Carmel tasting.... Cake had no flavor.... A must try is the grilled ciabatta bread for $2.00.... A plate with 4 huge pieces...... Yummmmmm!!"

  • "My wife and i enjoy this restaurant very much. I has been one year since we last dinned here and we were looking forward to the meal. It would be nice if they had more menu options, everything was good but i found myself ordering the same or similar plates as last time. Don't get me wrong, it is very, very good and we will go back, just needs more options. Cheers"

  • "I think this restaurant falls into the category of "probably was good when it first opened...but." We were recommended to this place by someone who had been there maybe a year or two ago, so we went. The food was a 6 out of 10 at best. I think it also falls into the category of "great sounding ingredients, but so-so implementation." I mean, oxtail! Yum right? Not really. In addition to that, the server was very...what's the word I'm looking for.... uppity. Didn't offer us a drink or discuss the menu at all. He wasn't rude or mean...so I don't want to give the wrong impression. Just left a sour experience on top of the food. Maybe if the waiter was good, I wouldn't have left with a negative feeling? I'll leave that for the psychologists."

  • "Visiting SB for a few days, we reserved dinner at Julienne due to its outstanding reputation. The food was excellent; it's a shame that the rest of the dining experience did not live up to this quality. And the food is not that exceptional that it makes up for the lack of service and enjoyable atmosphere. The service we received was beyond unprofessional; when he wasn't completely ignoring us, our waiter was a living caricature of the ignorant, pretentious hipster in his attempts to describe some dishes. To the restaurant's credit, another waiter stepped in a couple of times when needed, and the extremely hardworking busboy did a wonderful job. The noise level made conversation impossible, and tables were extremely close together."

  • "our server was snooty, ambience was crowded and awkward because we were all seated so closely together. portions were small, salty and overpriced. will not go back. waste of time and money. need to improve on service level making guests feel welcomed."

  • "We visit Julienne every time we're in Santa Barbara. The food is always fresh, creative, and excellent, the service attentive and detailed without being stuffy. We almost always take advantage of the tasting menu options; the wine pairings are so creative - this time we had chardonnay with korean bbq short rib, a Portuguese red with bouillabaisse, both brilliant. And for a price that's half what we would expect to pay in LA. Love love love."

  • "This is one of our favorite restaurants. But our experience on this past Valentine's Days was quite disappointing. The food selection was poor; some of the dishes appeared to be cooked well in advanced; the portions were smaller than usual; and many of the dishes were too salty. The service was also not as good as usual. For example, the appetizer came before wine; and we felt rushed to finish each course. We hope it's a Valentine's Day fluke incidence… We will definitely try again on regular week nights."

  • "I made an Open Table reservation with a special request to be seated by the window. Was told that restaurant was expecting over 100 diners and accommodations could not be made. Also, the man on the telephone shared that Open Table assigns the first available table. So I ate a delicious Beef Tongue salad paired with a fine white and a salty bouillabaisse with an amazing red. This place is not inexpensive but the service was only great from the busboy and the hostess."

  • "I had a reservation on Valentine's Day at 9:15pm. They were running late so we waited until a little after 10pm to be seated. The first thing out of the waiters mouth was 2 of the 3 second course choices were no longer available. They said we could order 2 of the first course choices. The portions were very small and the time we had to wait in between courses was 20 min. We ended up having to go to another restaurant later on. The food was ok. Was in town for the weekend and planned to have a nice weekend and romantic V Day...I was disappointed in Julienne."

  • "My husband and I love julienne. The food is always fresh, and deliciously amazing. The people there are nice, and the wine list is tasty. If you're in SB pls do try it. The reason I'm writing the review, though, is that we went for valentines day. We normally don't eat out then as the crowds and bustle can make you feel more like cattle than enjoying a lovely, romantic night. But these folks pulled it off. The prix fixe menu has great selection. The wine parings complimented the dishes, without seeming like a sommeliers after thought. And the staff had the service down. It was very well run- friendly, efficient, and enjoyable. So great job team - we look forward to seeing I you again soon!"

  • "Julienne did a great job pairing our 4 courses to wines by the glass. Pours were generous (half glass with each course), as were the dishes. We could choose any 4 dishes from the menu, which was wonderful. The trout entree was terrific, & the salads very flavorful. The lamb flatbread was unique & tasty. We regularly recommend the restaurant highly. Thanks Emma & Justin!"

  • "Positives- wine was wonderful- service perfect Had a reservation, but was seated at large table with 9 seats- very very tight squeeze- no ability to talk with partner as conversation with others at elbow so loud- for this reason I would not go back- food unique- pigs feet, sweetbreads, pork belly was 99% fat- maybe that's normal, but not what I expected"

  • "We love the creativity of their dishes on their ever changing menu. It is hands down one of the BEST restaurants in Santa Barbara. HIGHLY recommend the tasting menus! Everyone should try this outstanding culinary experience."

  • "I had heard about the restaurant for some time but had not gotten around to visiting. My table had the 4 course tasting menu which was more than enough to satisfy a hungry appetite. Everything was superb! From the chicken liver toast to the boulliabaise and the sweetbread ravioli were excellent. I look very forward to visiting again!"

  • "Usually my favorite restaurant in Santa Barbara, I was disappointed this time. Perhaps it is a different chef on a less busy week night? One appetizer was delicious, one was terrible. The main course was oversalted and vegie undercooked. Since it is usually so good, I'll give them a pass this time."

  • "Second time dining here. Love the fact that it's off the main drag. Food and drink is primary while ambience is secondary. Service was fast, polite, knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. Can't wait to go back. We had a great table in the corner with view of all the magic happening in kitchen. Fun little neighborhood bar next door. Will go back"

  • "Visiting Santa Barbara for a few nights. Noticed a comment about the wonderful, creative food at Julienne, while the writer was bashing a big name place. Decided to give it a try and had a great experience--the best dinner out for a long time. Good wine recommendations by the glass, interesting, tasty salad, amazing house made noodles and beef cheeks. Waiter and service were perfect! We'd definitely go back, but were just passing through."

  • "We had the 5-course tasting menu, which was superb value. Every course was at least very good, with a couple of standouts -- the bouillabaisse was the best I've ever had, and the lamb flatbread excellent. We thought the boozy trifle could have done with a trifle more booze, as my slightly drunken British friend told the chef in no uncertain terms -- which he took with extreme good grace. This was a model California dining experience -- fabulous local ingredients, energetically put together, by a chef who seemed really ready to push himself, and buoyantly friendly to boot. I wish Julienne the very best, and we'll be back when we're next in the Santa Barbara area."

  • "Loved Juiienne...small charming with a chef/owner that wears a lot of hats adding to the fun. I love that you can create your own tasting menu and I created a heavenly menu for myself ..Poutine (where do see that here?) with the clever twist of duck confit, ramen noodles with a pork broth reduction that I wanted to buy a case of, and a to die for slab of pork belly to end it all. I wanted to go back the next night and have it all again!"
